Should I Switch to Linux for Better Gaming Performance on a Low-End Laptop?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 22:25

Hey everyone, I'm curious—why should I be playing on Linux?

My laptop is a bit of a potato: i7 8th gen, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD no dedicated gpu. I'm mainly wondering if I could get better gaming performance by switching to Linux. If so, I'd love to hear which distro you recommend for gaming on low-end hardware.

Looking forward to your insights!

Most steam games run extremely slow on linux mint

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 22:09

I'm fairly new to linux, installed it today but watched alot of informative stuff on it, and everything went smoothly until I tried to play cs2, which ran incredibly slow, after a little trouble shooting I got it ot run 20 fps

I've tried 2 other games,The forest and factorio, and only 1 ran normally which is factorio, I'm guessing the problem is some kind of issue about 3D games but I haven't tried enough to know(factorio is a 2D game, and it ran just as well as on windows)

RTX 3050 mobile with the 565 driver from the repository

i5 12450H

linux kernel 6.8.0 - 59 generic

If you need any other info just ask please, I have no idea what to list

I've tried reinstalling steam, different proton versions, other drivers, set the nvidia prime profile to performance, tried -fullscreen on steam launch setttings(I also have no extra monitors)

Non-linux games overheating my cpu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 22:07

Hi, so I'm kind of new on linux gaming. I'm on a laptop, I tried playing Risk of Rain 2 and got some textures kind of buggy at times, not really a significative issue. But like after 10 minutes of playing my laptop on where the processor is got hot like crazy. Game was running smooth but it was overheating like crazy, fps were limited to 60 and textures were on 1/4 resolution. Also on windows that never happened, it did overheat sometimes but later in the game when there's a lot of stuff happening. Is there any driver for the fans I should download or something? My theory is that the game is taking mi integrated graphics and overloading them as if it was an actual gpu and just letting my cpu chill

Steam games are running on CPU - please help :(

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 22:02

Hi folks,

I am a fan of Linux and have been using it in the professional sphere but never for private leisure use. However recently I heard gaming is a thing now (It's always been the one thing keeping me on windows).
I immediately installed fedora and tried running some games, however I've been really struggling.

As you can see in this screenshot:

Screenshot with system monitor, nvdia-smi and tabletop simulator

I have reason to believe that my games are running on my CPU, even though I have the latest Nvidia drivers installed (i followed a guide using rpm fusion for that).

Now I have seen similar issues on this forum, oftentimes people refer to this article:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#Configure_applications_to_render_using_GPU

However I really don't know where to start or what to do with it. I'm willing to put some work in, but I really need a guiding hand. I would love to switch to linux, finally now when gaming is supposed to be a thing.

Is anybody having performance issues with Stellaris?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 21:56

I've been having horrible performance issues. Just so you get an idea, with the minimum modifiers, small galaxy and only two more AI empires I've gotten lag by the year 2080. One day per second, levels of lag.

I have by no means a weak laptop. I have a Lenovo Legion 5, Intel i9-13900HX RAM 32 GB, 1TB SSD and an NVidia RTX 4070. I am using PopOS, and that might cause some friction, but I'm pretty sure Stellaris has a native build and it hasn't failed me with other titles.

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

CS2 looks better on Linux but also has a weird sensitivity?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 21:23

So, for the 1% of CS2 players on linux. I have 2 questions...

For context, I play on Arch Hyprland. AMD GPU with the open source drivers

  1. Why does the game look better scaled? I play on 1280x960 8xmsaa and it straight up looks better than on Windows. It looks a bit pixelated so maybe the MSAA is not running or working as usual? Since it would look like a blurry mess on Windows. Also, crosshairs are literally pixel perfect, no antialiased bullshit, they look crisp.
  2. My mouse has 1200 DPI in memory and I play 1.0 sens in cs, but somehow my sensitivity when launching on linux is much slower. It's really important to me that sensitivity remains consistent so I can play faceit on windows. Also, it kinda feels weird, like it has accel on it but very subtle? I have accel_profile set to flat and sensitivty on 0 in hyprlands config

There also doesn't seem to be any raw input options in cs2 for linux

Would my mid-tier gaming-only AMD system benefit from switching to Linux from Win11?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 20:10

My home PC is used exclusively for gaming. It is equipped with a 5600X, a 7800XT and 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM. It is currently running Windows 11.

Games played are mostly single player 3D titles ran in 1440p, most a few years old, with Warframe being a exception to the rule. The system is attached to a 4k/120 capable HDR OLED Freesync display.

(In what way) Would such a system and use case benefit from switching to Linux? What distro would you recommend?

For context, I am familiar with Linux from home automation and from past work experience. ProtonDB shows 82% of my Steam library at Gold or better, 91% at Silver or better.

Can you honestly say you enjoy gaming on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 19:44

I have used Arch for work for a while now but only used it to play Stardew Valley. My windows 11 install broke recently so I installed Nobara instead and am finally testing proper gaming on Linux.

Do you guys think it was worth it or should I just stay with Windows?

My Xbox Controller (MSI GC30) do not connect to my Manjaro PC

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 19:43

Hello everyone, I have recently stumbled upon an issue on my Gamepad.

Last time I used my Gamepad was on a Windows Machine, then I changed my system.
Now, however, it doesn't work anymore.

I have found that my pc recognize my Pad as "Microsoft Corp. Xbox360 Controller" in lsusb, but neither in system settings nor steam settings recognized it.

I have installed xone, xboxdrv, and many others, but the problem persist.

2 dots blink if it is connected via USB. If not (so via dongle), 2 dots are turn on (just like if they were connected).

I have tried with another PC (on Windows) and it worked flawlessy, I have also tried on a Virtualbox on Manjaro and it worked, but outside the virtualbox not.

Gaming on Linux EP#156: Titan Quest II Playtest | Nobara | 3700X 6600XT

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 19:13

Hi, and today I am looking at the Titan Quest 2 playtest. As a huge fan of the original I was quite excited.

The graphics, world and sound design is good and the the combat feels a bit more accessible than the original. The skill customization has also been turned up and that is a great addition. The world setting has always been the thing that drew me to the original game and this time round they do not disappoint, it looks amazing.

The performance was a bit poor, and for instance I had to play on FSR quality mode, as Native AA had weird graphical issues, and TAA just looked poor and performed quite badly. It did not really make a difference what preset I used, it still performed poorly. Another disappointment is that the loot the creatures drop is not the loot they are carrying like the original. Let's hope the final release fixes these issues.

Finally ready to go all Linux - Some questions remains

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 18:51

Hello everyone,

You guys finally made me ready to move all my setup to Linux. Been using Linux on a laptop as my work and daily driver and it has been a great experience. I, however am at the point where I need to choose my distro carefully.

I used to game a lot but it's mostly single player experience and some multiplayer games on the side. I know all my games except rainbow six siege works on Linux no problems. However, not all distro are made equal.

I prefer Linux Mint but I had some trouble to setup proton and had some weird bugs. I know the kernel is stable but older.

I tried Nobara and it's REALLY good, everything works out of the box but I heard it's maintained by one guy and I fear for longevity.

I used Ubuntu in the past and I know I can personalize but the main look and feel just aint for me.

Didn't try bazzite and Valve doesn't seem ready to just release steam os. I used steamOS for a while in Desktop mode and it's ok for my needs... but I have a Nvidia GPU with an AMD CPU combo.

So what would be a good compromise? Maybe my fear Nobara won't be maintained for long isn't rooted in reality? Should I choose another instead?

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy is flickering a LOT

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Mai 2025 - 18:08

Hi, I've been a full-time linux user for 5 years now, and I've played a lot of games using proton. But even if sometimes I had to tinker a bit, right now I don't understand why it flickers like that.
It's the only game that does this for me.
Here's my specs:

OS: Arch Linux (KDE Plasma)
KERNEL: 6.14.4-zen1-2-zen
CPU: Intel Core i7-9750H @ 2.60GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
GPU DRIVER: NVIDIA 570.144
RAM: 32 GB

Of course I've tried reinstalling and changing some launch options, I've tweaked config.ini to change things like Vsync and I've changed proton versions (GE, experimental, Hotfix, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5) and it's still the same (it doesn't start at all with 10 and 5) i also try to disable compositing.

IF it's fullscreen or borderless it's even worse it's mainly a black screen and some flickering, and even the steam HUD (SHIFT + TAB) flickers.

I have no idea rn what to try next and would need help if you have any or at least if you some explanation on why this is happenning.
