Arch gets less FPS (200FPS difference) on my machine then Ubuntu. What can I do?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Apr 2024 - 1:14pm

Hello guys,

I am planning a switch to Arch when my new SSD comes in, I have been testing it for over 4 months now, and to my relief it is actually getting worse performance than my Ubuntu 22.04 LTS install for the first time in Quake Champions which is one of the games I love to play in my free time.

On Ubuntu it gets 300FPS (300 being the cap which is the maximum cap for that game) and on Arch (as of recently) it gets 67-80FPS which is really unexpected, as there has been no change in the software I run on Arch (unless you include the updates I did). By the way I just did a sudo pacman -Syu and the system is up to date as of 11th April.

My GPU is an Nvidia card, I use proprietary drivers on both my machines, most specifically the 550 drivers (Arch has the 550.67 drivers and Ubuntu has the 550.54 drivers).

My DE on Arch is Plasma 6 and GNOME on Ubuntu.

I use Wayland on both systems and it pretty much is the only thing that can help me, a person who has multiple mixed refresh rate monitors. Especially with the Explicit DRM Sync merge and the upcoming 555 drivers implementing Explicit Sync in May (according to Nvidia at least) the future looks really bright.

Do you have any suggestions on what may be the reason of these problems? Also, if you do have fixes you implemented or you know of tell them.

Thank you very much for reading. If you have any questions regarding my configuration, do not hesitate, put them in the comments.

Error: Couldn't switch to requested monitor resolution (I'm going crazy)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Apr 2024 - 11:57am

Hello everyone,

I recently made the full jump to Linux, and installed Fedora 39 KDE on my laptop (which has a Nvidia 1650ti mobile dGPU), permanently removing Windows from the partition (and I don't regret a thing). At first everthing worked flawlessly: installed Nvidia drivers from rpmfusion, Steam and Heroic Launcher (both as flatpaks), all the games I play on both platforms run at the first click without any tweaking. After a few days, every game I try to play regardless of which launcher I use gives the following error at startup:

https://preview.redd.it/hkc02052mttc1.png?width=392&format=png&auto=webp&s=a21023080836a8027ab50910898591c40ca68eca

The issue arises both on Wayland and X11 sessions, besides I gamed on Wayland without any errors previously as stated above, so I assume it is not . After searching online, I found that setting PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% as a launch option works on Steam, but with major impairments in graphic and performance. As for Heroic, disabling the "Auto Install/Update DXVK on Prefix" and VKD3D options achieves similar effects. Of course these are workarounds and far from a real solution to the problem. I then decided to make a post on the fedora forum to seek help, but things are moving slowly. I similarly opened an issue on the DXVK Github page (as the error seems to involve DXVK) and they told me that it would be difficult to help remotely. I'll link both of them for additional information:

https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/issues/3946

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/error-couldnt-switch-to-requested-monitor-resolution/112135/15

Reinstalling Fedora from scratch works for a couple of days, but the issue returns without fail soon after. Another strange thing I noticed is, very rarely upon booting the laptop everything starts to work again, just to mysteriously break once I turn it off for the day and on again the day after. I'll also include the log of one of the games I tried to launch from Heroic:

https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/files/14920996/game-LastPlay.log

This is a cry for help because I'm stuck and don't really know what to do next, and wanted to know your opinion on the matter.

Lies of P starting in a black screen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Apr 2024 - 10:47am

Hi everyone,

I am trying to play Lies of P, but it will only launch into a black screen. Other games (native as well as proton games) work fine, lies of p is the first game giving me this problem.

Did anyone experience this as well or has any tipps for me?

Distro: Debian 12,
Steam is installed through apt,
Nvidia gtx1060 with proprietary drivers,
Proton Experimental (Also tried older versions, same problem),
PROTON_LOG (Terminated game through SteamUI): https://filebin.net/ehcpzy7cavo1lzl9

If there is any Information missing, please ask. Also, if this is the wrong sub for this, I'm sorry, please point me to the right one.

Dev Log : Added new gameplay

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Apr 2024 - 10:36am

Hello everyone,

With the addition of new gameplay (knee strike, fly kick, back flip, hurricane kick) the character now has the possibility of performing sequences, it's much more fun to test. There is a transition when an enemy speaks (a shader with a CRT effect).

Good day and good game

Need a key macro for linux gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Apr 2024 - 4:24am

I am playing game on arch linux using Proton. I need to set the side button of mouse to "left click, key_r, key_r". However, proton seems to bypass the settings of X11 and receive the input of keyboard directly. Is there a way to achieve this.

Vesktop not showing game activity

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Apr 2024 - 12:51am

Currently I use the steam deck as my main PC, so obviously I needed a version of discord. I found vesktop, which is basically is discord with vencord (discord plugin manager) built in. Though as I used it, I realized that when I opened a game the discord overlay never showed up. And while playing, I also noticed on my profile, there was no game appearing. I then tried adding the game manually, but nothing showed except google chrome. Recently the option for managing activities just disappeared. I looked all over for something, but nothing came up so I eventually came to this subreddit.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10 Apr 2024 - 11:16pm

This is me trying to run HSR with Honkers launcher and the fps runs smooth but the graphics....not so much. I tried using epic games store but all it does is launch epic games store(assuming it crashed). it doesnt seem to want to work with wine 8.26....This photo uses 9.5 on honkers launcher was the best I could get.

ERR_NO_LAUNCHER when running Steam GTA V

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10 Apr 2024 - 11:04pm

When running GTA V through Steam on my PC (Debian 12) it first opens up Rockstar Launcher (as usual) then brings up the error message ERR_NO_LAUNCHER with the text 'Please run Grand Theft Auto V using Rockstar Games Launcher'.

This error has been occurring for a few months, the drive I originally had GTA installed on died, but I am pretty sure it originally was working after I reinstalled it on a new drive. I checked protondb around the time and there were no reported issues. I did also check the Proton GitHub issue for GTA V, but the issues seemed unrelated (needing to change wine to a newer windows version, which I had already done previously).

This happens with both flatpak and native versions of Steam. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both GTA V and Steam, including deleting both the game, wine prefix and steam flatpak directories.

Interestingly, the game does run on my laptop (Arch Linux). I tried transfering both the game files and wine prefix over to my PC, however I still have the same issue. Given both were on flatpak, the only difference I can think off between the two systems, besides hardware, is my laptop is running Xorg and my PC is Wayland. I would play on my laptop but low specs (8gb ram, no dedicated gpu) mean after opening up GTA, my laptop is unusable and I have to force reboot it.

When I search for the error online, all of the results have different text under the error (directing you to run PlayGTA.exe instead), the solutions were generally whitelisting the program in their antivirus. As I am running in wine, without an antivirus, this is obviously not the issue.

I have uploaded steam-271590.log to https://0x0.st/X--J.log and theres a lot in there and I can't really extract anything useful out of it. I see two potential errors: VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_HOST_MEMORY and 927895.729:02d4:02d8:err:ole:marshal_object Failed to create an IRpcStubBuffer from IPSFactory for {e89f726e-c4f4-4c19-bb19-b647d7fa8478} with error 0x80004002, the second of which I have no idea about, the first which could be running out of VRAM? I am running an rx 550 with 2gb vram, so this is possible, but given this was never an issue before, and has consistently been an issue since, I don't believe this is the case.

I have uploaded launcher.log to https://0x0.st/X--v.log but I don't see anything useful in there. There is something about the update service not being available, but I assume thats either handled through steam, or temporary, because there have been several times when I've tried running GTA and the launcher has updated.

Any ideas, tests, extra logs to get, other places to try asking, please let me know.

Who will win, Linux or VR?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10 Apr 2024 - 10:17pm

Currently Linux is ahead. In the long run on Steam who will be the leader, Linux adoption or VR adoption?

(I count as both)
