A very casual Windows vs Linux benchmark The Sequel
Hai! Continuing my journey with Linux gaming and Linux in general, I've decided to once again share my very casual (and a little less scuffed than last time) benchmarks of games I happen to own, previous findings featuring Intel Arc B580 can be found in this post
Short context about this experiment: I'm currently dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora 43 with KDE Plasma, the benchmarks are being done on the same drive (with the difference being formatting, Windows was using NTFS and Fedora was using EXT4 file system and different drivers). I only included average FPS without the lows because I couldn't get rivatuner to show anything on the low 1% or 0.1% so this post will not have those unfortunately. Taking the feedback from last time I've also decided to include graphs to make it easier to read and as a little tldr
DISCLAIMER: These tests aren't by all means professional, they're made by very casual gamer with little to no tinkering with the system, the reason the tests are made on the following games are simply because those are the games I own and play, which is also the reason this list is so small. And lastly all games were using Proton Experimental (except Minecraft and 7 Days to Die which ran natively)
Here are the 'puter specs:
- GIGABYTE X870 AORUS ELITE WIFI7
- AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
- GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC
- G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB 2x16GB 5600MHz CL36
- Kingston M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe KC3000 2TB (this is the drive the games were tested on)
- Corsair RMx Shift 850W
- Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
GPU Drivers for Windows: 26.3.1
GPU Drivers for Fedora: Mesa 25.3.6
Monitoring app for Windows: MSI Afterburner + RivaTuner
Monitoring app for Fedora: MangoHUD
And here are the comparisons:
Minecraft Java 1.21.11, running around exploring on a new world (no mods, render distance 12 simulation distance 12 everything else max settings)
Windows 11 1440p - 740
Windows 11 1080p - 650*
Fedora 43 1440p - 826
Fedora 43 1080p - 962
*The 1080p performance on windows is lower because it did not wanna go higher than 180 when on 1080p so I had to use a different monitor which I'm pretty doesn't support the newer display port standards :P
Comment: I tuned it down from 16 chunks from before to 12 chunks because in Minecraft or any other CPU intensive games my CPU becomes a bottleneck.
Cyberpunk, benchmarking tool (max settings, no ray tracing, no upscaling)
Windows 11 1440p - 125
Windows 11 1080p - 167
Fedora 43 1440p - 120
Fedora 43 1080p - 160
Cyberpunk, benchmarking tool (max settings, max ray tracing, no upscaling)
Windows 11 1440p - 46
Windows 11 1080p - 73
Fedora 43 1440p - 35
Fedora 43 1080p - 56
Cyberpunk, benchmarking tool (max settings, path tracing, no upscaling)
Windows 11 1440p - 25
Windows 11 1080p - 40
Fedora 43 1440p - 20
Fedora 43 1080p - 33
Comment: upscaling is definitely needed in order to play at a comfortable framerate with ray tracing.
DOOM: The Dark Ages, few rounds of ripatorium (Ultra Nightmare preset, 2048 texture pool size, upscaling FSR Native AA 100%)
Windows 11 1440p - 70
Windows 11 1080p - 100
Fedora 43 1440p - 71
Fedora 43 1080p - 96
Comment: Even tho the frame rate is pretty good on Windows, it stuttered a lot so the 1% or even 10% lows were like single digit FPS so Linux wins here by a landslide.
And for those wondering path tracing brought it down to like 20 FPS on Windows and didn't work at all for Linux
Monster Hunter Wilds, benchmark tool (Ultra preset, no ray tracing, no upscaling)
Windows 11 1440p - 106
Windows 11 1080p - 110
Fedora 43 1440p - 91
Fedora 43 1080p - 101
Comment: for some reason ray tracing option was grayed out on Linux so no ray tracing comparison here unfortunately
Black Myth Wukong, benchmark tool (Very High preset, no ray tracing, super resolution 80%)
Windows 11 1440p - 87
Windows 11 1080p - 96
Fedora 43 1440p - 82
Fedora 43 1080p - 78
Black Myth Wukong, benchmark tool (Very High preset, Very High ray tracing, super resolution 80%)
Windows 11 1440p - 30
Windows 11 1080p - 35
Fedora 43 1440p - 18
Fedora 43 1080p - 15
Comment: I honestly have no clue why the 1080p on Linux is doing worse lol
I also don't know if they're ever going to optimize this benchmarking app because the rt performance sucks
The Witcher 3, regular gameplay of running around and killing mobs (RT Ultra preset)
Windows 11 1440p - 101
Windows 11 1080p - 102
Fedora 43 1440p - 44
Fedora 43 1080p - 51
The Witcher 3, regular gameplay of running around and killing mobs (Uber preset)
Windows 11 1440p - 164
Windows 11 1080p - 178
Fedora 43 1440p - 101
Fedora 43 1080p - 147
Comment: This is another great example of Mesa being really far behind when it comes to ray tracing
7 Days to Die, regular gameplay of exploring and looting houses (max settings)
Windows 11 1440p - 118
Windows 11 1080p - 147
Fedora 43 1440p - 126
Fedora 43 1080p - 185
Comment: Just your average Linux native game having better performance!
In conclusion, gaming on this beast of a card is very comfortable both on Windows and Linux, with the penguin systems struggling significantly with ray tracing, but in the end, the best way to game is to turn off any and all performance metrics.
As a side note I excluded Minecraft from the chart to make the viewing experience just a little better! Once again feel free to share any feedback or ask any questions! Thank you for reading and have a nice day!

Minecraft entities stuttery on servers
As the title says, entities are super stuttery while on servers, any servers. I run a Minecraft server locally and it was also stuttery. Running single player does not cause the issue. This was not an issue while on Windows, but has been an issue on Mint, Arch, Bazzite, and currently CashyOS. I have increased the allowed ram up to 8gb just in case that would help, it didn't. This is also happening modded and not modded (mostly performance or rendering mods). I would like to get this to work in vanilla, but if there is a known mod that can help, I am willing to try it. Below are my specs:
OS: CachyOSKERNEL: 6.19.9-1-cachyos
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU
GPU DRIVER: NVIDIA 595.45.04
RAM: 32 GB

Upscalers cause leaves flickering in Ghost Of Tsushima

I did try turning off ntsync/fsync/esync, turning off and on native wayland rendering and disabling the environmental variable that made use of latest dlss preset.
I use CachyOS, RTX 4060 mobile, heroic games launcher. Tried both cachyos-proton and GE-Proton.
Would be super grateful if someone could help me!

I need help with Overwatch (CachyOS)
I just installed CachyOS and I'm trying to play Overwatch. After looking at Steam settings for a while because my ping was really high, I realized the game was putting me on the LAS1 server instead of the European one (I'm from Spain). Could someone help me?

My first gaming laptop is now a Linux Powerhouse.
After doing a clean windows install on my main pc, I was peeved, extremely peeved. I was reinstalling windows because the install before was having a minor issue that basically debilitated my ability to use the system. Windows being Windows I suppose. But that's neither here nor there, just basically put my mind on Linux. Afraid of change, I decided to experiment on the system that started it all for me. HP Omen 17 in, i7 10 gen and the modest rtx 2060 6gb. Got lots of ram though! It began to show its age about two years ago and I had it sitting there being a paperweight. After a good repasting and fan replacement, it still sat there, idle.
At this point I built a desktop and even more powerful laptop, but I could not part with my omen, it deserved better. I am using PopOS for the Nvidia support, but I imagine there are better alternatives out there. So far though, I have this beast running Final Fantasy XVI and Metal Gear Delta: Snake Eater. It might be true, the performance is spectacular on Linux. Might consider trying out a distro on my main system. But that is for another day.

Wireless controllers won't work on steam games but work on Steam's UI
I have 2 controllers which are a generic xbox layout controller and a ds4 v2 controller. Both of them work fine when navigating the Steam UI on Big Picture mode and while testing but on games? They don't work at all. I have tried turning all settings that converts inputs from controllers to Steam input and enabled PS controller support as well but it still didn't work. Games I have tried are GTA 4 and Metro 2033 Redux which are both on Proton, the trackpad of ds4 works fine on these games tho, for some reason.
I also have tried it on non-steam games on Heroic Launcher, it works but the inputs are messed up! They are constantly being triggered for some reason but inputs that I do are also working. My laptop is running Fedora 43 KDE, I have a Bazzite PC but it doesn't have any wireless connections. Tho, I haven't tried using my generic controller on it thru wired connection. Anyone knows the solution?
I want to play single player games from Steam on Linux, as long as they're playable on Linux of course. GTA 4 feels smoother on Linux than on Windows and that annoying Rockstar app isn't a huge problem unlike on Windows so hopefully, someone knows and guide me to the solution for this problem.

How likely am I to get banned from Fortnite by playing it through heroic game launcher on Linux Mint instead of my Windows 11 partition?
Because the Epic Games launcher isn't available on Linux I used the Heroic Games Launcher.
Fortnite isn't natively supported on Linux and probably never will be, but with tools like the Heroic Games Launcher I can technically play Fortnite right?
but it already warned me that I might get flagged/banned if I play on here instead of my Windows 11 partition.
How likely am I to get banned if I play things like zero build, creative maps with friends, Blitz, not any of those tournaments or anything, just casual playing Fortnite with friends or on my own.
And is there anything I gotta know about buying V-bucks through Linux?
If I do get banned/flagged by playing on Linux, can I also not play anymore on Windows 11?
I always hear that you CAN get banned by playing on Linux, but how likely is that to actually happen?

RE3 Classic Rebirth HD Seamless mod on Lutris - I'm giving up.
Ok, I've been through this for quite some while. The game regularly works perfectly, but the second I install the HD mod, it will display the already well known tiny square on the top left of the window. This happens the second libwebp.dll is set on wine configuration overrides and the bio3hd.asi is added to the folder (with or without the hires folder). Some say the problem is the .asi file, but replacing it with the "fixed" one doesn't help.
My DXVK is already the most recent too, Proton GE 32 running the game, tried to do every single fix people recommended it just don't work.
I'm using the Source Next version of the game by the way. DXVK is already 2.7.1 but I even downgraded it once to the version everyone in the posts of a year or two ago kept saying I should have, it doesn't work.
Again I have already done all changes I could find online, followed every single tutorial, but so far, no luck. It seems wine itself is the problem and was not fixed to this date, which is a shame.
If you somehow managed to make this whole ordeal work within Lutris, would you consider showing me your game configurations, and maybe zip the core files you use to send me, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm pretty sure the issue is the bio3hd files. Either way, thanks, I'll be giving up for now because I'm tired, and I need to work. I spent a whole night trying to fix a problem for an old game, at this point I'll just play this as a pixelated game, it will be far easier.
