Nvidia on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 8:39pm

I've heard a lot of stuff about lack of Nvidia GPU support in most Linux distros. I want to make the jump but I have a 3080ti and don't really have the funds to upgrade right now. How bad is it really for gamers? What would I have to do to make it work? Are there any distros better at handling it than others?

Is there any way to make steam background recording consistently only record game audio, rather than all audio?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 8:16pm

I know that you can use pipewire patching tools to reroute sound, but it seemingly needs to be done every time you start a game. This isnt really viable because its a lot of work, and frankly I'm just not going to remember to do it. The biggest reason I dont want to record all audio is most of the time I'm playing games I'm going to be in discord calls with friends and constantly recording what they are saying is just a completely unacceptable non starter, but it also just ruins being able to go back and watch bits and pieces of it without it being littered with whatever unrelated thing we happen to be talking about at the time.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can address this?

System bell sound on Alt+ combinations (e.g. Alt+W)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 8:08pm

Tried it in several games I had installed (CS2, which runs natively; Deltarune, which doesn't), only seems to happen in Dark Souls Remastered

Struggling to add my second SSD to steam.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 7:09pm

I finally pulled the plug and installed Linux Mint, as I am beyond tired of Microsofts bs. I have some minor experience with Linux as i've messed around with it on old laptops, but this is the first time I'm seriously doing it and on my main setup.

I have two internal SSDs. The smaller one I have my OS on, and the bigger one I usually used for games. I have added an ext4 partition to it through gparted, and I have mounted it. It shows up in my file directory. However when I go on steam settings, storage, add drive, and choose the drive, nothing happens. I try to save but the disk isn't added. I have tried googling the issue but I haven't found a way yet. I initially installed steam through the software manager, but I read it might not have all needed permissions then, so I went and installed the deb directly from steams page. I also tried making a steam directory on the drive and directly choose that, but it made no difference.

Anyone know how I can get steam to recognize the disk?

Steam games take a long time to actually launch (Kubuntu)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 7:03pm

I'm experiencing a weird issue where even simple games take upwards of 45 seconds to actually launch after I click play.

For comparison, Huniepop 2 (simple VN-style game) launches in roughly 3 seconds on Windows 10. On Kubuntu it consistently takes ~38 seconds to launch. I have background shader processing toggled on, and the long launch time is consistent even if I close and relaunch the game. I have "force specific Steam Play compatibility tool" toggled off, but even if I toggle it on and select Proton Hotfix the launch time is unchanged.

If I launch the steam snap from the terminal, I can see that 30 seconds of that time is spent doing this:

Fossilize INFO: Overriding serialization path: "/home/<user>/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/shadercache/930210/fozpipelinesv6/steamapprun_pipeline_cache".

Specs:
Kubuntu 25.04 (relatively fresh minimal install, only like 15 additional programs installed)
Ryzen 7 3700 8-core, RTX 4070, 1TB m.2 NVME
'sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade' to confirm everything is up-to-date

Steam uses Mesa llvmpipe as driver, how do I fix this?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 5:29pm

I searched the internet and reddit but I haven't been able to come up with a solution. Everything is normal for other programs, it seems to be an issue with steam.

Wine Error when I tab in to the game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 4:27pm

Strange one... the game opens, it shader caches and looks to render the menu scene and everything, but the instant I tab in to the game or click in to the game then I get this error:

https://preview.redd.it/4l4rej6kpgbf1.png?width=774&format=png&auto=webp&s=50f588c93e3e9aeaf8b02d06903a8a16d06a01d7

Don't suppose anyone knows how I could fix it?

EDIT: of course as soon as I post this I find a fix using a different Proton version, the latest Proton-GE build via ProtonUp-Qt

Enabling HDR with GPU Screen Recorder results in replays being grayed out?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 3:57pm

I'm using KDE Plasma (with Arch btw) and if I enable HDR, GPU screen recorder will record the screen and everything just fine, but the playback will show a very gray tint to everything, almost like it's washed out.

How can I keep HDR enabled without ruining how clips work?

Is this something that can be fixed via post processing?

EDIT: Bonus points if someone can tell me why my microphone keeps only recording to the left channel.

Steam filling up /home/user/.cache/doc

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 2:47pm

I've recently run into an issue where my main disk is showing it is full. The disk itself only had 44 gb of data on it that could be located with tools like k4dirstat. After much digging, I finally have located what I believe is the culprit, which is /home/user/.cache/doc being absolutely full of steam files. My OS drive is 250 GiB, but /home/user/.cache/doc is showing as using 644.2 GiB. I do have a separate drive for my steam library, mounted at /games, which is showing the expected amount of storage utilization, which roughly matches the 644.2 figure. Uninstalling a game decreased both /games and /home/user/.cache/doc by roughly the same amount.

I've tried clearing the download cache in steam, but that didn't do anything. Restarting changed nothing, and I've verified the mountpoint for the games drive is correct. I'm currently using the .deb version of steam, when I first noticed this issue I was using the snap version. I'm seeing this with heroic as well, although to a far lesser extent as I only have a few games installed.

I'm assuming this is a snap issue, rather than a steam issue. If anyone has an idea for how to resolve it, without wiping my entire steam and epic libraries, that would be appreciated.

Linux Mint "There was an error launching the application" with RPCS3 and ShadPS4 shortcuts

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Jul 2025 - 2:45pm

I'm not sure but I suspect because I have Flatseal installed to manage my flatpak permissions that it isn't launching the shortcuts properly.
RPCS3 shortcuts:
"/app/bin/rpcs3" --no-gui "%%RPCS3_GAMEID%%:NPUB30698"

ShadPS4 shortcut:
/app/bin/shadps4 "/mnt/07d808f9-7705-4e65-9bd3-77441ea3c352/Games/ES-DE/Emulators/PS4/CUSA00900/eboot.bin"

Both these games run when launched via their emulators and both are backups of physical media I own and can provide pictures of the physical copies if needed. Anyways when I click the .desktop shortcuts the "Create shortcut" option generates all I get is an error message that says "There was an error launching the application" which doesn't really tell me anything about how to solve the problem, just that there is a problem.

Both my PS3 and PS4 backups are stored on a removable drive but I've given flatpaks access to that drive in Flatseal so I'm drawing a blank why the shortcuts are having issues.
