Wine can't find DLLs in game directory

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 10:37am

I can't get Wine to load certain games, because it complains about missing .dll files even though the .dlls are all present in the game directory. (See attached screenshot)

https://preview.redd.it/d8xmtuddcfxf1.png?width=963&format=png&auto=webp&s=648e48addc63e21643c0b5cf8017e05bbe74cf06

This happens with some newer games, like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, as well as some older games like Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller. However, if I manually add the games in Lutris they will run perfectly. I'm not sure what the problem is with Wine. I installed all of the optional dependencies as well as steam-native-runtime which includes them anyway. So then why can't Wine find the DLLs? I've googled everywhere and found no solution so far.

Looking for a little help with wine.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 10:32am

So I'm currently running Arch linux and I've installed wine to play Path of Exile. I created a wine prefix in ~/Games/path-of-exile1 and installed the game to it.

Now my understanding of how to run the game is to use the command "WINEPREFIX=/home/cptmoler/Games/path-of-exile-1 wine /home/cptmoler/Games/path-of-exile-1/drive_c/GGG/PathOfExile_x64.exe" and it works great when I run the game from in the GGG folder.

But I recently ran the link that gnome created and for some strange reason the poe launcher thought I needed to redownload some of the game files. But I noticed that it downloaded them in the ~ folder and not in the wineprefix that I created.

So I tested this in the command prompt by making a temp directory in Downloads navigating to ~/Downloads/temp and then running the "WINEPREFIX=/home/cptmoler/Games/path-of-exile-1 wine /home/cptmoler/Games/path-of-exile-1/drive_c/GGG/PathOfExile_x64.exe" command and experienced the same behaviour as before where the poe launcher started downloading the files again.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask but can anyone figure out what I'm doing wrong or why I'm seeing this behaviour from wine?

SteamOS 3 on desktop PC

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 9:59am

So I scrambled myself a somewhat decent ITX mini PC with parts I bought online mostly 2nd hand(except for the case, and CPU cooler). While I'm not a "serious" gamer of any kind, I like to play some things every now and then, not too demanding, and not too competitive, just a regular "average gamer Joe" here you might say.
With all that in mind, it's obviously a budged build, and it consists of an older AM4 mobo/cpu combo B450i with a Ryzen 5700G, Radeon RX6600 and a 32G RAM on 3200Mhz CL16.
All this costed me about 500ish EUR, which I think it's a decent build as pretty much everything I tried so far is having 0 issues playing on High presets with a stable 60fps regardless.
It's a whisper quiet system as I only have a tower style cooler on the CPU, which is basically not allowing the CPU to go anywhere near 60C, in gaming, and same goes with the GPU.

Anyways... Enough backstory, and enough said about this pile 2nd hand hardware(junk?) :)

Everything went smooth in terms of installation of the OS as it's not my 1st time with this, and before anyone say something like "You should use Bazzite, you twat" or some other similar distro, I would absolutely say No to that, not because they are bad distros in any way, it's just a personal preference, and that's the beauty of Linux, regardless of which distro you are using, as long as it works for what you need, it's all good, so please.

Everything is running smooth enough, and I'm basically having no issues with anything really, EXCEPT this one thing that's slightly bugging me, and it's not something deal breaking either.

For some odd reason when I chose to show these statistics/metrics where it shows the fps, frame time, load, wattage usage, temps, etc. it's not showing the Wattage for the CPU, while everything else is displaying just fine.

It's weird because on another similar system that is using Bazzite, this is showing up just fine, just not on SteamOS(latest stable) so I wonder, It may be something that is not allowed on kernel level, or there may be some packages that are missing here, even though I'm not too deep into Linux in general, I barely only have a basic-basic understanding of how things work...

Soo... What can I do to try and understand exactly what's wrong here, how critical it may be, or may not be, and what can I do to try and find out what's going on, so it can be resolved if possible?

Any help and/or tips are highly appreciated, just please don't advertise different distros... Please. Thank You :)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 7:05am

What distro to use?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 6:02am

Hello people. I would like you to help me choose which distro I can use for everyday use (I currently use a dual boot with Windows and Pop_Os); I usually play online games, edit videos, stream. Pop_Os is slow on my PC even though I have no programs installed and every time I log in I have to update things. What recommendations do you give me? Thank you

XBox App in Waydroid

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 5:25am

I have a buddy who is very much a PC gamer but for some reason insists on using his XBox a lot of the time. Instead of using the Discord app on the XBox and using his existing Discord server or setting up a laptop to use his existing Teamspeak server, he also insists on using XBox Party Chat because....reasons. We can play cross platform games, but I am unable to voice chat with them because I have only Discord or Teamspeak.

Everything I can find about using the XBox Android app in Waydroid are at least a year old and from what I can tell they suggest that there is no microphone support as of the time of their posting.

Does anyone know what the current state of voice chat in the XBox app in Waydroid is? Does it work? Do I need an XBox specific account to use the app or does a regular Microsoft account as I would use to log into Windows work?

EDIT: Also, I keep finding references to being able to join Xbox parties in a browser, but I can't find a website to actually do this? Is this something XBox planned and never implemented? Something that was once a thing but has been discontinued? It's maddening.

Heroic cloud saves: discrepant behavior depending on how "cloud saves sync" is accessed for the first time

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 3:51am

I'm writing this post because I was having some trouble with cloud saves in Heroic, and I want to document it in case someone runs across the same issue.

I'm using Fedora with Heroic Games Launcher 2.18.1 installed as a flatpak. I've linked it to a GOG account where I have some pre-existing cloud saves that were created back when I was using GOG Galaxy on a Windows system.

If I access cloud saves by clicking on a game and then opening the game's settings from that screen, then cloud saves don't seem to work. So, for instance, clicking on Against the Storm in my Library:

https://preview.redd.it/1m8iwqqzbdxf1.png?width=1477&format=png&auto=webp&s=b8c6afbbbe07c64bb8a122f8491174d7117ebf47

The settings for this game can be accessed from the button in the top-right corner. The cloud sync screen does not work well when I do this. A "Trying to detect the correct save folder" message appears and sits there forever. Canceling that and trying to perform a sync pops up an empty box with no text, and nothing will ever appear here:

https://preview.redd.it/2ma8itzfcdxf1.png?width=1110&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ff23c3d25a33a3da5ba5f4ab5335f309e025ac7

The logs don't indicate that there's a problem. There seems to simply not be any attempt to perform a sync. I'd guess that this is a bug in the GUI.

But there is a workaround. I had noticed that the Library view also has a Settings button under each game, so I decided to try using that instead. So for example, here's my Library view, and you can see Against the Storm has a Settings button under it:

https://preview.redd.it/nlzyj6qrbdxf1.png?width=1477&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0f999bac5b590907f73af86dd7694a6c9c648b9

If I access the game's settings from this display, then cloud sync works! A path is instantly/automatically chosen, I hit sync, and everything seems to work perfectly.

I've observed this happening with all of my games. If I access a game's settings from the Library, then cloud saves sync works. If I access a game's settings from the game's page, then cloud sync does not work: but I can make it work again by just accessing the settings from the library page.

Also, once cloud sync has been enabled successfully for the first time (from the Library), then that seems to permanently fix it; I can then access the cloud sync page from that game's sub-page and everything continues to work for that game.

Pretty easy work-around, but it was a little frustrating since I used the broken method first! Hopefully this gets fixed, and hopefully this post is found by others encountering the same problem

linux native games arent using dedicated gpu but non-native ones are?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 3:09am

basically the title. Running a game via proton on steam uses dedicated gpu, but running a native one makes it use my integrated one. I don't want to disable my integrated one as I want to use it for stuff like the desktop and basic apps.

I have an nvidia 3050 laptop gpu and run kubuntu. this issue happens with non-steam games as well such as sober, which technically isnt its own game but idc. I have the 580 propritetary driver installed and have the PRIME profiles thing set to preformance, but that did nothing. I installed the drivers via KDE's built-in driver manager

[Indie game] FIRMWARE//LOCKED demo out now!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 2:13am

Hello everyone! 👋

I've posted a few times here before and I'm excited to announce that my new indie psychological horror/CLI simulator game's demo is out!

Me and a small team of indie creators have been working on this for a while. The demo is now fully polished though it may receive 1 more update.

🖥️It's mostly a CLI simulator and psychological/bodyhorror type of game though in the demo there won't be much bodyhorror.

The full game will include cutscenes too, all with original music, art assests & voice acting! (Even now most music and sounds you'll hear are original: minus the main menu music, the type beep, message notification and heartbeat sound. Those are pixabay assets).

💾You can download it on Itch.io!

📝I'm open to feedback (especially about the Itch.io page I'm not sure if it's captivating enough yet)

There will also be a proper trailer video but that requires a lot of art and voice acting to be done so that won't come anytime soon.

Unreal Engine VKD3D games freezing issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 1:30am

I have this issue where UE4 and UE5 games running under VKD3D will randomly freeze for 5-10 seconds and then continue running as normal. For example, Stellar blade does this after 1-1.5 hours of gameplay. The rest of the system does not freeze, and is completely responsive, only the game freezes and recovers after a few seconds. I have observed this behaviour in other games such as Witchfire( UE4) and Void/Breaker(UE5). Games that are not made in the UE and not DX12 do not exhibit this behaviour. I don't have this issue in DOOM The Dark Ages(VULKAN), Red Dead Redemption 2(VULKAN), and Dying Light(DX11), and my play sessions in those games are 4-5 hours long, so the issue is either UE or VKD3D.

Setup:

Arch Linux

Hyprland

Ryzen 7 7800 X3D

32GB DDR5 6000MHz

RTX 5090

nvidia-open-dkms 580.95.05-1 driver

Proton experimental and GE 10-15, GE 10-20

Any idea what is causing this/how to fix it?

Fallout 4 (or Bethesda games in general) running with MO2

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 1:26am

Hello! I've been having this inquiry for a while now, and is, will achievements work if I use MO2? I remember installing mods for Oblivion remastered (OBSE64 specifically) and since its a new executable, Steam does not recognize as you playing the original game, so the saves, play time and achievements wont count on the original unmodified game.

I've been feeling like a 5th fallout 4 playtrhough, but without mods is not the same; any input would be greatly appreaciated :D

Alt+Tabbing gives me a 20+fps Boost...?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 1:07am

Cyberpunk 2077. Don't think it happens in other games.

NVidia 2080ti. KDE Plasma, Arch Linux
Proton 9 (Also tried Experimental, same thing)
Happens both on X11 and Wayland session

Everytime I launch the game, it starts with lower FPS than expected. Then, after I alt+tab one time, and tab back in, I get a permanent 20+fps boost for the rest of the session.

Why is this happening?

Far Cry 5 no longer boots?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 12:26am

Hi linux_gaming!

I'm trying to run Far Cry 5 that I've bought on Steam on my CachyOS install. The game is purchased through Steam, I'm not trying to run this via Lutris or anything like that.

When I boot the game, the button changes from Play to Stop and acts as if the game has booted, but nothing shows. I never see a Ubisoft Connect login prompt, or any sign that Ubisoft Connect has booted at all. I've tried reinstalling Ubisoft Connect with Protontricks into Far Cry 5s prefix and that doesn't work. I've tried Proton Experimental, the latest Cachy Proton, the latest Proton GE and nothing will work to get this game booting.

Is there currently a bug with Ubisoft Connect on CachyOS/Linux? I've checked the Proton Issues page for both Ubisoft Connect and Far Cry 5 and I can't see anyone reporting anything.

Any help would be much appreciated!

How are b500 and rx 9000 series drivers on Linux these days?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26 Oct 2025 - 12:11am

I know the performance wasn't that great on launch day with Mesa. And I know it has improved over time.

I'm curious If they've improved in the last few months since I haven't read any news on this lately. And how do they compare with Windows at the moment.
