How do I use my PS5 controller?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 10:52pm

I'm running arch on a lenovo ideapad.

I already checked that the controller works. I am trying to play Fallout New Vegas when I was setting up the keymapping i could see the inputs but how do add everything. I tried playing using the controller I still couldn't move. And it's not recognizing the analog stick. Could use some assistance.

Soundcard Drivers Linux???

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 10:13pm

Hello dear community!

I recently switched to Linux, and I use an RME Babyface Pro FS external audio interface.

The official website does not provide Linux drivers, only for Windows and Mac.

Does anyone here have advice that could help me, because right now I can't use my XLR mic or headset?

The driver comes with the driver installation, and a control software for the interface. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure theres other people using DACs out there 😁

Reported Modes Incomplete, Unable to Set Custom Resolution

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 9:20pm

Hey guys

I have an NVIDIA Graphics Card (3080Ti, back from my Windows days) and a 21:9 monitor. Sadly, the only resolutions reported by cat /sys/class/drm/card*/modes are 2560x1080 (21:9), 1024x768 (4:3), 800x600 (4:3) and 640x480 (4:3). This causes both Plasma (X11) and Plasma (Wayland) to be unable to change my resolution to anything 16:9 (or anything other than the named resolutions to begin with).

However, my graphics card actually supports way more than just these solutions (most importantly 1920x1080 (16:9)) but they are not reported.

Are you guys familiar with this issue? Any idea whether it's caused by NVIDIA drivers or the Linux Kernel? How can I overcome this issue and add back all the resolutions my graphics card & my monitor actually support?

How to share one Steam library between two different Linux systems without symlinking compatdata?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 9:12pm

Hi there everyone.

I have this situation on my laptop:
- partition 1 with Linux OS 1
- partition 2 with Linux OS 2
- partition 3 only for Steam library

Now, I see that every time I reboot from one system to another, I must symlink the compatdata folder in my home to the Steam partition, otherwise Steam Cloud does not work. To solve:
- I delete the old symlink
- I do the new one
- and back again every time I reboot to the other system

Is it just me? Is this normal? Can this be made a bit more straightforward?

Thank you in advance.

Ok, here's another suggestion on the anti-cheat situation for Linux multiplayer gamers and other FOSS platforms. How about implementing a trusted kernel module, that anti-cheat programs can use?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:58pm

To come straight to the point: The reason why windows is being preferred by anti-cheat devs is because the NT kernel versions are homogeneous and low in numbers. But mainly it is because the NT kernel is closed source and thus allegedly less manipulable. The anti-cheat dev's belief behind this is "security per obscurity" would work. This thinking is actually quite naive on many levels. In my opinion only an open source app can be really hardened against attacks, as everybody worldwide can read its code and resolve bugs. Meanwhile on windows major disasters like crowdstrike can still happen, as only a few people know the source code and can debug it.

Now with Linux we can not make it close source. This would make the whole idea behind Linux absurd. Also i really dislike and distrust the idea of so called "entrusted", "signed" gaming distros like what Playtron OS ™ seems to achieve. Something about that project smells fishy and like vendor-lock-in to me. Somebody has to distribute that so called entrusted and signed distro and can become easily a monopolist. And this would lead us to the same intransparent situation as with Microsoft Windows.

So how about a different way of offering anti-cheat devs more security but without giving up FOSS? How about adding a kernel module to the linux kernel that can communicate directly to the anti-cheat implementation of a multiplayer game? BUT instead of encrypting that kernel module and distributing it as a closed source binary, the source code could still be open source. We rather calculate a high bit, cryptographic hash function for every new version of that anti-cheat kernel module. Any multiplayer online game can take those official hashes, store them and verify them by their build-in anti-cheat solution. You could make hashes of every single file inside that anti-cheat kernel module to increase complexitiy and security. On top of that you could instruct the anti-cheat solution of a mutliplayer game to verify that anti-cheat kernel module constantly against manipulations of any sorts, meaning some sort of sophisticated real-time check.

As much as i like valve but i would rather suggest to give the authority over a possbile anti-cheat kernel module to a group that shares common interests in gaming development. I was thinking about developers behind SDL. They got much experience with multimedia. input and controls and many game devs implement their solutions into their games. Another group would be KHRONOS who maintain Vulkan. They could establish some kind of anti-cheat API function upon which game developers could agree upon and work on it together.

Anyway, whatever anti-cheat game devs are believing, windows is not the main os platform for games by the way. The most spread os platform for games including online games is Android based on Linux. So sooner or later the game developers have to think about opening up their multiplayer games for other platforms as well. The more performant mobile devices get the more of their users will ask for graphics intensive multiplayer games too. And this means the need for ports if a game studio wants to gain more market share.

[First Timer] Ubuntu 24.04.1 - Mouse cursor laggy while Battle.net is opening + visual issues in and out of WoW

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:40pm

Hey all. I've recently removed my windows partition from dual-boot and this is my second attempt at playing World of Warcraft on Ubuntu with Lutris.

(I uploaded the video to google drive)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UlhhdRLp31JFQml9YtxC0EIN6QJkoH9I/view?usp=sharing

As you can see from my footage above, I'm experiencing a lot of issues with cursor lag everytime I open BattleNet and WoW itself. I've experienced the same issues during the installation process, when the little wine window popped up.

As shown in the video, my BattleNet windows also gets dark when I move it around.

And an extra issue, when stream recording with OBS (as in the footage) or screensharing on Discord, my game and sometimes cursor gets really laggy. Yet the fps doesn't seem to be changing, it's like instead of a smooth camera movement, I get a snappier version, not sure how to explain it but I think you can see it on the video (I recorded it with OBS after all).

What I've done so far:
- followed the Lutris github Battlenet install tips
- followed the Lutris github WoW install tips
- reinstalled Lutris with flatpak (I had installed it from the .deb before, same issues)

If anyone could please help me sort this out, I really do not want to have windows only for playing the >1< game. Thank you all.

Lutris version: 0.5.17 from flatpak
Wine version on the Lutris runner settings is the default: wine-ge-8-26-x86_64

All Steam games limited to 1 or 4 cpu cores

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:26pm

have been having a strange issue recently where my steam games will all launch with their CPU affinity set to a random selection and number of 1-4 cores.

I previously fixed it by completely uninstalling and reinstalling steam but it has recently come back again.

I think I have narrowed it down to the "reaper" process here "/home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/reaper" which always launches with its affinity set to specific cores (usually either 1 or 4).

I have never manually set the affinity of this process aside from allowing it to run on all cores when i noticed it was set to a limited set. Anyone know how to fix this?

Cannot get non-steam games to work with steam input

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:26pm

Like the title says, I cannot get steam input to work with games from Heroic, even when I add them to steam. I have a steam deck and steam input works flawlessly with non-steam games on it, but I have absolutely no idea why I can't get it work on my gaming PC! Anyone has a solution? Any help would be appreciated.

Using Fedora 41 with Gnome btw.

Xbox Cloud Gaming keeps crashing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:26pm

I really wanted to play Halo 5, so I got Game Pass Ultimate with Xbox Cloud Gaming so play it on Linux (otherwise it's not available). When starting the game (or any other game), it loads fine, shows the Xbox spalsh screen, then turns to black and then quits back to the overview in the browser. I'm using ungoogled Chromium on Arch, all up to date. Any ideas what may cause this?

DXVK install?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:20pm

Can anyone please tell me how to install DXVK? I installed it through Winetricks, now I'm not sure what to do. I'm trying to play Red Dead Redemption but it keeps giving me this "A hardware graphics adapter with support for D3D_FEATURE_LEVEL_11_0 is required" error. I stumbled upon DXVK and heard that's great for Linux gaming, but just installing it through Winetricks doesn't seem to work. Am I missing something?

Completely new to Linux, wanna play Skyrim Special Edition

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:16pm

Hey everyone! This is my first experience with Linux. I've been able to play Skyrim Special Edition to a serviceable extent but I would like to tweak a few things. First and foremost: It crashes really often. I know, I know, it's Skyrim, but I mean more than usual. (something like half of my attempts to play it end after a few minutes with a crash, but sometimes I can play for hours just fine) Also, I would like to try modding it, but I have no experience in that field. (I get frustrated and discouraged with technology pretty easily and haven't even tried modding on Windows) Mostly I would want performance/bugfix mods, particularly so that I can run it a resolution lower than 720p for higher frame rate. Maybe I'll get more adventurous with mods later on, idk. Attached are my system specs.

Old Yu-Gi-Oh! Game Crashes after a specific game mechanic trigger

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Nov 2024 - 8:02pm

Hi, I've recently been playing around with Yu-Gi-Oh! Power of Chaos: Yugi the Destiny (BestOfOldGames).
It's a 2003 video game released for Windows, primarily XP.

What happens is, when the game's supposed to adjust monsters' ATK/DEF, the game crashes.
I've done some digging and this person seems to be having the same problem.

This is a Linux specific thing, I've ran the game within a Windows 10 VM and it worked completely fine - modified monster has their ATK/DEF displayed in blue or red, depending on the adjustment.

On Linux, the animation of a modifier card would trigger, up until the point where it's supposed to adjust the monster's attack or defense, then crash.
All Wine / terminal would output is: wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0000013F at address 0040A580 (thread 00dc), starting debugger...

As for what I've tried:
32bit Wine prefix, 64bit Wine prefix, different compatibility modes (Win XP - Win 10)
Different DX9 versions
Different runners: Proton-GE, Sys-Wine, Soda, 2 or 3 different Lutris ones, Caffe, Vaniglia
Different renderer settings within Bottles
Enabling DXVK/VKD3D
Running it through Lutris and one of it's runners
Running it through Steam

Since the VM doesn't use my GPU, I tried disabling it through Bottles by disabling discrete GPU, as well as using Wine flags (LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 WINEUSEGL=1 WINEDEBUG=-all) in both the launch options for that game and the Bottles itself and the environment variables within that Bottle - didn't help.

I'm running out of ideas, anyone know what might be happening?
