Bazzite or Mint for gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 9:03pm

I've decided that I want to switch to Linux from Windows 10. I mostly use my computer for gaming and watching Youtube, so that working is my main priority. I'm currently deciding between using Mint or Bazzite.

I'm more familiar with Mint. The whole reason I even started considering switching is cause I found a thorough guide for how to install Mint and use it for gaming. I like that the Cinnamon desktop looks similar to Windows, and that Mint in general seems very useer friendly. Since it's pretty popular I'm less worried about running into a difficult problem and not finding support as to how to fix it. However I've read that it isn't the best distro for gaming since it uses Ubuntu.

Bazzite is newer to be. A friend recommended it as being specifically for gaming. I like that it has all tools for gaming already installed, like Steam, Lutris, Proton, etc. I also like that it is seemingly more "locked" than Mint, since even though I'm interested in Linux I'm not particularly interested in tinkering with it. However since Bazzite is so new to me there are multiple things about it I'm unsure of. I'm also worried that since it's a less popular distro, there wont be as much info or support about problems online.

Which one should I use? Is there a huge difference or just personal preference?

These posts "i installed linux and i love it (screenshot)" need to go

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 7:49pm

I quitted linux becasue my basic programs didnt works well and no one here had no idea how to solve it, im talking about basic stuff

This subs exists because helping, reporting/fixing bugs, news and etc. If all the subs are flooded with these type of "im on linux team now!" but 0 helping to actual linux users this will go down

Please consider that, less shitposting from new linux users and more real feedback and help but these guys

And by say that all my basic windows software works just worse in linux from steam discord spotify or chrome

On of top of that games like dota had massive stuttering and forza 5 didnt work. Warframe was running just fine

Ah for cracked games didnt try but if i cant make work dota properly i cant imagine any AAA title downloaded from torrents

So resuming more tech talk less garbage

have a good day

Expedition 33 : big freeze and GPU at 100%

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 7:46pm

Hello,

A friend offered me Clair Obscur : Expedition 33 recently. I never had any big trouble running games on linux but this one is capricious for some unknown reasons.

I encounter big freezes (like 5 sec or more). It seem that it's not the game itself that freeze but the entire PC (can't alt-tab when it freeze). Appears to happen when I set the graphics to medium or higher.
My GPU is at nearly 100% when on the main menu and always above 85% when in game which I find it abnormal considering the specs of my PC (detailed below).

I tried those version of proton :
- 9.0-4
- 10 (beta)
- Experimental
- Hotfix
- ProtonGE 10-3

And also some kernel :
- 6.14.6.arch1-1
- lts 6.12.28-1
- zen 6.14.6.zen1-1

Same result with whatever proton-kernel combination.

PC Specs :
- CPU : Ryzen 9 5900X
- MB : MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC
- Cooling : Be Quiet Pure Rock
- RAM : Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2x16 Go 3200 MHz
- GPU : Gigabyte RX 7900 XT
- PSU : BitFenix Whisper M, 750W
- Case : Cooler Master MasterBox MB520 RGB

- OS : Arch Linux
- Session : Wayland
- DE : KDE Plasma

I ran inxi -xxACGS (result below)

What’s a game you only played because it ran well on Linux, and ended up loving?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 7:34pm

You know how sometimes we discover a hidden gem just because it actually plays nice with Proton or has a native build? I recently tried Deep Rock Galactic mainly because it had great ProtonDB reports and now I’m fully obsessed, I never would’ve picked it otherwise.

Got me thinking, what games did you play purely because they ran well on Linux, and you ended up totally hooked? I’m not talking about the usual “it runs on everything” picks, but those games you probably wouldn’t have touched if you weren’t on Linux.

Would love to hear your surprise favorites. Bonus points for obscure stuff!

Weird visual glitch in several games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 7:13pm

I've had this weird texture/polygon flickering in two games: Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas so far
I'm on LMDE 6 and I'm running Proton 7 since that's the only version that would run Skyrim
I have an rx 7600 XT and I'm pretty sure all my drivers are up to date since it's an AMD card
I've tried troubleshooting but I unfortunately haven't found any solutions to my specific issue, I'm pretty new to Linux so excuse me if I'm doing something stupid
Here's the footage from Skyrim

I deleted the Denuvo post. Tho here are some tips for DOOM TDA and Denuvo

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 7:08pm

To begin with, the game somehow started to run, but here is some chronology:

I'm the OP of the post. It was deleted as I could not edit it and there were some things worth adding to it. This error occurred out of nothing. Here I would like to point out that this game comes with Denuvo and Denuvo itself has a limit of 5 game activation's per 24 hours (a "new" PC will count as an activation). Denuvo counts Proton version changes as new activations ("new" PCs as the fingerprint changes). Tho in this case no versions were changed, at least not manually (will write more about that). I'm not sure if Proton Experimental Bleeding updates count as new activations. While Proton gets updated I'm not sure if it generates every time a new Prefix (meaning it should make Denuvo count it as an activation? or so I think)

As I wrote, the game ran last night. Today it refused to load. There was an update to the game today. Upon failure to load I tried switching proton exp bleeding to GE 10-3 (which I recon should be based on an exp bleeding build from a few days ago that worked with the game? again don't quote me on this). Again, game failed to load. Deleted the Prefix, tried GE again - failed. Deleted prefix again, reverted to exp bleeding - fail. Same error which by my judgment is not the out of token error (out of token = out of activations) as as mentioned below, the out of token error gives a different link and no prompt to write to Denuvo.

The link from the error does provide a prompt to write to Denuvo which I did and kindly asked from them to not F with my game. Now it was either that or a revert from proton exp bleeding to just proton exp that got the game loading. That happened in a span of a hour, meaning the 24 hour activation wasn't triggered (well and the out of token error has a different link with no prompt to write to Denuvo). I'm leaning heavily on Denuvo reverting something on their end, rather than something on mine. I did provide a proton log with the exp bleeding edje not working on the github issue tracker so it might be of use to valve.

My advice for this game will be for you to use maybe proton exp instead of exp bleeding (less updates to trigger Denuvo). Or a GE version that works with the game. Just manual proton updates until Denuvo gets removed.

I'm not sure how many tokens I have left and would not retest exp bleeding to see if Denuvo indeed lifted some ban.

Hope this saves someone from headaches with Denuvo. I spent close to 3 hours troubleshooting this instead of playing. Wanted to play for 20 minutes and go do some other work. Thanks Denuvo!

Splitgate 2 Open Beta Doesn’t Run on Linux/Steam Deck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 6:26pm

Save your bandwidth and storage space for now! Even with the latest Proton-GE, Proton Hotfix or Experimental, the game does not launch! Very sad that they chose to include support for Proton in the beta despite having a native Linux port in the first game! Hopefully this will change!

TV starts to flicker when VRR is being used

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 6:19pm

I bought a new TV for gaming and watching movies, which I wanted to use with my PC and PS5. The problem is that whenever I use the VRR setting, the entire screen begins to flicker. FPS and Hz of the screen are desync, I can have 50fps and the screen jumps up to 120. On the desktop it switches between 48-120hz.

On Gnome, this happens instantly when I use VRR. The same thing happens with Plasma when gaming or sometimes when watching videos. Hyprland and Windows same as Gnome.

The TV is a TCL QM8B. The GPU is an RX 9070XT. I'm currently using CachyOS again, but Nobara experienced the same issue.

The PS5 has no problems at all.

Denuvo at it again. Latest DOOM TDA update has Denuvo block the game from starting on Linux.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 4:54pm

Yep it's me again. 24 hour slayer as I would like to call myself. An update dropped today for DOOM TDA and it seems they have set Denuvo to block the game from running under Linux completely. This isn't the token activation error from changing Protons. That one ends in a 6, this one ends in a 5. Pre game update last night the game ran just fine. I totally get having no support but what I don't get is intentionally limiting the game from running. We had the same with BF1 and BF5. Both games ran so smooth under linux (on AMD windows dx12 was a stutter fest while both games ran so good with vkd3d). A forced kernel anti-cheat borked those games. With the state of current gaming you have no idea if a game that runs ok today will even start tomorrow. F Denuvo!

Pokemon tcg live not working anymore

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 4:27pm

Already did a post about this issue 2 months ago, PTCGL stopped working on lutris with any runner when it worked fine 3 months ago using the lutris basic runner. There was some discussion about moving the locallow folder from a windows version to the lutris version but this fix doesn't work.

Does anybody have a fix?

Fedora 42 Workstation - Games on Steam (flatpak and rpm) - Cursor grabbing issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 May 2025 - 4:15pm

Hello everyone.

I'm not an expert on Linux, so I'll just say I've been using it for a bit, but I'm not very experienced with dealing with these sort of issues.,

I run a dual-monitor setup - 1920x1080 60hz and a 1920x1080 75hz. Whenever I launch a game that has a cursor (example Tropico 6, Monster Hunter World), in fullscreen mode (i've made sure it was on Fullscreen), the cursor leaves the fullscreen into the adjacent monitor.

My setup is with main monitor on the right and side monitor on the left.

In Monster Hunter something interesting happens. When I'm playing in a fight, where there is no virtual cursor, everything is fine. When i enter a menu, where the game cursor appears, it can leave the fullscreen.

I've searched and mutiple people have this issue with Wayland from my understanding. I've tried several solutions such as the gamescope grab cursor and such commands, but nothing seems to fix it.

I previously ran Linux Mint and didn't have these issues with X11.

Anyone has a solution for this?
