Radeon 9070 throttling on Ubuntu 22.04.5

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Mar 2025 - 3:26am

Recently switched to an AMD card. I believe I've sorted out the drivers (card shows up in the settings, multiple displays working), but the GPU seems to be throttling itself quite hard. As a test after installation, I booted up some games but they chug along at ~10fps while the utilization is below 10% and the power consumption sits at a dozen watts.

Mission center also shows a clock speed of 96 MHz. Is this the cause of the issue? Is it just a bad card? Am I just missing some settings or drivers?

It's a Sapphire Pure RX 9070.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Mar 2025 - 2:37am

So I've been playing TF2 since 2012 and I think it's about time I contribute to the community, especially with the new community update being in the works. I tried following this post but substituted for Proton9...

I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten this to work on their end, and if they'd be willing to share, for free, out of the kindness of their heart and the spirit of cristmas <3

TL;DR - How get Hammer TF2 on Linux pls????

Nvidia sucks

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Mar 2025 - 2:02am

Okay so background I've been running a 980ti for like along time now, had windows 10 on it was good. Got windows 11 after awhile and just didn't like it, tried out pop OS loved that but still had the occasional problem, distro hopped over to manjaro KDE and it was better worked good etc. Found a sweet deal on a 5700xt on Facebook and just went for it. And omg. And cards works so much better with Linux. All I did was uninstall the Nvidia drivers and everything works better, like I know it's a newer card but Wayland actually works now it was so buggy with the 980ti. Honestly going to stick with and until Nvidia drivers are better with Linux. As the great overload said "fuck you Nvidia 🖕"

Can’t get Bottles to fully utilize GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Mar 2025 - 1:07am

In Ubuntu LTS, I am running flatpak bottle gaming preset with steam installed. Discrete graphics card is enabled and the recommended nvidea 550 driver installed. Whenever I run a game, I get terrible FPS drops while also not fulling utilizing the hardware. For example, if I run black ops 1 in 4K max graphics with fps capped to 240, I will get 240 when looking at the edge of a map, but anywhere from 40-120 when looking toward the middle of a map. During the drops, the GPU still remains at 30-40% utilization, the CPU is around 40-60% utilization, and the RAM is around 25% utilization. The game process is running on the GPU

Unable to add btrfs drive to Steam, no dropdown shows up

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Mar 2025 - 1:03am

Hey all,

I'm using Arch Linux at the moment and set it up to use btrfs. However, I'm having troubles adding a second drive to Steam which I also made btrfs.

Normally when you add a drive in the Storage tab you get that dropdown in the Steam UI with the list of available drives you have mounted but I'm just getting a Dolphin file manager window. At the very least I tried to go to the folder where I mounted this drive to and add it that way but I can't add it. No error messages or anything. I double click the folder and Dolphin closes but Steam still only has my home drive in the Storage tab (which is also btrfs)

I'm on KDE and normally I could just use KDE partition manager to set up the mount point and mount the drive for the first time. I had set it to mount to a folder I called games. I've done this plenty of times because I'm a chronic distro hopper lol and I've always been able to add the second drive.

I figured something was off though because I rebooted a few times and each time the disk was unmounted but I was 100% sure it was set to automount. When I opened the fstab I noticed the drive wasn't being added correctly at all like there were literally no values or parameters so I fixed it and at the very least it now automounts after rebooting. This is how I have it in my fstab at the moment:

# /dev/sda1 UUID=e8da8904-8030-435d-b8a2-a624d16b33c9 /home/[name]/Games btrfs user,nosuid,nodev,relatime,exec,compress=zstd 0 0

Originally the only thing that was there was just the /dev/sda1 text which I commented out and added the rest. Despite it now auto mounting, it's still not being detected by Steam. I don't get the dropdown and I'm still getting the Dolphin window each time. This is the first time this happens to me ever. I even tried reformatting to ext4 (I was ok with reinstalling the games on the drive) and setting it up but even as tried and true ext4 it's still not letting me mount the drive.

Linux gaming Vs cachyOs

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Mar 2025 - 11:42pm

I'm wondering why i'm seeing a lot of folks running nobara but no one talking about cachyOS, isn't the latter supposed to be faster in everything and with the best support for new hardware and drivers and such? Is there some kind of controversy around it? Have i been brainwashed? Last time i checked if i'm not mistaken, it's not even mentioned in the wiki. I'm genuinely curious

I’m so close to just erase my windows install, going full Linux but I have a question about formatting the drives.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Mar 2025 - 11:34pm

So I have a pc with 2 nvme drives, one for windows(pcie gen4) and now one for Linux (pcie gen3), if I decide to erase my windows install, how should I format the drives for better compatibility? Are the drives fine being ntfs or exfat? Better to use ext4 for all of them?

Official MC Launcher won't open (I'm loosing my mind)

OS: Manjaro

KDE: v6.3.3

Kernel: 6.12.19-1-MANJARO (64-bit)

The story-I attempted to do pin official minecraft launcher to my desktop but accidentally clicked "uninstall or manage add-ons...", nothing happened so I assumed it was all good but when I went to open the launcher it gave me the screen as shown on the bottom left. I attempted to reinstall and I thought it was all good, I logged in and was getting ready to start a server too but when I closed the launcher and tried to open it up again it gave me the same screen. I've installed using "git clone" and "yay" but I get the same thing on the second launch (while logged) the only way to make it work is to use this "rm -rf ~/.minecraft ~/.config/minecraft-launcher" command to delete it basically every time I wish to play. As you can imagine it is very annoying.

Throughout my troubleshooting, installing via git clone changed so that is why I had to change write permissions.

My guess is it has something to do with me logging into my Microsoft account because only then it wont open after. Looked through the bug reports and people are getting the same error when launching through the terminal. I know I can probably just use the Prism Launcher, but I am not letting it win.

If you need anything in specific, feel free to just let me know.

Thinking of switching but worried of anti cheats not supporting

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Mar 2025 - 9:46pm

With windows 10 losing support soon I’m thinking of changing to Linux as my pc doesn’t support windows 11. This would be great as I’ve learnt to use it through uni and saves me having to upgrade my pc. But I do still have worries from what I’ve heard about anti cheats not supporting many versions of Linux. Is this really as big an issue as the internet makes it seem or are there easy around?

Emperor of the Fading Suns Enhanced to be Linux Compatible Starting April 4

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Mar 2025 - 8:07pm

Starting April 4, Emperor of the Fading Suns Enhanced on Steam, GOG and Zoom-Platform is designed to be Linux compatible. We have tested this to the best of our ability, and will appreciate anyone else who gets it then giving us feedback on how well it works. FYI, certain features may not work in Linux (like achievements). All Steam wishes are appreciated - a big part of why we made this new Steam build was to make the game finally work with Linux https://store.steampowered.com/app/2799350/Emperor_of_the_Fading_Suns_Enhancedhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/2799350/Emperor_of_the_Fading_Suns_Enhanced

GPU Screen recorder won't capture microphone if "EasyEffects Source" is not the only chosen device

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Mar 2025 - 7:56pm

So I have an issue that If I select my easyeffects microphone it will be captured only if it's the only device selected. Otherwise all other audio is being captured but not me. Choosing default input helps but not much since it's too noisy. Please help

EDIT: Found out that If I set default input device to EE Source in pavucontrol, choose to split audio into multiple tracks and set audio capture to "Default input" it helps, but... Not that's it's really comfortable solution since I want to quickly capture and share videos with my friends, not also merge audio tracks later. Otherwise it's still the same...

Inconsistent RX 9070 XT performance

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Mar 2025 - 7:09pm

Sometimes it boosts to 3 GHz in games, using 250+ W, most of the time it sits around 100-150 W power consumption and a 1,5 Ghz clock, can't figure out how to make it perform like my 3070 did on Windows, pretty much sitting at 100% use at all times in demanding games. Running MH Wilds now I get similar performance to the 3070, but the card is not really trying too hard. I'm on Mint 22.1, updated kernel to 6.14, have kisak-mesa 25.0.2, updated linux-firmware to the most recent one two days ago. Set the system power balance to performance, installed LACT and enabled overclocking (kept everything default for now), set performance level to highest clocks. Any other ideas to get more performance out of the card and basically force it to max out the power draw in demanding situations? I think the hardware itself is installed properly, running OCCT gpu stress test I got it to draw up to its 317 W limit consistently.
