Linux Mint: Every single application can hear and record from my microphone, EXCEPT the game Foxhole on Steam.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 9:12pm

I don't know what else to try because according to literally everything else on the computer everything is fine.

I have a very normal Logictech USB microphone. Linux Mint reads it as "AK5370" and I have it set as default input in my sound settings. Every application can see it with that same name. I can record audio from it and it sounds great! When I open Steam and start Foxhole, the Foxhole game settings also sees "AK5370" as an available input and it lets me set "AK5370" as the input without error. But nobody can hear me. Nobody ever hears me. I have no idea what to ever try because no applications are giving me any error messages. Everything seems fine, according to the computer and Foxhole itself.

So...I'm not even sure what to ask? This just seems silly. Does anybody have any idea what to try? I apologize for not having any sort or error message to paste here.

Will continue playing Battlefield 1 "under" Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 8:15pm

https://preview.redd.it/w7b1b17wm8md1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=f3e83f1f12d2e15782d10ac70a263040091818da

Now for those that are not aware, EA will be adding a kernel level anticheat (I call it a rootkit) to Battlefield 1 this September. They did that to Battlefield V a while back. Result is the game refuses to open under Linux, even singleplayer. BF 1 will go from a game that had a golden rating to being totally unlaunchable.

For me this is very anti-consumer. I bought both games knowing that they don't have kernel level anticheats. Even if I was a Windows user, I would never had bought games with such software. There is a reason I never bothered to buy 2042. What sucks is that BF V is a 6 (six!) year old game and BF 1 is a 8 (eight!) year old game. They were both pretty well established for not having anticheats. Like I've said, if a new games comes with anticheat, I can choose if I want to buy it or not. I never consented to having rootkits on my system.

Both games ran fine under Linux with DX12 (VKD3D), while under Windows both of them have stutters with DX12 and on has to use DX11.

What you are looking in the picture is a KVM Virtual machine with a fully passed GPU to it. That's how I will be playing BF1 after a few days/weeks.

SDL Video error on Quake

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 8:05pm

Here's a screenshot of the error here

I am on Arch with Hyprland. I just moved to Hyprland and had this error, and some other games not working. But this is the only one that gave me an error.

I tried using some of the fixes on protondb, and setting my SDL_VIDEODRIVER to Wayland, but nothing has worked so far.

Need to reboot to avoid black screen in games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 7:34pm

I'm running Linux Mint with a 3070 and for the most part everything is great, but one annoyance that I've been running into is that if I try to launch a game but have not booted/rebooted recently I am met with a black screen in game. A reboot takes care of this every time so I'm thinking its something with the GPU not powering up properly after but I have no idea where to look. Anyone else have this problem and solve it?

X box Elite / series 2 core back pedal support?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 7:21pm

I am thinking about buying a used X box elite or Series 2 core controller since I really want the back pedals for gaming. I am mostly playing connected directly via USB, so Bluetooth is not as important. How is the support nowadays? Is it just plug and play like the Dualsense or are some hacky Drivers required?

Thanks a lot

Modding on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 7:02pm

I've been trying to figure how to mod Linux, I've been going through countless YouTube videos, none are working.

Most recently I've tried using lutris to run vortex, and almost got it working but can't seem to launch my games from steam.

It would be great if there's some native Linux mod Launcher. But until then I'm happy to try work around.

Any ideas or suggestions? (I'm on Linux mint)

Thanks for the time and help

Is there any news regarding nvidia and vrr on multiple monitors ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 6:47pm

I tried going over to linux, i still have it on dualboot but one thing holds me back.
I am the kind of person that likes to have a stream or youtube or anything else open on my second monitor all ... the ... time.

I am alone and it makes me feel less ... lonely i guess.

But every time i go back to linux i cannot do so since any game i launch suddenly looses vrr even when the second screen is not active. I can disable it ofcourse but then why have a second screen at all ?

Has nvidia indicated anywhere if (and +- when) they were going to try and solve this issue ?

The second one is HDR but with plasma it seems to be almost there ?

I am on endeavourOS, latest in wayland session.

Cheers !

Mechanical Keyboard with RGB and Programmable Keys?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 6:01pm

I know this might be a bit of a stretch but are there any mechanical keyboards that have proprietary apps or FOSS on Linux that have both RGB and programmable keys?

I would ideally like both but I will settle for just RGB (even if it doesn't have a gui).

WoW - Wine or Proton/Proton-GE?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 5:52pm

I’ve run WoW under Wine-via-Lutris and Steam/Proton-GE (9-11) and I’m not sure which one is better.

All of them work mind you, so maybe this is just me…min-maxing…but I can’t help feeling like one of them MUST be better, even though there are no real issues.

I felt like when running through Lutris it was a little laggy, not enough to affect gameplay but maybe just in my head, with a crash now and again but not frequent.

I tried to “remove the middleman” of Lutris just to see, and I figured that it runs very smoothly on the Steamdeck and so maybe Proton-GE was the way but had not-infrequent crashing as of the past week. Of course now I’ve just introduced another middleman - Steam, that may not be necessary.

This is also coming on the heels of a new expansion so there could be some game lag/instability in general, but now I’m unsure what the “best” route to stick with is. I’m only wringing my hands about this because as the new Season starts shortly and I will be raiding and doing Mythics I’m trying to ensure I’m rock-solid.

I just keep going back and forth on which I should stick with - Lutris/Wine or Steam/Proton-GE ( regular Proton had all sorts of weirdness ).

Using Fedora 40, KDE Wayland, latest nvidia drivers w/ a 2070 Super, no issues with any other ( Steam ) games FWIW.

Gnome crashing while playing Diablo 4 via Lutris (Fedora 40)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 5:43pm

Hey everyone,

I'm very new to Linux. I'm using Fedora 40 as my new main distro, and so far, everything has worked quite well. However, today I encountered my first real issue while playing Diablo 4 via Lutris. After about 30 minutes, my GNOME session completely crashed, and I was sent back to the login screen. This has happened to me a few times.

This is the error message i got from my log application:

https://preview.redd.it/2e23fbfbx7md1.png?width=2453&format=png&auto=webp&s=03c92f4b2e775ce806f93e375ba17552a285b99b

I hope someone can help me find out what this is.

I am using a amd 6700xt with a amd ryzen 5 5600.

Thanks for the help!

Lethal Company not working.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 4:22pm

So, I want to play Lethal Company since it was a game I used to play. And, I first tried downloading steam, and opening it from there, and it didn’t work. I turned on the compatibly and force compatibility, and still, nothing. I changed my drivers, and it finally let me into the game, but it only showed me the unity sign, the game / creator, and there was a black screen with the mouse in the game, 10 seconds after it crashes with no error. I added back my NVIDIA drivers and I tried playing it again but then it says I need directx11 for some reason. I tried to download a cracked version of it instead and used wine to open it, but I had the same error when I changed my drivers. Please help me! D:

Kde Plasma 6: A battle between HDR and refresh rate

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 1 Sep 2024 - 4:17pm

Hi all,

I recently made the switch from Windows to Linux (Nobara - KDE Plasma 6 with Wayland) and have been having trouble getting HDR to work on my [AW3423DWF](https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/alienware-34-curved-qd-oled-gaming-monitor-aw3423dwf/apd/210-bfsb/monitors-monitor-accessories) monitor. Technically this monitor is advertised as being able to run at 165hz with HDR at 3440x1440 however that is only with 8bit HDR not 10bit. At 10bit HDR, the monitor's refresh rate is set to its next lowest mode which is unfortunately 100hz.

I did not experience this issue on Windows because Windows will automatically lower the HDR to 8bit with dithering which is supported by the monitor. There does seem to be workarounds to get 144hz or 165hz with 10bit HDR (see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/18qszjp/comment/kexokww/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)) however all of these workarounds are Windows specific.

The new and experimental HDR support for KDE plasma 6 seems to be 10bit to my knowledge as I am unable to set my refresh rate to 165hz and am instead limited to 100hz. When I disable HDR I am able to get to 165hz. This is pretty disappointing to me and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution that either:

  1. Involves a Linux specific workaround similar to the Windows where I am able to get the monitor to 144hz or 165hz with 10bit HDR
  2. Downgrades the HDR on my OS to 8bit or 8bit + dithering so that I can make use of the full 165hz refresh rate
  3. Does some clever trick that I haven't thought of

My PC specs in case they matter:
Distro: Nobara 40 - NVIDIA
GPU: RTX 4090
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X
RAM: 32GB
Motherboard: rog strix gaming wifi ii

Thanks in advance!
