Sea of Thieves on Linux... but without steam, possible?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 3:35pm

I have Sea of Thieves on the Microsoft Windows store and I'm looking for a way to even just emulate the Xbox application (even though after a few days of searching it seems impossible). I'm on an arch distro and I'm looking for any way to not have to repurchase SOT on Steam, do you have any advice?

Getting wine to route traffic

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 2:34pm

Hey everyone!

I'm running into a pretty niche situation here and I was hoping yall would have some ideas!

So, I play final fantasy 14, and theres a third party plugin for that game called xivalexander which helps reduce animation lock which is very good for monk gameplay! Anyhow, I've been trying my damnedest to get it to work on linux, but I keep consistently running into issues with the network side. The second I try to log into the game, a socket opens then immediately closes, and the game throws a lobby server error. I tried the dev's alternative for consoles and macs (and linux vms) and it got the same error specifically after setting up network routes to the servers.

I'm wondering if wine/proton can handle that, and if so, how do I go about enabling them? So far I've tried setcap cap_net_raw+epi and modifying /etc/hosts, but neither of these worked.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear em! I really want to get this working, as its such a massive QoL boost for monk. Thanks!

Modifier keys not working with proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 1:43pm

Hello, I’m running linux mint Debian edition (downloaded yesterday). I tried playing games with steam proton and noticed i cannot activate steam ingame overlay and that i can’t run (shift not working) and no modifier keys are not working under proton. Thankfully i can still alt-tab out of the game, but the game didn’t take input. Other letter keys and arrows worked fine. Also tried online keyboard tester and confirmed that modifier keys work. This issue is new to me. I have played these games on ubuntu before under proton with no problems. Does anyone know a fix?

Which distro is best for Nvidia

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 12:53pm

I used Linux in the past had some issues but I went back again and installed Bazzite and so far I am really happy with it. It works fine. I heard about Cachyos being better than Bazzite. So for Nvidia Gpu what would be the best distro.

How do I get Steam on an incompatible ChromeOS?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 11:33am

I just got this chromebook and was totally unaware that you can't get steam! Ive done research and seen that on some chromebooks you can get it but on mine it seems impossible. I've tried all sorts of stuff like flathub but it just doesn't seem to work. Is anyone able to give me a way to do it and maybe even dumb it down for me? Thanks!

[Call of Duty BO6] I have setup a dual boot after 6 months of only using Bazzite

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 7:29am

The experience of Bazzite has changed the way I game and had minimal issues while plaing with friends, until today. (Most are fixed after changing to a different GE version)

As you all know the new Call of Duty game has just dropped and it requires that you use gamepass or pre order the game ”which I wont” + I assumed the anticheat wont be supported on linux.

So that’s where i came to the conclusion to boot windows on a second ssd, as of booting windows, I really don’t see why people still use it “aside from these compatibility”.

Question is: Has anyone tried the COD beta on steam? does it work?

Microstutter/framepacing issues in Wayland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 6:02am

Hello users. My games always report a stable framerate, but in reality they are noticeably stuttering. Even just moving my mouse across the desktop, I can see it slightly stuttering.

Here's an image of my mouse movement across the screen. You can see the mouse does not move a consistent distance per frame.

Adaptive sync doesn't consistently fix the problem, and I'm on multi-monitor so I can't really use it anyway.

Any insight/solutions would be appreciated.

My system specs:

  • openSUSE Tumbleweed 20240829
  • KDE Plasma 6.1.4 (Wayland)
  • Intel i7-14700f (frequency governor is set to performance)
  • Nvidia RTX 4070 SUPER (driver 560.35.03)
  • 32GB RAM
  • 2 monitors at 240 and 165 Hz

Skyrim crashing entire computer under heavy mod load

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Sep 2024 - 5:20am

TL;DR: My entire computer freezes up when I try to run Skyrim SE on a large mod-list through Mod Organizer, but oddly if I load a few mods, quit at the main menu, add a few more, and repeat until they're all active, I can play the game without issues.

Before anything else, the mod list I'm running ran fine on Windows, and even on Linux using the method I mentioned above. Of course I had periodic crashes, but it's Skyrim, so that's to be expected.

Vanilla Skyrim runs fine. My issues started after I tried loading my mods from Mod Organizer, where I have about 3,257 mods active. On Windows, the game does take a few minutes to load, but runs fine after it's started up.

With all of my mods active, my entire computer will freeze up while loading the game initially, before reaching the main menu. What makes this weird though, is that I found that if I load up a few mods, quit the game, activate a few more, load again, and repeat until I have them all active, I don't have problems. After doing this last night, and having a few freezes when I would activate a few too many mods at once, at which point I'd restart the PC, deselect a few, and continue, I was able to play for about an hour without issues. But today, when I went to play again, it froze up again. Obviously I'm not going to spend an hour doing the above steps every time I play.

I think I have ruled out that it's a RAM issue. I have two 32gb sticks and have tried loading Skyrim with each one individually and had the same problem, and I've run memtest multiple times in the past and never found issues, but I'm not going to 100% throw that possibility out, I suppose both sticks could be faulty.

I'm really stumped on this one, and would appreciate any help that any of you could give. Please feel free to ask any further questions that might be helpful and I'll answer to the best of my ability.
