Poor performance on Valve's Deadlock, unsure if stuff isn't set up well or my hardware is awful

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 3:18pm

hello people, trying to play Deadlock and i notice i keep getting some pretty poor performance, i got a good like 40-50 constant fps on the absolute lowest settings + FSR1 anti-aliasing on the lowest possible render %. i know the game isn't optimized yet since it's still in beta but i'm surprised it runs so bad despite the game being "like how it is".

here's my current setup :

OS: Linux Mint 21.3 KERNEL: 6.8.0-40-generic CPU: Intel Core i7-7700HQ @ 2.80GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU DRIVER: NVIDIA 550.107.02 RAM: 8 GB

i know this is more of a soapbox when it comes to gaming with recent games, but does it make sense for deadlock to run this badly, in its current un-optimized state on this hardware? i use GE-Proton 9.12 and can send a screenshot of my in-game settings if needed. i also do the whole virtual memory thing on the terminal so it doesn't crash when going into a game and have swap memory at 4gb.

cheers people!

Linux-Zen vs Linux-LTS Gaming Performance (CS2, Dota2, Starcraft 2 (Proton))

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 2:59pm
My System:
  • i7-8700
  • 32 GB Ram
  • RX 9700XT
  • Garuda Linux

Performance:

Dota2:

  • Kernel: 6.6.49-1-lts
    • FPS: 200-250
  • Kernel: 6.10.8.zen1-1
    • FPS: 80-110

CS2:

  • Kernel: 6.6.49-1-lts
    • FPS: 180-230
  • Kernel: 6.10.8.zen1-1
    • FPS: 70-90

SC2:

  • Kernel: 6.6.49-1-lts
    • FPS: >300
  • Kernel: 6.10.8.zen1-1
    • FPS: 100-120

Question:

Why does the ZEN Kernel perform so much worse? Also i get the same results for the mainline kernel... really bad FPS.

I just checked this because i got a new GPU and i was shocked first (thought the GPU is broken), but with the LTS Kernel everything is working nice.

What steps would you recommend to enhance gaming performance?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 2:35pm

Recently got a new PC and decided to put Linux (Bazzite) on it. While playing Wukong I noticed some minor frame drops (1080p 60fps, Medium RT, most other Settings maxed) which I want to improve. The system currently runs at around 60 degrees (C) during gameplay and consists of an MSI RTX 4080 S, an ryzen 7800x3d, a MSI B650 Tomahawk MB and 32GB DDR5 6000Hz CL30 RAM. What BIOS (currently pretty much stock) changes would recommend to enhance performance while still offering a stable system? Does NVIDIA Framework Generation work on Linux and how do I activate it? Are there any other ways to improve system performance or things I should pay attention to?

Minecraft system overlay

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 2:21pm

Whenever I'm playing something I always have a system overlay active so that I can see how much of my gpu and cpu are being used, but for minecraft I can't figure out how to get that working. I use mangohud for all of my games on steam and that works perfectly, but I have no clue how to get that working for minecraft. I use Linux Mint 22 since I'm new to using linux, but are there any solutions to this? It's mostly just a precaution I have when gaming just to monitor my temps and percentage usages.

FPS recommendations for Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 1:12pm

Hey, as the title says, I'm really into shooters. I recently switched to Fedora, and it's been great! However, I still have a second SSD with Windows, but I would love to play some shooters on Linux. Do you have any recommendations? Normally, I play these (aside from single-player games):

  • Battlefield 1, 5, 2042
  • CS2 (which I tried on Linux, but it was a mess—really bad)
  • PUBG

Thanks for the recommendations!

Have a nice one!

Thrustmaster TMX

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 10:07am

Hello. Has anyone managed to make the Thrustmaster steering wheel work on Linux with force feedback? I have tmx but I can't deal with it. I tried installing this: https://github.com/scarburato/t150_driver

but I get error:

==== LOADING NEW MODULES ====

modprobe: FATAL: Module hid-t150 not found in directory /lib/modules/6.9.12-205.fsync.fc40.x86_64

I also found this: https://github.com/emtek995/TMX-driver

But I don't really know how to install it. Is there any chance to activate this steering wheel? This is the only thing that keeps me using Windows as a gaming system. Neither Oversteer nor the built-in game controller application sees my steering wheel (but it's visible after typing lsusb in terminal). I'm using BazziteOS

Lock Nvidia gpu p-state

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 9:43am

I have noticed and found across nvidia forums that nvidia changes p-states more aggressively on linux compared to windows, for example scrolling in reddit or jetbrains ides makes the p-state jump to p5-p3 and consumes 30w while on windows it would draw a maximum of 15w which is p8 limit.

Why is this a problem ? I am using a laptop so this makes fan noise unnecessarily high on light workload. Also, locking the power limit is not an option on mobile gpus. So is it possible to lock the p-state at p8 ?

Random screen freezes causing PC restarts?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 8:32am

So I've always had this problem with Linux for the past year I've had it and I'm going to try and ask again to see if I can get some help.

Essentially in random games sometimes my screen will freeze and I can't do anything but move the mouse. I can still hear for a bit and after awhile it will stop and I can still talk in discord and my keys are doing things.

I keep thinking this is a graphics card error.

I have a rx6600 and I have pop os I just installed the most recent drivers on AMD website and nothing changed.

This happens with a few random games so I'm pretty sure it's not Elden ring or minecrafts fault.

Most games run fine sometimes

The Sims 3 on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Sep 2024 - 8:18am

Hi All,

I have the Sims3 Steam version1.67 installed and running in Linux under Lutris (I'm running Nobara 40).

The FPS is going crazy above 2000fps, and its making the GPU suffer some coil whine which I don't like.

To limit the FPS I've tried to set Lutris to limit it to 60, doesn't work. I've tried the mods from LazyDuchess which also don't work to limit the fps.

Anyone know some other way I could limit it? I'm confident there may be a setting elsewhere in Lutris.
