CachyOS - Steam/Proton Playing modded games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 7:29am

My 5yo win10pc is about dead on Win10 and not eligible for Win11.

I'm seeing that ProtonDb is saying I can play all the fallout and baldurs gate games, but wondering if that includes mod support and how different that would be.

For Fallout4 it required replacing a few dlls and then you had to manage the load order, sometimes making patches so that mods don't overwrite each other.

I'm interested in playing fallout vr, fallout4 both with mods. Fallout London is basically a huge mod on Fallout 4.

Solution to get AC: Black Flag working on Steam ("Unable to find Ubisoft Game Launcher" error)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 7:03am

These steps might (not) work on Steam Deck, might (not) work for AC2 and other titles, or might vary depending on your distro. Of all the solutions google coughed up, nothing worked for me, so I had to hack this together from experience. Hope this saves somebody the frustration.

For anyone struggling to run this on Linux- without Lutris/Protontricks:
(on receiving the "Ubisoft Launcher not installed" error, perform these steps)

  1. Download the latest Ubisoft Connect Installer executable from their website.
  2. In Steam, top left menu, Games -> Add a non-steam game to my library...
  3. Click "Browse..." and navigate to the folder containing the downloaded .exe. (If your browser's downloads are set to default, /home/username/Downloads/ )
  4. Select the UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe and click ok.
  5. Right click the newly added non-steam game from your library, named "UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe" by default, and select "Properties"
  6. In left pane, "Compatibility", select the checkbox and select your version of Proton and close out of the dialog.
  7. Launch the "UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe" game from Steam by hitting Play and go through the entire install process with the defaults. At the last step, do not launch UbisoftConnect yet. Uncheck and close it.
  8. Locate the newly installed UbisoftConnect.exe. You can use a file search (i use Catfish on Mint) to locate the most recently modified UbisoftConnect.exe . By default, my path was: /home/username/.steam/root/steamapps/compatdata/2729711752/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher/
note: the folder "2729711752" might vary, but it should by another equally long number in that directory.
  9. Make sure the UbisoftConnect.exe is present, and copy the path.
  10. Now right click on Black Flag in your library and select Properties.
  11. Paste the copied path into the launch options and then match it to this exact syntax (without the quotation marks) :
    " PROTON_REMOTE_DEBUG_CMD="/home/username/.steam/root/steamapps/compatdata/2729711752/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher/UbisoftConnect.exe" uplay://launch/*gameID*/0 "
    Then close the Properties dialog.
11a. The above command makes the Ubisoft launcher open in the same "container / instance" as Black Flag so that it is detected by the game.
  12. Right click on Black Flag in your library, Manage -> CD keys. Click on it to copy it to clipboard.
  13. Click "Play" on Black Flag, and wait for the Ubisoft launcher to pop-up. If your launch options worked, you should no longer get the error here.
  14. If prompted to login to Ubisoft, do so. You should be prompted to enter your Black Flag CD key. Paste it from Clipboard.
  15. Ubisoft Launcher will add it to your Ubisoft library and finally launch your game.
16(optional). Remove the "UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe" non-steam game from your library.

I need help with Resident Evil 2 GOG Version on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 4:30am

This is really distracting and I've tried everything that came to mind.

I installed Classic Rebirth, but that doesn't even launch on linux (If someone knows a way please tell me)

I changed resolution, turned off and on v-sync, raised anti-aliasing and disabled it, ran it on windowed mode and full screen. But no matter what these lines are always there!

I don't know what to do anymore does someone have a solution for this?

Helldivers 2 runs pretty poor on Arch linux.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 4:24am

Not sure if its my hardware or if I'm missing some packages, back on windows I have a somewhat stable 50-ish fps but Helldivers just struggles to go above 30 fps and runs pretty poor on linux. I have dual amd cpu and graphics card and have installed vulkan-radeon with --use-d3d11 in steam startup options with proton experimental. Can anyone else share their setup or provide any tips? Sharing system specs below too:

I know it's not a game.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 3:01am

I have the games I play working. What I'm missing in Linux is the functions for correcting the design of 3D parts. There comes a message telling me to use Windows.

I use the orca slicer. The other slicers don't complain about anything.

Can’t get battlefront 2 (2017) to start on Linux mint

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 2:49am

Recently bought battlefront 2 on steam and tried to play it, but the ea app either doesn’t start or doesn’t load properly.

When I use proton 7, the ea app loads up without any ui elements, just a blue box.

When I use other proton versions, steam is able to launch the game, but the game doesn’t start.

I have tried to download the ea app with lutris, but that doesn’t seem to work either as I can’t start the game through the app.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game and it still doesn’t work.

Has anyone run into similar problems with this game?

Any help would be appreciated.

Looking to make the switch!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 2:37am

Tech literate, but would rather not have to configure every little thing as IT is my major. My main use case is gaming but I'm not looking for a "gaming only" distro like Bazzite as this is my main PC. I've used Mint on my laptop for a while and enjoyed it, but have seen conflicting opinions on everything to the point that I have no idea what is good or not. Any reccomendations or general advice is greatly appreciated. :D

I can't play games because Steam won't let me not use proton.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 2:05am

My GPU (HD4850) doesnt support Vulkan but it does support OpenGL. American Truck Simulator has a OpenGL Version, but I can't seem to select it because it keeps opening through proton. I had the option for OpenGL on windows, but on linux it doesn't let me use OpenGl by the looks of it. I also cant sort by games with native linux support because its making all games show up as "games that can run on linux". Do they just assume my card can use proton?

Diablo 4 random crashes / black screens

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 1:40am

Hello,

I got the expansion pack for Diablo 4 on steam this summer sale and have been playing the season for a bit.

Sometimes, I cannot exactly pin point it, the game either completely freezes or goes into a black screen (which is sometimes recoverable). I did play D4 before the addon and it was completely fine - same setup (hardware), but of course different kernel, or drivers..

I am using X11, on the latest 6.16 linux kernel, with a nvidia 3080 using the latest drivers, on an arch based OS (EndeavourOS).

Anyone else has this issue and know what could fix it?

I read on the internet that its something to do with latest DLSS, but I have been trying it without, and with, and even with FSR2 - changing that option didnt seem to change anything.

Thanks!

Suggestions for Steam Sale games that run natively on Linux and are high in replay value?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jul 2025 - 1:26am

Looking for inexpensive gems that are in the summer sale and are high in reply value. Anything released in the last 15 years is fine because I don't keep up with games so I probably missed it. Needs to run natively on Linux via the Steam app.

I'm not really a fan of "management" sims or games like that. Games with lots of story or RPG elements are fine though I'm looking more for platform/action/racing/etc type games than full-blown RPG.

File picker opens when launching any game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Jul 2025 - 11:30pm

This has started happening recently, and so far I have no clue as to why.

I'm running Arch Linux (fully updated) with an AMD 7900X and Radeon 7900XT, using the latest version of Heroic launcher (2.17.2 non-flatpak) and GE-Proton 10.8.

Every time I try to run a game, or run any executable via wine, before it runs, I get a file picker window that opens up. No matter what I pick, or even if I just close it out, the game will continue to load up normally afterward. This has been happening for a few weeks now, so I'm not sure exactly when it started. I'm just getting tired of it is all.

Has anyone seen this before, and hopefully know how to get rid of it.?

Death Stranding Director's Cut - Inconsistent GPU usage

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 Jul 2025 - 10:42pm

Specs:

OS: Arch Linux

KERNEL: 6.15.4-arch2-1

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT (radeonsi, navi33, LLVM 20.1.6, DRM 3.63, 6.15.4-arch2-1)

GPU DRIVER: 4.6 Mesa 25.1.5-arch1.1 (vulkan-radeon driver, NOT amdvlk)

RAM: 16 GB DDR4

Long story short. I installed the game on my main drive, a Corsair M.2 NVME SSD. I can boot up and get in game. At 1440p and mostly high settings, the game runs at a solid ~100-115 FPS, so long as there are no holographic elements on screen that is.

The first image is an example of how the game should by all means run in most cases. You can see that I'm at 113FPS at 89% GPU usage. As soon as any holographic HUD/UI elements come onto screen, ie. when I zoom into the binocular view and target the waypoint, my GPU usage plummets and the FPS goes with it. This also stacks, meaning the more of these holographic HUD/UI elements are on screen, the worse my usage and FPS become. This is demonstrated by images #2 and 3. This includes waypoints, signs placed by players, tool tips/hints, mission info, etc.

Things I've tried:

Different proton versions. Several proton version all launch and get in game, all have the same GPU usage issue relating to the holographic UI elements.

I've tried with and without Feral gamemode enabled.

I've attempted to limit the amount of CPU cores the game uses (I heard somewhere this game doesn't like more than 12 threads?). I tried taskset -c 0-3 and MangoHud still reported 16 threads in use. WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=8:0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 did seem to work (I also tried this with only 4 cores enabled as I wasn't sure if this command limited threads or physical cores), however the only difference I noticed in performance was that my baseline (the times where my GPU was actually being used) performance was worse with this setting.

I tried setting the argument PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 but this resulted in a failure to launch, and an error message (last picture) complaining that my GPU doesn't support DX12 (worth noting that the GPU shown in this error message, an ATI Radeon 5600, is not my actual GPU, an RX 7600XT, which does in fact support DX12). I have not found a way to get the game to launch in DX11 besides using modified DLLs which I'd rather avoid.

I tried using winecfg via Protontricks to change Windows versions. I tried various versions which either failed to launch complaining about not being above a certain release of Windows 10, or simply resulted in no changes if the game did launch.

None of these attempts made any difference in performance excluding the CPU core limit making things worse. Beyond that, I really don't know what else to try. I've seen some other people mention poor GPU usage, but most of those posts seem to imply that it's consistent. My issue seems to be directly tied to the onscreen holographic HUD/UI elements, which are very common in this game and really can't be avoided. If anyone has any ideas, whether it be a surefire fix or a random spitball hail mary, I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance.
