Vulkan seems to think I have an nvidia GPU even though I have an AMD GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 12:31pm

Hi All! This this my first team red PC so I'm pretty new to all this AMD stuff I can't run anything vulkan so any help is much appreciated!

I'm currently using the vulkan-amdgpu-pro package as my vulkan driver I've tried other Vulkan drivers (amdvlk, vulkan-radeon) but that didn't make a difference

machine spec: ..os Arch x86_64 kern 6.16.1-zen1-1-zen ..wm herbstluftwm .cpu AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D .gpu AMD ATI Radeon Graphics .gpu AMD ATI Radeon RX 9070/9070 XT/9070 GRE .mem 4024MiB / 94159MiB (4%) I'm only using the RX 9070 XT as this is a tower not a laptop so the iGPU is unused

Controllers for flight simulators

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 11:54am

I began playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and I am absolutely hooked up.

The only issue is that I play with Xbox controller and I want to upgrade to the proper flight sim controllers.

I recon Logitech should work out of the box, and their Yoke looks pretty good, but it has pretty limited ROM (you can turn it only to 45°, so basically for each degree on the controller you'll get 2° on the yoke in the game).

X56 looks also good and I considered it too, but I would have preferred to have a yoke instead of a stick.

Thrustmaster or Honeycomb controllers look like a better choice (especially Honeycomb's Captain Bundle), but I am not sure if they will work in Linux

What do you play flight sims with and what can you recommend?

Linux not being able to run Roblox is a miracle

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 11:05am

So why you may ask? Because of the current Roblox situation where schlep a YouTuber who arrested pedophiles to protect kids got banned from Roblox all because he didn't report the pedophiles to Roblox knowing fucking well that Roblox moderation is ass and won't do anything about them because they've been roaming free for years on Roblox and what did Roblox do about those pedophiles? Absolutely nothing in short: it's good to not be able to play a game that defends pedophiles

Final Fantasy X HD and Farplane

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 10:25am

I am trying to get the Programm Faplane https://github.com/topher-au/Farplane to run as the same time as Final Fantasy X. I have them both with the same prefix but I can only start one program. If I start the game Farplane wont start and the other way around its the same problem. Is that just a proton limitation that you can't run two things simultaneously under the same prefix or am I making some mistake?

Bad performance in multiple games, driver used seems correct & up to date. Help requested!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 8:34am

Hi all, I've fully switched to Linux Mint (Cinnamon, default latest install) in the past few days, but I am seeing way worse performance hits than I expected in some games:

  • Satisfactory: down from 100-90 FPS (Windows) to 60-40 FPS, and even at 60 it feels very stuttery still. I tried DX12, Vulcan, and DX11, all the same results. Settings all on high.
  • Baldurs gate 3. On windows I got 80-90 FPS on high consistently, with a slight dip in Baldurs Gate itself. On my linux install I am now getting 30 FPS in a relatively small area. Tried both DX11 and Vulcan, same results.
  • Trackmania: dropped from 100-120 FPS to 60-70 FPS, and the 60 FPS feels like a very stuttery 60 FPS again.

Here's my system information from inxi:

System: Host: loci-pc Kernel: 6.8.0-78-generic arch: x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Cinnamon v: 6.4.8 Distro: Linux Mint 22.1 Xia Machine: Type: Desktop System: Gigabyte product: Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI v: N/A serial: <superuser required> Mobo: Gigabyte model: Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI-CF v: x.x serial: <superuser required> UEFI: American Megatrends v: F11 date: 10/15/2019 CPU: Info: 8-core model: Intel Core i9-9900K bits: 64 type: MT MCP cache: L2: 2 MiB Speed (MHz): avg: 800 min/max: 800/5000 cores: 1: 800 2: 800 3: 800 4: 800 5: 800 6: 800 7: 800 8: 800 9: 800 10: 800 11: 800 12: 800 13: 800 14: 800 15: 800 16: 800 Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA TU104 [GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER] driver: nvidia v: 570.169 Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.11 with: Xwayland v: 23.2.6 driver: X: loaded: nvidia unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa gpu: nvidia,nvidia-nvswitch resolution: 2560x1440~144Hz API: EGL v: 1.5 drivers: nouveau,nvidia,swrast platforms: gbm,x11,surfaceless,device API: OpenGL v: 4.6.0 compat-v: 4.5 vendor: nvidia mesa v: 570.169 renderer: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2

And 16GB of RAM. Everything is installed through steam, and I'm using Proton Experimental. Playing on a 144hz 2560x1440 monitor.

Things I've tried:

  • Switching between DX11/12/Vulcan whenever possible: made no difference.
  • I tried both the Nvidia 575 version as well as 570 version installed through driver manager. Made no difference switching between the two.
  • Ensured that secure boot is turned off.
  • Checked with inxi -G that the "nvidia" driver was still used when in-game

I've searched through Reddit and most suggestions/answers seem to be regarding secure boot/driver issues, which seem to not be the case for me? Any help would be appreciated!

Id like to try to learn to make a game, but have no idea where to start.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 7:44am

Basically, I want to make my own version of Sea Rogue. It's one of my favorite games ever, and I'd like to see if I can make something like it on my own. I don't have any interest in trying to publish or sell it.

Can y'all give me any advice oh how to get started? Tools, programs, etc? I'm on Garuda Linux.

Borderlands 3 Screen Going Black

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 6:49am

So I'm having some issues playing Borderlands 3. This problem only started happening after I got so far into the game. For about 60 hours of playtime, I did not have this problem. Then one day certain parts of it started cutting out. I can only assume this was after updates. I played most of this game in Linux Mint 21.3, but have since installed CachyOS and still have the same problem.

EDIT: So this does in fact appear to be a CachyOS problem. I'm booted into Mint 21.3 right now was able to watch all the pre-menu splashes and loading screens with no black screens. It's working fine in Mint. Is it a Wayland thing?

Parts of the game will just go completely black on my 3440x1440 UWHD monitor including the pre-menu splash screens and loading screens. I no longer see the Gearbox intro, for example, or Claptop prancing across the screen as the menu loads. It does eventually load into the menu, however, and I am able to resume my saved game. However, when looking in certain directions the screen will go completely black. Sometimes it will come back and sometimes I must look in a different direction to make the display return. I think that in some cases it might have something to do with draw distance? At one point I was looking into the distance over this huge drop that you jump down and the screen would go black, yet when I moved the mouse to peer at my feet, the image would return. When opening menus or the map, the screen will go black briefly before finally displaying said menu or map. It's rendering the game unplayable. What makes it stranger is that when I alt-tab out of the game into any other window, it will display the game just fine in the background, but once I return it to focus, it goes black again.

I've tried the latest version of GE-Proton. I've tried a few older versions. I've tried Proton Experimental and the native CachyOS Proton package. I've tried enabling/disabling shader precaching, vertical sync, framerate cap. I've tried Windowed full screen, full screen. I've verified the integrity of local files.

I'm running CachyOS, as mentioned. I run updates every time I shut the machine down. I'm not sure if the distro is relevant as I mentioned I played most of this game in Linux Mint if I recall correctly it started happening in that distro as well before I installed CachyOS. I will log back into my Mint installation which I still have for the time being and make certain of that. I will edit this post when I've done so.

EDIT: Again, as mentioned above, this issue has occurred since installing CachyOS. I don't know what it is about this distro causing issues but I thnk it might be Wayland related.

I have 32GB DDR4, AMD Radeon RX7800 XT Nitro+, Asrock B550M Pro4, Ryzen 7 5700X3D.

If there is any other information required, just let me know.

Does anyone have any ideas? This is maddening.

How to set up Mod Organizer 2 on Linux for Skyrim?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 5:32am

I am trying to install Mod Organizer 2 on Linux for Skyrim by putting the .exe file for MO2 on Steam and running it via Proton. Installation was fine until I needed to create an instance. Specifically, I am prompted with selecting Skyrim's file in the file explorer so MO2 can create an instance around it, but I'm not sure where I need to look or if Skyrim's file is even in the file explorer that's in the installation.

Even after I finish installation though, how will I boot up the installed version of MO2? Will it be automatically added to my Steam library? I should be left with only the .exe, no?

I'm using MO2 because I read it's able to detect all the mods of a save (I used Vortex when I was on Windows) and unexpectedly I actually still have my old Skyrim save, which I would like to continue. I just need to get MO2 running so I can redownload all my mods and continue the old save.

Please let me know if I need to elaborate on anything. Honestly modding Skyrim on Windows was difficult so doing the same on Linux seems intimidating but I'm dedicated and am certainly not constrained by time. Thanks for any assistance.

Help with excessive Vram usage

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 4:11am

Hello so couple of months ago I've completely switched to Linux, tested all my games and they run normally. However I've noticed that I would get these random lag spikes when playing Dayz and they would be unpredictable, and the only way to fix them would be to restart the game. I've started to monitor everything to get to the bottom of this and I've noticed that when they occur the Vram utilisation is at 100% aka 8gbvram, restarting the game fixes it for the next 2 hours or so but I want to prevent this from happening in the first place any ideas?

Specs: Linux mint GPU: RTX 4060 CPU: Ryzen 5 7600 Motherboard: B650m d3hp 32gb ram 1TB nv3 SSD

Issues with Nvidia on ubuntu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 2:37am

hi I'm relatively very new to linux and have only used mint before. context is on my daily driver laptop the wifi option stopped showing up on windows and nothing was working so i got annoyed and dual booted to ubuntu. since then idk how my windows boots up at 100% cpu usage and all my games close because of not enough memory. as for ubuntu the games work through proton experimental on steam very well. ex: elden ring at 60fps for 1st 15 mins. and then the fps tanks. what could be the reason for this and how do i fix it? specs: msi gf 63 ultra thin laptop rtx 3050 4gb vram intel i5 16gb ram using proprietary nvidia 575 drivers and prime-select query shows nvidia as well

Issues Running Rivals on Arch Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Aug 2025 - 2:00am

Hello!

I'm new here. I joined because I feel like I've exhausted all possible ways to try and make Marvel Rivals work. Below is my current specs and launch options I use for the game. If anyone has gotten this to work please let me know what you did. (Also I run this on a gaming laptop with dual GPUs which is why the launch options have the GPU specified)

Thank you for the help.

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia SteamDeck=1 gamemoderun %command% -PSOCompileMode=1

There also this concerning tidbit. When I close Rivals, my screen occasionally looks like this.
