Punishing gray raven: Can't go beyond the launch button of the launcher in Arch Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 2:10pm

As stated in the title the game itself does not launch, but the launcher itself operates perfectly fine. I am running Arch with KDE plasma6 (wayland) and use "Heroic games launcher" for my gaming. I run the game under WINE-GE-Proton-8-26 and have used winetricks to make sure the most commons DLLs mentioned in fixes here are there (msvcrt40, mfc140, msv140).

I have also tried doing this entirely on steam as provided in this guide: https://youtu.be/ztg5jun9P1U?si=ng3kJafm9L9FlHbC. I am aware this is steam deck but it's based on arch so it *should* still apply, I also used GE-proton-9-13 when following this guide. Other versions don't seem to perform any better.

I have also tried to manually download the DLL and soft link it to the game files so it'd read it, same problem.

I am aware that ACE (Thank you EA) is responsible for a lot of trouble but if someone somewhere has it working, even if under a windows virtual machine, I'd love to know.
The proton log can be made available if required, I'm more than happy to give a pastebin link.

(Before mentioning waydroid, I know it'd work but I want to get the PC launcher working since it's a smoother experience overall.)

Can't stream Desktop with Steam link, only games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 1:59pm

Hi, I have an old steam link lying around and before I got Linux I used it to stream from various providers from my Pc to my TV (it's an old one and not a fancy "Smart TV"). That worked decently well, as steam link Broadcast my entire screen (not just a game) to my TV.

However now that I'm on Linux, steam only streams the games and not the entire screen. Video and Audio of the game comes through, but everything else only gets Audio and a black screen with my cursor.

I've tried adding both VLC and the default mp4 Player to a steam as a non-steam game with the same Black screen result.

Any help?

I'm on arch Linux on KDE Wayland with an nvidia gpu. My steam link and PC are in the same network. For more information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Gaming performance and general stability

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 10:25am

Hello there!

I made the switch to Linux for my main rig, which I also use for gaming, so I am somewhat new to this. I know that most arch based gaming distros perform very similar, but as far as I've seen, non arch and non fedora tend to be way slower and to run more often into problems, due to not having more recent updates for the graphics cards or other similar things and fixes.

I've noticed the general trend (not necessarily in this sub) of people recommending to beginners things like Mint or other Debian based stuff because they are "more stable". My question is what "more stable" means in this context? My experience with Mint and Ubuntu was pretty horrible on my other machines, it was slower, things tended not to work at all out of the box, I didn't like stuff like super old Libre or other outdated software.

Any other advantages besides maybe avoiding the occasional breakage of the system on updates on bleeding edge? (which I just fix by rolling back with Snapper) I get Debian for servers and such, as I also use similar stuff for hosting or similar. This is not a critique or promotion or anything like that, I am mainly interested in the mentality of recommending Mint and Ubuntu (which both I do find great btw) to beginners because they somehow are more easy or stable or something like that.

My machine: OS: Garuda Linux x86_64 Kernel: Linux 6.10.9-zen1-2-zen Uptime: 2 hours

Packages: 1793 (pacman)[stable], 1 (flatpak) Shell: fish 3.7.1 Terminal: konsole 24.8.1

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (12) @ 4.20 GHz GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT [Discrete] Memory: 6.46 GiB / 31.26 GiB (21%)

Thanks for taking the time to read!

Auto-click under Linux for Logitech mouse

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 9:49am

Hi,
I'm using latest Fedora with Logitech G502 Hero mouse. Under Windows I could easily set up one of my mouse buttons for auto-clicking through GHub. However, this type of macro requires active GHub and cannot be stored in mouse on-device memory.

How can I achieve similar result under Linux? I cannot see such auto click macro under piper/libratbag or Solaar. Libratbag can only fill the role of autohitting specific key, but not auto click.

Webview2 in wine or proton?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 9:34am

Trying to run a game modding tool to add UEVR and UUVR to games. I'm getting an error trying to run it in Wine and Proton. since this sub, doesn't allow attachments with text, this is the error:

Webview error. This usually means something is wrong with your Webview2 installation. You can try to repair it by going to Windows Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, then finding “Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime” and picking “Modify” from the three dots menu. If that doesn't work, search online for "Microsoft Edge WebView2", and download the installer from Microsoft's website. Would you like to open the logs folder?

I've tried installing webview2 from microsoft into the prefix as suggested by the error, I've tried installing winetricks like dotnet40 vbrun20XX and vcrun20XX, changing windows versions, but nothing seems to work, I keep hitting a dead end. for a split second sometimes I get a black window. any advice?

Partition layout suggestions

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 8:10am

Hey guys

I'm building a PC for linux gaming with Fedora KDE, and I would appreciate your advice on how to build the partition structure in my SSDs. I have the following SSDs at my disposal:

  • MX500 500 GB SATA SSD;
  • MX500 1TB SATA SSD;
  • 2x Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD.

I would like to install my games on the NVMe's and use SATA's for system installation (500 GB) and data disks (1 TB).

Questions:

Will I be missing considerable performance by using a SATA as the boot disk?

Can you please suggest me a partitioning scheme?

Should I allocate the swap partition in a NVMe?

What would be the partition sizes you recommend for the system in the SATA (if going this route is a good idea)?

Any other input is appreciated!

The rest of the system is: 7800X3D, 4090, 64 GB DDR5 6000 MHz CL30.

I heard that games don’t use 100 percent of cpu and gpu when on arch, is that still a thing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 8:07am

Thinking about doing the switch, but I have heard that because of this you get less fps on arch than windows

wine/lutris question

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 7:42am

sorry for being rude but re-asking my question because people don't know how to read.
my question was removed for asking about something that's in the FAQ, despite the fact that
the main body of my question wasn't answered but asking for someone read in full is too hard.

I'm thinking of setting up a small retro gaming rig for games from around 1995-2009. Many of these older games don't run on Windows 11 since they were built for Windows XP, Vista, or 7. The few I do get to work usually want a 5:4 aspect ratio, and things get buggy if it's not set to that native resolution.

My main question is: how well does Wine handle retro games? What’s the compatibility like? any recommendations on hardware? I’ve got a lot of experience building PCs, so that part isn’t a problem, but the only spare parts I have right now are an RX 6400 and a GTX 1070, way overkill for this, But would they even work with Wine? I’m not sure how that would go.

Mic constantly cutting out on Vesktop and Discord

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 6:39am

I recently moved to Arch and have been using Vesktop without issues until recently, when the mic audio drops out every secondish. I have tested this in my audio control and a website (https://mictests.com/) and the issue only persists on discord clients (Vesktop, discord native, discord web). The audio does not completely cut out, but rather lowers to the point where you cannot hear it. I have noise cancellation off. I am using pipewire for audio.

Attached is a video of what my mic output looks like on Vesktop with a constant humming into the mic.

Thanks for your help!

retro linux gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 5:21am

I can't give up Windows on my main PC because I play a lot of online games with anti cheat. However, I'm thinking of setting up a small retro gaming rig for games from around 1995-2009. having trouble installing bomber girl

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14 Sep 2024 - 5:21am

Throwing a shot in the dark here cause the game is really niche. But I'm trying to install Bomber girl, a japanese only spin-off of Bomberman. I played it with a friend on windows awhile ago and wanted to try installing it on linux. But I'm having trouble, the game installs using a .msi installer for reference. I can get it to open in wine 9.15 but it just freezes after clicking install and I can only close it by killing the process. Lutris can get me through without freezing but I get an installation failed error and I should try again later (that's what it seems to say, my japanese is not great) Terminal (for wine) says: "002c:fixme:winediag:loader_init wine-staging 9.15 is a testing version containing experimental patches.

While lutris with wine GE 8-26 says:

"Started initial process 260 from /home/user/.var/app/net.lutris.Lutris/data/lutris/runners/wine/wine-ge-8-26-x86_64/bin/wine msiexec /i /home/user/Downloads/BomberGirl_Installer.msi

wine: RLIMIT_NICE is <= 20, unable to use setpriority safely

I've tested the installer in regular wine 9.15, lutris with wineGE 8-26. I've tried in both Kubuntu and fedora. I thought I was missing a windows dependency or dll but I don't know. Any help is greatly appreciated.

in the event anyone wants to try themselves.
