New user, fans spin but not fast enough to cool off my gaming laptop leading to overheating

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Jan 2026 - 2:23am

My gaming laptop is brand new, less than 10 months old. Now booting Ubuntu for the past 2 months, anytime I play a higher performance game, my fans' speed never reaches the max of what Windows was hitting. I don't have any bios options to increase my fan speed. Is there anything I can do?

Can't get game both fullscreen and not zoomed in/cropped

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Jan 2026 - 2:19am

Hello!

I recently switched to linux (ultramarine/fedora 43 with gnome), and so far games were pretty plug-and-play. I was able to run Grounded and God of War without any issues, apart from performance issues in Grounded. I have an nvidia 3060 mobile and after a lot of troubleshooting I still have some issues with the drivers so I'm not too surprised by that.

However, I installed Mars First Logistics and that one hasn't worked as well. When just running it, it was zoomed in the upper left quarter of the game's rendered output. And changing the resolution made the image lower quality but not actually scaled differently. Using protontricks and winecfg, setting use virtual desktop solved the issue, but now I have the window decorations and the gnome top bar visible. I tried fiddling with some of the settings there but to no avail. And I also tried using gamescope but that did not work, it gave errors when launching the game, possibly due to my nvidia card.

Any other tips I could try?

Thanks!

Edit: I just tried on a different monitor and it seems to work perfectly without virtual desktop? I was using my laptop connected to a TV before and now connected to a monitor, both 4K. Not sure what would be different, scaling was set to 100% on the TV and 125% on the monitor so if anything, I'd expect the monitor to not work well...

How do you deal with in game sensitivity and DPI?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Jan 2026 - 1:43am

Basically, I came from Win 11, and I in that OS I was running 1600 dpi - 0.43 in game sens (CS2), with a cheap Hyper X Pulsefire Core, obviously using Hyper X NGENUITY. Today I installed Pop! Os and everything feels good, but aiming at CS2 now is awful. My mouse drivers doesnt support linux, and I already tried Piper but it didnt recognized my device, so I couldnt change the DPI there either. Pop! only let me choose the mouse pointer velocity, and I dont know what I have to do to use it correctly. I was not using pointer acceleration on Windows, and I am not using it here too. How do you guys manage DPI and sensitivity overall? Should I go with the mouse velocity at 50? Was it supposed to be the "default"? Feels very strange on game

TruckersMP not working in Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Jan 2026 - 1:26am

Hello everyone!

First off: I’m happy to make my (almost) switch to Linux (currently distro hopping, but caught my favorite one) and always got everything ready to set it up the way I want it to. My only problem is with TruckersMP. I can’t get it to work at all. Like I can install it using Proton Tricks and get it able to find the Euro Truck Simulator 2 path. But as soon as I launch it, I get the error 102, asking me if my path to the game is still valid/available. And since then I couldn’t really find a fix for it so far. Launching Euro Truck Simulator 2 itself though works just fine.

What I have tried so far:

- Installing it on the same prefix as Euro Truck Simulator 2

- Running it on different proton versions (including GE)

- Reinstalled it amounts of times as well as Euro Truck Simulator 2

- Replaced the files within from an original windows installation

- Launching it with sudo/giving it full access

- Trying this on different distros (CachyOS, EndeavourOS and Fedora Linux), giving the same error.

And yet, I can’t get it to work, so I’m asking if anyone got it working as did months ago.

I was following this guide on the TruckersMP Forum website: https://forum.truckersmp.com/index.php?/topic/115291-install-truckersmp-launcher-on-linux/

I would be very grateful for any kind of solutions.

Steam games won't launch

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Jan 2026 - 12:55am

I just installed steam and the steam launcher is working fine. It's when I try to play a game when it goes awry. It goes from "launching" to "play" and it won't even launch the game. I also tried to use it on a platinum game just in case it was a proton problem but it was a no-go either, it didn't produce a crash log. I tried playing games on Heroic and it works just fine there. I have enabled Proton and added Proton launch options but it still won't work. Any tips?

Is COSMIC a good alternative to KDE for gaming? Does it have all the goodies like VRR and HDR?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Jan 2026 - 12:21am

I'm getting into linux gaming but I've always really struggled with KDE and don't personally love it. I'm sorry, I know a lot of people who like it, I don't want to trigger anyone. I loved Gnome 3 back in the day, and Cinnamon has carried the torch pretty well. Gaming, and wayland, seem to have left it somewhat behind. I've been trying to get used to KDE but I can tell that I still don't like it.

  • There is no good unified design language between app and even system applets, and what design language there is, I don't really like, even with some intense themeing.
  • There are too many built in KDE apps that all seem to break a lot and also have the above design issue. I haven't used a single built-in KDE app I actually like. And they all have stupid knames.

I'm trying Cosmic and it seems like an excellent answer. Rebuilt in Rust (whatever) against the modern wayland environment (big deal), it really seems to have a good design language, and a lot of UI is just lifted from Gnome which I am happy with.

My question is: Are there any feature dead-ends or foot-guns, especially when it comes to gaming, that I should be aware of with COSMIC? Do VRR and HDR and all those other seemingly very elusive features work properly under COSMIC? I don't see a VRR or HDR toggle in the options so I'm just hoping its working. I've tried to figure this out by googling but development seems so active I can't tell what is really accurate or just-around-the-corner dev wise. Should I just be using GNOME? Does that support the gaming display features?

Context: I have recently taken the plunge on my gaming computer now that the Nvidia drivers seem okayish, and I've been getting the lay of the land. Nobara is clearly an awesome distro aside from some major footguns like not using dnf update.

Mint - Games Crashing For Odd Reasons

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27 Jan 2026 - 10:45pm

Apologies if I don't sound too knowledgeable on terminology, I'm fairly new to Linux.

Hey! I was playing Hundred Line Last Defence Academy at the start of the month and about 11 hours in the game started crashing. I spent some time trying to fix the problem and did the following:

- Changed GPU Driver

- Updated everything I could in Update Manager

- Changed Proton versions: 4.0, 9.0, Experimental.

- Reinstalled the game and moved its location (I have two save places for Steam)

I was also running btop++ on top for a bit (which allowed me to change tab and force exit the game) but nothing out of the ordinary happened. I also ran proton logs but similarly nothing (according to my friend who does know Linux better than me, who was equally confused).

Through these steps I managed to solve the original crashing issue of it stopping, playing audio only and being unable to tab out of the game or open a terminal. It now dropped to a softer crash where I could close the game.

That is to say, the game would completely stop, but I could now tab out and force closure.

At which point I realised this was also affecting other games: for instance, Project Diva: Hatsune Miku and P5X.

Since the crash frequency dropped I stopped working on it for a bit, but I've noticed some oddities since:

- Sometimes the games lag in a "stutter" every now and again.

-- From looking at btop++ the stuttering is paired with GPU usage dipping to ~25%

- If I turn on my headphones or connect to bluetooth whilst playing a game it immediately crashes.

- Trying to screenshare a game on discord instantly crashes it.

- For some reason it happens less if I have btop++ pinned on top of the game

At this point I reinstalled discord and turned off hardware acceleration and it didn't amend the problem. Instead, there was a few minute delay before crashing rather than an instant crash.

My system info is below, if more is required please ask, I've been thumping my head against a table trying to fix this:
