Wayland input latency?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 11:28

Hi, as I'm switching to an AMD system soon, I wanted to give wayland another try.

But last time I read about it, it seemed like it still had inferior input latency as compared to X11, by forcing Vsync or something like that. Is that still the case today?

I also read about some force tearing thing which supposedly helps, but for that you need KDE - does that completely eliminate the difference to X11? And is it availble on other DEs as well?

Thx!

Abysmal CPU performance in games after BIOS update (B450M Pro4 R2.0)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 11:27

I updated the bios on said board (paired with Ryzen 3500X, 16gb 3600MHz RAM kit, RX 5700 and NVME drive for Linux) to the latest version because of some issues with L3 cache speeds on older one as well as some security fixes. It runs EOS with 6.10.7 kernel. It's the 10.31 beta (which is fresh, came out less than a week ago) but 10.20 stable behaves the same way. Both use AGESA 1.2.0.C as opposed to 1.2.0.7 I previously had.

Tested it all on a W11 installation from a separate SATA SSD and it's all good, however it completely wrecked my gaming performance in Linux. CPU usage goes through the roof way before it can even get close to the FPS output it's capable of (Cyberpunk went from 70~80 to 40 tops, most locations in ZZZ are straight up <30fps). Interestingly, the same games run perfectly on Windows (better than they used to as well). I double checked the BIOS settings related to CPU and RAM, they're all good, even enabled PBO but that didn't do much. Could the update break the way the kernel talks to the CPU or something? Would've made more sense to me if it was just as bad on W11 but it isn't.

Elden Ring freezes with 560 NVidia drivers

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 11:09

Hi everyone, I wanted to share an issue which has recently appeared to me while playing Elden Ring. I switched to EndeavourOS a few months ago and I was able to continue with my Elden Ring save without issues.

I did the whole NG+ run and I'm now mid-way through the DLC. However, ever since I upgraded to the 560 NVidia drivers, the game freezes. Sometimes it happens as soon as the loading screen comes up, sometimes a few seconds after loading the save game, sometimes a few minutes into the session... But the game just freezes, the background music still plays, and my OS is fine. I am suspicious of the vulkan textures being responsible, but so far I haven't been able to pin down the problem other than reverting to the 555 drivers.

So first, of all, system information inxi -xxACGS(Currently reverted back to 555 using this tool):

Second, my steam output. I was able to get logs from both an issue-free session with 555 drivers and one that froze with 560:

Steam output with 555 drivers

Steam output with 560 drivers

I took a look myself and I didn't see anything suspicious, but who knows... Alright, then after opening the game in Proton Experimental with the following launch options: PROTON_LOG=1 mangohud %command%:

Proton logs

The logs are VERY long and again I wasn't able to spot anything suspicious by comparing both, I hope you'll be able to spot something.

Things that I've tried
  • Re-downloading the shaders cache to force compilation under 560 drivers.
  • Disabling shader pre-caching.
  • Installing nouveau drivers. I followed The wiki on how to install new ones and removing everything nvidia-related, but my PC wouldn't recognize them.
  • Recreating the proton prefix.
  • Opening the game via heroic-launcher. I was able to open it with Proton-GE-Proton9-11 via heroic but the problem persisted.
  • Disabling mangohud.
  • Launching with proton 9.0-2.
  • Searching protonDB I found this, I used it but the problem persisted.
  • Disabling steam overlay.
  • Deleting steam overlay data.
  • Followed this post with similar issues. Nothing.
  • Followed this post with similar issues. The solution proposed coincides with the one in protonDB. Nothing.
  • Searched in steam and nvidia forums. Couldn't find anything relevant.

In any case, I would like to at least be able to know what's going wrong here and raise this issue to the relevant party (nvidia, vulkan, whatever...) because I'm afraid this problem could be affecting more games that I don't (yet) know of. Also, I wouldn't like being stuck with 555 drivers forever...

How to mod Star Traders: Frontier?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 09:47

First game I ever tried to install on Linux. (My laptop is really old) but it's working okay. I downloaded a mod for the game and it gave me a folder with a png, a manifest.json and a database.sql file. Where am I supposed to put those for a linux native game? I have looked all over / and home for anything star traders related and found nothing. There is no mod folder or anything obvious even though there are mods preinstalled in the game.

https://www.nexusmods.com/startradersfrontiers/mods/3?tab=files

Oh, and by linux native game I mean it came packaged as a .run file I had to make executable and ./ to install.

It's not using wine or anything. Linux Mint 22.

Anyone have any clues?

BC-250 Gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 09:06

Running some benchmarks/graphics tests on the bc-250 It was set to 1080p extreme and the GPU was underclocked, with proper tuning it should perform a bit below an Rx 6600

I've also been running some actual games, I've been having issues running steam on it but lutris works. I was using nobara but I'm switching to bazzite

Heroes 5 on Fedora?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 08:38

Hi. Is it possible via wine or anything like that. (I just haven’t tried yet - and because of that tag is “advice wanted”), and also yes it’s a really old game, just wanted to make sure.

Problem with FS2020 installer

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 04:26
Hello.

I am having problems with the MSFS2020 installer when running through Proton.

I already have the game content installed on one of my removable disks, but I can't select the directory media/user/T7.

Question - how do I map the directory to this path so I can select the game folder in the installer?

Those disks on the screenshot (D, E) are just empty.

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04 and Proton experimental.

Frame Gen (The Post Processing Kind)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 04:01

I've got multiple PCs in house, one Fedora, one Ubuntu, one Arch, an ugly frankenstein MacOS, and three with Windows LTSC

Some are dedicated for work, others for gaming (but never both)

Lossless Scaling has made gaming on Windows much more comfortable on the eyes, and although Frame Gen isn't fantastic everywhere, I play mostly "dad games" such as Battletech and Command and Conquer

Frame Gen, especially on much much much older devices, has blown my mind, suddenly playing a game where the GPU can only reach 30fps isn't an issue anymore

In terms of the application itself, I am not interested in scaling, only the Frame Gen aspect of it

Now I already know the answer (the answer is NO at the moment), but what I'm looking for is direction

Meaning, if and when a linux version of framegen come out, where am I to direct my attention and wait attentively? Do I stare towards DXVK, or Wine, or gamescope? Anyone in those areas considering or working-on or even just folding their arms and nodding "Yeah, it looks like a neat trick"

having trouble installing Bomber girl

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 03:44

Throwing a shot in the dark here cause the game is really niche. But I'm trying to install Bomber girl, a japanese only spin-off of Bomberman. I played it with a friend on windows awhile ago and wanted to try installing it on linux. But I'm having trouble, the game installs using a .msi installer for reference. I can get it to open in wine but I can't get the installation to finish without errors. the only way I could tell it was an error was when I tried it with bottles which has support for japanese fonts and google translate. I've tested the installer in regular wine, lutris, bottles, and wineGE. I've tried in both Kubuntu and fedora. I know wine has .msi support but I think this might be out of the ball park. Any help is greatly appreciated.

in the event anyone wants to try themselves.

Here's the english installation guide

Specs

OS: fedora 40 budgie kernel 6.10.6

As of August 31st, is there any way to get the full SteamOS experience with an Nvidia card?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 02:57

My Pc is connected to my tv, I'm looking for a console like experience and SteamOS seems to be the choice. From what I''ve read, you need AMD to get the full SteamOS experience. Has that changed at all?

Is playing hot potato with my boot drive bad?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 02:44

I have a 500 gig NVME drive and a 100 gig SSD drive.

Want to set up the 100 gig one with linux for gaming and windows on the other one for school.

I might switch two/three times a day between the OS.

Is it bad if I boot from two OS's through out the day?

Do I also have to redo all my bios settings everytime I want to boot from a different drive?

What to do when the latest drivers of your GPU don't support your monitor resolution?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 02:43

I've got a Radeon HD 5670 in my Fedora 40 OS.

The latest AMD drivers for this motherboard are from 2015 and the problem with those is that the max resolution is 1920 x 1080 but my monitor is an ultra-wide one 2560x1440.

Is there any hope/tricks that I could use the right resolution for my monitor?

What icons should I use

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 01:11

I want clean, non flat, background less icons that look polished. Closest I’ve come is a Win XP icon pack that had too many bells and whistles. I’m on plasma 6.

$150 laptop that can run Minecraft Java w/mods?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 00:41

Looking to get my son a very cheap laptop that is LinuxMint friendly and can run Minecraft Java with a reasonable set of mods (I know shaders, etc. might me too taxing).

Right now he's used to the performance of my old desktop i5-6600k w/ GTX970.

Any opinions on minimum specs I should look for / are possible in the sub-$150 price range? (Bonus pts for links to active deals).

Thanks!
