[Proton] There is no pfx file in my game folder

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 18:54

Hey all, I got a Steam Deck recently and am new to all this Proton stuff. I wanted to delete my save files for a game called Kingdom: New Lands so I did some research and found out where it's stored, except there is no /pfx/ folder in my game file inside /compatdata/ ! For clarity I am in ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/496300 (496300 is the game id) but there is nothing inside. Game launches and plays perfectly fine and I have verified the game files. I am lost as to what to do!

Edit: Whoops I meant pfx folder in the title but I can't edit it.

Bottles: Unable to launch game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 17:41

Trying to play DSIII using Bottles. Following are the logs I get in the Bottles terminal. Any ideas on fixing this? The game launches for a few seconds and I get a white screen before closing. I am using wine-ge-proton8-26 runner, getting same issue with sys-wine-9.0. Let me know if you need any further information.

I finally moved to wayland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 17:31

Today I discover that VRR in x11 stopped working, so I decided that it was time to try to move to Wayland. Everything pretty much works but I lost GWE and don't know how to replace it. But it's not a huge deal. What I miss though is that sensors no longer shows me GPU temp and fan speed. MangoHUD and nvidia-smi show me the temp but not psensors.

What do you guy use to monitor GPU temp and fan in Wayland outside games?

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04, NVIDIA Driver Version: 560.35.03.

Forced steam play question

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 17:10

Hello, I didn't manage to find a clear answer on this. When I enable proton to be used on unsupported titles on Steam, will Linux-native games still be installed by default for titles that have it?

I enabled that option to play a specific unsupported game with GE-Proton. Will games like CS2 and Factorio be installed in the future as Windows-native or Linux-native?

Need help setting up Bottles.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 17:08

Hey folks hope everything's going well.

I am facing an issue while setting up a bottle. The goal is to run DSIII using Bottles. I get a "Failed to create placeholder directory/file." message after hitting the create button. I have installed flatseal and have given access to ~/bottles directory. The bottle directory is set to ~/bottles/SoulsIII. Any idea what's going wrong here? Please let me know if you need any further information about this.

Thanks for reading, have a nice day!

Can we please get a stickied "Is Nvidia good now?" thread?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 16:46

At this point, we're seeing the same question multiple times per day. A basic stickied thread explaining the current state of Nvidia on Linux would be really helpful. It could include a brief explanation of the few remaining issues and a list of the many things that work well.

Multi Monitor VRR on Nvidia?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 15:26

I'd been trying to figure out why games didn't seem as smooth on my system as they did on Windows, even though I had the same refresh rate. I came across some posts and comments from about 5-6 months ago that mentioned VRR wouldn't function if I had more than one monitor connected. Sure enough, when I turned on my monitor's refresh rate counter from the OSD, it remained at a constant 180 Hz if my second display was connected. VRR only engaged when the second monitor was turned off.

I’m assuming this isn't a DE issue, I'm using GNOME 46.5 and the 560.35.03 drivers.

Am I correct in assuming there's no workaround to get VRR working with two or more monitors? Is my only recourse to turn off my second monitor whenever I wish to play games?

dgVoodoo isn't working with recent Proton updates

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 13:54

Running Steam Flatpak on Batocera (I wanted to keep all my games library centralized in one place). I have some game (SimCity 4) that requires a DirectX wrapper in order to not lag.

Before using Batocera, I ran my games using Debian and the standard .deb installer for Steam. I used Protontricks to open winecfg and set the DLL overrides for dgVoodoo to work for the game executable. Then I configured dgVoodoo for the game's directory, put there the .dlls and it worked. Even having a rather high overhead (DirectX 7/8 to DirectX 11 (dgVoodoo) to Vulkan(DXVK)) the game had a very stable 60fps framerate and scrolling was very smooth.

However, I don't know if it's a limitation of Steam Flatpak, or maybe some recent upgrade in Proton, but I can't use dgVoodoo any longer. The game crashes at startup, or loads without the wrapper DLLs. This results in laggy scroll and constant framedrops.

I know that the current DXVK version translates directly d3d8.dll to Vulkan, but this isn't enough for my game: it still lags, although less than on Windows without tweaks.

Anyone has clue on this?

My specs (I'm running on laptop): * CPU: Intel Core i7-7500U * iGPU: Intel HD Graphics 620 (the laptop has a Nvidia 3D controller but it's kinda shitty and doesn't even support current Vulkan) * RAM: 16 GB DDR4 (2x8GB) @ 2133 MHz * OS: Batocera 40/Debian 12

Mini pc, mini itx apu builld, or my steam deck for a sunshine/moonlight set up?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 13:17

I miss gaming on my steam machine, but I had to sell it after we moved in to a 1 bedroom apartment. Looking to replace it with sunshine/monnlight game streaming set up but unsure how to go about it.

Will a mini pc with something like an n100 be enough? Or should build a mini itx system with an apu instead? Cheapest option would be to use my steam deck I already own in a dock but i hear the docking experience isn’t so great on the deck. What are your thoughts?

The quest for Oculus Rift games on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21. Oktober 2024 - 12:51

TL;DR: we're a long ways from getting Rift games running, but there's some light at the end of the tunnel

So from my previous post, I’ve described how I’ve managed to satisfy about 95% of my VR needs on Linux.

Now about that leftover 5%

Most of my VR games are thankfully on Steam, however I have a few exclusive games on the Oculus launcher that I got years back that I quite enjoy. Now I could cut my losses and move on from these games, or just swallow my pride and boot into Windows for these games like a normal person.

I am not normal.

I have spent the better part of 3 years trying to get the Oculus Launcher and any of its games to function on Linux. It’s a path of roadblocks and frustrations, but my sheer tenacity towards this goal has been driving me for a while, and I've even managed to make a little progress towards it recently

Before I get into that, let me lay out the issues at hand blocking these games from running

  1. The Oculus software does not work under Wine or Proton, if you try, the installer fails because it falsely thinks there's not enough space
    • in the bug thread above, there's a patch you can apply to wine to bypass this error and let the installer proceed, but you'll immediately run into another issue, which is after downloading the needed files, it fails to actually install any of it and just tells you to restart your PC (related bug)
  2. Revive works... kinda. If you run it as a non-steam game with Proton, you can actually get it to appear on the SteamVR dashboard, but it doesn't seem to be able to inject games, at least on its own
  3. Entitlement Checks (Less formally, DRM). Games like Lone Echo will inject properly with the trick above, but fail to launch as the launcher is not there to verify the game's license. Until the Oculus launcher is functional on wine, these games will remain out of our reach (no, I couldn't even get the cracked version to run, it also failed the check oddly enough, plus finding cracks for Rift games is a complete PITA)

Right now where I stand, I just recently got the oculus touch tutorial and First Contact running with the method up above. It's not a lot, but I like to celebrate the baby steps. My next goal for now is EchoVR since there are patches for commuinty servers and license check bypasses, but for now it errors out for no obvious reasons (I have a proton log of it on hand, but it's too big for pastebin). My hunch right now is it having to do with EchoVR being a D3D12 game (D3D12 VR games were apparently problematic on proton until relatively recently). So I'll wanna apply the needed patches to the latest bleeding edge to retest sometime (only thing is I'm having trouble patching it so...)

It's quite the rabbithole
