Current state of sunshine/apollo on linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 22:17

I’ve been considering switching my OS over to either CachyOS or Bazzite, but my only concern is losing features that I’ve already grown accustomed to.

Currently I play everything at 4k60/120 in HDR, streamed to the Moonlight app on Xbox Series X and iPhone 15 Pro. Everything as it is works pretty well and is fairly seemless, but over the past year or two windows has sent out botched updates that complete break on my system.

I’ve heard that HDR has issues working, or maybe just doesn’t work as good in Linux? That would definitely be a huge bummer to me if that feature is no longer practical

Also my PC is essentially just a game streaming server that I occasionally use to remote into work, so all I’d really have on there is just steam, Apollo/sunshine and (maybe) my Remote Desktop software (if it isn’t compatible I have another PC I can use) so one thing I’m also slightly worried about is the reliability of this system in regards to updates; not that windows has been particularly reliable to me, but I wouldn’t want to jump right back in to having the same issues as before either.

To those who care, these are the specs

RTX 4080 Super (566.36 because recent updates causing really bad crashing)

Ryzen 9 9900X

64GB 6000mt/s CL30

1TB M.2 Gen 3 for OS (Windows 11)

2TB M.2 Gen 5 for games

Warframe: Severe stuttering tied to mouse movement after some playtime on fresh CachyOS install

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 21:26

'm playing Warframe, and after a certain amount of playtime (everything runs super smooth initially), the game starts stuttering extremely heavily, but only when I move the mouse. As soon as I stop moving the mouse, the framerate goes back to normal. This makes playing with the mouse practically impossible.

Interestingly: If I switch to my gamepad, the game runs completely smoothly again – as long as I'm using normal gameplay inputs (moving, aiming with the stick, shooting, etc.). However, if I use the gamepad stick to move the mouse cursor in menus or other places where a cursor appears, the stuttering also returns for as long as the cursor is moving.

This issue was not present on the CachyOS installation I had before reinstalling yesterday.

What I've tried so far:

  • Launching the game both with and without Gamescope.
  • Switching the Proton layer from proton-cachyosto GE-Proton9-27

Unfortunately, neither of these changed anything. The issue occurs in both configurations.

My System Information :

  • Kernel: 6.14.1-2-cachyos
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090
  • Desktop Environment : KDE Plasma

I installed Cachy

I'm stumped and would appreciate any tips!

Thanks in advance!

Better to go with AMD CPU Ryzen 9 or Intel for laptop? NVIDIA over AMD GPU?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 20:40

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop to support both Linux gaming and software development. I'm trying to stay within a budget of under $1800 but still have some longevity. I tend to play more retro games, but it would be nice to have some support for some more modern games (last 5 years like Phoenix Point), but I don't care about bleeding edge.

I'm looking at AMD Ryzen 9 CPU's, and I'm looking for opinions if that's a better way to go over Intel based on people's experience. Also is it better to go with an NVIDIA GPU over AMD graphics? I keep hearing that AMD is no longer supporting the laptop market with their latest GPU chips anymore. If NVIDIA is the way to go, is the 4070 the bare minimum? I've heard some issues with the 4060 in Linux on some posts.

Any other thoughts ore recommendations? Any brand of laptops that are solid in Linux even though they come with Windows?

FYI - I'm currently using Fedora.

Cooperation with Linux game streamers

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 20:14

Hi, I'm looking for streamers or bloggers who might be interested in trying out our game Ecliptica first, before we release it anywhere. If anyone is interested, you can write to me, or read the description of the game itself.

Now I'm looking for people willing to play, we'll prepare the build itself a little later, in a few weeks.

Of course, if somebody want to play it.

Ideal setup for VR on Linux mint?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 19:25

Heyo guys, I've recently switched too Linux mint a couple of weeks ago and I've been having a blast of an experience with almost no issues that I couldn't figure out but the one thing I can't really get right is VR. I have a quest 3 and I'd like to use a link cable instead of streaming it over the Internet simply due to the face I have god awful internet speeds. I've tried using ALVR with my quest 3 but I can't seem to get it to even recognize that my headset is connected. I click on the notification in my headset too allow it too view the storage on my pc and the issue itself seems to be Linux itself doesn't recognize my headset at all. What's your guy's suggestions?

Tutorials for undervolting CPU/GPU on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 18:52

Hey!

I'm new to PC gaming and I'll be using Nobara 41 as my distro. I'll mainly be gaming and I was wondering if anyone here had tutorials or experience with undervolting their CPU and GPU on Linux. It looks like MSI Afterburner isn't Linux compatible so a lot of the videos on YouTube aren't applicable.

I have a Ryzen 9800X3D and an ASUS Radeon 7900XTX Dual OC. Also, I don't come from a CS background. If you have any links, videos, or words of advice I'd be very appreciative. Thank you!! :)

some of my steam games fail to receive my letter keyboard key inputs

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 18:14

they have no problems with ESC, excape, ctrl, shift, tab and numbered keys

but they fail to receive letter key inputs

for example, I can't move with wasd, have to plug my controler to play

The games that I've noticed this problem are Dugeon Alchemist(more like an app on steam), utrakill and balatro(seems like you can reset your run with the R key but I can't)

There might be more but I haven't tested all of my like 200 games, only about 30
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? tnx in advance

system info:
OS: openSUSE Tumbleweed
KERNEL: 6.14.0-1-default
CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 @ 2.80GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
GPU DRIVER: NVIDIA 570.133.07
RAM: 16 GB
Display: X11

edit: when running dungeon alchemist with wine (it itself is native), it runs without any issue.

SteamVR Works on wayland now (Nvidia)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 18:03

I'm pleased to announce that I was able to play VRChat on my Index on Plasma 6's wayland session (with the proprietary nvidia-dkms drivers)! Performance was fine, audio worked, really nothing to complain about. First time successfully doing anything vr-related on wayland.

That's all. Woohoo :)

Forza Horizon 4 memory leaking

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 16:19
Operating System: Manjaro Linux KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.12.0 Qt Version: 6.8.2 Kernel Version: 6.12.20-2-MANJARO (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 16 × Intel® Core™ i9-9900KF CPU @ 3.60GHz Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Product Name: Z390 AORUS ELITE LD_PRELOAD="" gamemoderun mangohud %command%

The game is installed on a separate SSD from Steam, and Steam is not installed as a Flatpak

Just started playing today and noticed that as I play the memory usage slowly creeps up at a somewhat steady rate (0.1 gigs every ~20 seconds); the first time I noticed the issue was when the game started lagging horribly, which prompted me to look at MangoHud and see 27 gigs of usage, so I figured the lag was caused by reading the swap - aside from that the game runs buttery smooth

I've tried Proton 9.0-4, Experimental, Hotfix, and GE9-26 and the issue seems to be present regardless; I did also try two or three other versions of GE that I can't remember, but it's not really important because the game either didn't launch at all or crashed shortly after the splash window appeared anyway

I tried looking for a solution online and found nothing Linux-specific, though I did find that deleting TargetHardwareProfiler.dll might help, but apparently it only solves the game memory leaking on the login screen (which it wasn't doing for me anyway); I did also find (somewhere) that adding PROTON_USE_WINED3 could fix it but the game would not launch

I'm still a bit of a newbie to gaming on Linux so I am completely out of ideas

Warframe freezes on login with newest nvidia driver

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 08. April 2025 - 16:16

I've encountered a strange issue with a setup I previously used to run warframe flawlessly with proton. After updating to the newest nvidia 570 driver and a newer manjaro kernel my warframe now consistently freezes on the login screen as pictured https://imgur.com/a/ZLf3FNW

Steam logs this but I cannot find any issue

Has anyone else encountered this or know any solution? I have tried many different proton versions, warframe with dx11(previously only worked with dx12) clearing shader cache, and clean OS reinstall.

I can provide any other needed info upon request.

EDIT: With gamemoderun %command% I get this error
