valve games don't work when running on Vulkan/have poor performance through OpenGL

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. April 2026 - 00:07

(intel i5-12450HX, RTX 3050 6GB Laptop GPU with proprietary 580.126.18 drivers with DRM kernel mode setting on, my OS is Arch and kernel is 6.19.11 with secure boot off)

(only relevant launch option is -vulkan)

when I try to launch any Linux-native Valve game (portal, half-life 2, L4D2, etc.) while specifically setting the graphics API to Vulkan, it refuses to launch and only warns me that hl2_linux failed to launch. the logs showed an error with DXVK and some failed to load driver: nvidia-drm. afterwards, the crash occurred.

the crash message showed the following error:

systemd-coredump Process 9608 (hl2_linux) of user 1000 dumped core. Stack trace of thread 9608: #0 0x00000000f7ef5579 __kernel_vsyscall (linux-gate.so.1 + 0x579) #1 0x00000000f7cb39bf n/a (/run/host/usr/lib32/libc.so.6 + 0x969bf) ELF object binary architecture: Intel 80386

on the other hand, I tried using OpenGL (which already was the default API) only to receive performance that never got past 30FPS. this happened even when I had even only my dedicated GPU activated.

My brother and I made a ninja retro FPS: Akuma's Bloodrain

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 23:32

Hi! My brother and I developed our first Boomer Shooter (and 9th game), we focused on fast movement and brutal combat! So the enemies will scream when you kill them, and their pieces will be spread all over the arena!

Challenge & Skill

Our game is all about gameplay, challenge, and skill! So we came up with two challenges in which depending on how much you master Akuma's last level, you can actually earn one or two of our other games. Curious if that's a solid extra motivation to pass through the game's challenge, what do you think?

Playing

If you get the chance to play it, we would love to receive some feedback. It's available on Steam already and it even has a free Demo:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3692360/Akumas_Bloodrain/

Feedback

Feedback is really critical now, because although that's our 9th game, it's our first FPS game, and we loved developing it, so we want to stay in that genre. Any feedback that can help us improve Akuma or head us toward an even better next FPS game would be awesome.

Thank you very much for the attention, I hope you all have fun!

I'm giving up on linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 23:24

I want to be clear that I'm not hating on Linux, it's very likely that I don't know what I'm doing and I'm not patient enough but I guess Linux just isn't for me. I'm sorry for the rambling but I just want to vent my frustration.

let me preface by saying that I own a full AMD system:

Ryzen 7 5700x

Rx 6700 xt

and I also own a OLED steam deck

it's my first time posting here after lurking for a while, and while I hate that my first (and probably last) post is about me giving up on Linux, for at least a month ive been using Linux mint since I really only use my PC to play games and browse the internet, I don't do any type of dev work or programming, and sadly, the gaming performance on Linux (at least for me) is fucking atrocious. For example on windows 11 on resident evil 4 remake I get a stable 100 fps across the board whilst on Linux i get half as much and with some insane drops and stutters, and not just on that game, but others like lethal company runs terrible also with massive drops in interiors and a lot of stuttering and micro stuttering, and I just can't seem to find any solution to my predicament no matter what I do: changing graphics settings, performance mode, kernel updates, different versions of proton and ge-proton, fresh Linux installations on different drives. Gaming on the Steam deck oled has been nothing short of great for me with no issues, which also helped me decide to try out using linux on my desktop pc.

given the fact that Linux mint is sold as working out of the box (no GPU drivers installs needed or messing with the terminal), that gaming on Linux with a full AMD system is the equivalent of the second coming of Christ, and after hours of reinstalling games (since my internet is so shit) I've just grown tired and this point and I'm giving up.

I'm not looking for any tech support either, like I said I just wanted to vent my frustration.

Gray Zone Warfare issues after update

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 21:56

Anyone else having anti-cheat issues after hotfix 0.4.0.3 came out yesterday?

Verifying gets me into a game but I’m getting kicked after a random amount of time. I had the read-only fix applied before this and was having no issues.

On Arch with KDE. Updated my system today and also started having various other issues so it might be on my end. (I update 1-2 times a week)

Discord Stream Frames Arriving out of Order when Mouse Hovers

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 21:52
  • Fedora 43 Gnome, AMD 5700 XT
  • The issue started occuring around 3-9 days ago. It worked on F43 before
  • I always keep all packages updated. I update every day.
  • The issue ONLY occurs when the mouse is IN the window that's being streamed. If I hover my mouse over discord everything is fine
  • The issue only occurs with streaming windows, not the entire desktop
  • I have no custom stuff in discord or gnome or something, I have experimental drivers or something. I changes nothing that could have affected this. It just started some day.

Anyone know what could be happening here?

Apart from relying on a "Trusted Source" how do you safe guard your PC against viruses when downloading abandonware?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 21:27

Title says it all. I know there's VirusTotal but that has a file upload limit.

Using software like bwrap or Flatpaks will only limit the threat surface.

In fact, there are many well known Flatpaks which will by default will allow access to your entire home directory along with /mnt which seems entirely pointless.

ClamAV from what I've read has a terrible detection rate.

People will often point out that most viruses only target Windows installations but thanks to Wine we're now emulating a Windows filesystem with Z: effectively allowing access to your entire system including any mounted devices.

The virus doesn't necessarily need to disrupt your work.

It could technically just steal some data without the user being made aware.

How do people normally approach this problem?

Seeing posts here, it seems like switching to a Linux based OS is going to require a lot of "fixes" to get everything running right, rather than just installing the OS, drivers, game and playing.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 18:52

I just want to play a few games on Steam and it seems like there's system permissions you may have to set and bios settings that have to be turned on/off, some stuff has to be done with DOS-type commands. It's fine in a way, I'm just trying to grasp what I'll need to play a Steam game with an Xbox controller with an AM4/RTX40xx setup. I'm looking at Bazzite since it seems to be the UI friendly of the recommended "gaming" linux based OS's.

Please suggest me a decent OS for gaming and programming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 18:26

hey everyone

so I was just researching on the topic Linux gaming and I understood how some stuff (wine and proton) work and also looked up some good Linux distros for gaming

However, I am also a programmer who does stuff related to data (python, sql etc). I was wondering if I ask the community which Linux distribution should I install in my laptop to play games and learn progamming (projects). Also I’ve heard that Linux is good for programming but does it improve performance in terms of video games? I mainly play horror, indie, fps, souls like and rouge likes and only cs in terms of competitive.

here are my laptop specs

CPU- Ryzen 7 5000 series

GPU - 1660 super

it has 16GB ram but I’m maxxing out the slots

help would be appreciated

France Officially Launches Plan to Ditch Windows for Linux in Government Offices.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. April 2026 - 18:21

Great news for the open-source community! The French government has officially initiated a plan to transition its public sector computers from Windows to Linux-based systems. This move aims to reduce reliance on US tech giants, enhance digital sovereignty, and embrace the core principles of open-source

What are your thoughts on this?

This is a huge statement from a major European nation. Do you think we'll see more governments making similar moves towards open-source solutions like Ubuntu or other Linux distributions? What challenges or opportunities do you foresee with such a large-scale transition?''I
