Finding the best 4k Gaming Monitors

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 14 Stunden 23 Minuten

I am looking for a monitor but having difficulty to find the right one. I want to buy a 32" 4K monitor with a 144hz refresh rate. Finding only 60hz refresh rate. Or smaller 27"-28" monitors (LG, Samsung). Asus has the right one but with 360hz refresh rate and I'm not paying over 1K for a monitor. I'm willing to spend some reasonable amount of money for the right one. Any recommendations for me? Thanks

Assistance Needed with Radeon RX 7900 GRE on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 14 Stunden 57 Minuten

Hi there,

I'm new to Linux (about 5 months) and recently upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon RX 7900 GRE. Previously, I used a GeForce GTX 3070 without any issues in Star Citizen or other games.

After installing the new GPU, my desktop environment experience was great; however, I encountered difficulties running Star Citizen, The Witcher, and V Rising (the only ones I've tested). Star Citizen crashes with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET, and I observed journal errors like "[amdgpu] ERROR ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, but soft recovered." The other two games load but seem to have issues with shader rendering. I've tried various troubleshooting steps, including updating to the latest amdgpu drivers and kernel version (6.9.1-arch1-1) on X11. I also experimented with different runners and DXVK configurations, but the problem persisted.

Interestingly, by lowering my GPU clock from the default 2485 MHz to 2300 MHz and my VRAM clock to 1080 MHz, I could achieve stable gameplay in Star Citizen, though the shader issues persist in The Witcher and V Rising. The problem occurs regardless of whether I use Wayland or X11.

For reference, I have installed Star Citizen on Ubuntu with the same crashes and issues. On Windows, the game runs better, though I experienced one crash, not sure if it was graphics-related.

Here are my installed packages:

  • local/amdvlk 2024.Q2.1-1: AMD's standalone Vulkan driver
  • local/lact 0.5.4-2: AMDGPU Controller application
  • local/lib32-vulkan-radeon 1:24.0.7-3: Open-source Vulkan driver for AMD GPUs - 32-bit
  • local/libteam 1.32-1: Library for controlling team network device
  • local/vulkan-radeon 1:24.0.7-3: Open-source Vulkan driver for AMD GPUs
  • local/xf86-video-amdgpu 23.0.0-2 (xorg-drivers): X.org amdgpu video driver
  • local/glu 9.0.3-1: Mesa OpenGL utility library
  • local/lib32-mesa 1:24.0.7-3: Open-source OpenGL drivers - 32-bit
  • local/libva-mesa-driver 1:24.0.7-3: Open-source VA-API drivers
  • local/mesa 1:24.0.7-3: Open-source OpenGL drivers
  • local/mesa-utils 9.0.0-4: Essential Mesa utilities

My system specs according to Neofetch:

  • OS: Arch Linux x86_64
  • Kernel: 6.9.1-arch1-1
  • DE: Plasma 6.0.4
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X (24) @ 3.800GHz
  • GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX/7900M
  • Memory: 5346MiB / 32013MiB
  • WM: KWin

Additionally, I am using a 700-watt power supply and am not sure if this is sufficient for the Radeon RX 7900 GRE.

I'm curious if anyone else has encountered similar issues or has insights into why this might be the case. Maybe I am missing a driver or have the wrong ones installed. Should I consider sending the card back?

Thanks!

Thinking about switching from Windows to Linux but game compatibility got me reluctant

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 17 Stunden 49 Minuten

Due to windows 11 requirements, I’m unable to upgrade to it so I’m looking for a os that will be supported with security features and more. Though lots of my games are for windows and im not sure how I would be able to run them. I’ve seen some other people talk about it switching though the process seems confusing. Any tips or something?

Have mercy on me and help me switch to Linux, please, please !

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 18 Stunden 18 Minuten

I'm coming back from far away. Former console player, I decided to switch to PC, now I want to switch to Linux.

I can't take the Windows shit anymore.

I want to switch to Linux, but the problem is that it looks so complicated.

I have a project, I plan to play solo games on a totally offline machine with Linux installed on it (I'm going to build a new PC soon).

Can you tell me exactly what I need to install for these games? I only use the GOG offline installer (with USB key).

  • TES IV Oblivion
  • TES V Skyrim
  • Fallout 3
  • Fallout New Vegas
  • Fallout 4
  • STALKER SoC
  • The Witcher 3
  • Cyberpunk 2077

I only intend to use these games for about 3 or 5 years. I plan to use AMD and Ryzen because apparently Linux prefers that.

I also plan to use an Xbox controller to play most of these games.

What should I install? Wine? Which distribution to use?

Error: couldn’t switch to requested monitor resolution

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 21 Stunden 19 Minuten

Hello, I have a problem launching games through Steam, Bottles and Heroic Launcher. If you run the game directly from the folder and close it, then all games start normally until the next reboot. Apparently this problem only occurs in flatpak, since RPM does not have this problem. It seems like the problem only occurs with Vulkan games.

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU Driver: 550.78 OS: Fedora 40 KDE (Wayland)

I also wrote about this on the NVIDIA Forum: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/error-couldn-t-switch-to-requested-monitor-resolution/291376

Geometry Dash not working on Debian 12

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 21 Stunden 42 Minuten

When I try to run Geometry Dash (version 2.204) from Steam it just doesn't work. It tells me that the game is running but nothing happens, then it just closes.

I'm currently using Debian 12 64-bit with Gnome 43.9 on Wayland.

This is what I get when I try running the game ftom the terminal.

Sorry if my english is a bit weird

has anyone used Windows in a VM successfully to install Wabbajack mod lists to their Linux bare metal install?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 23 Stunden 49 Sekunden

Title. I was planning on using this guide specifically but tweaking it for my needs. I could move things from my 2TB drive to my 4TB drive to have Windows on bare metal for this, but I really don't want to unless I absolutely have to. I was wondering about people's success on a PC and not a Steam Deck. Thanks.

Terrible gaming performance after notebook has gone to sleep at least once. Need to reboot so it goes back to normal.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 23 Stunden 17 Minuten

Anyone has any idea on how can I fix this?

Right now I'm on Ubuntu 24.04, but before that I've been on fedora since 37 (so I've gone through 38,39 and 40)

So different mesa versions, different kernels, and this was an issue on all of them.

I'm only looking for a fix now because I just now realized that this was caused bc of sleep. I just thought that the hardware was not well optimized in linux so the performance was worse.

It's A Ryzen 7 5700u: https://www.notebookcheck.info/AMD-Lucienne-Zen-2-Ryzen-5000-R7-5700U-Notebook-Processor.554194.0.html

I got F13+ to work on Nobara

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Mai 2024 - 22:45

Like many of you, i'm just starting my journey on attempting the transition to Linux Gaming. Steam really has made it insanely easy. My biggest struggle recently was just getting F13+ keys to function, and maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan aparently they are a weird concept for long time Linux users. I attempted to paste over the keys in the inet file as commonly recommended as a solution, but no luck. I finally found the answer hidden in a forgotten post by a champion of the deleted.

I really don't know what i'm doing just yet, so forgive me if this is common knowledge to many of you, but my god google has not been very helpfull, and it has been the most frustrating problem. If i understand correctly this primarily became an issue/change when Wayland was release, and X11 no longer used? No idea what those are, but this may be the solution for multiple Fedora/wayland distros. By all means, feel free to explain these like i'm 5.

Keep in mind, i still had to figure out how to map the keys to my Logitech gear via Piper, the guide i followed for that is here. The hard to find fix i'm discussing, is essentially extending the computers understanding of what to do with these inputs. You still need to use piper or some other program to get a key to provide the input.

Copy paste of the heros instructions below, and you're out there, bless you.

I finally figured it out, and got some solutions too. I’ll try to explain first and then tell you what you can do, although you can skip the explanation.

The problem

Basically there are 4 main parts in the Linux input stack relevant in this discussion:

1. At the very low level, the kernel gives keycodes to the keyboard keys and mouse buttons. Defined in /usr/include/linux/input-event-codes.h:

#define KEY_F13183

2. At a higher level, XKB then assigns names to those keycodes (/usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev) …and proceeds to assign them X11 symbols (/usr/include/X11/keysymdef.h) …in file /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet:

key <FK13> { [ XF86Tools ] };

3. Your desktop environment (GNOME in this case) assigns global shortcuts to a combination of symbols, common ones configurable via GNOME settings and some hidden in gsettings schemas by GNOME settings daemon.

4. Finally at the top level you got the applications receiving the keysyms that weren’t designated for global shortcuts.

Here I’m using key-mapper for example, and if it resembles the key remapping utility you’re using, likely assigns the kernel keycodes to your mouse buttons (level 1), but XKB is assigning the “wrong” symbols to those keycodes (level 2). In turn GNOME (level 3) already defines an action for some of those keys to perform an action (toggle microphone and trackpad), and maybe some don’t even reach the application (level 4).

The culprit seems to be exactly in file /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet:

key <FK21> { [ XF86TouchpadToggle ] }; key <FK22> { [ XF86TouchpadOn ] }; key <FK23> { [ XF86TouchpadOff ] }; … key <FK20> { [ XF86AudioMicMute ] }; … key <FK13> { [ XF86Tools ] }; key <FK14> { [ XF86Launch5 ] }; key <FK15> { [ XF86Launch6 ] }; key <FK16> { [ XF86Launch7 ] }; key <FK17> { [ XF86Launch8 ] }; key <FK18> { [ XF86Launch9 ] };

Notice how the F19 key is not used though.

We can, of course, assign the keys to their original symbol:

key <FK13> { [ F13 ] };

But to do it in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet is not recommended, as an update to XKB will restore the original definitions. Besides, it’s a pretty important file and if it’s badly configured you could crash your session and prevent you from login. I tried it and it even kept crashing my login manager (gdm), ttys (Ctrl+Alt+Fk) wouldn’t work too, so I had to chroot in a live usb and restore the original file.

What we could do instead is to create a custom XKB option. I believe it’s important that it’s an XKB option in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols, because I think setxkbmap adds the “inet(evdev)” layout on top of whatever layout we have, so creating a new XKB layout won‘t help here. An option instead is added on top of every layout, even “inet(evdev)”.

I also tried to do it with XKB user-configurable options in Wayland (via ~/.config/xkb) but it seems the user options are added before the ones located in /usr/share, so “inet(evdev)” ends up setting the symbols of the function keys.

We have to fix this the old fashioned way.

The solution

1. Create a new file under /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ called "myoptions". Paste this in there:

default partial function_keys xkb_symbols "restore_fk" { key<FK13> { [ F13 ] }; key<FK14> { [ F14 ] }; key<FK15> { [ F15 ] }; key<FK16> { [ F16 ] }; key<FK17> { [ F17 ] }; key<FK18> { [ F18 ] }; key<FK19> { [ F19 ] }; key<FK20> { [ F20 ] }; key<FK21> { [ F21 ] }; key<FK22> { [ F22 ] }; key<FK23> { [ F23 ] }; key<FK24> { [ F24 ] }; };

2. Edit the /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev file, find the !option = symbols line and add your symbols filename and option name, like so:

! option = symbols myopts:re_fk = +myoptions(restore_fk)

3. (Optional \*) Edit the rules/evdev.xml (this one is with .xml), find the <optionList> opening tag and paste this immediately below the tag

<group allowMultipleSelection="true"> <configItem> <name>myopts</name> <description>My custom options</description> </configItem> <option> <configItem> <name>myopts:re_fk</name> <description>Restore original keysyms of the function keys from 13 to 24</description> </configItem> </option> </group>

Note:

\* Do this if you want GNOME Tweaks to pick up the config file and display it under “Keyboard & Mouse > Additional Layout Options”. If you don’t you can still set the new option via dconf Editor, edit /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options, then add the option as you did in step 2, so ['myopts:re_fk'].

The old method of defining custom options still has its flaws though. As said above, an update to XKB will undo the changes to evdev and evdev.xml files, so you’ll have to redo step 2 and 3 after some time. You could automatize the process with a script file using sed, or apply a patch file, or something else, but since it’s infrequent that XKB updates I think it’s better to just manually edit it yourself.

Aftermath

After enabling the option GNOME settings correctly identified all F13-F24 keys when trying to assign them to global shortcuts. If not used for global shortcuts, the keys function will depend on the app/game that receives the keystrokes, e. g. I can set all SuperTuxKart keybindings to F13-F24 keys and it works perfectly fine, however the settings menu displays an ? for F16-F24, as it didn’t expect users to actually have a keyboard with function keys beyond F15.
