Mild Vent About New Users
Not sure if this post goes against the rules, but idk where else to put it.
I understand there's been an influx of people switching to linux recently and I'm relatively new myself only having switched about a year ago, but with the amount of repeat questions I've been seeing about simple things like games not launching or performance differences it makes me feel like a lot of these people looked up the most popular/beginner friendly distro and installed it without any further research and it just aggravates me. While I'll admit the amount of research I did before switching was likely more than necessary, I still feel like people should do a little bit before installing

Battlefield 6's anti cheat is a blessing in disguise.
If it was compatible with Linux everyone would overlook just how unbelievably invasive it is of your privacy.
Now you're forced to dual boot and run BF6 on a separate drive away from your main OS.
Thank you EA for shooting yourself in the foot! Can't harvest Linux users's data now
I've been screaming at windows users to dual boot as well, but they won't listen. Their funeral I guess.

Discord closing when minimize
I’m running Discord on Arch Linux with KDE. I noticed that whenever I minimize Discord, it seems to “freeze” or disconnect from voice/video calls. Checking the logs, I see things like:
[RTCConnection] Disconnected [GatewaySocket] Session is no longer valid
I’ve already tried:
Turning off Wi-Fi power management (sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off)
Checking powerprofilesctl list – using balanced, but no effect
No GPU throttling; Discord is running on CPU
It doesn’t seem to be a network issue, because reconnecting is instant and everything works fine when Discord is not minimized. My suspicion is that KDE might be throttling background apps or putting minimized windows into some sort of low-power state, causing Discord sessions to drop.
Has anyone else experienced this on KDE/Linux? Any workaround or config to prevent apps from being throttled/minimized?

How exactly does gaming on Linux work?
So as I'm getting more and more fed up with Windows and trying to find ways to make windows apps work on Linux (hail WinBoat(unrelated to gaming)), I'm still wondering how exactly gaming works on Linux.
I've heard people say that they use X distro for gaming, but then Y distro for everything else. If I were to use Arch for daily use, and Cachy or Pop for gaming, would I then have to relog or reboot my PC, to then startup the other distro for gaming? Is there like a quickswitch? How's it work

Steamtinkerlaunch is not downloading ReShade repos (all dependencies check out)
Hi all-
On Fedora42, I have installed SteamTinkerLaunch via ProtonUp-QT. My game launches via SteamTinkerLaunch successfully, however the standard repos listed in ~/.config/steamtinkerlaunch/downloads/shaders don't actually download.
- The repos show up under steamtinkerlaunch "Shader Repos" and are checked. However under "Game Shaders" I only see AstrayFX as it hasn't downloaded any of the provided repos in the list.
- ReShade itself is selected to Install under Game Menu, and it does download successfully to ~/.config/steamtinkerlaunch/downloads/reshade/5.4.2 as expected.
- Steamtinkerlaunch is selected as the Compatibility Tool for the game. I launch the game and can access it via Steamtinkerlaunch.
- I have all Hard Dependencies installed. Hard Dependencies seem to check out ok when I run which [dependency](see snippet below from Konsole)
- Steam was installed via dnf. ProtonUp-QT was installed via Discover/Flatpak. (But again, steamtinkerlaunch was able to download ReShade without issue.)
- Lastly - if I launch the game and press HOME, I don't see the ReShade menu either. But, the symlinks from the game folder -> the source steamtinkerlaunch/reshade folder appear as expected.

I've scoured the wiki for common troubleshooting issues and feel like I've covered all steps so I'm not sure what I'm missing. Many thanks for any insight. If I can provide any more useful info please let me know.

Dead by daylight from steam crashing upon start-up.
Greetings.
I've ran into an issue trying to run Dead by daylight on my Linux Mint 22.2 .
I tried to first run it OOB and then with different versions of Steam's proton, (Hotfix, Expertmental, 9.0-4 and 8.0-5) as well as looked a bit through the internet. I got nothing, so I'm going here.
EAC shows up and gives me the "Initializing..." on the bottom right. Then it disappears and the game just doesn't run, on 8.0-5 a black screen poped up but that was it, on 9.0-4 I got a unity crash report form with nothing that could lead me to what had caused it. ("You do not have any debugging symbols" message)
Does anyone have ANY idea what might be the cause and how to make it work?

Borderlands GOTY (NOT ENHANCED) stuck at 60 fps.
So i just downloaded Borderlands GOTY (Again the original not the enhanced) On linux Mint Cinnamon 22.2 on steam and the game is locked at 60-62 fps while i dont mind in a way as i play all my games at 60 fps i would like to know why it is locked there is no option to lock it or even v-sync option and the Nvidia panel on linux doesn't allow to lock at games at 60 fps so normally the game should either be running at 180fps by default as that is my monitors refresh rate or at unlimited fps, using steam proton 9.0-4 ?

Installed throught lutris, game needs ms visuall c++
i installed a repacked game, i need to see if it works on linux before purchase, but it needs an ms visual c++ redistributable, tried installing in on the game through winetricks but it does nothing. What now?
edit: I found a c++ visual in winetricks of the game. Then it told me my system didnt support dx12 and to try and run it without the -dx12 command. Then it told me that it needed dx12. So after 30 minutes, i found to go into wine configuration and found the game was running in win xp version of win. so i selected win 10 and now it works magically. Hope this will help anyone.

Plarium Launcher and Mech Arena issue
Hi, so I've been playing Mech Arena via linux (Garuda dragonized) for about 3 years now. Linux is not supported but it runs almost perfectly. After a minor update yesterday the game launches, I can move the mouse (and see the cursor) but I can't select anything. So keyboard and L/R mouse buttons are suddenly useless. I thought maybe this was a Wayland issue, but the same thing happens using X11. Any ideas on how to approach this?
