Gaming on linux just changed forever
https://github.com/TibixDev/winboat
this is Winboat. it's another app just like wine or bottles. except it's not. unlike other apps that run .exe files, this app doesn't provide a translation layer. instead, it runs a full modified windows install on your machine, with EVERYTHING automated. you can still access windows if you want, but it's not needed. every app opens normally. and since it uses something called KVM, you can use it for gaming too. KVM technology lets you just straight up use your graphics card as it was actually really plugged in to the windows machine inside your linux install. this means there's no need to even use windows at this point. you just install this app, install steam windows version, and then you install games and play on it like you normally do on a windows computer. the best part? it runs SO good that it feels like native. you can even use a browser inside it and use it like normal. what are your thoughts about this?

AoE2:DE mouse drag feels slower on Linux (Hyprland + Proton-GE)
Hey, wondering if anyone else playing AoE2:DE on Linux (Garuda + Hyprland, Proton-GE 9) feels this — the game runs great, FPS solid, no stutter, but the mouse drag feels heavier than on Windows.
Drag-select boxes move slower or cover less area even with flat accel and raw input (SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11, DXVK_RAW_MOUSE_INPUT=1). Tried Gamescope, GameMode, Hypr sensitivity tweaks… still feels about 10–20 % slower.
Is this just a Proton raw-input scaling thing or something Wayland does with deltas? Anyone managed to get true 1:1 input in RTS games under Hyprland?

Ubisoft Connect crashing
Ive been trying to play the Division but i have been coming across a rather frustrating issue where Ubisoft Connect will just crash upon launch, I've tried launching the division directly without the launcher but it refuses to let me play without the launcher.
Trying to launch the launcher (directly or through launching the division on steam) results in a window popping up saying "Ubisoft Connect has detected an unrecoverable error and must be shut down", I have followed a set of instructions someone left on protondb to install it through Lutris, but trying to run it leads to the exact same error popping up.
I've tried multiple versions of proton, only difference it makes is the error message not popping up and the game still not launching.
If anyone has anything to help, it would be appreciated

Long level loading times in Hitman World of Assassination
This is the only game i have an issue with loading times and it's honestly really weird, it takes up to 2 minutes or more, some levels take longer than others. Loading a save made on the same level loads really quickly compared to initial load
I'm very confused because i would understand why it's so long to load if it was installed on my hard drive but it's on a pretty good SSD and even more confused because it's the only game where it takes that long to load into a level and start playing
I've tried a bunch of different things i found while searching for a solution, including:
- A bunch of different proton version i saw people use on protondb from experimental to older versions and also a bunch of GE-proton(GE proton actually helped fix light source artifacts i was having, or at least i think so, i haven't tested a lot)
- GE-proton 10-10
- GE-proton10-13
- GE-proton10-15
- And down to Proton 8.0-5
- Having -dx11 flag versus the default dx12 but i don't think that does anything, it didn't help
- Having -skip_launcher flag, same thing
- Going on protondb and trying solutions reported there but nothing worked and i've only seen a handful of reports mentioning problems with level load times, including one from 2 years ago stating using proton experimental helped drastically reduce load times which didn't help for me
The game is installed on a separate SSD and library than where steam if installed, it's installed on ext4, steam itself is installed on btrfs so maybe that's why? Some weird hitman only thing?
My launch option is this: MANGOHUD_CONFIG="fps_limit=60,no_display" MANGOHUD=1 %command%
DISTRO: Fedora Linux 42 KDE
KERNEL: 6.16.12-200
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti
GPU DRIVER: 580.95.05
RAM: 32 GB
On WAYLAND
I have no clue what i can do, it's not the worst thing ever because it plays fine after loading but i would be happy if i could find a fix for it, if one exists
Maybe it's just an nvidia driver issue and i'm out of luck, who knows...
I probably forgot about other information on my system or whatever else, let me know if i did and i'll edit it in

I've been at this for more than two hours and it doesn't work. I installed overwatch 2 through steam on windows tried it and thought i'd get a little performance bump on linux, so I installed pop os 22 and updated it and every thing, and then installed steam and all the proton versions in the world ,and it still doesn't work, I press play, it says launching for a few seconds ,then crashes, it doesn't even show a window, and nothing appears on the system monitor. It worked fine on windows, I don't know what's going on, please help

Benchmarking multiple distros for gaming
Hi everyone, I am asking for help in regards to a laborious test I want to do this coming month. I am preparing a computer to benchmark multiple distributions exclusively for gaming. This means that, no matter if the distro focuses on gaming only and not work, I would still test it. The hardware that I will be testing is this:
MOBO: ROG MAXIMUS Z790 DARK HERO
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900K
RAM: DDR5 GSkill 5400 128GB
VID: NVIDIA RTX 5090
Driver: Latest of whatever the distro has available. For example right now is 580.95.05
Monitor: Aorus 4K 144Hz
Resolution Tested: 4K (3840x2160)
Storage: SN850x (8TB)
Common Partitions: 1 Partition with 2GB for UEFI, 1 Parition with 8GB for Swap
Each Distro will use 250GB and the current list is (Which is 2.75TB out of 8TB):
Ubuntu
Kubuntu
Debian
Mint
EndeavourOS
CachyOS
Arch Linux
Garuda Linux
Nobara
Fedora
Bazzite
Lastly there will be a 1TB partition for steam games that gets shared for all distributions for the test. The games to test are:
Cyberpunk
Spiderman Resmastered
Spiderman 2
Hitman World of Assassins
Hogwarts Legacy
Expedition 33
Doom Eternal
The Last of Us Part 2
A Plague Tale: Requiem
The Finals
God of War Ragnarok
Left 4 Dead 2
Stalker 2
Red Dead Redemption 2
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
If any of the games above have some FPS limiter that can affect results, and that can not be removed via the game console or a game parameter, then let me know to not use that specific game, but instead use another one, or even others recommended for the test.
I am writing this to get help with the following:
Any special configuration or optimization for a particular distro that I would need to know about to make sure and avoid that once I do the benchmark recording there is less likely a case that someone says "It had bad performance because X thing was not done". Basically to make sure the best, gaming oriented optimization is done to address most common cases about performance degradation because of something not configured.
Any other advices or suggestions to make sure a particular distribution has the best outlook, for example, should I use Wayland on it or XORG? Should I enable a particular app for gaming, is there any particular grub changes for that distro I am not well aware to enhance the FPS for it, etc..
Are there any other distros missing here that I considered good for gaming. Currently we have used around 3.8TB out of 8TB
Are there any additional games to be used for testing and benchmarking in Steam that I should be including?
Anything else needed to make sure a specific distro outperforms others (basically like cheering through the help you give me for that distro) to make sure that specific distro has better FPS overall. It is a benchmark competition after all. Let me best one win. I will also be documenting what was done for each one in order to see their performance improvement.
Thank you.

Would it be possible to use dolphin file manager instead of the built-in file explorer Proton has?
The built in proton/wine file explorer has several feautures which i find lacking and its really uncomfortable to use.
I'm using MO2 (Mod Organiser 2) and Open Folder Dialogs open Proton's/Wine's file explorer, but would it be possible to instead open Dolphin at that location?
For context i used Furglitch Mod Organiser Linux install script for Skyrim, I'm using KDE and on Arch with Cachy OS Bore Kernel

Question about game launchers.
Is there any way to install games from Epic Games, Ubisoft, EA, ... using each launcher?
I have most my games on Steam, but I also have lots of games on those launchers.
I'm planning to completely switch from Windows to Linux using Omarchy and I want to be able to play all my games. Plus also looking for any programs that I can use with my elgato stream deck, elgato webcam, my hyperx quadcast s microphone, razer keyboard and mouse, ...
Any help is appreciated.

Apparently, Rocket League and Fall Guys are being ported to Fortnite. Both games currently work on Linux, but in the future, they may require playing through Fortnite, and Epic Games stance on Linux gaming is known.

Trouble shooting Nvidia GPU performance in games - what steps are there to make sure things are as they should be?
Forgive me for my ignorance, this is all new to me and so shall follow the posting guide to the best of my ability
Distro: Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS
Kernel: Unknown how to verify
CPU: AMD Fx 8580
GPU: Nvidia GTX 970
GPU Driver: Unknown how to verify. Wasn't active on OS install, had to use the following to get improved results:
sudo nvidia-smi this failed so then we
sudo ubuntu-drivers devices
sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
Restart Machine
sudo nvidia-smi
This showed the following
Result of command `sudo nvidia-smi` upon restart.
Mesa version: Unknown
Wayland/Xorg: Unknown
Gamecope: Unknown
VRR: Unknown
Window Manager/Desktop environment: Unknown
(This post is being composed from a different, windows machine so vulkaninfo / glxinfo / inxi -xxACGS are non functional here)
Lutris: Unknown if on default Pop!_OS install
Steam: Yes, Version, unknown
Heroic: Unknown if on default Pop!_OS install
Bottles: Unknown if on default Pop!_OS install
Wine/Proton: Unknown if on default Pop!_OS install
Were any of those Flatpaks, Snap packages or AppImages rather than packages native to your Linux distribution? Unsure what is being asked. Steam was installed using sudo apt install steam
Log - Proton: Instructions unclear as to how to obtain the desired result. No clue how to 'set the environment variable'
No game was ran from Terminal. Unsure of how to run Steam via terminal, and then...not use the GUI to launch the game?
No code to current share, or terminal outputs.
I'll be glad to gather the required info - if anyone has better direction as what to do/examine. I wrote this post because the initial problem was "Well...Pop!_OS didn't....do anything with...the GPU?"
I'm enjoying Linux - want to become more proficient so I take notes along the way for future me!
Thank you all for your help!
