How many nvidia users are there on linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 17:31

I've been wondering, are there really a lot of nvidia users on linux? The reason?
Recently, ( about 4 with something years ago ) found a distro - Chimera Linux, uses musl libc with mimalloc instead of glibc, freebsd utils instead of util linux, dinit instead of systemd and etc. The problem is that it works faster on my laptop ( and it is not really bad, ryzen 5800u ), than cachy os. But people with nvidia gpus can't enjoy this smoothness and performance, because their gpu drivers depend heavily on glibc.

So, are you an nvidia user?

If yes, then how is your expirience on linux so far?

GPU at 0% util in steam games and a bunch of GLFW errors when playing minecraft

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 17:29

so after finally getting my laptop set up with Mint again after a bunch of troubleshooting I am running into a new problem, when I boot into CS2 I get a reading of 0 fps and my agent on the main menu is missing parts of their model

Part of the CT agent is not rendered. 5fps and 0% GPU on the main menu

I have tried other games and some flat out won't open.

steps taken:

- I have tried switching between NVIDIA on demand mode and NVIDIA Performance modes which randomly fixed it once yesterday and never again.

- I've tried running CS2 in linux native as well as a bunch of other proton layers.

- I have fully updated my system through update manager.

- I have updated and even rolled back my drivers

my suspected issue is Mint seems to be defaulting to my CPU's integrated graphics and I can't get it to not do that, most the time the "run with dedicated GPU" option isn't even available and I'm at a loss as to what to do. I cannot find a way to flat out disable my IGPU to avoid the problem either.

specs:

- HP VICTUS 15
- i5 13450H
- 16GB RAM
- 4050 Mobile

Note: I do not do well with terminal usage. I am willing to try if it's the only way but I'd heavily prefer avoiding it.

Keyboard Recognized as Game Controller, interfering with Game Input

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 17:19

Hello all. My keyboard is recognized as a game controller, which disables input for my xbox controller in game (not in steam big picture mode). I've also only had this issue with Sekiro so far. The only solution I've figured out is deleting /dev/input/event6. This works until next restart. If anyone knows of a more permanant solution, that would be awesome.
I'm launching Sekiro from steam. I've tried using wireless and wired connections, different proton versions, steam input, and native input. I am running Fedora KDE 43, a Keychron V series keyboard, and a xbox series x controller.

Fable 3 (repack)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 17:08

Hello! Wondering if anyone has had any success in running Fable 3? I am using the repack version from RohanKar on twitter.

System is Bazzite, tried both Lutris and Faugus launcher. When running the default wine version (wine-ge-8-26-x86_64 (default) the game runs, but has no dialogue audio, which is a big part of the game.

If I use a different wine version, like GE-Proton, that audio is present but the game can't go longer than 2mins without crashing, very consistently.

Lutris log is constantly spitting out this (but it's gibberish to me):

(wine:51270): GStreamer-WARNING **: 15:57:58.775: Failed to load plugin '/var/home/facity/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton10-28/files/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-1.0/libgsty4mdec.so': /var/home/facity/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton10-28/files/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-1.0/libgsty4mdec.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

Looks like something is missing? but can't quite decipher what exactly it is.

Should I go with vanilla distros or "game optimized" ones

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 16:49

I'm still trying to choose a distro for my new setup (Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RX9070xt), there are so many options and I don't want to pick one that I'll regret later or switching after few weeks. There are game optimized distros like nubara and Gradua, but many people here claim it's limiting, come with so many bloat and you can optimize your vanilla distro in 10 min. I'm a programmer too so I need something that won't limit me later. I'm thinking vanilla fidora kde plazma because so many customization options and up to date drivers. Should I just go with that?

linux handheld purchase advice

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 16:08

Hey everyone, this is my first time posting on Reddit, so sorry if this is a weird format or anything. Anyways, I’m looking to get some sort of handheld console with a max budget of $550, but preferably less than that. I want to get a handheld that runs SteamOS, and I was thinking of getting the OLED Deck, but I kind of want something more powerful. I’m not opposed to buying used. I will also primarily be playing this with a controller in tabletop mode or docked. I’m in a wheelchair, and I’m unable to use it handheld and I basically can only play with a PS5 controller or something similar. $550 is my max budget. I have a PC with a 12600K, 16 GB of DDR4, and an RX 480. I know that’s a huge bottleneck, but I never got around to upgrading my GPU before I left for college, and I didn’t want to bring it with me. I also have a PS5 in my dorm room, and I plan on streaming to the handheld from both my PC and my PS5. I want a handheld, as I want to get back into PC gaming and just gaming in general, and I think a handheld will definitely help me do that. What handheld do you guys think I should get? Battery life isn’t a major concern because I have a 20,000 mAh 65 W power bank that I can use, but I also don’t want the thing to die in like an hour. I mostly play single player bigger budget games and am not super into indies. If my handlend isn't powerful enough I'd just get the game on PS5.

Steam/Proton/Wine not getting local disk size properly

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 15:34

I'm trying to install The Division 2 through Steam but it can't manage to get the proper size of the device. I'm using Debian 13 on /dev/sda and need to install the game at /dev/sdb. At C: the installer shows the proper disk size and available space, but on Z:/mnt/storage it cant figure out the proper available space. How to fix it or gather more information about the real issue?

Victoria 3 linux native build is refusing to run on dgpu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 14:34

Hey, I am on a laptop with an amd igpu and nvidia dgpu, and Victoria 3 insists on running on the igpu regardless of what I do. I've tried prime-run %cmd% and __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia prime-run %cmd% with no luck. Does anyone have any clue how to force the game onto my dgpu?

Cyberpunk High Reported FPS But Stuttering

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 14:12

I have a new Fedora 43 build running Cyberpunk with GE-Proton10-29 that is reporting 120fps but it looks like a slide show whenever I move around.

I have installed Nvidia drivers correctly with akmod-nvidia and am at a loss as to the correct settings etc to get this working.

Here are my machine specs:

CPU: AMD 7950x3D

GPU: Nvidia Rtx 4090

RAM: 64GB DDR5

Anyone have any ideas?

Swapping to Linux mint from windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 14:05

This weekend windows truly made me seriously consider swapping to Linux for gaming. Couldn’t even reset itself without an error and OOBE loop.

My question is has gaming on Linux improved enough to a point where I wouldn’t need to have a windows VM. Or should I consider a windows VM and passing through my GPU?

Specs:

CPU: 9600x

GPU: 7900GRE

32GB DDR5 RAM

1TBx2 SSD

I assume me having a full AMD build would help with the transition to Linux? Games I mostly play are Ubisoft story games (AC, Star Wars and some Crew Motorfest), bit of shooters (I know that Valorant basically won’t work). I do have gamepass as well which I hope will be fine.

Literally any info will be appreciated

Is an anti-cheat compliant kernel possible?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Januar 2026 - 13:30

Excuse my ignorance, but my understanding is a lot of these anti cheats and a few of the games I play require kernel level anticheat. Ethics aside, I don’t see AAA developers really leaning into Linux anytime in the next few years.

As usual, it’s on the Linux community. Theoretically, is it possible to build the required things within kernel to have these games and anti cheats work? Somewhat like proton / wine does, this kernel would have provisions to allow the anticheat to run, even if it’s fibbing some things.

Hopefully this makes sense. If this WAS possible, I’m sure it would have been done.

Side note,

I like using Linux for 99% of things. Unfortunately there are a handful of games I need windows for. And on top of that windows requires an account reset every time I change my boot order or boot from another disc. I’m so done with this OS.
