CS2 and a few other games doing the same download every day

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 1 Stunde 21 Minuten

Every day I start up my PC and open Steam, it just starts downloading a 2.5GB update for CS2 and a few other small ones for other games. This happens every day, not just sometimes and the size is always the same. If I pause it, it will start downloading again sooner or later and stopping will just make it happen again the next day I think. In the screenshot is the download that happens every day on boot.

No audio filter/modulation on Fallout: New Vegas TTW

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 1 Stunde 45 Minuten

Every other piece of audio works fine in the game, with the exception of power armor or intercom filters. It appears to be linux exclusive issue and has no bearing if mods are being used or not. I find it seldom mentioned anywhere online. Are there any known fixes? I know certain mods like istewie or JIP are supposed to fix this but that has yet to work. Thanks.

For research : SteamOS Anticheat Whitelist ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 1 Stunde 59 Minuten

Can anyone on SteamOS but not a Steam Deck test if Delta Force (free) can start?

On Protondb, the anticheat works only on Steam Decks, while on Bazzite or Cachy, it doesn’t pass the launcher, it's supposed to be whitelisted by the developper (but is it the hardware or the OS ?)

That would be the only advantage of SteamOS over any other distro for gaming (if any other devs do that kind of whitelist).

Thx in advance

How's AMD freesync on wayland?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 2 Stunden 33 Minuten

I'm running Cosmic alpha (the latest ubuntu-based system 76 distro). But i also have a Gnome session installed... So i have 2 options for Wayland on my distro: the cosmic compositor or Gnome's mutter.

Sometimes in wayland sessions (both Gnome & Cosmic), when i launch games from steam/proton, both my monitors will turn black. Audio still works and i can hear the game is still responsive, but i have to hard reset. This issue then gets stuck and repeats on every game launch until i log into a X11 session, then its resolved somehow. This issue is never present in my X11 session (but in X11 I suffer annoying screen tearing).

Yesterday i was having the issue a lot, so i tried turning off AMD freesync. To my surprise, that looks like it may have solved it... It has only been 1 day though... So i could have just been gettng lucky, as this issue previously would just randomly happen.

Mu question: Does anybody have wayland issues when using AMD freesync? Any issues with AMD freesync in general that i should be aware of?

AMD rx 9070 xt, running a ubuntu 24.04 based distro. Using the standard drivers and proton experimental.

How do I control where Steam places non-steam games? (Linux Mint)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 3 Stunden 19 Minuten

I've got a fresh install of Linux Mint going on with multiple hard drives. The SSD is too small for me to want to load it up with games so I want Steam to install games on the 6TB HDD instead. I've added that under storage in steam's settings and told it to make that the default choice. But when I go to install battle.net it keeps installing to the SSD.

I've tried to just let that go and then copy it to my other hard drive and update the game properties to point at the new location and Steam won't (or can't?) launch it for me from the new location. I tried running that question through duckduckgo and qwen2.5 LLM and best suggestion I was able to pull out was maybe I needed to chown and chmod the copied folder. I guess you can "chown : " to make it owned by anyone and "chmod 777" to be read/write/execute by anyone, but going nuclear like that Steam still wouldn't run it unless I left it alone on the SSD where it keeps putting the files by default from the battle.net installation.

Anyone have wisdom for me to try next?

What distro to use for a living room PC?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 3 Stunden 37 Minuten

To start, the computer isn't actually built yet and I am just brainstorming ideas. Likely to be a full AMD system.

I have this idea to build a living room gaming PC that I want to function entirely off controller like a console. The thing I'm not entirely sure about is what OS to use. I have been using Manjaro as my first distro (intending to move off when I am confident I can without losing all my data) for a few months now and have become more familiar with Linux as a whole, as well as what distros are available, so I hope this doesn't come off as the usual "What distro should I use???" post.

I have determined the best options would be something built for handhelds like Bazzite or the version CachyOS has. Maybe SteamOS if it gets released by the time I actually build this thing.

If you have built something like this, what did you use? If not, what would you use?

Is there any way to make Steam Overlay work on Flatpak apps?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 4 Stunden 14 Minuten

Hey everyone. So, I've recently been getting more into Flatpaks. To be honest, I love most things about Flatpaks. I love how they're sandboxed and don't spew things all over my computer (for the most part), I love how universal they are in the way that if your distro can use Flatpak, then it can use any Flatpak app (again, for the most part, at least), and I love how you can edit their permissions and have basically total control over what they can and cannot access.

But there's one issue with them that's honestly kind of major for me. As stated in the title, the Steam Overlay does not work with Flatpak apps.

To be clear, I am using the native (non-Flatpak) version of Steam. Steam is basically one of the only apps I use that isn't a Flatpak, because I found that I couldn't add non-Steam games to the Flatpak version of Steam no matter what I did, among a few other reasons.

I've tried searching the internet for solutions to get the overlay to work with Flatpak apps, but I didn't seem to see any concrete answer if it was even possible or not. A lot of "yes"s, "no"s, and "maybe"s.

So, if anyone could shed some light on this, that would be greatly appreciated. I sort of doubt it's possible right now, as if it was possible, I feel like I would have seen a concrete answer, but I'm asking here as a last-ditch effort to see if I can get a solution, or even just information about it.

I run Debian 12, by the way. Though I'm not sure that's super important for this specific issue, as I think I haven't seen the Steam Overlay work for Flatpak apps in ANY distro I've tried (I'm a bit of a chronic distro hopper.)

Requesting a proton build running Wine 10.6

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 4 Stunden 35 Minuten

Hello! In order to properly troubleshoot Rainbow Six Siege in an attempt to achieve any (even single-player) functionality, I need a Proton build supporting CreateFileMapping2, which was implemented for Wine 10.6 five days ago. Any advice or instructions appreciated!

Note: I have already tried utilizing SteamTinkerLaunch. It seems to mess with the Ubisoft Connect installation process, so this is my best shot.

Nouveau Supporting Vulkan?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 4 Stunden 42 Minuten

Ok long story short:

I want to start an old client of world of warcraft (1.12.1) on a laptop with a gtx 555M. I downgraded kernels, tried different drivers since around 20hours just to finally get it done and see that 390 (the latest driver for the card) isnt supporting vulkan. The main reason I want to use a linux distro on this laptop is because its lightweight and old games like 1.12.1 WoW do pretty well under GEProton. So my question.. I read some stuff about the Nouveau drivers but before I waste another 20 hours: do they got vulkan implemented in the meantime? Since I found a thread about people talking that it could maybe happen and it was years ago.. so did it happen? or will it ever happen? - or is the best option for this laptop really winyikes?

Very Odd Minecraft Issue with Resolution

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 4 Stunden 57 Minuten

I am using Sodium through Fabric. I am running on a laptop (2560x1600) with an external monitor attached (1920x1080). Whenever I launch the game, it opens in windowed mode on the laptop screen. So, I drag it over to the other monitor and press F11 to put it in fullscreen mode but it pulls it up the laptop screen. So, I use shift+meta+right to move it to the external monitor, but when I open the F3 menu, it's running at 2880x1800, which has rather adverse effects on the game's performance.

When I go to the settings however, there's both the vanilla menu and the Sodium menu. Sodium menu says that fullscreen resolution is only configurable if I am running on Windows. If I go to the vanilla menu and I change the resolution at all, the game remains open but vanishes, as if it was minimized, but it requires pressing F11 2-5 times for it to return - still running at the wrong resolution. Even when in windowed mode on the external monitor, the game runs at 2880x1618. Is there any way I can solve this issue, or should I just scurry back to windows for this?

Is Proton's performance getting worse?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 5 Stunden 3 Minuten

Lately it seems like even with decent hardware, my machine can't even run games on lowest settings with FSR3/DLSS frame gen/whatever set the lowest internal resolution.

System is a Ryzen 5950X, RTX 3090, 32GB of RAM and PopOS running 22.04 LTS.

I'm not entirely sure where the issue might be, but performance is wildly different between games. Something like KCD2 or Atom Fall runs amazing, don't even need DLSS to hit 120 fps at high settings.

Meanwhile a game like Avowed, Oblivion Remaster or Expedition 33 barely chugs along even with frame generation.

How to “listen” to a device

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 5 Stunden 11 Minuten

I mostly play PC games but I have Xbox that I like to play on pretty frequently. On windows, I had it set up so that it would feed the Xbox audio back into my wired PC headphones and this was pretty easy to achieve, simply go into audio devices and tick the box that said “listen” (in my case it was line in) and I was wondering how you can achieve this on Linux. I’ve done some google-fu, tried enabling loopback in alsamixer, still no sound from the Xbox.

I’m on Nobara which came installed with Pulse Audio and I can see the device I want to listen in on but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to do it. If anyone’s got any insight it’d be greatly appreciated.

Elden Ring Fills Up RAM and Crashes PC While Loading

Reddit Linux_Gaming - vor 7 Stunden 59 Minuten

I've been trying to run Elden Ring on Fedora 42. The game boots up fine and gets into character customisation however once I start loading in my whole pc hard freezes. I cant even switch to another TTY, I have to hard reset my pc. When I have managed to alt tab during the loading process I can see my RAM filling up very quickly before everything freezes.

The game used to work for me (a long time ago) and every other game I've tried works fine so i'm pretty sure I didnt bork any system configs, it's just Elden Ring.

I honestly have no idea where to even start with this issue. What I have currently tried is switching to proton-ge, switching to an older version of proton, running elden ring with "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%" argument.

Theres a deleted reddit post that had a similar issue (I saw it from the search engine cache) and I tried the solution proposed by a user in the comments but he mentions that it could kernel issue. However I've seen another post that mentions the user running it fine on his f42 install so it must be some sort of tinkering ive done to my system over time (It's quite an old install aha)

Anyway, any help would be really appreciated, even if its just directing me to the relevant log files, ive never had to look into an error like this so I dont even know where to start with logs.

Steam Recording on Linux
