Any chance installing Linux on new computer would improve gaming performance?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. April 2025 - 05:11

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help me understand whether or not gaming/hardware performance would improve by installing Linux rather than the default Windows OS?

Context:

I use Linux often at work and I have had Macs for the last 10 years. I got a new Mac a few years ago and I was pretty upset to see the lack of support for games that I like on MacOS. I am thinking about buying a new home computer for gaming and such. I am thinking about maybe trying Linux as the OS for this computer.

Questions:

However, I have 2 questions about this.

  1. Is there anyway that games could perform better on the same hardware with Linux as the OS, rather than windows?

  2. I saw from a Quick Look on steam that many classic steam games (if they have limited support) are only available on Windows. Is there enough support for many games to not be limited in game choice by having Linux as the OS?

Thanks in advance!

Steam keeps crashing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. April 2025 - 05:08

I want to start off by saying I'm very new to Linux (only had this computer for a few days). I built my PC a few days ago and decided to use Ubuntu as the OS. I downloaded steam and, using Proton Experimental, I was able to play a few single player games. Then I tried playing R.E.P.O with a few friends and every time I would join the game I would get the steam notification "Steam not responding" with the options to wait or to force quit. I tried both and neither worked. (Force quit did not even force quit steam but it did terminate the game). Every time I try playing the game in multiplayer it does this.

If you need any more information please ask (I just don't know what is important to add since I am new to linux)

thanks

Linux mint cannot be booted up, <Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found Failed to load image : Not found Failed to start MokManager: Not Found Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Not Found>

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. April 2025 - 02:42

Hey there, i have flashed linux mint to my usb stick, and the first time i placed it into my usb boot it worked fine, but i had to log off for reasons, and now whenever i try and boot it up, it gives this error:

<Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found

Failed to load image : Not found

Failed to start MokManager: Not Found

Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Not Found>

A solution i found was to change the Grubx64.efi to mmx64.efi , but whenever I would try and change the name it would not let me do it, the option was grayed out. Help?

i3 - Window management

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. April 2025 - 00:17

Looking for a few tips. Working with i3 here. Games just run fine, but, it it sometimes hard to get out of them. Some equivalent of alt-tabbing is what I am looking for.

For some I can force them small by using the fullscreen key. Some, I can send to another desktop. Others ignore that at all. Some catch my mouse, so even though they are small, it is hard to use the mouse in any other window.

Any good tricks? Something like, oh just send the app to a buffer that is not actually there, like in vim buffers, that would be awesome.

CIV VII Launch/close

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. April 2025 - 00:02

Has anyone experienced CIV VII launching and immediately closing on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS? I was able to purchase it on steam but it fails on launch.

Arch + 9070 XT + 9800X3D good performance for the first 30 mins

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2025 - 23:50

I just upgraded to a B850 + AMD 9800X3D + Asus Prime 9070XT and it works awesome, snappy boot, no issues with Wayland after minimal tweaking, adjusted fan curve with LACT, etc.

I disabled split locking to avoid the constant spam of kernel warnings when using Steam. I'm running the latest arch kernel (6.14.2) btw.

The issue though is that after a not so long gaming session (30-45 mins in average) with awesome FPS the system just slows down (card GPU clock goes down, power draw as well, etc.) and I go from 140FPS to an unusable choppy performance. If I close the game entirely and re-launch it, it works fine for another 30-45 mins.

It doesn't seem to be the game, since its the card that slows down completely (you can see it clearly on LACT if left monitoring).

Has anyone experienced this? Any tips?

Thanks!

Intel Arc B580?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2025 - 23:25

Now these GPU's have been out for awhile, how are they performing in Linux for gaming? I'm going to put together a "steam machine" with Bazzite, and before I pull the trigger on a rx6600, I though I would ask here about these.

Mouse isn't bound to game using gamescope, kde-plasma, and wayland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2025 - 22:11

Hello! I am trying to run a few games using gamescope in order to use HDR but when I run the game, my mouse isn't bound to the window and moves to other monitors. I tried using --force-grab-capture but I had the same results. When I don't use gamescope, the mouse is captured. I was trying to use gamescope with gnome (also on wayland) and while I was testing, I don't remember running into this issue. I have tried a few different launch options but I will leave below my latest that I was testing with along other specs. Thank you!

Distro: Endeavour OS DE: KDE-Plasma Proton: GE-Proton9-27 GPU: Nvidia 3080ti CPU: AMD 5800x3D Games Tested: Ghost of Tsushima & Cyberpunk 2077 Launch Options: gamescope -H 1440 -W 3440 -r 240 -f -O DP-1 --adaptive-sync --hdr-enabled --force-grab-cursor --mangoapp -- %command%

how do i use the sims 4 mod manger in linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2025 - 21:46

i installed the sims 4 mods manger the .exe that didnot run through bottle it was giving an error say download it form another link that i didnot but i installed the alternative setup from the orignal website it installed but it does not launch i copy the mod manager files and tried it in heroic games launceher the same thing happens it doesnot launch .in theory it should work cause sims 4 stores the mod folder in the documents which are accesible by all the wine prefix.i donot think that the mod manger needs access to the game because it only add the mod to the mods folder in documents not the game . it just automatically installs mods and puts them into the mods folder .the reason to use mod manger is to organize the mods and install alot of them at once instead of doing it one by one

Android Emulation / Playstation App

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2025 - 21:15

I have recently switched to Linux blah blah blah you all know the stick.

On my Windows machine I had BlueStacks installed so I could connect to my friends PlayStation Party via the PlayStation App (I know PlayStation has a Discord feature, but you cant stream so this was, probably, the only option)

After switching I tried to search for an Emulator similar to BlueStacks and found 2 options: Waydroid and Genymotion.

Waydroid seemed fine at first but I couldn't connect to the Internet with it so I searched a bit online and found this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/waydroid/comments/z57rx7/help_i_cant_connect_waydroid_to_internet/

It didn’t work so I searched for a different Emulator an found Genymotion

Genymotion seemed fine at first but I learned that none of the free devices available had the capabilities to install the Playstation App so I am at a standstill.

To come to my Question now, does anybody here know of a way I could connect to my friends Playstation Party?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Greenlight on Arch Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2025 - 20:06

I have Game Pass Ultimate for my Xbox and ROG Ally but wanted to see if there was anything I can do on my PC which runs Arch. It looks like there are three greenlight AUR apps. Any version recommended over the others? looks like they're all based of the same github project.
