I'm thinking on changing to Linux, but i'm still not sure

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 10:47

Recently I been watching a lot of videos talking about how my OS, Windows 11, is the biggest shit ever made. I found accusations of having bloatware and spyware, severe optimization issues, and, this one is from my experience, a ton of stuff that i never use.

I also been hearing that they want to implement some AI stuff on Windows 12 that will require new hardware, and i'm not in the mood to start planning new upgrades to my PC, specially since I find utterly unnecessary to have an AI on my OS.

So, I been thinking on changing to Linux, but i have some doubts regarding the OS and compatibility.

First of, what OS should i use? My strongest candidate right now is CachyOS, since it integrates a gaming configuration, but i'm not sure if there's a better option.

Secondly, and the most important, i want to know if there will be losses in my library. I know that Steam has Proton, that system that allows some Windows games to run on Linux, but the thing is i also have games on GOG and only a few are natively compatible with Linux. There's a solution to that, or i'm basically screwed?

Those are the specific things that i want to know, but i will also appreciate information regarding security or performance.

Poor gaming performance on Linux (Zorin OS)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 10:47

So far performance has been poor on zorin os, with cs2 going from 100-120 fps on windows to 40-45 fps on zorin. I've checked for drivers, and even installed with the nvidia graphics driver option, and have no idea what to do further on

Cod "online" | native cod mobile pc port on linux support.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 10:47

cod mobile pc port, "cod online". has anyone gotten the game to work or know how to on linux. farthest i have reached was the launcher installed and trying to hit play but the "ace" anti cheat fails to load. lemme know if anyone has any info on the matter. i cant play any cods from mw2019 and up through official means. i know donesk and various other projects exist for those titles but i rather not pirate a game i already own on steam. but with this game being free and somewhat enjoyable i would like to play without the need of windows if possible.

Lutris Environmental Variables don't affect Steam games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 10:44

I use Lutris a launcher for all my games, I set up some global env variables such as Proton_enable_wayland, mangohud etc. when i launch non-steam games it works perfectly fine but for steam games it seems that Steam completely ignores all settings from Lutris? In the end I always have to copy my env variables and paste them into each steam game manually which i find kind of annoying and i just wish there was an easy way to apply all the ones i want automatically while maintaining the option to change them on a per game basis

Having issues getting nvidia-driver <550 on Pop! OS for my 1080 ti

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 10:18

Hi!

I recently moved to Pop! OS 20. LTS (Not the one with nvidia drivers bundled). Now i am having issues with the 580 nvidia driver on my setup. At random times the screen completley freezes and i have to reboot and hard reset the gpu. For some reason when i try to install the 545 or any other <550 nvidia driver, it reroutes it to 580 in apt. In the image attached apt automatically chooses the first package, which is labled 545 but is actually 580.

I have tried:
- Using nouveau driver, still causes the same crashes (but recovers and reboots by itself)
- explicitly asking for the actual 545 (second package in image) with apt. But refuses.

The Ultimate Distro For Zen 2 APU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 10:12

I have a laptop that uses a Zen 2 APU. Benchmarks show that I can reach playable performance in some games such as Witcher 3, Rise of The Tomb Raider, Batman Arkham Knight. And I'm very happy to be able to play these masterpieces. But I need maximum performance, even 5 percent is very important. That's why I need your advice. Please provide concrete evidence of what I should choose.

[TF2] TF2 freezes for a few seconds every couple of minutes on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 09:14

Hey everyone, I recently started playing Team Fortress 2 on Linux (Nobara, KDE, Wayland, Intel i3 11th gen with UHD Graphics and 8GB RAM).

The game runs fine, but every 2–3 minutes it freezes for a few seconds — only the game, not the whole system. After that it continues normally.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes or launch options that could help?

Dota 2 memory leak

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 09:03

Dota 2 seems to have a memory leak that results in a system crash. The speed of the leak seems to depend on the quality of graphics being used

I have tried the following without success

- Using different compatibility tools

w/o compatibility tool - leak linux runtime - leak hotfix - vac experimental - vac proton 9 - vac proton 10 - vac

- This launch option: LD_PRELOAD="" %command%

- Reinstalling the game

- Launching steam from terminal

- Disabling shader pre-caching in settings > downloads > shader pre-caching

- Installing AMD's drivers from their website

- Running the program in borderless window

System:

OS: Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS

CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 5 7600

GPU: AMD Radeon™ RX 6650 XT
RAM: 16.0 GiB

Kernel: Linux 6.14.0-33-generic

Suggestions are welcomed. Thanks!

Gaming on Linux has come a long way and now we need to focus on something similar to Gaming Copilot.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 08:40

I tried Gaming Copilot yesterday on Windows and was AMAZED by how well it works and how useful/fun it can be to have someone all knowing advise (and not spoil) you and give extra info about the game (whether it's the development background or simply lore). The problem is that I have to use Windows to use it (which I will do).

Now, is there ANY way I can set up something similar in Linux currently and if not what are the chances Fedora or someone else do something like that for Linux?

Steel Seed going black in game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 08:19

I've made a few threads about similar issues in the last few months regarding various games.

When I first installed this game months ago I had no issues playing it. I have 14 hours put into it. The only thing that has changed is CachyOS updates.

I can get through all initial splash screens, etc, up to the main menu where the screen goes black for a second before the menu becomes visible. Then, once I click on Continue to resume my game, the screen goes completely black and I can hear the game load into my save and can control the PC and move around but the screen just remains black and the game is unplayable. The game only becomes visible when it loses focus ie: I alt-tab out or press the Windows key to open the OS menu. The only way I can close the game is to right click on the game in the task bar and close it.

Initially I was not forcing compatibility and Steam was handling that by default, but when this issue started, I added PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command% to the launch options and forced compatibility in order to try different versions of Proton. I've tried obviously the default CachyOS Proton and Proton Experimental. Posts on the ProtonDB suggest that it works fine with Proton 9.0-4 but I could not get it to work. Another post on that same page says he had to use GE-Proton9-27. That did not work for me either. I've also tried GE-Proton 10-12, GE-Proton 10-17, GE-Proton 10-20. At this point I'm shooting in the dark.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone know what is going on here? I'm inclined to believe it is a Wayland issue, as it seemed to be causing all my other similar problems and I suspect that if I booted into my Mint installation it would likely play Steel Seed without an issue in Xorg. I haven't confirmed that but, if anyone wants me to, I can.

Nothing is working and this game is unplayable. This is far from the only game with which I've had similar issues and it's pretty frustrating. Until now I've managed to make them all work. At first, with Borderlands 3, adding that line pertaining to Wayland in the Steam launch options seemed to resolve the problem, but that didn't last. Even Borderlands 3 later had the same issue which was only resolved by upgrading GE-Proton. Linux gaming has come a very long way in the last couple of years, but it's hard to say it's as good as Windows when you can't even expect your games to work from one day to the next even if they worked fine initially. I have no intention of going back to Windows and if I can't get this game working I will just keep trying until hopefully it will eventually work again but I'm frankly getting kind of tired of this.

EDIT: Just now I tried GE-Proton 10-8 and the menu actually faded in and faded out instead of abruptly popping onto the screen. I thought it was going to work when the game was briefly visible after loading my save, but it only lasted a blink before the screen went black again and no amount of moving around could bring it back.

EDIT #2: Well, I've applied CachyOS updates and rebooted the machine and it seems to be working now. Is this just a quirk of CachyOS? Rolling releases in general?

Dark Souls III The stutter continues.....

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 07:57

Here is my previous post about this.

So after i was thinking my issue is solved, the stutter issue still come back. I'm literally on a breaking point. No matter what i do, Dark Souls III starts stuttering after 20-30 min of play time. Non of my other games do this, i tested with Red Dead Redemption 2, No man's sky, Kingdom Come, Elden Ring.

Here is what i did to counter the stutter:

Using different proton version, different proton-GE version. I have installed 22 proton-GE version, non of them worked.

Configure vsync in mangohud config.

Tried a bunch of different launch command.

Adding a dxvk.conf config file in the game root folder with different configs.

Tried Wayland, and X11 with or without compositor with every single porton and proton-GE version and launch commands.

I purchased a brand new SSD, because I'm desperate to playing this game, still nothing.

Tried a bunch of distros, like Bazzite, Cachy OS, Endeavour OS, Debian 13, Mint, nothing.

Tried Liquorix kernel, nothing.

Tried enabling steam shader chache, nothing.

Tried running DS3DebugFPS mod, the mod is working, but it still not solved my issue.

All of the above with different combinations, nothing solved it.

My PC config:

RX 5600 XT 6GB

Ryzen 3 4100

2x16GB RAM

I'm desperate for help, please if anybody knows why this specific game stutters help me.

Like i said on my previous post, i played this game a lot in Linux with a weaker card, and it was running fine. But now, no matter what i do, it's stutters.

Discord keeps resetting my manually set name for a game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 07:27

I recently swapped from flatpak discord to native discord from their site so I could get quests and rich presence working correctly. It works 90% of the time, but I still have a few games where it recognizes the .exe that steam is running, not the true name of the game. In discord's settings, I manually set the name (like for example The Finals gets called discovery-e and I change it to say THE FINALS in discord), it gets set correctly, I re-launch the game and it doesn't recognize the entry where I manually set the name, and it treats it like a new game all over again.

So going with my finals example, first time I open, discord calls the game discovery-e, I change it to THE FINALS, it updates correctly and all is good for the session. I close the game and reopen the game, a new game appears as my current activity again called discovery-e, but my manually created entry with the title THE FINALS is still is my list of registered games, that points to the same exe.

Anyone know why this happens or if I can fix it?

Best WM to go for?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 07:16

I've been using KDE on my Cachy for about 1 year and thought about going to Sway, Hyprland or Niri. I am curious about gaming performance on these before moving on, my specs are 12gb RAM and AMD Ryzen 7 5700U.

lagbomb solved by restarting my monitor

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 06:36

I've been using Linux for gaming for years, but several months to 1 year ago I started getting this weird performance bug on my system. The gist of it is games becoming so slow in framerate to the point of being unplayable, after closing any other game. I have 1 chance to play a game lag-free before the lag bomb occurs and I need to restart. This "lag bomb" can also occur in realtime after about 30-40 minutes of gameplay, but it's much more easily replicatable by simply closing and relaunching a game. I've been living with it for so long it's part of my routine at this point, restarting/logging in before a session. Log in, play game fine, close game, start game again, lag bomb.

I just randomly discovered a much better workaround: restarting my monitor. Finally no more having to close the game and log back in. This has me hopeful that I can finally pinpoint and solve the issue. Here are some old clips I found of the issue occurring in Portal 2 and HL2.

I use Arch / Gnome Wayland / RX6600xt / Ryzen 5 5600xt / 165hz LG Ultragear (the issue happens whether or not Freesync is enabled) / reBAR enabled / Feral gamemode or CPU scheduler makes no difference / all drivers from Arch mesa package / everything at its defaults

Warhammer 40k: Speed Freaks

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 06:28

So, I installed Speed Freaks it formerly worked amazing on both my SteamDeck and on my Bazzite Desktop but recently it seems to start fine in GE Proton 10-10 gets to starting a match and then all GPU usage dumps to zero in System monitor and my CPU maxes out and the game rolls to a crawl and I have to Kill it

Then I tested it on the Steam Deck and sure enough it behaves similar now. The Proton DB says its still Gold rated. Anyone have any ideas, Are their any known launch options that might fix that?

I've tried a few versions of GE Proton, I'm wondering if a recent update killed that game in Proton

**"I have a question about Garuda Linux."**

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 05:41

Hello everyone,

I just installed Garuda Linux—I tried CachyOS right before and really liked it. I’m still not fully comfortable with Linux yet. I understand that I can switch kernels to “improve” performance. I have a somewhat unusual CPU: a Ryzen 9 7945HX with an RTX 5070, in a desktop setup (Miniforum motherboard). Are the Zen 4-optimized kernels worth it?

Also, with CachyOS, I had to disable C-states in the BIOS because they caused freezes, no matter which distro I used. Is there any option that would allow me to keep C-states enabled?

Does disabling C-states actually impact performance? I haven’t noticed any difference so far.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Looking For Advice On Transitioning to Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Oktober 2025 - 05:22

Hello everyone, I'm hoping to move from Windows 11 to Arch Linux in the near future, but I'm new to Arch and I also play some games that are gonna potentially require some tinkering to get running how I want before I can fully cut the strings and be free of Microsoft. I should also mention I have an Nvidia GPU which I've read can sometimes be a challenge.

My idea is to install a second SSD drive and install Linux on that one first and setup a dual boot where I can run either Windows or Linux. My thought is that I'll be able to take my time getting acquainted with Arch and gaming on Linux in general and when I'm ready I can turn the Windows drive into extra storage. I have a X570S Aorus Master motherboard and it seems like I can definitely install multiple SSDs but I've been reading that not all the slots are treated the same and one is connected to the CPU whereas the others are not. This has me wondering if my hypothetical plan is even feasible. Would anyone be able to let me know if installing an OS to an SSD in one of these secondary slots would cause issues when booting from it? If it's just a tad slower, then I don't really mind since it would only be temporary anyway, unless it would be so much slower that it would make it difficult to identify any potential problems with my setup. For example, I've read that people tend to have performance issues when they use an NTFS formatted drive and if I made a mistake like that I wouldn't want to end up assuming the performance issue is tied to the drive installation instead of the file system if that makes sense.

For context, I do have some coding experience and I've used Linux in the past just normally Debian based distros. I'm not super techy but I'm comfortable for the most part using command line tools and editing config files so I think I should be able to handle Arch, I'm just trying to leave some room for growing pains as I attempt to make it my daily driver.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
