Heroic Game Launcher & Unreal Tournament 2004 error message "Your CD key appears to be invalid. You will need to reinstall the game and enter your CD key to fix this problem."

06. April 2024 - 21:44

Hello. I am trying to install Unreal Tournament 2004 on Heroic Game Launcher.

I am installing the GOG version that is available free for download on Archive.org.

I don't want to hear anything about piracy. You can't legally buy the game anywhere so that's the only way for me.

The GOG installer worked fine and when I try to launch the UT2004.exe it shows the Unreal Tournament 2004 splash screen but then it shows the following error message: "Your CD key appears to be invalid. You will need to reinstall the game and enter your CD key to fix this problem."

I actually ran the GOG installer again and again, the installing process went fine without issues but again, launching the game will only give me the same error.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

On X11, VRR only works when v-sync is enabled ingame

06. April 2024 - 21:03

No matter if the framerate is within my monitor's VRR range or not.
VRR just doesn't work unless I enable v-sync ingame.
The problem is that World of Warcraft has cursor issues when having v-sync on.

On Wayland it works fine.

Is there a way to solve this?

Arch, 6800XT, RADV, no matter DE or WM.

How do the below mentioned games work on Linux?

06. April 2024 - 20:19

I've been researching (mostly on ProtonDB) but the reviews are mixed: for some it works OOTB while some can't even launch the game). If any of you play any of these games, how do they work for you:

Minecraft

Apex Legends

Battlefield 1

Counter Strike 2

Forza Horizon 4

GTAV

[HELP] Fan control on ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming motherboard

06. April 2024 - 19:48

Hello, I've been bashing my head into this. I have 4-pin PWM fans in my case connected to my ASUS B450-F Gaming motherboard which I can see and control from the UEFI panel, though since I want to drive the fan speeds using the GPU sensors as sources (since the biggest heat comes from the GPU in a gaming pc and I cannot access the GPU temps from UEFI panel) I am trying to access the pwm controls from userspace with programs such as lm-sensors and fan2go. The issue that I am encountering is that I can read fan RPMs but cannot see PWM values (and consequently cannot control them). In other words under /sys/class/hwmon/ I cannot see the pwm files for the fans.

Is there anybody that encountered a similar issue with this motherboard that can give me a lead/solution? Or is it a firmware limitation so I should just give up and control the fans using CPU temp hoping it will rise enough when the GPU is getting hotter?

I am on Nobara Linux 6.8.2-201.fsync.fc39.x86_64 GNU/Linux, while the motherboard is on its latest Firmware 5404

Apparent text input popping on the upper left corner on my screen when I try to game?

06. April 2024 - 19:37

I'm playing on Linux, through Proton, using keyboard and mouse.

When I'm in game, whenever I press the right mouse button and a certain keyboard key (tilde in my case), the game loses input and I'm seeing that blue-bordered white rectangle with a cursor on the top-left corner of the screen.

Once it had even a message about clipboard something.

My desktop environment is KDE6. I'm on Arch.

https://ibb.co/HXBP8M5

The shortcut only happens in game so I'm wondering if it's Proton or Steam related.

I can't find what this is and I want it out.

Thanks in advance.

Saints Row 2022 Vulkan performance

06. April 2024 - 19:10

The game offers 3 options (DX11, DX12, Vulkan) and while DX12 seems fine apart from broken FSR, Vulkan is unplayable with like 20fps. Shouldn't it actually run better since Vulkan is the primary API on Linux while DX is running with a compatibility layer? Running latest Arch with Proton Experimental.

How can I throttle my mobile 4090 (again)?

06. April 2024 - 18:21

Running AI (ok, it's not gaming, but it's a GPU question) stuff I can easily bring my mobile 4090 to get very hot and pull the CPU with it. A 99°C on the CPU isn't uncommon. And doing some model training this can go on for a few hours.

So it's not only unhealthy for the system (although I expect the designer/developer/builder of the laptop to take that into account, so that it should be able to withstand it), it's also bad for interactively using my laptop during the time as the fans are running full speed and the keyboard is getting hot. So I prefer to limit the power draw of the GPU as this will only increase the training time; and waiting one hour more to finish training doesn't matter as much as having a laptop that's hardly usable at the same time (it's power is plugged in and thus not running on battery, of course).

I used to have the driver 525.147.05 and could easily change the maximum power consumption:

$ sudo nvidia-smi -pl 80 Power limit for GPU 00000000:01:00.0 was set to 80.00 W from 115.00 W. Warning: persistence mode is disabled on device 00000000:01:00.0. See the Known Issues section of the nvidia-smi(1) man page for more information. Run with [--help | -h] switch to get more information on how to enable persistence mode. All done.

But switching to a newer driver version (545.29.06 is the latest driver I got offered by Ubuntu right now) this happens:

$ sudo nvidia-smi -pl 80 Changing power management limit is not supported for GPU: 00000000:01:00.0. Treating as warning and moving on. All done.

Also setting a temperature limit doesn't work (neither with 525 nor with 545):

$ sudo nvidia-smi -gtt 75 GPU Target Temperature Threshold not supported for GPU 00000000:01:00.0. Treating as warning and moving on. All done.

So how can I limit the maximum power draw of the GPU with a newer driver version?

OS used is Kubuntu. But that doesn't matter as it's an nVidia driver / toolset question / issue.

Actually, League of Legends will still be playable on linux

06. April 2024 - 17:59

> Riot says MacOS won't need Vanguard

> LoL can be played in MacOS through VM

I mean, it will require stronger hardware and will be definitely harder to set up than just using Lutris, but that's just a stronger reason to keep r/leagueoflinux alive, isn't it?

Also, running LoL through a VM means you won't have Vanguard running on your PC all the time, so I would consider switching to that even if I used Windows.

I know there will be people saying "At this point, why wouldn't you just stop playing it?", but some people have social circles that use LoL as a pretext to gather and socialize online sometimes, so having to stop participating in it just because you use another OS isn't a great thing to consider.

How do I debug game issues on Linux?

06. April 2024 - 15:46

I am having issues running non native games with Steam and Proton. No version of Proton works. Steam shows the game as running but the game window does not pop up. I tried running a native game with Proton and had the same issue which causes me to think that Proton is the issue. But i want to be sure and know how to debug and fix it and also in case this happens in the future again.

I tried running steam from the terminal but it does not seem to be much helpful.

steam.sh[9527]: Running Steam on pop 22.04 64-bit steam.sh[9527]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically setup.sh[9598]: Steam runtime environment up-to-date! steam.sh[9527]: Steam client's requirements are satisfied tid(9664) burning pthread_key_t == 0 so we never use it

My specs:

Kernel: 6.8.0
Nvidia driver: 550.67
Distro: PopOS

Why do so many Steam games with SteamOS + Linux "native" availability run so "paska" as Linus himself might say?

06. April 2024 - 15:18

Aside from indie/small games and Valve games (God bless this mfing company) i had to almost all of the bigger titles using proton (experimental)

This War of Mine (base game) starts but if you add DLCs you can only run thru proton

SOMA ran the best out of all of the "big guys" except for some weird gamma errors/bugs

Dying Light one of the more praised LN games didn't start with or without bonus content had to use proton

Don't even get me started on the metro series, finished all games from 2033 to exodus, the steamOS/Linux tag is there only for gender/racial inc.l or something, at this point they can just straight up swap it with the lgbt+ flag instead

Are there are any big games that receive constant, careful and serious maintenance of their linux nat. versions? (aside from Valve ones)

PS: I'm NOT homophobic, don't ban me for it, used it as a joke can't even believe i have to put a note here

How much ram should I leave for the OS when running Minecraft server

06. April 2024 - 14:46

Hello,

So I am setting up a Minecraft Server on an old laptop. I have installed the latest Ubuntu Server LTS. The laptop has 8 GB of ram and I am wondering how much of that I can safely allocate to Minecraft, so that the OS and other processes won't struggle. I don't plan to have anything else running on the server.

Can't launch The Finals anymore

06. April 2024 - 14:37

Hey guys, since quite some time i have quite an unusual problem.

Every time i try to start The Finals it loads EAC and then tries to start then this message pops up.

https://preview.redd.it/memj304htusc1.png?width=325&format=png&auto=webp&s=f3348b401c8ada3d765ec858a6f0dccfe715e0b6

Never had that before. I also doesn't matter with which proton i start it. It always runs into this error even if it says on protondb that it should work fine.

I hope somebody can help me :)Kind regards :)
