Anyone know why Proton-GE flatpak is discontinued?

6 May 2024 - 5:21am

I noticed that the Proton-GE flatpak is discontinued in Flathub and hasn’t been updated in awhile.

I’m bringing a gaming box back up that was using the Flatpak version of Steam. Does this mean I won’t have access to newer Proton versions anymore, or does Steam just manage Proton versions internally now?

Honkers Railway Launcher ban issue

6 May 2024 - 4:34am

Has anyone tried Honkers Railway Launcher recently, especially the flatpak version? I heard months ago that using this launcher to log in could result in account ban. Is this still an issue right now?

Xbox game pass on linux using a windows vm, Is it possible?

6 May 2024 - 4:27am

There is a post on the mac gaming subreddit from 3 years ago using parallels. To my understanding parallels is essentially just a virtual machine that runs windows 10/11. Surely the VM options on linux are far better and should be able to use the game pass app far more easier than an m1 based mac? But I have only ever seen mentions of xcloud on linux and not the native app whenever game pass and linux are in the same sentence. I do not see anything on this sub either in regards to this, game pass is such a great deal that it makes sense that someone here would have tried to make it work. Is it just not possible at all?

Linux gaming feels... unsustainable

6 May 2024 - 3:57am

So I've enjoyed plenty of games through Proton. I've got a Steam Deck and a PC that I use quite a bit to play games on Linux. There aren't too many problems I run into these days, although the ones I do can be quite annoying. Overall, it's a mostly drama-free experience.

However, I always have a lingering feeling in the back of my head that this approach of translating Windows APIs and playing catch-up with developers just isn't sustainable and could fall apart at any moment. What happens if Valve loses interest in us? What if Microsoft makes some changes to the Direct3D API and leaves us in the dust trying to get new games running smoothly?

Ultimately, my concern is that Linux gaming has a really shaky foundation based around one big gaming company throwing money at it. Developers don't really give a shit about us, and we're fundamentally super low on the totem pole. PC games are already often times ported lazily and sloppily, with little thought put into Windows users' experiences. What does that mean for us?

I understand that game development is hard and we have a small market share, but it's frustrating to me that it seems little progress has been made in having a more Linux-native ecosystem of games. I feel like leaning so much into Proton is going to bite us in the ass. Anyone else feel similarly?

My experience testing NVK from Mesa-24.0.6

6 May 2024 - 3:49am

I'm on LFS so getting Nouveau and NVK to work unfortunately took the better part of 10 hours. That's neither here nor there, it's on my system. Just a few days ago, I was daily driving using the nVidia proprietary driver on an RTX 3060 Ti, Ampere. So what do I play, and what was my performance using nVidia proprietary driver?... Well I don't play a lot of games, however the biggest example is SkyrimSE. My performance? Rarely did Skyrim ever dip in performance, smooth 165 FPS at 1920x1080 resolution sitting at Ultra High Quality.

When I switched over to Nouveau and NVK (what Mesa calls nouveau-experimental at the moment), Skyrim detected my hardware and set at Ultra Quality. So I went in thinking it was gonna be smooth, it was not... in fact, it didn't even launch beyond the mini OpenGL menu window before the game switches to Vulkan and for most people goes full screen.

The first bit is that MESA_VK_VERSION_OVERRIDE=<major>.<minor> must be set in the launch options, although I might put it in ~/.bash_profile and see if that works. <major> is 1 and <minor> is 3, for now. Setting this option allowed me to play Skryim beyond the OpenGL window, and performance in the main menu was smooth, although the mouse was ever so slightly lagging behind my movements.

Continuing from my previous save, still on the high settings I was on and in Riverwood, FPS was a good 2 or 3 FPS. It wasn't great, and was unplayable. Turning the settings all the way down for Low led to the game being 20 FPS. Definitely a lot better! Going even further down to 1280x720, FPS was about 45 to 60 FPS, even better.

I also tested another game, thou shalln't be named here, but the game failed to get past a black screen, even with the env variable.

It's obvious NVK is still being worked on and improved. The fact Skyrim can run at 45 FPS at 720p is pretty good and it's getting better. If you do play games like Skyrim though, perhaps you should wait even longer. It is taking time but things are improving rapidly. Hope this helps anyone considering to use the NVK driver!

Extremely high temperature at launcher of Trackmania Canyon

6 May 2024 - 1:37am

Okay so I have these two games Trackmania Stadium and Trackmania Canyon on Proton 8.0-5, the two uses the same launcher, probably have the same engine behind it and for some reason on my Framework 12th Gen i7-1260p running Fedora 38 it hits 100°C when running Canyon AT THE LAUNCHER when i even did not start to play the game, i'm really blown away what is going on there?? I probably have to repaste my laptop but i really can't explain this difference in temperature. But if i play Stadium which has the exactly same Maniaplanet launcher it stays at 55°C at the launcher. I put the same graphics settings, on the lowest possible. The two are using ppd with powersave the all time.

Xenia runs surprisingly well on Mint!

5 May 2024 - 10:47pm

Helllo!

I recently started to use Xenia again, I used it a couple of times when I used Windows and it ran kinda poorly (I got like 20fps most of the times), however now that I'm running it in Mint (sideloaded with steam and using ProtonGe 9.4) it runs really amazing!

On paper Xenia looks like a very simple emulator: it only has a few files and the save folder is basically just there, a lthough it runs very well and it looks almost identical to my Xbox 360.

So far I've run only a few games: Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, Fable 2 and Kingdom under Fire - Circle of Doom; the only two issues I have encountered are some music and dialog tracks don't play in PDZ and in fable II there are occasional framerate drops (but nothing crazy, it goes to 25 or so)...

I have seen people making it run to 60FPS and I've always wondered: how is it possible? (Since the xbox 360 had a native refresh rate of 30FPS Max, right)..?

I would like to read someone else's experience with Xenia on Linux PCs or Steam Decks!

Some native Steam games don't launch under Wayland

5 May 2024 - 10:46pm

I'm using Hyprland and if I try to launch either Crypt of The Necrodancer or Into the Breach, no window appears and the "Stop" button quickly becomes "Play" again. If I launch in an X11 server everything works normally. I've tried forcing Proton but the result is no different.

It would seem the LD_PRELOAD error would be the issue, but other games with the same error run well.

Here's the command line prints when I launch Into the Breach:

Tech support request: Baldur's Gate 3 completely locks up system intermittently

5 May 2024 - 9:26pm

Not sure where to post this, thought this might be a good starting point. My system specs/configuration:

OS: NixOS 24.05.20240323.44d0940 (Uakari) x86_64

Host: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. WS C246 PRO

Kernel: 6.6.22

Resolution: 2560x1440 (60 Hz), 2560x1440 (165 Hz)

DE: Hyprland (Wayland)

CPU: Intel i9-9900K (16) @ 5.000GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER

Memory: 4845MiB / 15858MiB

So sometimes, when I'm playing BG3, it will completely freeze my system. I'll just be playing regularly, and then suddenly it starts to grind to a halt quite quickly. In my mangohud, I'll see the frame times go to 850ms, it will play a few more frames, and play the audio in very short, chopped up parts. My system will turn completely turn unusable at this point. I think that for instance hotkeys will register but be handled as soon as the system is no longer locked up.

Coming to that, the system will continue after about 20 minutes (not every time, usually I would just press the reset button on my case so I don't have many data points of this, last time it happened I went for a walk and when I came back my system was back "online"), after which I can just continue to use the system normally, though both steam AND bg3 will have crashed (I can just restart them no problem though).

I'm currently playing it through Proton-GE-9.4, but I've also played on Proton-Experimental and Proton-8.0. I'm launching with these options (just copied from ProtonDB from someone with nvidia GPU with a similar generation one):

env --unset SDL_VIDEODRIVER PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 DXVK_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr,dxr11 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 mangohud %command% --skip-launcher --vulkan

Vulkan or DXVK makes no difference either. I do not run into this with any other games, cyberpunk 2077, for instance, runs fine all the time.

From the logs it looks like some process either has a memory leak or just goes completely rogue with memory usage.

In my journalctl, a lot of logs occur (what stands out to me is the discord app blocking, I will now try to play without discord turned on, see what that does). System seems to recover after about 20 minutes (wasn't there to see though). Not sure how I can best show the log, because it's about a thousand lines spewed out in a quite short time.

Help with Fallout: New Vegas GOG installer

5 May 2024 - 9:05pm

Hi guys!

I downloaded FNV gog edition but what i got was not the game itself but one installer and two big .bin files.
Then, I added the installer .exe file to Steam and did the proper stuff for it to run (I did exactly what is said here) but the installer is not shown. When I click the 'play' button it gets blue for an instant and then goes back to green and does nothing.

¿Can somebody help me?
