Avatar: frontiers of Pandora not working in Steam gamemode

vor 10 Stunden 47 Minuten

Hey guys,

I just installed avatar on my bazzite setup, both working "well" with bottles and lutris: - With Bottles I'm adding Ubisoft connect then install the game, I can only play from bottles directly, from Steam shortcut not working at all from desktop or gamemode. - From lutris I succeed to add the steam shortcut and game is working from desktop Steam.

My main issue is that with lutris, this Steam shortcut only works in desktop mode but not on "console" gamemode which I'm using in my living room. Do you guys have any suggestions to make it work?

Does linux even support kernal level anti cheats?

vor 10 Stunden 51 Minuten

Im not exactly new to linux but this whole anti-cheat situation has me confused, are kernal level anti cheats supported? which ones from which games? If not, should Wine and proton make effort towards supporting them, I probably wont play a game with a kernal level anti cheat or at the very least play it on another linux system i have where i dont care about privacy, I thought that maybe wine or proton developers had no intrest on supporting kernal level anti cheats because of how invasive they are. If thats the case then I'd understand that but also id like the option to play some of these games. Unless that the burden of linux support of AC's fall on the AC developer

Games becomes unplayable when I switch video mode in game, restarting a level, checkpoint or loading a save

vor 10 Stunden 56 Minuten

Hello. I encounter this issue with games like stray or carmageddon: max damage. I cannot change (lower) the resolution in stray because fps goes from ~40 down to ~10 and won't go back to normal, the same for some game animations or sometimes reloading a checkpoint (hit or miss). If i change the resolution again the image just freezes but i can hear the game running and i can still play it (with no video obviously).

Similiar things happens to carmageddon: max damage. I restart a level 4 or 5 times (more or less) and it starts to stutter a lot.

No difference using lutris wine runners (tried wine-ge 8.26 and lutris 7.2.2) or system wine 9.7 staging. The same using dxvk or vkd3d (stray dx11 or dx12). I cannot test nouveau or wined3d because they are just a slideshow. My system is: intel core i5 3570, 8 gb ram, nvidia geforce gt 1030 with proprietary drivers.

I'm using artix linux xfce s6, but I tried it with kde desktop too and other distros like devuan and MX linux.

Can't login

vor 12 Stunden 56 Minuten

Trying to play Sea Of Thieves, seems some strange issue with the recent update has done something to break compatibility. And now, I can get here manually launching the game from .exe, but I'm unable to type anything in this box. I'm running the latest version of arch with plasma 6. I have a 5700G and 6700XT if that matters. At a loss, and idk what to do. Anyone else experience this?

Playing Subnautica/Subnautica Below Zero breaks kernel/driver

vor 14 Stunden 4 Minuten

Here is my hardware and driver info

https://preview.redd.it/5zr50ydx9cyc1.png?width=497&format=png&auto=webp&s=004dcb17ac951365874032987930f39ae476cdb8

Whenever I play Subnautica and its sequel, it runs well for about 10 minutes before the FPS drops to 15 fps with less than 50% GPU usage. Quitting the game doesn't resolve the problem. Everything becomes laggy. Anything that requires any i/o grinds to a halt. Restarting doesn't resolve the issue. When checking CPU usage, random apps will have really high CPU usage (kde system monitor, firefox, glances might have 50-70% CPU usage). The only thing that I've managed to do to fix this is by reinstalling the kernels using arch-chroot. Other games I've tried (war thunder, stardew valley, sniper elite 3, portal revolution, darkest dungeon have not shown such problems. I have tried to make sure it's not a hardware problem by installing windows and playing the game without problem. Running on a freshly installed endeavouros also results in the same problem. I have tried it with nvidia 550 and 545 with the same result. Currently running 535 because of other problems. I have no idea what's causing all this but my current recourse is to just not play the game

All steam games suddenly stopped working

vor 14 Stunden 20 Minuten

For games that is running through proton such as Helldivers 2 and Fall guys, those games started briefly for like 10 seconds then stops I suspect it might have something to do with this in journalctl -f

May 04 11:22:12 superpc kwin_wayland[781]: kf.windowsystem: static bool KX11Extras::mapViewport() may only be used on X11

For Linux native games like Team Fortress 2 I get a windows popped up saying some error in the image below

This issues only started happening today as it have been working flawlessly without any issues before. I'm running KDE Plasma 6 on Arch Linux using Wayland on Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti for Proton I'm using GE-Proton9-4 and for both Native games I'm not using any command arguments.

[lol] GTA IV on X280 is surprisingly playable.

vor 14 Stunden 48 Minuten

So I usually use my desktop when it comes to gaming, I'm a simple man; I want always a good map of CIV VI and another game with a story.

Currently I'm wanting to play some rockstar games like GTA IV and Bully, which I've never finished. On my desktop I can play GTA IV with no problem, but I'm a little lazy setting up the game and play it on the tv.

Then there's my beloved ThinkPad X280:

  • Intel i5-8350U
  • Intel UHD 620
  • 256gb SSD + 128 SD
  • 8BitDo Ultimate Controller
  • Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon, just like my desktop

By no means this was made for gaming, but so far I've been testing things that runs well like:

  • Bully 1080@30
  • Dolphin 720@60
  • Valkyria Chronicles 1080@30
  • Senran Kagura: Bon Appetit 1080@60

So I decided to test part of my Steam library just for fun, that way I discovered that by installing GTA IV (and rockstar games launcher by extension) Bully was able to start in spanish when there was no way to start in spanish before at least for me.

Obviously the game ran horribly, with a weird glitch like a line of colors in the center of the screen and a lot of frameskip, but I noticed steam was reporting 30+ fps counts, which was weird since I was getting very inconsistent framerate while testing.

Investigating I found the next command that fixed the graphic glitch:

  • INTEL_DEBUG=nobc %command%

That fixed the graphics but I was getting still inconsistent framerate issues, so I found the Fusion Fix patch that allows to lock the fps and I decided to give it a try, then I applied the next command that I learned while testing Bully:

  • WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%

I started the game combining both commands, put the frame limiter to 30, downgraded the graphics settings and:

That's me driving with one hand and recording with the other at 1024x576@30fps

Yes, almost everything is set to the lower setting possible, but there are things that are adjustable, I'm playing in that video at 1024x576 which doesn't look bad on the small screen of that laptop, plus I think the performance is better than the PS3/360 versions at the time.

There can be some tweaks that I'll try sooner or later (I think there's still some room to improve since it keeps the 30fps most of the time), and for a lot of people it may look very ugly, but I didn't expect this level of performance on one of the worst optimized pc games that I've ever played and running on a compatibility layer.

I'm seriously considering playing this way in portable mode, not even on Windows I could run the game (it always closed before the loading screens).

This ThinkPad still surprises me.

Where can I find a definitive guide on how to play split-screen Minecraft Java edition on Linux - specifically with one player using a mouse and keyboard and another using a controller?

vor 16 Stunden 22 Minuten

So first off, I've tried running multiple instances using PolyMC, connecting them through a world opened to LAN. Both have the Controllable mod, but I only have xinput enabled for one instance so I don't end up controlling both with the same controller. The issue is that I can only control one window at a time, and the instance being ran with the xbox controller enabled ends up being stuck on the pause menu when I go into the LAN game.

I also tried doing split-screen with a QEMU virtual machine, but I didn't get very far when I realized that it wasn't something I was going to be able to do without instructions.

So... IDK what to do. I'm not finding anything on the internet that isn't either Windows-dependent, dependent on using Fabric as my modloader (I use Forge) or suggests what I've already tried, so any help would be appreciated.

Hoi4 multiplayer checksum issues - a resolution that introduces a different problem

vor 18 Stunden 45 Minuten

So up until a few hours ago, I was having this issue with hoi4 where my checksum was different from others using the same in the same load order. This was an old issue that I hadn't really bothered to actually fix, I'd assumed it was a file issue for the longest of time and did all the things I could think of - between reinstalling the game to reinstalling steam and contemplating reinstalling Ubuntu.

I did all of a sudden have the brainwave to force steam to use a linux compatibility tool, trying both steam play and proton (experimental, new and old versions); steam play had no obvious effect but Proton solved my old issue, which leads me on to my next issue.

The graphics seemed to be fucked by proton, like quite literally.

Normal Game (using Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 Scout))

With Proton 9.0-1 Enabled (all versions did this)

I am currently using Nvidia Drivers, specifically nvidia-driver-535, if this is of any relevance.

If anyone has any ideas/knows any solutions to this issue, any help/advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Please help. Games takes up a lot of space and after uninstalling Steam I can’t find the files to delete them.

vor 18 Stunden 53 Minuten

So I installed steam through snap on Ubuntu and discovered that I am unable to run some of the games (Elder scrolls online). During fixing I read that I need to install the steam through apt-get to resolve this. So I did it, but I forgot to uninstall the downloaded games first so now I have like 200GB blocked on my disk and I don’t know where are the game files, so I can delete them.

I tried to install the steam again through the snap in hope that the games will show themselves as installed and I will just uninstall them, or at least it will show me the installation location. But nothing worked and now I am a bit blocked, because I don’t have a lot of space left.

Can you please suggest a way how to find the old folders with game files? Thanks!

Looking for a long term distro

vor 20 Stunden 8 Minuten

Hi all! I'm closer everyday to ditch windows for good. I'm looking for advice choosing a distro for long term, kinda stable as possible but with up to date drivers and packages.

I'm currently running CachyOS, kinda testing and playing. But I'm planning to wipe my entire PC and restructure my drives.

I'm looking at Bazzite and CachyOS mainly. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Compiling Proton 9.0.1

vor 20 Stunden 26 Minuten

Tonight, I downloaded the Proton 9.0.1 source, modified some of the build args, compiled the project, installed it into the Steam directory, and tested it on DayZ. It was incredibly fast, smooth FPS, and stable. To me, it seems like it ran faster and smoother than in Windows 10. My Windows squad join and sometimes their game crashes but DayZ has never crashed for me in Linux. Maybe a fluke? Don't know, don't care, just enjoying it.

Get the source:

You don't need --branch proton-9.0-1 but it's nice to know how to explicitly download each individual version if you're not familiar with git.

git clone --recurse-submodules --branch proton-9.0-1 https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton.git proton901

Go into the Proton901 directory and open up Makefile.in with Mousepad or whatever editor you prefer. Find -Werror and remove that line. This gives me grief most of the time so removing it seems to do fine. However, it may cause the compiling to proceed without some necessary dependencies. I rolled the dice, myself, knowing that I installed a heap of dependencies.

Then find OPTIMIZE_FLAGS and change that line to "OPTIMIZE_FLAGS := -O2 -march=native" or even use -O3 if you want. I have been using O3 and it's been fine. I'm not going to make any claims about this, since this is your project to mess around with, try things out and have fun. I have tried some optimizations from the Gentoo people but found that they're not making big differences. I keep it simple. For me, -O3 -match=native is perfect.

https://preview.redd.it/oyn9vk8lcayc1.png?width=888&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a27af0bb3f3f25eefce3e4391e4de59397127aa

CHECK BELOW FOR FURTHER OPTIMIZATIONS (for educational purposes) before proceeding

cd proton901
mkdir build
cd build
../configure.sh --enable-ccache --build-name=proton901
make redist

This will take a while and it may end in an error due to a missing dependency.

However, if you see files within /proton901/build/redist then it probably worked. These are the files that you will copy into the Steam directory.

Create a directory here called Proton901:
/home/<YOUR USERNAME HERE- CHANGE ME>/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/

Now copy the contents of the redist directory into the Proton901 directory.

Within the /.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ should be all of the directories that hold your various versions of Proton.

https://preview.redd.it/2b5a9bencayc1.png?width=1101&format=png&auto=webp&s=e181c20b7e107e4ad9a6401a5f2dd0f2a3c908fc

CONFIGURE STEAM TO USE YOUR NEW PROTON VERSION

Set up Steam to use your Proton version: Start Steam->Settings->Compatibility->turn on Enable Steamplay for all titles AND select proton901 on the "Run with other titles" option.

OR

You can also go into the properties of each game in your library and select which Proton you want that game to use. Useful when some games work only on older Proton versions.

Now try running your favorite game with your newly compiled version of Proton! If everything works fine, great!

If you had errors, read the following:

You're going to need Docker installed but not the one that comes with Ubuntu. Google Docker and how to install the latest stable version on your distro.

You might need GCC 13.x because that's newer and some of the projects within Proton use operands that aren't supported in 12. Use a PPA, or even compile GCC yourself like I did from source.

There may be a handful of other dependencies needed and you could fill some of them just by using this commands:
sudo apt-get build-dep wine
sudo apt-get build-dep ffmpeg

Try others based upon the projects within the Proton directory until you stop getting errors. I'm sorry that I don't yet have a list of the most common dependencies but it will depend on your distro as well!

Some common questions:

"Why bother? What's the point?"
It's one of those things that you can't do in Windows so why not? It's also a great learning moment.

"Can I share the files in /home/<my username>/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ with my friends?"
Not unless they had the same CPU as you, or unless you didn't make the modifications that this guide used such as including the GCC FLAGS "-march=native"

"Will GCC 14 create a faster Proton when it's released?"
I really don't know but I'm reading that the GCC 14 improvements will affect certain CPUs and, in theory, it's possible.

OPTIMIZATIONS (for educational purposes only)

I added some additional lines into the Markefile.in and they look something like this:

DAV1D_MESON_ARGS =
-Doptimization=3
-Dc_args="-O3 -march=native"
-Dcpp_args="-O3 -march=native"
-Denable_tools=false
-Denable_tests=false

FFMPEG_CONFIGURE_ARGS :=
--extra-cflags="-O3 -march=native"
--extra-cxxflags="-O3 -march=native"
--extra-objcflags="-O3 -march=native"
--enable-shared
--disable-static
--disable-everything
--disable-programs
--disable-doc \

Modifying the build args for some proton projects can break the build but these all modify with the above optimizations just fine:
DAV1D_MESON_ARGS
GST_ORC_MESON_ARGS
GSTREAMER_MESON_ARGS
GST_BASE_MESON_ARGS
GST_GOOD_MESON_ARGS
FFMPEG_CONFIGURE_ARGS

https://preview.redd.it/59sovjxqcayc1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=38d79080e0c9fb9aa312000adafc2dc23f9e5bf9

Another technique that I use: At the Bash terminal while in the Proton directory, use this to fine the files you want to add GCC optimizations to:
grep -r CFLAGS | grep vkd3d

From that I see a file that I can modify: vkd3d/configure.ac: [VKD3D_CFLAGS="-Wall -pipe"

I also search with:
grep -r CFLAGS | grep O2

Just have fun with it.

Using this technique you could possibly add or remove features that you want or ones you don't use.

UPDATE: Some peoples' builds failed due to Docker issues. Mine did too on Xubuntu so I used this guide and that solved it. https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/ There are guides for other distros too. This one for Fedora: https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/fedora/ Just find your distro on the page menu to the left and follow it.
