Overwatch 2 on older laptop with 8gb of ram
I have an older laptop with i7 4700hq, gtx 850m and 8gb of ram. I used to play overwatch on it back when it was still a 6v6 game. After that I bought a new gpu for my main pc and played on it ever since.
In the meantime overwatch 2 released and now windows 10 is reaching end of life so I decided to use the laptop as a toy to test out linux. I was positively surprised by not having to fish for bluetooth and touchpad drivers and whatnot, but I figured I'd try overwatch and oooh boy...
Ram usage slowly climbs until it fils up the entire 8gb and laptop freezes. Game sounds still work for a while but I'm then kicked to login screen with game reporting it's working at 0 fps. The only way to restart is to hold down the power button.
Is there anything I can do to fix this (apart from upgrading the ram) or do I just need to accept that ow2 won't work?

Kubuntu for Gaming – Can It Handle Valorant, RDR2, Cyberpunk & More?”
I’m considering switching to Kubuntu for my gaming setup. My hardware is:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600
- GPU: AMD RX 9060 XT 16GB
- Desktop environment: Kubuntu - KDE Plasma
I usually play a mix of games: competitive titles like Valorant and Warzone, and AAA open-world games like RDR2, Cyberpunk 2077, and potentially GTA6 in the future.
I know Linux gaming has come a long way, but I’m curious about a few things:
- Compatibility & Performance: How well do these games run on Kubuntu with this hardware? Any quirks with Ryzen 5 7600 or RX 9060 XT on Linux?
- Necessary drivers/tools: Which drivers, packages, or tweaks are essential to get the best performance (Mesa, Vulkan, AMDGPU, Steam Proton, Lutris, etc.)?
- Potential pitfalls: Anything I should be aware of before committing to Linux for gaming? Like DRM issues, anti-cheat problems, or missing features.
- Future-proofing: For upcoming AAA titles like GTA6, is Linux going to be viable, or should I keep a dual-boot with Windows?
Basically, I want to know if I can have a smooth gaming experience on Kubuntu without constantly fighting compatibility issues.
Any advice, personal experiences, or guides would be super helpful!
Thanks in advance.

Best setup for Arc B580?
So I got the arc b580 12gb because I wanted something with open source drivers and it caught my curiosity (specs are in the second image)
Main tasks I do is play games like: no man sky, Detroit become human, maybe elite dangerous... Maybe in the future even some 3d modeling.
My question here is, what are the main things to follow to get the best experience, I can't find like a guide or all in one video that explains like to set it up under linux, I found only benchmarks.
Choosing an linux os over another matters? Like you can understand im running nixOS now, it is the best options? I've heard of cachy OS, Nobara, garadua....
What configuration should I apply to get a smooth experience?

Cannot launch The First Descendant
Hi all, I'm trying to play The First Descendant on Linux Mint 22.2. The game immediately closes after the initial launch screen pops up.
I've tried using both Proton Experimental and Proton 9.0.4 as listed in Proton DB. I also tried putting in the launch options
PROTON_USE_EAC_LINUX=1 gamemoderun %command% -dx12 -useallavailablecores -notexturestreaming
for both, but that didn't work either. My Linux distribution is on an ext4 format, not NTFS, so that isn't the issue.
Sometimes the game, after closing, tells me there is insufficient hardware support, but this game runs on my Windows partition (on the same computer), so that isn't it either. I checked under Driver Manager and my nvidia drivers are up to date (version 550).
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

Game doesnt work
I have been trying to download and play a pokemon fangame called xenoverse for quite some time now, except I cant make it work. If I try to download it off lutris, it returns an error (return code 23296) and says "the NVIDIA driver was unable to open 'libnvidia-glvkspirv.so.580.82.09'" despite having it downloaded and finding it in my files. If I try to download it myself and make it work, it stops downloading mid-in-game download and says:
could not allocate 8192 bytes Monitored process exited. No return code
Both me and my brother are left dumbfounded- does anyone here know what to do?

The Home County has launched on Steam today (Works on Steam Deck too)
Thanks for all the support I've received from this sub. I thought I'd let you know that my game, 'The Home County' has officially launched on Steam!
In 'The Home County' you build a village in the British countryside. Each villager has a profession that you'll see them actually do in your village. You'll tend to your villager's needs, manage their production, pursue hobbies and decorate your village. It's all inspired by Edwardian Britain, so you can choose whether to become a Lord/Lady or run your village as equals.
It launched today on Steam:

Would you recommend an MSI Thin A15 for Linux or better an Acer Nitro V?
I’m looking for a laptop to run Linux (mainly for development, some light gaming, and everyday tasks). I’m torn between two options:
MSI Thin A15
Acer Nitro V
I’d like to know:
Which one has better Linux compatibility in terms of hardware?
How do you handle NVIDIA drivers on these machines to avoid headaches?
Any good or bad experiences with these brands when running Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, etc.)?
I’ve read that NVIDIA can be tricky sometimes, so I’d love to know what distros or setups you use to minimize issues.
Thanks for any advice or experiences!

WoW opening window and closing on loop
I use Faugus Launcher via flatpak to play WoW and for what seems nothing now when trying to play Word of Warcraft the windows opens and closes, than open and closes in a really fast loop... This just happend today and worked fine yesterday...
I know things on Linux usually don't stop working out of nowhere, but I really don't know what it is happening... And I don't know how to exactly get logs or how to debug it, so if you can
I use Debian 13.1, GTX 1060 nvidia card with 550 driver. I use GNOME 48 with x11 since wayland was flickering.
I've tried reinstalling the game, updating my system (there was one system update, but I did by Gnome Software so I don't know exactly what was updated... I've also restarted the PC, THE UPDATE WAS DONE AFTER THIS PROBLEM). I've saw that some fonts was missing on WoW... Like a icon with the [] usually when a font couldn't be loaded... I've intalled MS Core fonts but still the same issue... (I've saw a really old post on a forum about something with fonts but nhe) Also I have removed all my add-ons
Edit: same thing happens in wayland

What is the latest best practice to enable HDR in Linux
So I buy HDR QD-OLED display.
- If I disable HDR, color is over saturated
- If I enable HDR in both physical display and GNOME setting, color looks normal
- I can see the slight black color difference too much so I can see clearly in a game which render dark scene and I were suppose to use flashlight to see
- The display completely turn of light for a part of black area in screen it looks like strange
There are so many outdated guide about enabling HDR on steam/proton game like setting environment variables, gamescope, etc.
What is the latest best practice for HDR?

Watchdogs 2 running with Proton extrem lag when entering and using Nethack view.
Hello, I was playing Watchdogs 2 the last few days, everything was going well until I noticed extreme lag when beeing in Nethack view which stays even when going Back to normal view. When this happens I can go back to the main menu and back into my safe and everything is back to normal, until I enter Nethack view again.
The game runs via Ubisoft Connect, which runs via Proton 9.0.4.

I am trying to play wuthering waves but the keep getting disconnected from the server.
So i have been tryna get WuWa working on my arch linux setup since yesterday, got most of it working, i am using proton-ge 10-10 through lutris, the game works and all but each time after 5-15 mins, i get booted from the server due to internet loss. While i do use a perpetual DNS and VPN i have tried to play the game with it on and off and i get the same result which leads me to belive that its not an issue from my side. Also with and without the VPN and DNS my network speed is consistent, atleast consistent enough for browsing/listening to music/installing packages etc.
Fyi i have played ZZZ on this same setup with the same conditions and it never gave me issues. I'll be grateful if someone could help me out with this issue because i liked the game during launch but due to personal reasons couldnt follow up playing it.

If I run a launcher.exe using wine/proton on Linux, and it has a virus, will my Linux get infected?
Hi friends.
I'd like to know if I can get infected by running a launcher.exe using wine/proton, for example, on Debian/Fedora/Arch.
If it's possible to get infected, is there a way to run it without getting infected, to see if the program works?
Thanks in advance.

Steam Flatpak easily crashes , especially with any overlay interactions.
Im just looking for some advice .
Basically every time i launch certain games or when the overlay is used it crashes each and every time. Guaranteed crash if i unlock and achievement .
As in the steam page will pop up and start loading along with the other windows such as friends. This issue persists across 2 installs so its obviously most likely related to NVIDIA + Wayland.
Im using an Ideapad Gaming with Nvidia hybrid graphics , on a UBlue base image rebased from standard silverblue.
Im still not very well versed when it comes to all the possible tweaking , so i was hoping maybe im missing something i can configure with flat seal or any other tip. If anyone is reading this in advance with the same issue a guaranteed fix is disabling GPU acceleration.

RDTSC patching and sitll being detected (tell me if I should move this to a different sub)
I make lil stealth VMs for malware analysis and some gaming
recently wanted to get even more into it so I started compiling stuff like qemu and edk2
just for that extra layer of stealth
I tried compiling my kernel with a rdtsc patch (kinda a headache) and it does technically work but! my VMs are now running at 0.20GHz and its pafish still detects it?
can anyone help me with this?
Im using https://github.com/WCharacter/RDTSC-KVM-Handler and just adding "svm_" where needed for it to work

Super Mario World Remastered (Godot) is a great way to play the SNES classic as coop
Context 1:
Super Mario World, known in Japan as Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4, is a 1990 platform game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). [...] The gameplay is similar to that of earlier Super Mario games; players control Mario through a series of levels in which the goal is to reach the goalpost at the end. Super Mario World introduces Yoshi, a ridable dinosaur who can eat enemies and spit some of them out as projectiles.
Context 2:
In September 2025, JHDev2006 released a well received engine re-implementation/remake for the original Super Mario Bros. and its expansions based on Godot; Super Mario Bros Remastered.
News:
It turns out, JHDev2006 has also recently released Godot based engine re-implementation/remake for Super Mario World; Super Mario World Remastered. Same as Super Mario Bros Remastered, this is not an emulation and/or reverse engineered port, it is rather a native engine re-implementation/remake that requires legitimately obtained Super Mario World rom for game assets.
Although there exists a reverse engineered port named Super Mario World - PC Port that probably offers more authentic experience due to being reverse engineered, Super Mario World Remastered offers widescreen support and most importantly local coop! We tried with 2 gamepads and this is the most laughter that I had while playing a game for a long time. Though it looks like JHDev2006 abandoned Super Mario World Remastered to focus on Super Mario Bros Remastered, Super Mario World Remastered runs on Linux natively just fine. Give it a shot. Cheers!

Steam Input alternates mappings with native Linux driver (Machenike G5 Pro)
Hi everyone,
I’m on Arch Linux and my Machenike G5 Pro controller behaves inconsistently in Steam. When Steam Input is enabled, it seems to **alternate between the native Linux mapping and the Steam Input mapping**, causing the joystick to not work properly.
When I disable Steam Input, the mapping is completely wrong. I verified that Steam Input has the correct layout for my controller.
My current GRUB line:
```
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="intel_iommu=on i915.enable_gvt=1 kvm.ignore_msrs=1 usbcore.quirks=2345:e02e:ik"
```
Has anyone experienced this? How can I make Steam Input fully control this device without interference from the native Linux driver?
