Do Proton/Wine introduce measurable/feelable latency/input lag?

10 Feb 2025 - 5:05pm

Hey guys, pretty new to linux/linux gaming (latter being mostly just my steam deck), i intend to main linux in a dual boot setup once i build a new pc mainly because win11 seems drwadful and most of my day to day use doesn't require windows anyway. Probably going for a nobara/bazzite install.

Uh, anyway, ime emulation can add noticeable amounts of input lag/latency. Proton however doesn't need to emulate hardware, rather just translate api calls and such (to my knowledge) so i was wondering if anyone has measured it or noticed any or found ways to reduce it? (i remember reading something about needing to change something to turn off some sort of anti tearing feature in the os) and something similar to AMD's antilag feature that they ended up nuking after it got people banned in online games, the linux copy was called something like latencyflex iirc?

Will be going for an All AMD setup on AM5 if that matters.

Thanks.

Oh, before i forget, is there some sort of RAMdisk equivalent for linux?

Nvidia 2060 super troubles (dota 2, marvel rivals)

10 Feb 2025 - 4:19pm

I play fairly low requirements titles, mainly WoW and Dota 2 (in between wow seasons), but recently my gainward 2060 super seems to be speedrunning to its demise recently with two main issues:

  1. NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:26:00): 79, GPU has fallen off the bus. - This has been a recurring issue that comes and goes across different drivers version and is intermittent at best (seemed to occur mostly _after_ exiting WoW and during browsing on firefox. Since I tried marvel rivals it has been happening every other match and reoccuring even seconds after a fresh bootup. I have tried changing the PSU and reseating the card. It does not appear to have made a difference. A full log of the latest crash can be found here: https://pastebin.com/bCxsxUFH

  2. Sudden slowdown in performance. Happened both in marvel rivals and dota 2. After about 30 minutes of smooth gameplay, there's a sudden drop in performance, reduction in fps (but still above 60) and severe increase in jittering. While the fps counter is still showing 80-90fps, the game feels like 30fps. The drop in performance matches the below point in nvtop where the gpu % went from a stable line to dropping.

Any ideas what the issue could be ? is my card cooked ? could my arch install be somehow borked (it's around 10 years old at this point)

Street Fighter 6 not wanting to start.

10 Feb 2025 - 2:06pm

I have recently switched over to using Linux on my gaming rig and have been able to boot up pretty much every game I play accept for Street Fighter 6. When I hit the play button, it will say launching, wait about 5 or so seconds and then go back to play. I've tried Proton 8, 9, Experimental, and GE 9-25 a long with every launch option I could find on ProtonDB and I run into the same issue.

I am using OpenSUSE TW and have a RX 6750 XT. I also made sure that my GPU and Vulkan drivers are up to date as well so I am at a loss.

Minecraft Sodium Stuttering Issue on Linux

10 Feb 2025 - 2:04pm

When I use Sodium in Minecraft, I experience stuttering. My FPS is 1500+, but I get stutters every 5 seconds. When playing Vanilla or with OptiFine, I get 900+ FPS but don’t experience any stuttering at all. Why is this happening? Does Sodium perform poorly on Linux, or is the issue on my end?

Play WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) games on Linux?

10 Feb 2025 - 1:14pm

, I recently came across a game that's made with WPF and I can't get it to run on my arch Linux. I've tried both regular wine and all Proton versions steam makes available. In both cases it doesn't Show anything of the game and doesn't throw an error.

I've tried searching around, but all I could find Was about compiling the WPF game for Linux, not launching a compiled game. Any Tips on what else I could try?

Linux GPU - what would you buy today.

10 Feb 2025 - 12:00pm

Hi All,

Thinking about getting a new GPU to replace my aging RTX 2060.

Thoughts are around getting an RTX 4070 Super, however would I be best waiting for the 50xx series, although I expect supply to be very limited this year.

Or is AMD for Linux a better choice?

Appreciate expert thoughts of this group!

Thanks,

CS2 hangs system while starting

10 Feb 2025 - 11:45am

When I try to start CS2, it hangs at an orange screen, then hangs the entire system. A black screen appears for a moment, and then the frozen desktop reappears. I just installed Linux Mint and the amdgpu-install drivers.

Random lag spikes in Hatsune Miku Project diva - fixing dx11 related lag issues in proton

10 Feb 2025 - 11:39am

Project diva is a direct x11 steam game that seems to run fine for the most part, but things can lag heavily in busier songs which makes them somewhat unplayable as a result. And this lag never seems to go away either. I don't know what is causing this lag, nor have I found a way to fix it. My hardware is more than capable enough to run this game so I know it cant be that, apart from any nvidia specific issues that might be causing this.

I have tried the GE version of proton too with and without the "DXVK_ASYNC" option. The option did help, but there was still lag, which isnt ideal for a rhythm game. I tried adding these as launch options too to make sure that proton was using the vulkan extensions "DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA" DXVK_ENABLE_PLUGINS=1 %command%" to no avail. The performance went back to being worse actually.

Anyone have a proper solution to this issue?

Heres my software and hardware info:

Operating System: Arch Linux 39.0

KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.5

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.10.0

Qt Version: 6.8.1

Kernel Version: 6.12.10-arch1-1 (64-bit)

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor

Memory: 62.7 GiB of RAM

Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2

Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.

Product Name: B450M DS3H

And games like doom eternal seem to run fine. So again, I am pretty sure it isnt my hardware at fault.

Unable to set laptop’s dGPU to max TGP with sudo nvidia-smi -pl 85. I have a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 with RTX 3050 Ti with maximum 85w TGP and with default 60w TGP

10 Feb 2025 - 11:01am

I already search a lot, but nothing helped. With DynamicBoost only goes up to 64w. Is there any workout without downgrading the driver to 525? On Windows the max TGP works well through Lenovo Vantage.
