For Windows, its always been beneficial to use older hardware for older generations of games, say TeraScale Radeon GPU's for the 16bit and 32bit PC games in 32bit Windows.

However, I find very little discussion on this topic for Linux specifically unless we are talking the Win9x era, or DOS specifically as PCem, 86Box essentially emulates the hardware necessary to run software and games.

However these fall off when it comes to 32bit era 3D PC games particularly from the XP and Vista era as the 2000s PC gaming is really the wild west in terms of installers working properly and just general compatibility, a lot of modern GPU's does not even work properly with DirectX 8 anymore which is an issue as DirectX 6, 7, 8 and 9 were very common in the 2000s.

But its been 15 years since I tried to install PC games of this era on Linux, whats the experience today, can we get away with modern hardware? Or do I need hardware of the era that makes the process less painful.

I have a b550K from gigabyte, a ryzen 5 5600gt as my cpu and i currently have a 1660 super and want to upgrade

I want something modern to play at 1080p with good consistent 60fps and ocasionally the usage of raytracing

In my use case, being on a budget, which one of those 3 i should pick knowing i will be running a gentoo system (wayland/hyprland specifically, on kernel 6.12)?

I want to switch over but I'd like to keep my save data. I played Silksong through GOG and modded it a bit. I'm aware that the file system is different in Linux (I think), so is there a way for me to bring that stuff over with my so I can continue where I left off?

Also, are Steam cloud saves created on a Windows system compatible with Bazzite?

I've really been enjoying my Switch 2 Pro Controller and wanted to use it on steam but it doesn't seem to have good support right now.

Apperently Steam added support for it in the steam beta via a USB connection but I haven't been able to get it working other than using ProCon2.

Has anyone else got it working? Or is it just a windows feature right now.

I'm on Debian 13 if thats useful

So I recently upgraded to Nvidia GeForce RXT 2080 but when it only pulled about 15 fps in intense spots in Helldivers 2 (with reasonable settings) I found out it only used about 35% of GPU even in those spots.

How can I fix this?

Specs:

Distro: Linux Mint 22.2 Cinnamon

CPU: 2x Intel Xeon E5-2689

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 (with nvidia-driver-580-open downloaded)

Answer:

So the problem is CPU bottleneck which is very understandable with my ancient Xeon. (I know I don't two of them doesn't do anything. I got it from my dad so I didn't bother with the extra one.)

Hello there,

I use a Debian 13 system. I installed Steam via the repo and added a non-steam game: This was an installer for an old windows game. The installer run smoothly. Now I want to run the actual game instead of the installer. I have tested this:

Open the Properties of the Game in Steam. There, change the target to the actual game .exe file:

/home/user/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/compatdata/<steam-ID>/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Reise nach Nordland/Game.exe

I also changed the START IN path to:

/home/user/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/compatdata/<steam-ID>/pfx/

And force the game to use Proton Experimental.

Unfortunately, the game does not launch and crashed before anything happens. Why? What is the correct way to do this?

Hi! I’m running Bazzite on my Lenovo Legion Go. Overall loving the experience but I’m missing out on one thing - custom refresh rates. The Go has a native 144hz monitor. In Bazzite, the frame limiter supports multiples of 144 (72, 48 , 36 etc) but not arbitrary refresh rates.

In Windows, I’d set custom 132hz and 120hz refresh rates and then cap at 40fps or 44 fps in certain games like Cyberpunk 2077 which can’t consistently do 48 but where I still want a relatively smooth experience.

Is there any way that I could set custom refresh rates within Bazzite? Through the frame limiter, I can only get 36 and 48 which are a little too low and a little high respectively lol.

I am a complete Linux noob, any advice would be appreciated!

Hello, I’m in a dilemma deciding which distro to use for my setup (Intel i7-11700K, Nvidia 5070 Ti, 32GB DDR4 Ram). Narrowed it down to either CachyOS or Nobara. I played with both CachyOS and Fedora 42 and had minor issues with both.

I have a hackintosh build and Fedora worked out the box but cachy I had to do a lot of manual setup to get either systemd or grub working. CachyOS also leaves me with unjustified paranoia with potential security vulnerabilities with rolling releases and AUR.

Fedora had way too much manual setup and I had to break security on flatpaks to get some apps working (was my first Linux distro so maybe I was doing something wrong). Also had issues trying to update from 42 to 43 which led me to CachyOS. Haven’t tested Nobara yet but I know it’s fedora based.

I haven’t seen any benchmarks against the two distros on YouTube or Reddit so thought I’d make a post to the community for help if they’ve experienced issues with Intel and Nvidia drivers on either. Also which would you recommend as a daily driver for someone who is technical and does app development on top of gaming.

So i finally built my first PC running on Bazzite O.S and started using my old Steam account i was using (sometimes) on my old laptop. I could run every game so far, even some Ubisoft games, but then they stopped working and i can't even launch them, tried everything, everything points to Ubisoft connect issues. Anyone here managed to solve this? I wanted to launch some Splinter Cell games and Far Cry 4 that i paid for.

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new here and I'm faced with choosing my personal Linux distribution. I'd like to use Fedora, but I see there are many Fedora-based distributions like Nobara or Bazzite that are specifically designed for gaming. My question is: is there anything that makes them particularly special? Or if I use Fedora, can I configure it the same way those gaming distributions are designed? I mean, I think they just come with pre-installed apps that can easily be downloaded on Fedora, or am I mistaken? Thanks a lot!

I've been testing the new PopOS on my laptop. I had problems installing it, which didn't happen in the last version. I had a horrible experience with Brave, I found many bugs, including the one where videos won't go fullscreen. I hate cosmic UI and its apps. I've tried running Gnome with themes, but things break, and it doesn't look good. At this point I was considering Ubuntu or Mint but I came across some more game oriented options like Bazzite, CachyOS and Nobara. I use the laptop for browsing the web, gaming and programming.

I use Windows daily and ocasionally macOS at my job. In the past I've used Ubuntu, Mint, Kali and the old version of PopOS. I was chasing that macOS feeling but with the possibility of doing some gaming, but this new PopOS version it was just not there. I even had performance problems in some games even that my laptop has an Nvidia card. What do y'all recommend me?

Hi everyone, maybe someone can help me out here. I have installed the Wargaming Game Center Launcher in PortProton, and I use the Wargaming Game Launcher to play World Of Tanks. My Linux Distro is Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon. I can play World Of Tanks just fine, but I would like to limit the fps, but so far I have not found a way how to do this. What I have tried is:
1) In PortProton in the MangoHud settings for the WG launcher I enabled an fps limit - did not work
2) Tried to edit the engine_config.xml file (here you can set an fps limit and that is the way you do it under Windows), but since that is not a regular XML file you need a special program called WoT XML File Editor to edit this file. But this program again is afaik only available under Windows, so I haven't found a way to properly edit this file under Linux.

Anyone else got an idea? Thank you in advance.

I'm deperatly needing to switch from the Vortex Beta branch to the Release branch due to a Bug that seems to have been introduced in the current Vortex Beta Build.

Sadly, i'm only able to find an option to switch from Beta to the nightly build within stl, in vortex itself the option seems to be completly locked. Is there any way to downgrade vortex / switch to the stable branch, why even is Beta the default?
