When I try to run the Deltarune Demo on my Ubuntu 20.04.1 machine, I get the error shown in the second screenshot, as opposed to it running with normal. I have the steam compatibility set to Proton Experimental.
Steam compatibility:
Error:
This exact same error occurs when I try to run this program using Lutris as well.
From stuff I've seen on ProtonDB for the game, Proton Experimental should have decent results on Ubuntu.
I have also installed wine, if that's needed for anything.
This is the specific log on terminal, something about how proton isn't supported?

I'm not exactly sure what this means.
There's also the result for the CPU info:

Please let me know if this is enough information, or if more is needed or something. I'm new to linux, so please be kind if the fix is super obvious!

SteamOS released with open source
Pretty exciting news for handheld gaming. I dont have a ROG or any other competitor devices, but I just think its awesome Valve basically gave their competition this OS for free. Have any of you installed it on one of your own handheld devices? How did it run?

What's with the bad experience with Nobara?
Recently, I switched out my Fedora installation with Nobara since Fedora wouldn't stop giving me kernel panics after each update for some reason. Not sure why it would do that, but after installing Nobara twice (I first installed it through Legacy, not UEFI. My mistake), my experience was almost flawless and I couldn't find anything wrong whatsoever, especially after the update from Nobara 41 to Nobara 42. Even though I am aware Bazzite exists, which I believe is the same thing as Nobara except it being immutable, I decided to check whether or not either or is better for my Ryzen 5 3600 rig, and I was somehow intrigued how people were having questionable experiences/opinions/etc about Nobara; however, it is not uncommon for Bazzite to share similar tendencies. i should mention it's posts are are a few months apart, so make of that what you will.
TL;DR, Given that my experience with Nobara has been pretty great so far, and I'd presume Bazzite would be just as good too, what's the kerfuffle with Nobara?

Benchmark testing Linux and Windows with RE4 Demo
I played each game until this door in the intro.
I'm a little disappointed at the average FPS loss on Linux but I was surprised to see that the 0.1 percent lows were better. Even though the Windows version was higher FPS, it felt a little worse because it stuttered more often, whereas the Linux one was buttery smooth but with less FPS.
Which version would you take?

UPDATE 5: WE RAISED MY DEAD UNCLE'S GAME FROM THE DEAD!
Yeah so the game is capable of running on Arch now. It's thanks to the help of u/darvs7. Apparently they really didn't need to do that invasive a change of the code, just update the libraries for the modern era, and update the makefile as well.
My thanks to you, darvs! It's thanks to you that this game is currently even running.
Basically, out of all the comments, darbs just posted a screenshot of them playing the game, and I asked him what he did, and he forked my repo with the changes..
Dependencies are mostly the same, so allegro4, ogg, vorbis, adime, DUMB, etc with the new inclusions of podman and fuse-overlayfs.
The working fork is available at https://github.com/darvs/Monster-Monster-Asteroid-Madness.git
just run it with -b darvs1 mmam-darvs, enter the directory, make, enter output, and run the install shell script and you can play the game by typing mmam into your console.

Dota 2 Freezing After Update
Hey all! Dota 2 got an update yeasterday, and my game is now freezing/crashing. I play for around 1 minute, then the game freezes for 10 seconds, and I get disconnected from the match with the error "Communication with the remote host has been disrupted". I tried to restart the game, no success.
After I abandoned my match, I removed all launch options and started a game with bots. No success (now the game doesn't disconnect because I'm the host, which makes me think that this is some sort of rendering problem). Reinstalled the game, no bueno. The freezes don't happen when watching matches, though.
Unsure on what to do! Any help is recommended!
I am running Steam/Dota on a Fedora Bazzite, amd GPU and CPU.

[PSA] Using Steam Flatpak and Updating Drivers
Alright, so I was having an issue with Steam not recognizing my Nvidia dGPU after updating the Nvidia drivers. Turns out you need to also run "flatpak update com.valvesoftware.Steam" every time you change your driver version and download the corresponding Steam Flatpak, which I was unaware of. Hopefully this saves someone time down the line. Have a great day!

Switch from 4080 super to 9070xt
Hi! I have a build with the following specs:
Ryzen 7 7800x3d Nvidia 4080 super 32gb RAM
im dual booting with windows on one ssd and cachyos on the other. I am interested in swapping over to linux full time for gaming and everything else. Im also by a micro center for the next day or two and they have a 9070xt for $700 (ASRock AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Steel Legend).
My question is this:
Should i sell my 4080 super and swap to the 9070xt? Will the performance on the 9070xt be better than the nerfed nvidia performance on the 4080 super?
Edit: i play in 4k on a 4k monitor with VRR

Linux Mint for gaming - should I change distros?
To start with, my hardware is full AMD - a Ryzen 5 7600 paired with RX 7700 XT, not exactly the newest tech on the scene.
Been using Mint for a couple weeks now and I'm happy with it, but I just have this constant feeling that playing games on Mint is suboptimal and that I should change distros, despite me liking every other aspect of Mint.
I hang around some Linux gaming communities and seems that my fears are often "confirmed" by some people saying that Mint isn't ideal for playing games and that one should use a distro like Arch or Fedora for the best experience. The biggest complaints I've heard about Mint when it comes to gaming are old packages and the Cinnamon desktop sometimes not playing nice despite having compositing in full screen turned off.
My PC isn't "gaming-only" so to speak, it's multi-purpose - sometimes I spend days doing work on it and sometimes all I want to do is just play some games in peace, so gaming-oriented distros like Bazzite and Nobara seem a little too much for me.
So far I'm playing games like War Thunder and Cyberpunk, both of which run well, except for Cyberpunk having the one problem of weird annoying shadow/shader artifacts in certain situations which I've yet to fix. Other than that I'm not really running into problems.
I don't really know what my question is, I guess I'm just paranoid that I've picked the wrong distro. I don't want to end up sinking too much time making myself at home when I'll probably just hop distros soon enough. If it does come to that though, I'd be perfectly happy on something like Fedora KDE, but I'd rather change distros as a final resort.

I made shell scripts that logs game playtime for non steam games
One script logs game session start time/date and the duration you played. The other calculates the total playtime for each game and the sum total and puts it into a summary log for easy viewing. Rest explained here :

Gaming/Photo editing Laptop needed
I try to buy a new laptop in the upcoming months, because the old one start to die. But I'm totally unsure, what I should get. Yes, I play games. And I know ideal would be a AMD GPU. But it seems there is nothing newer/better than a 7900M. And I have not find available laptops with this card in Germany. At least nothing with 18 or better 19“ display. If I'm right the 7900M is from 2023… is there nothing newer?
Or is nvidia now fine to use and if so, which model? I will be prepared a little bit for the next years and don't buy again in 3 years. I need at least a 18" display, because it's a desktop replacement without extra monitor. Minimum RAM should be 32GB. Besides gaming, i do a lot coding, editing photos with Darktable and some video editing.
Can someone please recommend me a future proof laptop? I will not use a desktop...

Japanese Gaming Studios and Nvidia Preference
Hi - I'm migrating to Linux and like to play games from Japanese studios. In my research, Japanese studios seems to prefer to optimize their titles with Nvidia hardware. Square Enix, Koei, Bandai, Capcom and Sega seems to release their games with Nvidia optimization.
Should this be a factor when building my gaming setup?
I want to steer away from the AMD vs Nvidia reductionist discussion. From what I gather both hardwares are heavily supported nowadays with some caveats that AMD still provides all the drivers open source where Nvidia doesn't.

We added a story to our roguelike Ludo game — did it work? Discussion
https://reddit.com/link/1ktuohw/video/3t4gm65bkl2f1/player
Hey Everyone
So, here's the wild thing: I’ve been solo-devving this weird roguelike deckbuilder that reimagines Ludo (yes, the Indian family-destroying board game 😅) as a cosmic dice war between gods.
After months of work and feedback from our earlier demo, I finally added a comic-style story intro, rebalanced the whole system (especially Spirit Cards), fixed bugs, added QoL polish... and launched a fresh demo AND trailer.
🔥 Here's the new trailer: 👉 Trailer on Youtube
🎮 Here's the updated demo on Steam:
👉 Try the Demo on Steam
I'm really curious:
- Does the trailer make you feel something?
- Would you play this game after watching it?
- And if you tried the demo, did it feel tighter and more strategic now?
I'm deep in the trenches and honestly, outside eyes would really help. Would love to hear what works, what doesn’t, and what could be cooler.
Thanks in advance, and if you enjoy dicey roguelikes with deckbuilding and a twist of Ludo madness — give it a shot and roast me gently 🔥🎲

New to Linux, can't open games using Wine/Lutris
I just got Linux Mint Mate (yay!) on my new computer. This is the first time I've used it as my main OS, and I've used Windows (ugh) until now. I just put Lutris 0.5.19 and Wine 9.0 on it. I tried to download the enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate using the GOG portal on Lutris. I did it under the GOG tab, but when I click play, the button changes to stop, and nothing ever opens. After a few seconds it goes back to "play." I've got an icon of a sort on my desktop, but that appears to be a text file, and the only thing it allowed me to use to try to open it was LibreOffice Reader.
What am I doing wrong that I need to fix so I can install and play my games?
