An update on MCMEL/Cuberry

9 Aug 2025 - 1:24pm
A short recap:

Hello again r/linux_gaming! A while ago I wrote a post here about my new launcher MCMEL (Minecraft: Multi-Edition Launcher). Since then it received a lot of updates, which mostly were more games support. But since then I added some non-Minecraft games too, which is why it can't be named like that anymore.

Rebrand:

Which is why the launcher has been rebranded. So, introducing: Cuberry! A handy Linux launcher for some of the most popular Sandbox Voxel games! It adds games like Vintage Story, Terraria (exception to "Voxel" part of the launcher, but it is considered a "Harder Minecraft in 2D" by some people), Luanti, and ClassiCube!

I also added theme support. There are 4 default themes, but all are stored in assets/ui/themes so you can modify them or create entirely new themes!

Download:

You can get to know Cuberry more and download the latest version of it from here! So go check it out if you have a while.

If you have any questions you can ask them here, on my Discord Server, or in the Github Issues but I would prefer them to be a place for bugs and ideas.

Thanks for reading!

My PC freezes while trying to open HOI IV's Kaiserredux mod (Linux Mint 22)

9 Aug 2025 - 12:58pm

I know it's so specific that it's a mod. I asked in the mod's page but I think nobody knows about Linux there. With Steam, HOI IV (native on Linux) and its other mods work but Kaiserredux doesn't. I could open this mod while on Windows. I also tried Proton Experimental.

During the loading screen, my PC freezes and audio distorts. I hardly can restart my PC. I reinstalled the mod but it didn't help.

Steam window won't show up in Ubuntu and just "blinks"

9 Aug 2025 - 10:59am

Has anyone encountered an issue with Steam where the window just blinks and never shows up for real?
My Ubuntu install has gone through multiple LTS releases already. I can't remember when it last worked but Steam did work initially. I don't really use it for gaming since I mainly game on Windows 11. But since gaming on Linux has been better these days,

I just wanted to try gaming on my Ubuntu install however this issue blocks me from doing so. I already tried reinstalling Steam and it's still the same. Perhaps there are other folders or files I should delete? Or maybe my system is just borked because of the many major upgrades? 😅

I still plan to install a gaming distro on another SSD but perhaps I can also try on my existing system until I do so.

[Help] Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH7 Undervolting

9 Aug 2025 - 10:43am

I have amd laptop with Ryzen 6600H, I have tried windows and linux, on windows it doesn't show any error but i think undervolting isn't working. I am trying to lower the temps so the laptop make less noise with same performance.

On Linux I used ryzenadj, which is a cli for controlling the processor

╰─❯ sudo ryzenadj --set-coall=-50 detected compatible ryzen_smu kernel module set_coall is rejected by SMU

This is what i get when i try to set curve optimizer on linux, and on windows I used Universal-x86-Tuning-Utility but when i tested the voltage it didn't took any effect as far i can see.

What I am doing wrong? And do i have to enable it in bios? or is there setting to set optimizer in bios, I checked advanced setting wasn't able to find any

Only non-RTX original game counts. To get best performance, make sure to run the native version without Proton with -vulkan launch option.

Can't type in games using SDL

9 Aug 2025 - 10:13am

Currently using Arch Hyprland with fcitx5. Most programs work fine, but I can't type in some native games using SDL. For example in CS2, I can't open steam overlay and type in chat, but I can move fine (wasd) in game.

Also, if I try to open steam overlay with other method (trying to open other users steam profile), it doesn't open overlay but opens it directly on the steam client.

Since there's been a lot of posts on BF6, I thought I'd share my experience for those missing out.

9 Aug 2025 - 9:59am

I dual-booted my PC just to play this game. I’m a Battlefield 4 guy, and since this was marketed as the “spiritual successor” to BF3/BF4, I’ve been comparing everything to BF4 from the moment I loaded in.

From my experience, it feels like they’ve built this game to chase launch hype by making it play more like Call of Duty, hoping to draw in CoD YouTubers. The problem is those creators — and their audiences — have no reason to stick around. CoD already does CoD better, and this approach risks the same post-launch collapse we’ve seen with every Battlefield after 4.

Compared to BF4, a lot of the core Battlefield identity is gone. Tanks don’t feel like tanks anymore, they do little damage, and aren't bulky or commanding. Snipers have shifted from long-range, methodical overwatch to close-range quickscoping. Vehicles like the Little Bird, once a skill-based map-control tool when crewed properly, can now be dropped at any height by a single guy with a Stinger (in BF4, near ground level certain weapons couldn't lock) and the maps just aren't built for a copter to have cover/air to air combat, making helicopters little more than disposable transports or kamikaze runs.

Visually BF6 is better but that detail often works against gameplay. It creates visual clutter, making it harder to spot enemies. Destruction is high, but inconsistent and not modular. Sometimes a rocket barely scratches a wall then a few rockets instantly level a building with no gradual degradation like we had in BF4.

The minimap is stuck in the bottom-left, forcing you to take your eyes off the action to check it. Aim assist is in the game, Classes aren’t locked - anyone can use any weapon - which, in my opinion, weakens the role-based gameplay that gave Battlefield depth. Weapon rates of fire are generally high across the board, supposedly for “realism,” but it just makes them feel less weighty and satisfying. Explosives are weak, one of the ways they're useful in BF4 is clearing impassable corners/creating cover but you can just tank them (weird since TTK for guns is so high)

Lastly coordination, with how quick it is, and how it's pretty much the same playstyle regardless of class I can't really see how it would make a tangible difference. That’s been my experience so far BF6 is a prettier, flashier game that’s stripped out much of the tactical depth, vehicle impact, and class identity that made Battlefield worth playing long after launch.

On the community side, The BF6 subreddit is 95% of the posts are people complaining about the constructive feedback (defending a game that doesn't need to be defended because it is even a purchase yet.) and maybe 5% is actual feedback that isn't downvoted to oblivion.

So no Dual-booting for it is not worth it unless you like CoD which is fine but then why not just wait for the next CoD

Silent Hill 2 Remake black screen

9 Aug 2025 - 6:30am

As the title suggests, everytime i try to run Silent Hill 2 remake on bazzite, the screen only shows a black screen with the game's cursor. Eventually I'll hear the menu sounds and ice even managed to get in game. But for some reason I cant seem to find a solution to the black screen problem. Tried the -dx11 command line method through steam's properties, tried -windowed to get it running in windowed mode but I still run into the same problems. Anybody have a solution to this? This is the 2nd linux distro I've tried to run this game on and the results are the same. Any help is fine. Thank you!

Incompatible dedicated servers

9 Aug 2025 - 6:18am

Ok so since windows 10 support is ending soon, i have been considering just switching over to linux for my home server pc. currently i use an intel 6700 in an old dell optiplex to host my game servers and emby media server. its honestly been great and still has been holding up for what i need it for, but it dont support windows 11 of course. I also am planning on upgrading it with some left over parts from my last gaming build (ryzen 3600+mobo, 64gb ram and rx6600) but im just waiting to grab a new psu and a good cpu cooler, maybe a new case as well as opposed to using the old one i have laying around.

Anyway, due to a recent move and things being tighter then expected, im not gonna be spending any money on extra parts for a while, potentially after windows 10 support ends. So, all this has gotten me thinking again about just throwing linux on it.

HOWEVER, my biggest hesitation is compatibility now and potentially in the future with dedicated server tools. I already know that ACC has no linux support, and the devs have already confirmed that it will never have it because something with their netcode wont allow it (their excuse not mine), and i currently run 3 different servers for that game. Apparently wine also isnt an option. I also see that games like conan exiles also dont support linux for their servers.

Now i dont play conan or any games from that studio, but that did really get me thinking, if i did switch and could get past losing my ACC servers, what else would i be losing now and in the future? I have heard that ams2 also dont support linux, or that its dodgy at best. this also makes me wonder if AC Evo will also not support running servers on linux as well, and who knows howl ong thats going to be before we find out. Ive tried looking for some kind of list, and everywhere i found only lists a couple dozen games max.

i also run or have previously a 7 days server, valheim, enshrouded, insurgency sandstorm, l4d, killing floor etc. so im kind of all over as far as genres. so its not as simple as looking for what i have now because who knows what i might end up with in the future. beamng? RedM? arma reforger? some games that aint out yet? so, for anyone who does run servers on linux, have you ran into anything you cant run? is there far more support for windows or is there just a couple outliers that are the exceptions?

Winedevice.exe crashing or getting killed

9 Aug 2025 - 5:33am

I've been gaming on Fedora. When playing games using my controller it will inevitably cut out ~10-30 minutes in. I've narrowed down this issue to one of two winedevice.exe processes getting killed or dying. I have a proton log but I don't know how to usefully read it, and when I looked I didn't see anything about winedevice getting killed or crashing. I would send the log if it wasn't ~150 megabytes. Any issues I've been able to find people having with this is some kind of memory leak continuing on after the end of the game and refusing to get killed, not it getting killed too easily. I also can't find information on how to monitor what kills a given process. Any ideas?

Secure Boot is not a Microsoft scam.

9 Aug 2025 - 4:57am

Ok, I see a LOT of comments complaining about secure boot requirements and how it’s a plan by Microsoft to prevent booting other OSes. That’s not what secure boot it, and I think a lot of let advanced users don’t even know what it does besides that you have to turn it off to use linux, so here’s some explanation and corrections.

First of all, you don’t have to turn off secure boot to use Linux, that was sorta true for a while but it’s not today. Second of all, Microsoft did not create secure boot to lock out Linux users, they did it to create a chain of trust from system boot to OS initialization. If the OS can’t trust the UEFI to be secure then its security is completely compromised. Because the only goal is preventing malware from sneaking in, UEFI systems allow you to trust any software you want, they just happen to only ship with Microsoft keys pre-installed. You as the user can enroll your own MOK and sign whatever you want, including your Linux kernel images. Or you can use a shim, which is a layer in front of your boot loader signed by Microsoft keys to load GRUB or whatever. No MS is not trying to kill Linux, they actively sign big Linux distros that they trust not to distribute malware using their keys.

If you have full disk encryption set up you should absolutely have Secure Boot enabled and a UEFI password set, especially if you use TPM LUKS.

Don’t trust me? How about the Debian wiki:

UEFI Secure Boot is not an attempt by Microsoft to lock Linux out of the PC market here; Secure Boot is a security measure to protect against malware during early system boot. Microsoft act as a Certification Authority (CA) for Secure Boot, and they will sign programs on behalf of other trusted organisations so that their programs will also run. There are certain identification requirements that organisations have to meet here, and code has to be audited for safety. But these are not too difficult to achieve. Secure Boot is also not meant to lock users out of controlling their own systems. Users can enroll extra keys into the system, allowing them to sign programs for their own systems. Many Secure Boot-enabled systems also allow users to remove the platform-provided keys altogether, forcing the firmware to only trust user-signed binaries.

9 Aug 2025 - 3:25am

I've been using nvidia-open (4060 120w laptop) for gaming and daily work for 1.5 months and I haven't felt the slightest difference between it and the proprietary one. What do you guys think?
