Migrating to NVK for light gaming

21 Mar 2025 - 7:31pm

Thinking about migrating from nvidia open driver to nvk, mainly because I want to fully use wayland and games with xwayland + nvidia flickers like hell. Does nvk present these issues? What is the performance loss currently for using nvk driver?

Switching...

21 Mar 2025 - 7:18pm

I really want to abort from Windows but i realize that i'll be missing out on some games like Valorant, thus i'm tempted on buying a 2nd SSD and just dual booting my PC so...
Questions:

  1. I know this is going to be specific, is there a easily customizeable rolling distro thats highly light weight and easy to use, most of my gaming and regular work will be on this distro so I really want to have the perfect choice if I'm going to be living with this for a while
    1. I'm Okay with something complex as long as it ain't like... arch linux lol
  2. I have a seperate 1TB drive that i can format, will this drive be accessible from both operating systems or only 1
  3. Should I just ditch dual booting, bite the bullet, and fully switch to linux, i'm still on Windows 10 and i really don't want to update but i know i'll have to

Apologies if i'm sounding rude or ranty, this is how I speak lol

Edit:
I do have some basic experience using openSUSE since i've used it to run minecraft servers before, so i'm thinking of choosing that.

RTX 4060 shows 0 watts of power consumption

21 Mar 2025 - 6:19pm

I realized that my GPU was reporting 0w of power consumption in Mangohud. I tought it was a Mangohud issue, but even in nvtop or nvidia-smi it shows a 0w consumption, so I guess its not a mangohud issue.

I had a similar issue with my cpu , but it was fixed installing zenpower, is there any fix for that issue with my GPU?

Running EA Games/Starwars Fallen Jedi

21 Mar 2025 - 4:07pm

As title states, having issues loading this game. I've tried Steam. I got it to install, but EA doesn't launch when I play the tittle. I added the EA app as a Non-Steam game and that downloaded and installed just fine but still would not load the game

Lutris.
Nothing either with this. I've read posts after posts and I can't seem to figure it out. I can run the EA app and it can see my games downloaded, but can't edit/play. I can see the game on the Steam "Runners" but I don't understand "installing" The game since it just seems to create a shortcut for steam to open the game.

I am very new to linux, I only started this month.

Linux vs Windows Benchmark GTA5 Enhanced

21 Mar 2025 - 3:58pm

Kernel 6.12, Driver 570.86. I believe this will represent the level of visuals and workload that GTA 6 will demand.

Minecraft Launcher issue

21 Mar 2025 - 3:02pm

Posting this here in-case it helps anyone else.

I've been using Curseforge to download and play modpacks for Minecraft. Recently though, after the first initial play of the modpack the Minecraft Launcher just says, "Whoops an unexpected error occurs".

I searched on this and found if you removed the webcache2 directory it will fix this when you first start it again. However, after you close the game and relaunch it has to do this again.

I'm still not sure what is causing this problem, but I found if you go into Game specific settings in the Curseforge app and have it launch minecraft instead of using the minecraft launcher, this isn't a problem anymore.

So if anyone else ran into this problem like me, I hope this helps.

Want to switch to linux for gaming, I have a ryzen 7800x3d with a 4080s, which linux is best for gaming only and running mods (vortex mod manager, mod organizer, frosty mod manager, etc.)

21 Mar 2025 - 3:02pm

I want to shift away from windows to linux for gaming, looking to minimize disruption and also need access to onedrive, dropbox, and idrive, is this something supported by linux?

Steam on Linux/Steam deck not able to install beta build of a game?

21 Mar 2025 - 2:23pm

I'm trying to help a fellow game dev test out his game. I was able to successfully download and launch the normal version of the game. I go into the game's properties and switch the beta section to preview. When I exit the menu and go back in, the value is reset to none.

I then fired up the steam deck and tried to change the option there. It changed successfully. But when I installed the game, it installed the normal one.

On my desktop, if I uninstall the game, I can see (preview) next to the library entry and I can see the beta option marked now. But whenever I install the game it's set back to the non-preview version.

I don't recall anything in Steamworks I had to set to specifically allow Proton. I have steam play enabled for all titles.

Has anyone else seen this and resolved it? Next step for me will be to reach out to Steam support. There's no fancy GPU stuff going on or anti-cheat, so I'm kinda surprised this is happening.

Wreckfest 2 running nearly out the box

21 Mar 2025 - 1:38pm

Did a quick test with Wreckfest 2.

Out the box, crashes. Changed to Proton Experimental got it rock solid stable with excellent performance.

Only minor issue is some graphical glitches (misloading textures).

Not a bad showing for an early-access title!

Machine specs as follows:

OS: Arch Linux
KERNEL: 6.14.0-rc5-273-tkg-eevdf
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (radeonsi, navi21, LLVM 19.1.7, DRM 3.61, 6.14.0-rc5-273-tkg-eevdf)
GPU DRIVER: 4.6 Mesa 25.0.1-arch1.2RAM: 32 GB
