Is anyone doing any gaming whatsoever via USB-based installs?

10 Nov 2024 - 1:29am

I'm just wondering if any of you are doing this. I know that old-school "persistent" installations couldn't load graphics drivers, but I'm assuming you can run GPU-accelerated games just fine from an SSD via a USB enclosure?

If this is possible, I am tempted to explore.

I am using Heroic Launcher and Vortex on SteamOs to mod my games. My problem is that some sounds are just missing. Had anyone the same problem? And does somebody know a fix? Thank you for helping me because I don't know really much about Linux. Thank you to anybody who can help.

Modding Sonic Adventure DX (steam version) in linux?

10 Nov 2024 - 12:09am

Hi, I'm trying to create mods for sonic adventure DX, on it's steam version, and I found a library called SonicAdventureIO which is the one used in windows and mostly all tools are for windows, the problem comes here, using wine causes chaos due to prefixes, and has a lot of crashes, as well as the MUSTHAVE .NET libraries, which won't work on blender, can someone help me or show me a guide to create mods on linux?

gamescope detaches from game process after splash screen?

9 Nov 2024 - 7:53pm

i use gamescope on labwc (wlroots) to make sure my games open on the correct monitor and create consistency in resolution etc. it generally works pretty well.

but games with splash screens, i've noticed a behavior where the splash screen opens in the nested gamescope window, but when the splash goes away so does the gamescope window. the game process is then running in the background and not visible, cuz gamescope died. i have to then manually kill the game process. games i've noticed this in are The Finals and Space Marine 2 in particular. (they run fine without gamescope, they just sometimes open on the wrong monitor and i have to adjust settings to get them on my main panel)

has anyone else run into this issue and maybe have a solution or workaround? i was looking through the gamescope docs to see if there was some sort of flag the persist the process or something, but nothing stood out to me.

thanks!

Is a 1060 Max-Q viable with Linux?

9 Nov 2024 - 7:38pm

Pretty much the title.

I have a 6+ year old Dell G7 (1060 Max-Q, i7-8750H) and I can game on it fairly comfortably on Windows. I can run most of the games I play at 60+ FPS, a lot of them at 2K resolution.

I recently switched to Linux (EndeavourOS), and I'm not getting very good performance (I tried Nine Sols, OTXO, Stardew Valley, and Dark Souls 3).

I haven't done much tweaking, but looking at protonDB all except DS3 have platinum ratings. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if I just won't be able to run games very well on my hardware.

Thanks.

Newish to linux, not getting performance I expected

9 Nov 2024 - 7:36pm

So I used to dual boot windows and Linux on separate drives on my laptop, when I played Minecraft on Linux I usually got about 20-50% more fps.

I later did away with Linux so I’ve unfamiliarized myself with it but since then I’ve built a pc, it has a 7900 xtx for the gpu, I picked up a second ssd yesterday, installed the newest version of Linux mint cinnamon, did some initial setup like checking for drivers, updating everything, the norm.

When I enter “neofetch” in my terminal, for the gpu it says “Radeon 7900 xt/ 7900” so it doesn’t think I have the 7900 xtx? (On windows it says I have the XTX) and on windows Minecraft I get about 1700 fps, on Linux I get 700.

Why could this be? Is there anything I can altar about the standard os that would improve gaming performance like how windows 11 has gaming mode?

The sole purpose for me dual booting again was because I started hosting a Minecraft server and I remembered it performed better on Linux but if this is no longer the case I feel I don’t need to dual boot and can just use the extra space for stuff on windows

Had to reboot to Windows for the first time in months last night

9 Nov 2024 - 6:32pm

So my gaming buds and I play Stellaris. I've been playing without a hitch for months. Last night, however, the network performance on Linux just tanked. It was terrible. It started out that downloading the savegame to start was slower than guys multiple states away. Then, when we did finally get to play, it was so slow the game went out of sync and we had to abandon the game. Rebooted to Windows and the problem was solved (ugh.)

I lagged out the whole game and could not figure out why, especially since we've been playing for months.

Was there a big update pushed to Steam this week that broke something? Maybe to Stellaris?

Googling around I found that last year http2 was causing issues, but I see that's disabled in my config.

$ cat .steam/steam/steam_dev.cfg
u/nClientDownloadEnableHTTP2PlatformLinux 0
u/fDownloadRateImprovementToAddAnotherConnection 1.0

Running Nobara 40, AMD Ryzen 5600x3d CPU, AMD video card.

Unity game build no longer working with Vulkan after new Steam Deck update

9 Nov 2024 - 6:32pm

I realize this isn't a typical type of post for this sub, but I was just curious if anyone else had experienced this issue.

I woke up this morning and saw that there was a new Steam Deck update. After applying this update, my Unity game build no longer works properly. It just crashes, and I was curious if anyone else was going through this.

I typically force Vulkan with all my builds (-force-vulkan), and this has allowed my game builds to run much smoother on the SD.

Splinux: Split Screen Solution for Linux

9 Nov 2024 - 6:00pm

On Windows, there are programs like Universal Split Screen and Nucleus Co-Op, that allows you to dedicate keyboard and mouse to windows, which allows people to play games split-screen. Unfortunately, they don't work on Linux, so I decided to make mine. The way it works is that it creates multiple X sessions to have multiple focused windows, and sending the respective X server the inputs. I hope everyone likes it. I'm looking forward for feedbacks.
