Steam support for non-steam games is surprisingly painless

25 Feb 2026 - 2:22am

I bought 2077 via GOG and recently wanted to do a quick game. All I need to get going was plug in the path to the exe, set the working dir "Start In" to the base path, go to Compatibility and set the runner to be "Proton 10.0-4"

Was really surprised that is about it. I was really expecting it to either just not work or to have to fight uphill.

`protontricks` doesn't work due to a bug that I don't think will ever get fixed but with `protontricks -l` you can at least get the custom "appid' so you can find the wineprefix if you later want to add some dll injection powered mods.

PS4 Controller incorrectly identified as DualSense (0x0ce6) in Game Mode - Nobara OS

25 Feb 2026 - 1:56am

Hi everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with my original DualShock 4 controller on Nobara OS (Steam Deck UI/Gamescope session).

The Problem: When I boot into Game Mode, the system identifies my DS4 as a DualSense Wireless Controller with the Hardware ID (0x054c, 0x0ce6). Because of this incorrect identification, the joystick mapping is completely broken (axes are jumping/shifting), making it unusable.

Key Details:

  • Hardware: Original Sony DS4.
  • Behavior: In Desktop Mode, it works perfectly and is identified correctly. The issue only exists in Game Mode/Gamescope.
  • Drivers: lsmod shows both hid_sony and hid_playstation are loaded.
  • What I've tried so far:
    1. Blacklisting hid_sony or hid_playstation (no luck).
    2. Using SDL_GAMECONTROLLER_IGNORE_DEVICES=0x054c/0x0ce6 in environment variables (this made the controller disappear entirely).
    3. Hard resetting the controller via the pinhole.
    4. "Setup Device Inputs" in Steam UI (the inputs are too erratic to calibrate).

It seems like the Gamescope session or Steam Input is forcing the DualSense profile onto the DS4 because of the 0x0ce6 ID. Has anyone encountered this "ID spoofing" bug on Nobara? How can I force Game Mode to treat it as a standard DS4 without breaking my actual DualSense (PS5) controller support?

Thanks for the help!

Fallout: New Vegas not recognizing GPU

25 Feb 2026 - 1:46am

I recently installed KDE Manjaro on my PC and ever since then I haven't been able to get New Vegas to recognize my 1080 as a graphics adapter, only the integrated graphics on my CPU (Ryzen 3 4100, so abysmal integrated graphics). Is this something with Linux and if so how do I fix it? I don't think this is just a Fo:NV problem either, but I couldn't get anything else to open without crashing so I think it's safe to assume everything is affected by this problem.

Zordeer version 1.7.9 and help request

25 Feb 2026 - 1:40am

I published a new version of Zordeer with some changes to improve how it works on Flatpak:

https://github.com/Kyuyrii/Zordeer/releases/tag/1.7.9

However, I don't have enough knowledge about Flatpak and Flathub, so I'm asking here if someone could help me by publishing it on Flathub.

WinBTRFS or any alternatives

25 Feb 2026 - 1:33am

So I have switched to using Fedora as my daily driver and it is going very smooth, but there are some games like Fortnite that rely on shit anticheat that can't run except on Windows. So for the time being I am dual booting.

But I am now faced with a problem. I don't want to not use BTRFS for my external SSD just because of Windows as I am planning to fade it away anyways. So is there a reliable way to use it that doesn't destroy my data? Is WinBTRFS reliable enough? Or can I for example mount it on WSL2 and share that with Windows using file sharing?

Note: I will use separate subvolumes for Fedora and Windows, but not separate partions as I need them to be dynamically resizable.

I desperately tried switching to Linux but I failed

25 Feb 2026 - 1:05am

Hello lads,

First of all my equipment

Laptop: Lenovo LOQ 15 ARP9 RTX 4060

PC: Intel CPU, AMD GPU

Gamepad: Speedlink Rait Wireless

Issues with Laptop

-tried bazzite and CachyOS, performance was not good (NVIDIA driver still shit because of non open source drivers?)

-installed POPos and thought everything is fine until closing the lid and bringing the Laptop in Energy Save Mode caused issue that he never woke up, a little issue but I don’t like it - so back to windows with my laptop :/

Issues with PC

-installed cachyOS and everything is fine until I tried playing KCD2 with my gamepad

-Gamepad works fine in other games and Steam Big Picture Mode but under no circumstances in KCD2

-tried to fix it with the help of my AI companion - nothing, absolute nothing worked (detailed description of the problem and ArchLinux Gamepad Fix Blog Post as one of the main sources for fixing the problem)

So I will go back to windows as well, a sad day for me

Maybe it’s my hardware that I own or I am too stupid to fix it. I am quite jealous about all the people say they switch to Linux for gaming and it worked fantastic.

Cheers

How to dump CSV performance data from MangoHUD on Steam Deck?

25 Feb 2026 - 12:35am

Hello!

I am a programmer at a game studio. I recently got permission to try to improve performance specifically on the Steam Deck for one of our games.

I learned SteamOS uses MangoHUD for it's performance overlay - supposedly MangoHUD supports dumping data to a raw .csv directly - this would be hugely beneficial in aggregating performance data. Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out how to get this to play nice with Steam builds/Proton.

I've discovered this video (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A7oxT6oSun0&t=300s) showing that files placed in /.config/Mangohud are supposedly loaded and respected - but I'm at a bit of a loss for how I might use that to actually enable writing the csv files.

If anyone has any experience with this sort of thing, please let me know!

Went over to Linux, it is hard...

25 Feb 2026 - 12:20am

So recently I went over from Windows 11 to Linux Mint. After my friend recommended it.
I just left Windows 11 before it became AISlop and they broke simple fundamentals, like booting your pc, or having a taskbar.

Now I try to get a non steam game running. And a telemetry addon for ETS2.

I really have a hard time with getting it to work... The telemetry addon for ETS2 is technically running, but it cannot access ETS2, because that is only running in Proton and not in Wine.
So I have to run ETS2 in wine. But because it runs smoothly in Proton I refuse it.
And I probably have to leave the community, because I cannot log my miles in ETS2.

Now I tried to get TurtleWoW running.
When I run it via the appimage, it goes full on CPU mode, because wine doesnt load my RTX3060 driver...
Tried to download and install the TurtleWoW windows version, and run it in Proton.
Webviewer missing (although it installed when I installed TurtleWoW).

Not to mention that my system does not want to go to sleep mode. I made a script with the advice of AI, to disable GPP0 from waking up the system, but after a linux system update. That was not working anymore. And I gave up on it.

It is exhausting for me. I always hated terminals. It is why I failed to advance in IT and was stuck at costumer support level.

Still I need to push through, because going back to Windows 11, no not after all the fuckups they done recently.

I just needed to vent for a bit. I am going to outsource my issues, to my friend who has patience of an angel, and knows how to find solutions.

Diablo 4 doesn't feel like it's running as good as it should. Any suggestions on what I can do?

24 Feb 2026 - 10:34pm

Hey all,

New to Linux and running Fedora 43 KDE w/ the following hardware:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 9600X 6-Core Processor
  • AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT
  • 32 GiB of DDR5 6000Hz RAM @ CL30
  • Monitor is 3440 x 1440

Trying to run D4, and it runs okay, but I don't think it's running as well as I've seen advertised (it also has a Platinum rating on protondb). I'm noticing that the GPU is not being fully utilized and on top of that the frame rate is all over the place. It remains relatively high, but it jumps around a lot between the 80s and low 100s for no apparent reason. Coming from Windows I have a relatively good idea of how this game usually performs and with the exact same settings as on Linux I'm getting up in the 140 - 160 fps range

I ran MangoHud and observed that the GPU was in the 70s - 80s for % utilization, running relatively cool so no overheating, and occasionally it would jump to 90 - 95 %. CPU was also running cool and was about 20% utilized if I recall and my ram was only about 14GB in use and nothing appeared to be struggling to run.

I figured I'd try using FSR to see what kind of performance bump I'd get and there was literally no performance bump at all, so I do think something is up, but I'm not quite sure what.

When I first noticed this, the only launch options I had on for D4 were to enable HDR which are: PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1

When I went on proton db I noticed everyone basically saying that it ran flawlessly and of the most recent entries I did see two that caught my eye. One that also recommended the following launch parameters:

PROTON_LOCAL_SHADER_CACHE=1 PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 PROTON_FSR4_RDNA3_UPGRADE=1 PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 ENABLE_LAYER_MESA_ANTI_LAG=1PROTON_LOCAL_SHADER_CACHE=1 PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 PROTON_FSR4_RDNA3_UPGRADE=1 PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 ENABLE_LAYER_MESA_ANTI_LAG=1

I only enabled the ones that were relevant to me so in the end I had the following enabled:

ENABLE_LAYER_MESA_ANTI_LAG=1 PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 PROTON_LOCAL_SHADER_CACHE=1 PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1

No change in how the game was running.

I then saw another user recommend a dxvk.conf file to set the limit of the VRAM just below the maximum available VRAM which I did, but that also didn't do anything. This was apparently to fix a VRAM leak the game has which causes it to crash in an hour though.

Moving to Linux?

24 Feb 2026 - 9:28pm

Hi guys. I'm a Windows user, and honestly the performance and everything on this OS is going worse and worse. My genuine question is, should I go to Linux, I use the pc for gaming and studying, nothing more than that. I have some idea of linux, but nothing more than the basics. Thank you

Just another post praising how great Proton is (Steam Next Fest)

24 Feb 2026 - 9:03pm

Sometimes we take Proton for granted. I’m testing a lot of games during Steam Next Fest, and now I don’t even worry about whether the game will work, everything just works, to the point that I even forget we’re running games through a compatibility layer. Proton is so mature now that we forget it even exists, and I think that was Valve’s goal from the beginning. What an amazing piece of software, and again congratulations to everyone involved.

Periodic FPS Drops to 5–10 FPS in CS2 on CachyOS (Hybrid GPU?) – NVIDIA + Intel both show 0% usage during drops

24 Feb 2026 - 8:59pm

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1rarr0k/severe_fps_drops_in_cs2_on_cachyos_after_10/

Hey everyone,

I’m experiencing very strange periodic FPS drops in CS2 on CachyOS and I’m running out of ideas.

System:

OS: CachyOS

KDE Plasma 6 (Wayland & X11 tested – same issue)

Kernel: 6.19.3-2-cachyos

CPU: i9-13900H

GPU: RTX 4070 Laptop + Intel Iris Xe (hybrid)

RAM: 32 GB

Laptop: Dell XPS 15 9530

The issue:

The game starts perfectly fine at ~75 FPS, FPS limit set

After about 10 minutes:

FPS suddenly drops to 5–10 FPS

This lasts around 5–10 seconds

Then performance fully recovers

The pattern repeats periodically

What I noticed (important):

Using LACT and MangoHUD during gameplay:

The drops start exactly when the Intel iGPU begins throttling

At that moment, NVIDIA usage drops to 0%

MangoHUD also reports 0% usage on the other GPU

It almost looks like a GPU context reset or render offload interruption

Temps are fine.

No obvious thermal throttling on the NVIDIA GPU.

CPU governor is set to performance.

BIOS power settings look normal.

Launch options currently:

gamemoderun MANGOHUD=1 __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command% -freq 75 +fps_max 74

I also tested:

Wayland and X11

proton-cachyos

Updated NVIDIA drivers

Internal display only

No change.

My Questions:

Could this be a PRIME render offload issue where the Vulkan context resets when the Intel iGPU changes power state?

Since CS2 is Vulkan-based, should I also be forcing: __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only to prevent fallback behavior?

Could this be related to Intel Package Power Limits (PL1/PL2) being hit after ~10 minutes, causing a short power clamp that interrupts GPU rendering?

Has anyone with a Dell XPS 15 9530 experienced aggressive DPTF / EC power cycling under Linux?

Would disabling Hybrid Graphics in BIOS (dGPU-only mode) likely eliminate this if it’s a MUX / power budget issue?

Is it possible that when the Intel iGPU enters a deep power state, PRIME briefly loses the render target, causing both GPUs to show 0% usage?

Has anyone tested blacklisting i915 on similar hybrid systems to see if that stabilizes Vulkan under heavy load?

At this point it really looks less like a classic GPU throttle and more like some kind of hybrid graphics power event or power budget clamp.

Any ideas or similar experiences would be hugely appreciated 🙏

[Release] x3d-toggle: Easily switch between Gaming (vCache) and Compute (Frequency) modes on Ryzen 9 X3D Chips

24 Feb 2026 - 8:54pm

If you're running a 7950X3D or 9950X3D on Linux, you know the struggle: sometimes the scheduler puts your game on the frequency CCD or your LLM on the vCache CCD.

I got tired of digging through the terminal to echo values into sysfs, so I built x3d-toggle. It's a lightweight utility/daemon that gives you a simple GUI to flip your CPU's priority mode instantly.

What it does:

  • Rabbit Mode: Forces priority to CCD0 (vCache). Perfect for Cyberpunk 2077 or Stellaris.
  • Cheetah Mode: Forces priority to CCD1 (High Frequency). Best for local LLMs (llama.cpp/ROCm) and heavy compilation.
  • Auto Mode: Lets the kernel take the wheel when you're just browsing.

Why use this? Unlike Windows, which relies heavily on the Xbox Game Bar, this gives you direct, manual control over the amd-x3d-vcache driver. No bloat, just a simple kdialog interface and a background daemon.

Installation (Arch/Garuda):

Bash

git clone https://github.com/pyrotiger/x3d-toggle.git cd x3d-toggle makepkg -si

Github Repo:https://github.com/pyrotiger/x3d-toggle

Check it out and let me know how it performs on your specific rig.
