Recently got Linux Mint and got around to trying out some games. All the games I've tried have this dithering effect, otherwise everything runs fine.
What does this mean
Old Games Running horrible On Linux
I was testing Black ops 2 (plutonium) on linux and i saw that i only got 90 fps with a rx5700 xt and ryzen 5 3600 and then testing in on widnows i got 600fps on same settings The same with other game (spec ops the line) getting unstable stutterting at 30fps just to run 400fps on windows After tweaks The hell im doing wrong

Microsoft wants Windows to Lose Marketshare to Linux
Let me be clear, this post is in no way intended to discourage the use of Linux or recommendations for others to switch. Additionally, this is at best an educated guess borne of my own reasoning.
Consider for a moment, what does Microsoft lose if a percentage of it's Windows 10 user base with "incompatible" hardware move to Linux? I propose nearly nothing, and that they, instead, gain a distinct advantage.
Firstly, as Microsoft has offered free upgrades to existing Windows users for their past couple of releases, they make no money off those who already purchased a license to a prior release. Therefore, it is beyond a shadow of a doubt, in regards to my mind at least, that the "incompatible" hardware is primarily a thinly veiled ploy to get users to purchase new pre-built hardware so that pre-built computer vendors have to spend more on Windows licensing. But to that end, there's another side effect; a percentage of the bold or tech savvy will leave the Windows platform instead of purchasing new hardware or circumventing Microsoft's restrictions. At first glance, and in combination with the PR hit they suffered, it seems entirely moronic to risk the safety of their brand and presence, however I would argue that there is a significant advantage to upping the Linux marketshare -- in short, anti-trust. In view of the recent litigation faced by Google and Facebook over this very fault, I believe that Microsoft, likely, planned for Linux to become more prevalent as a result of their actions, so that they may avoid triggering a monopoly-based lawsuit. Furthermore, there likely will be a large number of secondary devices running Linux that are not a user's primary device, if only so that it remains usable to the user. If they can make it appear like they've genuine competition, whether it's from users' primary device or not, they may prevail in avoiding this round of big tech litigation.
Unfortunately in this view, the only one hurt by Microsoft's decision to cull support for millions of devices (that would otherwise run the OS without issue) is, of course, only the consumer. As well as creating what will effectively be e-waste in the process, as most are not savvy or care enough to install another operating system.
TL;DR, I believe Microsoft intended to push some users to Linux so that they can avoid anti-trust litigation.

Setting up Sunshine/Moonlight
Hi,
I recently switched to Linux Mint from Windows and am trying to set up Sunshine/Moonlight to stream my PC from my steam deck. I've already got WOL enabled, and it works perfectly. Right up until I click play on desktop. My PC says it is streaming with Sunshine for about 10 seconds, then says it is paused. Meanwhile, on my steam deck, I get a black screen for about 10 seconds before getting kicked out, with the message "Connection terminated Error code: -1"
I have allowed all the necessary ports through my firewall and my router is still set up from when I was streaming my windows machine. I was looking on https://docs.lizardbyte.dev/projects/sunshine/latest/md_docs_2getting__started.html#kms-capture and i believe this is my issue.. but I'm a noobie and can't figure out how to run the commands to enable KMS capture and/or X11 capture. Both were giving me error messages, and now do nothing at all... Presumably because the (which sunshine) parameter is supposed to be something else?
Maybe I'm off base entirely, but I can't seem to figure this out. Any ideas?

Thinkpad T530 Intel 4000 Proton gaming
Hey trying to run C&C Remastered and Magic The Gathering Arena on my Linux Mint T530.
I have both installed through Steamand Proton enabled to run all other titles.
When I start either game I get an initial loading and then either a crash or nothing. C&C will say it's writing a crash report but never finished, while Arena just does nothing.
Appreciate any advice!

🎮 Open Game Launcher
🗒️ Notes on AI Usage
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This entire project idea, structure, and concept come from my own mind and vision.
However, since I’m not a developer and English isn’t my first language, I used artificial intelligence (ChatGPT) to help me structure, write clearly, and make this README easier to understand for everyone.
> The idea, logic, design, and ambition are 100 percent mine, not from AI.
I’m saying this because I’ve already been insulted or discredited by others for using AI tools — even though my only goal is to share an ambitious and inclusive project that could benefit the entire Linux and gaming community.
Please understand: AI helped me express my idea — it didn’t invent it.
Let’s focus on the project, not on the tools used to explain it.
---
Hello, I'm here to tell you about one of my ideas, but since I'm unable to code, I'll share it with you here. Here's my project.
Universal platform to launch all your Windows games on Linux
> Play all your games, even the most demanding or protected by anti-cheat, without ever leaving Linux.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🧭 Objective
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Create an all-in-one Linux application that lets you play all Windows games, including the most complex ones, thanks to an intelligent launcher that can automatically choose between several execution modes:
- Ultra-light Windows VM with GPU passthrough
- Proton / Wine
- Automatic selection
- Raw launch (manual, no compatibility layer)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🔧 Main Features
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Execution Modes (selectable per game):
- Container
→ Ultra-light Windows-based container, containing only the essential files for the game (no telemetry, no unnecessary apps).
Ideal for online games with anti-cheat (Fortnite, Warzone...).
- Also creates an optimized Windows VM more complete, usable as a minimal Windows workstation for running other Windows apps if needed
- VMs have access to USB ports, network, storage, and peripherals, anticipating extended use (USB keys, secure devices, etc.)
- VMs automatically shut down when the launcher closes, unless the user enables the "keep VMs running" option
- Option to minimize instead of closing to keep the launcher running in the background
- Proton / Wine
→ Best performance for compatible games
- Automatic Mode
→ The system selects the optimal mode based on a community database or system detection
- Raw Installation
→ The game is installed and launched directly, without any intermediate layer
For native Linux games or manual configurations (portable Wine, scripts, etc.)
Users can switch modes anytime in the game settings
- Game Addition:
- Connect to official launchers: Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, Rockstar, GOG, EA, Amazon, etc.
- Manual addition: .exe, .sh, local folder, WinePrefix, or custom script
- Container Option:
If selected, the launcher automatically creates a dedicated Windows container for the chosen game, containing:
- The game
- The game launcher
- Essential Windows files for proper functioning, minimized as much as possible
- User Interface:
- Design inspired by Heroic Games Launcher
- Sidebar providing access to:
- Game library
- Global, per-launcher, and per-game settings
- Webstores to buy or link your games
- Environment configuration editor (VM / Proton / script)
- VM and Launcher Management:
- VMs automatically close when the launcher exits, except if the user enables the option to keep them running
- Option to minimize the launcher instead of fully closing it
- Plugin System:
To make Open Game Launcher flexible and extensible, a plugin architecture will be integrated, allowing:
- Developers to add missing or specific features
- Users to customize or modify their experience (support new launchers, tweak execution settings, integrations)
- Easy sharing and downloading of plugins via a community-integrated marketplace
This modularity ensures rapid evolution and adaptation to community needs without waiting for official updates
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🖥️ Technologies Considered
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Module | Technology |
| ------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| VM & Hypervisor | QEMU / KVM / libvirt |
| GPU Passthrough | VFIO / IOMMU |
| GUI Framework | Tauri (Rust + Web) or Electron|
| Proton / Wine | Proton, Wine, DXVK, VKD3D |
| Launcher Auth | Embedded browser + Web APIs |
| Manual Addition | .exe, .sh, YAML, WinePrefix |
| Plugins | Modular system, extensible API, marketplace |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🛡️ Security & Performance
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Complete isolation per dedicated environment (VM = sandbox)
- Temporary Windows account generated automatically
- Dynamic warnings:
- KVM disabled
- Insufficient hardware or resources
- Secure storage of accounts and passwords
- Controlled sandbox for each execution
- Full VM access to USB ports, network, peripherals (configurable)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
📂 Manual Addition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Add unlisted games via:
- .exe file
- Local folder
- Custom script (launch.sh)
- Compatible with:
- Proton
- VM
- Raw mode
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🚀 Why This Matters
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Removes the limitations of Linux gaming
- Enables playing games with anti-cheat without Windows dual boot
- Gives full control to users
- Centralizes all launchers in a single interface
- Encourages adoption of Linux as the primary gaming OS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🔭 Future Vision
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Community-driven compatibility database and feedback
- Support for Linux consoles (Steam Deck, ChimeraOS, etc.)
- Hybrid cloud/local mode: remote VM, local GPU
- Marketplace for ready-to-use configurations
- Advanced scripting and plugin system
- Developer mode for custom profiles
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🧪 Technical Roadmap (MVP → V1)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows VM prototype + GPU passthrough
Raw launch + manual game addition
Heroic-like UI (Tauri / Electron)
Proton / Wine support
Multi-launcher authentication
Automatic selection system
Custom profiles
Plugin system implementation
Open source launch (GitHub / GitLab)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🧠 What It Changes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Before (Linux Gaming) | With Open Game Launcher |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Limited to Proton | All games playable (100 percent) |
| Anti-cheat blockers | Compatibility via dedicated VM |
| Fragmented interfaces | Centralized application |
| Poor launcher support | Native integration |
| Manual configuration | Four simple, configurable modes|
| Need Windows dual boot | Windows used as container |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
💬 Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Open Game Launcher is:
- The ultimate bridge between Linux and Windows gaming
- A free and unified interface for all your games
- An open, flexible, and secure vision
- A modular, community-driven, and revolutionary project

Trailmakers crashing when attempting to upload creation to the steam workshop
As said in the title, the game Trailmakers crashes each time I try to upload creations to the workshop. As soon as I press the button the game closes. Perhaps it's because it cannot access the workshop from proton/wine. I kinda need this to work if I want to bring anything of value to public servers so people don't steal my creations and upload them for point farming.

Enforcing DLSS4 MFG and Transformer Presets via Steam
Hey all,
Using latest CachyOS with RTX 5000 GPU. So far I've been able to run native DLSS4 games with transformer DLSS model and multi frame generation without issues.
But when it comes to games that can support DLSS4 features through Nvidia App, things get iffy. No matter what commands I type in the Steam Launch parameters, my games never have 3x or 4x multi frame generation. So far I tried Stalker 2 and Oblivion Remastered.
Can you help me?

Best Linux distro for gaming
I'm looking at breaking away from Windows as painlessly as possible, but looking for a unicorn of a distro in terms of one that is decent for gaming (like most games supported). It's been a minute since I've used Linux, and the gaming support wasn't great back in 2015 on Mint. Is my best bet just dual-booting (again- last time I did it, it wasn't fun) or should I just stick to Windows till the distro I'm looking for comes along?

What GPU should I upgrade to?
Hello, new here.
I am currently using a dual-boot setup in my machine with CachyOS + Windows (each on a separate SSD).
I use Windows for some work-exclusive stuff and gaming and my CachyOS installation for daily general use. I want to fully transition to Linux gaming and leave Windows gaming for when absolutely necessary only.
I mostly play a combination of old game and newer AAA titles which I like to play on high/ultra graphic settings when possible.
Right now I have an RXT 3070 GPU which works very well for my general use. However, recently I've had the financial means and have been wanting to upgrade my GPU.
I understand AMD is easier on Linux in general compared to Nvidia so I thought maybe switching over.
I'd like to ask for some recommendations for a new GPU that could provide a substantial upgrade from what I have right now that sits around the $1,000 USD and works well on both Windows and Linux, be it AMD or Nvidia.
I've already seen some recommendations online but not enough to have a clear idea of what could work for me.
I also should mention in advance that I can't get any RTX 5000 series since my motherboard only has PCIe 4.0 ports.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In the spirit of all the new Linux user posts...
Let me regale you with a tape of me nearly losing my goddamn mind trying to get games working reliably on Linux after switching a couple days ago.
So feeling a burst of inspiration the other day and sick of another windows driver bug, I said screw it I'm going Linux. I have it on my old T420 laptop and was feeling confident, however had never switched due to being a quite avid gamer and worried about incompatibilities.
So I installed Linux Mint, and ran into my first issue. I thought that since I had the games installed on a secondary SSD, I was good to point a fresh steam install to the old hard drive and pick up the old games. That SEEMED to work, until I tried to launch a game and nothing would happen. More furious googling resulted in realizing the NTFS file structure of the old drive was the likely culprit. No problem, I have fast internet. I formatted , reinstalled the games, cleared steam download cache, Budda boom Budda bing things are working! I installed GE proton for future compatibility, tried to enable VRR in amdgpu.conf and shut down for the night feeling pretty good.
Next day, nothing launches. I disabled VRR, look at logs however the game would all say they are running but not launching at all. I restarted, reinstalled the game, nothing. Finally I gave up for a bit and listened to some music, but noticed it said my DAC was connected but no audio was coming out. A quick off and on again fixed that issue. I installed a newer version of GE proton, adjusted some launch parameters and it was working again! I figured it was some faulty launch parameters and went to bed again.
The following morning, try to test a game launch and again and it's the same problem. Steam launches the game, says it is running and nothing happens. At this point I'm losing it, I cannot figure what is going wrong. I switched from mint to cachyos, still buggy. I reformatted and reinstalled my games, and still nothing. I have my head on my desk baffled.
I then decided to relax with some music, and checked that the output was the correct device, my E10k DAC. There was no audio output again... Huh. I reset the DAC and audio is working. I think to myself "no way it's related" and sure enough the game launches FLAWLESSLY. I'm guessing it was trying to hook into the audio and with the bug it would just cause a crash. Native Linux games would launch but way slower than normally. I am going home tonight to confirm that it was indeed the issue.
Now I have to figure out why my audio is getting recognized but won't output until a reset, but at least I have somewhere to start! That was an interesting journey. I just thought I would pass on a story about some self troubleshooting, as usually people come here looking for answers!

Can't run stretched res above 75hz
I'm a new linux user still getting the gist of everything right now. At the moment I'm trying to play CS2 4:3 but for some reason I cannot run above 144hz native.
Some solutions I have tried is running gamescope but gamescope doesnt even let it launch, it'll say launching then cloud then it'll cancel itself. Not sure why exactly but odd.
My specs:
Linux Mint(KDE Plasma)22.01
RTX 4060ti
Ryzen 5 7600
32 gb ram

Skyrim Modding: Reqtificator
Can't seem to make Skyrim Requiem work as Reqtificator doesn't seem to detect Requiem.esp (via MO2) or Skyrim at all (via Limo). I've been trying to make it work for past few hours and I rather keep all of my hair and ask if anyone actually made it work (with new non jar Reqtificator)

volt-gui 0.1 Released :)
Well, I come to share my latest GitHub project for Linux gamers: volt-gui, a GUI program to manage many system settings that will hopefully help with your FPS.
Originally, it was just a GUI program that created a bash script to export environment variables and their desired values, which were set through the UI. Example of that in the new UI:
It was initially just for my friends, to help them switch from Windows to Linux without scaring them with environment variables on day one or making them read NVIDIA/Mesa documentation. But then I decided to add features like CPU governor control, then support for managing SCX schedulers like rusty or lavd. At that point, I decided to open-source the project as it was becoming more than just a onetrick pony.
Now you can do many things with it, including profile management, and it's quite easy to add more settings if we find something interesting to include. It has helped improve my game performance, the most impactful changes being the kernel settings and SCX CPU schedulers.
It's created using Python and PySide6. Please keep in mind this is my first serious PySide6 project, so it's more than probable that I'm doing something silly somewhere.
All that being said, its first release is out. It probably has some bugs (I use it daily myself), but hopefully nothing too serious. This program has helped me achieve at least stable 40 FPS in Metal Gear Solid V TPP vs the unstable 30-35 i had before, so I hope it helps y'all too.
Contributions are very welcome. Cheers, and GLHF.
