Sims 2 Graphics Rules Maker on Linux Wine?

15 Nov 2024 - 10:48pm

I've installed the Sims 2 on Linux through Wine, using the Lutris install script for osab's starter pack. The Graphics Rules Maker fails to launch during the installation process, and it also fails to launch if I try to run it manually through Wine. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Dual booting is amazing!

15 Nov 2024 - 9:54pm

Got an M.2 PCIe adapter and installed my M.2 SSD that i did not have space for. Having both a Linux system and a windows system is really nice. I can test and take my time on Linux while also having a stable windows platform for gaming games not compatible with Linux.

Bundling a single game with an emulator as an AppImage?

15 Nov 2024 - 8:47pm

For convenience reasons I want to bundle a switch nsp game with the final yuzu appimage that released, to make something that feels like a sort of naitive game. Basically an appimage that immediately runs the single game in the emulator without having to set up the emulator or even interact with it. And it saves any changes that normally would go in the yuzu home directory in a directory named after the single game it’s bundled with.

Anyway I know this is possible, but I just can’t get it to work.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Game is ACNH by the way, and yes I own my own switch and copy of the game too.

Good mod manager?

15 Nov 2024 - 8:34pm

Anyone know of a Linux native mod manager for Skyrim/fallout? I've been using mod manager 2 through a script I found but I don't love the experience.

Weird Steam/Firefox Issue That Makes No Sense (to me)

15 Nov 2024 - 8:16pm

hello my fellow gamers on the wonderous gaming of linux variety subreddit

it appears that whenever i start firefox and steam at the same time, Steam hangs until it gives up on loading the webhelper, or firefox loads. Why is this happening? Also my firefox's load times are yet again abysmal with no clear reasoning. Some assistance would be appreciated

(This happens on both Arch and Artix)

(To be clear, this did NOT happen even ONE TIME on Fedora or Pop!_OS.)

DDO + DungeonHelper on Linux (via Proton?)

15 Nov 2024 - 8:05pm

Hello there!

I'm been very happy with Steam Proton on my Ubuntu 24.04 (and previous releases) for a very long time. I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons Online there also without a problem, usually by bypassing all bells and whistles and just calling

$STEAM_PATH/steamapps/common/Proton\ 8.0/proton run <path to exec>

instead. Works wonders. I have however heard about this add-on (it is legal and accepted by the developers) for DDO called DungeonHelper:

https://dungeonhelper.com/

I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, but it should be started <before> DDO and somehow draws data from the client. It is supposed to be in the systray doing this and... well, it doesn't work at all. It just automatically terminates itself without showing anything when started with Proton. Even if it showed "something", I wonder if it would be able to connect to the client if I'd start it with a different "proton run" call.

I wonder if there is a way to get these two to work together, or if anyone ever tried anything similar with Proton or wine in general. I'd be happy to try things out!

Just wanted to rant about my journey trying to game on linux so far

15 Nov 2024 - 7:58pm

I've been using linux for the past 2 months. I've been loving it, but had so many problems when it came to game involving lutris... I swear I've tried every single solution I could find on wikis or on the web, NOTHING MADE LUTRIS WORK. I've even moved through ubuntu to nobara, and finally, I've settled in mint but lutris gave me different errors in all of these distros (and even if I could fix them, the games simply wouldn't launch). I was ready to give up and go back to windows when I found out about bottles, and holy crap, it worked out of the box. I was speechless. Almost every game/repack I've tried so far in bottles worked out of the box, and if it didn't, I just needed to install some kind of dependency on the app. The errors involving Lutris probably were caused by some mistake I've made but I completely gave up on trying to make it work. Also, I've been pretty pretty happy with bottles so far :)

CS2 performance issues

15 Nov 2024 - 7:33pm

Hello everyone :)

Today I switched from Windows 10 to Ubuntu 24 because I always wanted to try Linux as my main OS. I'm not a complete beginner when it comes to Linux because my servers run on it, so I have to use it from time to time, but I'm also not really experienced and have to google a lot.

One thing that has always held me back from using Linux as my main OS is that most of my PC usage is programming and gaming, and most of the games I play are not written for Linux.

After installing Ubuntu and the drivers for my GPU I tried to run CS2, but unfortunately I experienced much worse performance than on Windows. On Windows I had 140+ fps consistently on high settings, now I have to go to medium settings and still have small lags. It doesn't really feel smooth, I get tiny lags and my input feels a bit delayed.

I did a bit of troubleshooting myself, I heard that I should use -vulkan in the start options, but that turned all player models blue. I also made sure that resizable BAR was enabled.

I also tried to play an older MMO I occasionally play, with wine, but I couldn't change the game settings because the settings window wouldn't open as it should.

What are your own experiences with gaming on Linux, especially when it comes to CS2, and do you have any suggestions for me?) I really want to stick with Linux this time, and dual-booting isn't an option for me because it will probably result in me sticking with Windows.

Have a great day!

How can I explain a friend of mine how Wine works?

15 Nov 2024 - 7:11pm

He thinks Wine is an emulator, and I explain that Wine doesn't emulate an OS, but it uses the an implementation of the Windows libraries and translates those instructions to ones that Linux understands, but he still thinks that is emulation, is there a better way to explain how Wine and compatibility layers in general works to him and why that is not emulation?

Some games think my 8bitdo Ultimate C wired controller right stick is the triggers

15 Nov 2024 - 5:05pm

I have an 8bitdo Ultimate C wired controller that's been working fine on Debian with just about every program I've used it for. Recently I installed Heroic Games Launcher, but every game I play from there (but not the launcher itself) seem to think right stick down is RT and right stick up is LT. Nothing seems to trigger the right stick movement, although pressing it down as a button still works. I thought I'd just use AntiMicroX to remap the controller to the correct keyboard controls for the game, however AntiMicroX also has the same problem. I then added the game to Steam and launched it from there. Exact same problem. Every other program that I've tried works just fine, it's just AntiMicroX and games from Heroic that have this problem. All the games I have on Heroic are from Epic, in case that makes any difference.
