Huge FPS drop in linux
Recently i just decided to try linux, Linux mint XFCE to be exact, and it all going okay, untill i downloaded minecraft, i saw HUGE fps drop in linux, now ik my pc specs arent the problem, even tho i have shitty pc, but it doesnt matter because in windows 10, I used to get 400 fps, in 1.8.9 with optifine, and in linux its around 100 and 70 (1.8.9) in some areas, now i used to lock my fps to like 120 in windows, and anything above 60 fps was fine for me, But in linux it just doesnt feel like 100 fps at all, its not smooth, idk how to explain this but its just not 60 fps it stutters even tho there arent any drops, kinda like when you record on a shitty pc, matter fact its actually than when i recorded my gameplay in windows and yes i tried to tweak my settings as much as possible, But its just isnt working, This is odd because i hear people say that they get a huge fps boost in linux, so idk, I also went to Driver manager in settings, and it says no driver needs to be updated, im wondering is there any app like driver booster for linux? cause if this doesnt workout i might have to switch back to windows.

Fullscreen BPM lag
Hey there folks! I've been having this issue with steam for awhile now where in BPM the application lags if i go into fullscreen mode on a secondary monitor, the rest of the system is perfectly fine but the performance of BPM is very poor

GTA Online & BattlEye
Contrary to the well spun myth that GTA Online doesn't work on Linux since the BattlEye update because Rockstar forgot to tick a box (if you believe that I have bridge in Liberty City to sell you), BattlEye does in fact work.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/Game-specific_troubleshooting#Grand_Theft_Auto_V
For those who are unfamiliar, there are various fixes posted online that include setting the PROTON_BATTLEYE_RUNTIME environment variable. This fix alone is not enough for most systems, you must also disable split lock mitigation. Some users may have done this for other games already, and maybe Valve has disabled this on SteamDeck, hence the conflicting reports on ProtonDB.
I discovered this by checking the kernel log. That this article garnered 3.2k upvotes, made the front page of Reddit and informed countless gamer news articles, before anyone even checked kernel logs, is a disgrace to the Linux community. You are responsible for the maintenance of your own system.
Hope this helps some disgruntled fans, and just in time for the December update!

No GPU acceleration with flatpak steam L:(
Hi,
I'm looking for help to get my GPU running with steam games on windows.
My issue is, that all games are using only CPU:
It is the same for all games that I've tested, none are using GPU. So I assume it's my config and not the game.
My environment:
steam is installed with flatpak (same situation if installed directly):
my host detects the card and uses the same driver version
according to glx info the nvidia is detected on host and in flatpak
flatpak:
torsten@whitestar:~$ flatpak run app/org.freedesktop.Platform.GlxInfo/x86_64/23.08|grep -i render

over 1 Billion of Potential
Steam account is over 1 billion
microsoft windows runs on 1.6 billion of active devices.
If Valve successfully release a Linux distro with Gaming focused, then its pretty much game over for microsoft.

I finally setup my linux for gaming. Steam+proton but also wine: for old games like NFS of golden era black box...
Quick aparte: the only reason to me to have Windows - my addiction to LoL... But I'm looking for stopping LoL, even if it's not for now or near future yet.
I'm using intensively Linux since about october 2023, mainly because I started studies in computer science. But my Linux experience starts way-way earlier, around mid-2010s and since ever from I've been very attentive to gaming on Linux. That way I was hyped when proton came out and was kinda inpatient to test it out.
Fast-forward to this night, I've decided to have my few recent games (Snowrunner and Satisfactory, to be exactly; Warframe and few others there and there; NFS and few others outside of Steam) running smoothly on Linux.
Outside-Steam-Games were kinda fast to work out: I've already the tech with wine (I had to install MS office suite 2003 few weeks ago) - I just need the installation executable, that I run with `wine /path/to/exe`, then either reboot or `alt + f2` followed by `r` (I'm using ubuntu 22.04LTS) - it will restart GUI of the system, as I understood, and implement the new created shortcuts for installed exe.
Meanwhile, Steam-games were pain in ass... I've been on it already for few months, but either it was hard drive error (dual-boot and fast-startup, iykyk, but also few others inconveniences by my personal habits), or the games would just not start at all, or even if they start - they run at 10-11 fps at best (on gaming setup). Here's the list of problems that I had, sorted by when I solved them (the first are the first to be solved):
1. Using `Nouveau` as NVIDIA driver is bad or even impossible for gaming. I suspect it to be the origin of not-launching-games in Steam.
`Additional Drivers` application in Ubuntu's menu tells the recommended one driver for my NVIDIA is installed, yet `nvidia-smi` was either non-installed or not detecting NVIDIA driver.
`sudo apt install nvidia-driver-550` is NOT the driver to install: you missing the dkms feature.
`sudo apt install nvidia-driver-550 dkms` + `sudo dkms install -m nvidia -v 550` + reboot and you are likely good to go.
Optional: either start the steam via `DRI_PRIME=1 steam` or add to in-steam launcher parameters `DRI_PRIME=1 %command%`.
I hope I was clear enough for a guy that would check that post in 1 or 10 years (it totally can be me!). I used a lot, i mean: A LOT - chatGPT. You can just to prompt your issue and then just send to him what terminal gave you. But beware of this - he will likely forgor what was the initial prompt! Please UNDERSTAND what are you doing! Or just cast `rm -rf ./` (seriously, don't send that command).

steam client freezes when changing workspaces
Hey. I'm using the i3 window manager and for some reason, if I switch between workspaces the steam client window becomes static.
It still works, but the page doesn't refresh itself. It's just a static image of what was previously displayed.
The only solution is to resize the window.
This is only the case for the library and download pages. The chat windows still work fine.
Any idea?

1920x1080 resolution missing
I have: Ubuntu 22.04 Nvidia rtx 3060 ti Driver 550.120 Kernel 6.8.0-48-generic
Three days ago i switched on the pc and 1920x1080 resolution was missing. Display settings show a bunch of lower resolutions but not 1920x1080
I have changed hdmi cable Did a fressh ubuntu install (1920x1080 present and working with nouveau drivers) Installed nvidia drivers from additional software And 1920x1080 resolution disappeared again
Re installed ubuntu Disabled nouveau drivers Turned wayland off Manually installed 550.127 drivers Updated grub, xorg.conf (tried adding 1920x1080 to xrandr but bad match) Still resolution wont go above 1276x760 something.
Do you have any idea whats going on?

Man I'm enjoying Nobara so far (Wine GE and Proton GE works like a charm)
it's not my first time using Linux (Ubuntu was my main system for a year during high school) but it's been a while, and i started using nobara because i have a relatively more beefy setup (the change of GPU and adding a second SSD is on the march right now), and im very happy, Nobara is giving me way better results than windows 11 in gaming, i play a lot of blizzard stuff and runs way better than the older OS

Movavi photo editor/video editor (2024/2023)?
Hola!
I know this probably not the right sub for this since it's not about a game buuut I figured since it's proton related, might as well!
Just got Movavi's Photo Editor (2024) and Video Editor (2023) from Steam and was wondering if anyone got them up and running under Linux...? I installed the photo editor and used proton 8.0.* but it just gets stuck on the initial loading image. The video editor won't even start. I also tried proton 9.0.* and experimental.
There's no real useful info over protondb (it's either related to previous versions or just incomplete entries).
I reaaally don't want to install windows, you guys :c (I have been microsoft©-clean for about 2 full years...) so I'd appreciate any leads at this point.
Salu2!

Steam downloads constantly go up and down?
I don't know why this is happening, its frustrating, I've searched for days for a solution yet I can't find any.
I'm on a arch based system, kernel is 6.11.8 on Wayland KDE.
Also this 100% isn't a disk limitation, I run a very fast NVME for my game storage, and a relatively fast SSD for my boot drive. Also not any hardware bottlenecks like CPU.

Hoyoverse games and Lutris
as of recent, i downloaded both hsr and genshin onto lutris as the only other way i can play these games is on my ipad. however, when i go to launch/play the games, it immediately crashes because the GLIBC required is 2.38, however my pop_os (GLIBC 2.35) cant play it. are there any ways to play them without downloading another os or waiting until pop is up to date?

Captured mouse not staying on screen center on Ubuntu 24.10
Noticed while playing Overwatch that the mouse position when using the communication wheel is spawning on the last position the mouse was before being captured by the game. This also causes issues in other moments in game (Using pings with mouse wheel click makes the cursor moves too fast sometimes) and on Blender (moving vertices brings the cursor back to the original position when finishing the move action).
Is anyone facing the same issue? Any workarounds or fixes?

Need for Speed Undercover Project Reformed crashes upon creating profile and trying to load the intro cinematic.
Hi guys. I'm trying to run NFS Undercover with the Project Reformed modpack on Linux, but the game always crashes as soon as it finishes creating the profile and attempts to load the initial cinematic, which is very strange considering it's rated Gold on ProtonDB,neither one of the NFS modding tools used to install Reformed(Binary 2.8.3 and VaultEd),bitched about anything running under Wine, and the mod installation went without a single error. I also ran the game both under X11 and Wayland to rule out any wonkiness of XWayland.
Specs of everything:
Machine: Acer Aspire 3 A315-42-R1B0 laptop(Model with a Ryzen 5 3500U CPU,10GB of RAM and a Radeon Vega 8 iGPU with 2GB of VRAM)
OS: openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE,latest snapshot 20241114.
Kernel version: 6.11.7-1-default
Plasma version: 6.2.3
Mesa version: 24.2.6
Wine version: wine-devel 9.20(default latest wine version on TW btw, because TW lacks the stable version as it's a rolling release distro)
Lutris version: 0.5.17
Steam version: Native/Sniper 17331433018(not Flatpak or $nap,I kinda dislike containerized Linux packages and go for native whenever I can)
*Proton version: I tried 7.0-6(with gamemode),Experimental and UMU-Proton 9.0-3.2(because I somehow managed to compile UMU Launcher from source),even ProtonGE 9.20 didn't make the game runnable.
- Lutris version: 0.5.17(because I first tried to run the game through Lutris)
I don't have logs with me,but if y'all ask me kindly and tell me which commands I need to type in the terminal,I'll gladly provide the output(as I'm not too knowleadgeable with this specific side of Linux, bear with me). I tried to run the game on basically everything(Lutris,Wine,UMU and Steam) except for Bottles(because I never understood why Bottles wouldn't work with my otherwise perfectly fine-under-proton games) and Faugus Launcher(because the dev probably hates openSUSE for some reason),and I may or may not have fucked up my wine prefixes by attempting to run the game through countless possible means,be them Proton,UMU,Wine or Steam itself, always ending in the same result, starting, letting me create the profile, and then proceeding to suddenly crash as soon as it tried to load the cinematic.
If someone is willing to help and guide me through this wacky world of Linux Gaming,I'd be more than thankful for the help.

I compared 4 DE in benchmark
Since I was wondering the importance of DE in gaming performance, I compared 4 myself
Here are the result in Cyberpunk 2077's benchmark (I don't remember exactly but quite high settings in 2560x1440, raytracing, Linux Mint, RAM:16 GB, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, CPU:AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core)
Not sure if I did everything right but :
- KDE average FPS 106.25 - min 84.16
- Cinnamon average FPS 106.49 - min 84.51
- XFCE average FPS 105.47 - min 82.80
- LXQT average FPS 105,78 - min 84,18
Basically : doesn't matter for gaming (but maybe this would change for older PC or Nvidia, idk)
But it does in other settings, I tried launching many apps and videos (1 firefox with many tabs, 1 video playing + 1 reaper instance playing a few tracks music in a loop, + steam client), and XFCE and LXQT were doing better than KDE and Cinnamon
Basically LXQT consumed 8% less CPU than XFCE
XFCE 11% less than KDE
KDE 6% less than Cinnamon
Ram usage was generally close, maybe 5% difference
tl;dr : DE doen't matter for gaming perf but it does a bit more for other applications

RADV underperforming compared to AMDVLK/PRO in Satisfactory
I'm experiencing unexpected performance differences between Vulkan drivers on Arch Linux. While RADV is commonly recommended as the best driver, I'm seeing better performance with AMDVLK and AMDPRO in certain games, particularly Satisfactory (running native Vulkan mode, not DXVK). I previously noticed similar behavior in S&Box's preview dev build, though I can no longer reproduce it there.
System details:
- OS: Arch Linux 6.6.61-1-lts
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT
- Compositor: Hyprland
- Driver versions:
- RADV: 24.2.7 (vulkan-radeon)
- AMDVLK: 2024.Q3.3
- AMDPRO: 24.10
Troubleshooting steps tried:
- Adjusted power profiles using /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level
- Enabled gamemode
The performance difference is consistent: AMDVLK and AMDPRO both perform noticeably better than RADV in Satisfactory. Given RADV's reputation for better performance and compatibility, I'm wondering if this indicates an issue with my setup, or if others have experienced similar behavior with these specific combinations.

Loking for building-sim recommendations
Hey fellow Linux gamers,
I'm in the mood to play a Construction & Management Simulation, but don't know what to play. Can you recommend something that scratches my Anno itch, but runs natively on Linux (or is ehsy to set up in wine or proton) and is either FOSS or can be acquired for cheap on GOG.com? (I try to avoid Steam for DRM reasons)
It doesn't have to be great graphics or anything very modern, something on the level of Anno 1701 would be totally ok, but gameplay should at least be tolerable by modern stadards. If you think an older game still holds up well, even without nostalgia goggles on, you can still recommend it.
