Cyberpunk 2077 hard freezes on CachyOS (AMD RDNA3, Proton) – virtual_setup_exception nested exception on signal stack

24. Dezember 2025 - 14:31

Hi, I’m having serious stability issues with Cyberpunk 2077 on Linux and I’m running out of ideas and need help! I'm experiencing consistent crashes/freezes. The game always launches, runs smoothly, but no Proton version is stable. Crashes happen randomly during gameplay, often after 2-30 minutes. Usually after like 5 minutes. Running the game with PROTON_LOG=1 produces the exact same error in every proton version.

Proton versions tested:

  • Proton-CachyOS 10.0-20251126 (steam linux runtime):
  • Proton Experimental
  • GE-Proton10-27: game ran the longest (~1 h), but crash here soft-locked the system (could alt+tab but nothing would launch, not even a terminal window), requiring a hard reset. Previous Protons allowed killing the process normally.

Proton GE:

err:virtual:virtual_setup_exception nested exception on signal stack addr 0x7f3a518b2e60 stack 0x7ffcce50

Proton Experimental:

err:virtual:virtual_setup_exception nested exception on signal stack addr 0x7ff6178b2e60 stack 0x7ffcce50

Notably, the address is always identical, suggesting a deterministic memory allocation issue.

Specs:
Kernel: Linux 6.18.2-3-cachyos
KDE Plasma 6.5.4
WM: KWin (Wayland)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7500F (12) @ 5.08 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB [Discrete]
RAM: 32GB

Happens in:

  • Missions (e.g. Heist, Braindance)
  • Menus (skills/perks)
  • Sometimes after only 2–5 minutes, sometimes works up to ~1h if little happens on-screen

Things that I've already tested (all with cache clean + verify files):

  • Ray Tracing OFF / ON
  • FSR 3 / 4
  • With / without gamescope
  • With / without mangohud
  • FPS limit only in-game (monitor 200 Hz)
  • vm.max_map_count increased to 2147483642

Crashes occur in all configurations. Flags seem irrelevant. Ray Tracing may speed up the crash.

Game is opened through Steam, Launch commands tested:

Raw:

%command% --launcher-skip --intro-skip

Gamescope:

mangohud DXVK_ASYNC=1 VKD3D_ASYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 \

PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 PROTON_ADD_CONFIG=fsr4rdna4 \

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm,version=n,b" RADV_PERFTEST=nggc \

gamescope -f -w 2560 -h 1440 -r 200 --force-grab-cursor -- \

%command% --launcher-skip --intro-skip -skipStartScreen

Without gamescope (last crash on proton GE):

VKD3D_CONFIG=no_upload_hvv PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 \

PROTON_LOG=1 PROTON_ADD_CONFIG=fsr4rdna4 mangohud \

%command% --launcher-skip --intro-skip

Having trouble installing Reshade & ps2 controllers in Clair Obscure.

24. Dezember 2025 - 14:23

I'm following this guide

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNvfgYSmwwc

But reshade doesn't show up.

I tried putting a PS2 controller in the game, but it doesn't seem to recognize it. But on steam's big picture, it can recognize the controller.

Tekken 8, can't connect to the server

24. Dezember 2025 - 14:22

I'm on popOS, i have an asus a15 (nvidia 4060), don't know if its relevant.
i've tried proton experimental, hotfix, 8-0-5 and 7-0-6. i made sure to have Easy anti cheat installed and chatgpt suggested to "disable" ipv6 or something like that.
Still cant connect, anything i'm missing? I'm not a linux expert, i've been using it for less than a month and i dont have very good knowledge in terms of "internet" and "network" stuff tbh, so i don't really know what could be the problem.

(everytime it gives the same error: C-00001-00898-1)

i also pased this into the lauch options:

PROTON_EAC_RUNTIME=1 %command% HOST_LC_ALL=$(echo $LANG) %command%

Can I play Rust on Linux?

24. Dezember 2025 - 14:01

Installed Rust today as I used to play it on windows all the time, tried to get into a server and was met with a no EAC detected error.

noticed that Rust had installed via proton, and so the EAC installed was an .exe

Wanted to make a thread in case older threads had outdated info.

Is there any ways around this issue or am I going to have a Christmas without Rust?

Cheers.

Recording games using Steam flatpak

24. Dezember 2025 - 13:45

Hello,

I am currently using Fedora 43 Cosmic. I have Steam installed via Flatpak because I don't see a system installation.

The problem is that I can't record gameplay. It seems to save a temporary file with the recording, etc., but when I try to play it back or save it, I always get an error saying that it can't be done.

Does this feature even work on Linux?

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Could it be a problem with my distribution?

I should mention that I switched to Linux from Windows about a year ago, so I'm still learning the ropes.

Steam "The Farmer was replaced" sudden graphics issue

24. Dezember 2025 - 13:41

I installed and played "The Farmer was replaced" from Steam yesterday. No issues, everything worked OOTB.

Now, the next day, I only get this screen:

https://preview.redd.it/w6u2p8i4d59g1.png?width=1918&format=png&auto=webp&s=3017c9ec820dcdcc79cd58212d9d7674b3f74458

I can hear the games music, and it reacts to me pressing "ESC" (the screen gets a little darker).

I tried every common tinker steps:
Proton Experimental, Proton-GE, Proton Latest Stable, Launch options mentioned on ProtonDB: https://www.protondb.com/app/2060160

I'm running out of ideas here :(

Fedora: Anno 117 stuck on "Running" in Steam but never really starts.

24. Dezember 2025 - 11:51

hi guys

I recently made the switch from Windows to Fedora. So far all the games I tried have worked, except for Anno 117.

When I press Play, it says "Running" but nothing happens. I tried using GE Proton 10.26 and 10.27 and adding the startup parameters suggested here: https://www.protondb.com/app/3274580

But nothing seems to do the trick. Are there any other suggestions by any chance?

Cheers and happy holidays!

Game freezes when switching between apps (Zorin OS)

24. Dezember 2025 - 10:48

I've recently started using Zorin OS after what microsoft did to us with Windows 10 and Windows 11, so I'm a total noob in everything with Linux

Here's the problem: Sometimes I need to use other apps while gaming (browser to switch music, OBS to record something, etc.), so I press alt+tab to switch to other apps. But when I switch back to a game, it completely freezes, I cannot close it, and I had to restart my laptop. Is there a way to fix it?

My specs: OS: Zorin OS 18 Core CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 260 GPU: Nvidia RTX 5070 8 GB SSD: 1 TB RAM: 32 GB

I have this particular problem with Warframe. Never tested on other game, but it still bothers me

If any other information is required, I'll be gla to provide it

Ghost Recon Breakpoint possible memory leak

24. Dezember 2025 - 09:23

so i tried playing ghost recon breakpoint via steam. I managed to get uplay up and running, but as soon as I picked my style of playthough, my linux os closed it, citing that it used too much ram. I have tried looking around for a solution but no one seems to have one. I have enough ram according to the recomended specs on the steam page, so why is it over using ram?

System specs:

OS: Ubuntu 25.10

CPU: Intel Core i5-13420H 13th gen

Ram: 8gb

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050

Very unstable ping on overwatch

24. Dezember 2025 - 07:33

I've recently switched to linux mint and all my games work flawlessly except for overwatch 2. My FPS aren't great but most annoying is my ping spikes every 1-2 seconds which makes the game essentially unplayable.

I've tried it both on Steam and Lutris, turned my settings way down, and reinstalled drivers. Nothing seems to work and I can't find any thread on people with the same exact issue (and those with similar ones the solutions, see above, didn't work).

Is there any other steps I could take to try and fix this problem? I'm still a beginner on linux and don't know much.

I released my RPG/action platformer "Idosra: The Electric Renaissance" on Steam. I'd like to share a few things I learned developing "Linux first"

24. Dezember 2025 - 06:44

By "Linux first", I mean developing primary on Linux, and porting to Windows, which I gather is flip-flopped from typical practice. The game has been out for a few weeks now. Given the title, I don't think it will be surprising to hear I had more technical issues with the Windows port during the last two weeks of development. The key takeaway is next time I will test on Windows more frequently. Testing on all ports frequently is good advice in general, though.

I'm seeing more people giving Linux a try, which I'm expecting means more indie game developers will pay closer attention to Linux. If that's you, here are a few experiences I'd like to share.

Workflow: Building the Windows port reminded me why I switched to Linux in the first place. Frequent notification pop-ups, updates, anti-virus warnings, CoPilot pop-ups, and so on lead to too many distractions. None of these, by themselves, would have been too bad, but added together my overall experience was frustrating. To be fair, if I used Windows more frequently then these interruptions would be spread out over a longer time frame. Still, I when I turn on my Linux system, it boots up and I'm ready to go to work.

Peripheral Testing: I bought an off-brand XBox controller to test gamepad support. To get it to work on Linux, I had to edit the driver source code. This was probably a combination of poor luck and poor research. Linux has come a long way since I started using it, but there are still hiccups.

Anti-virus: For a while I ran into constant crashes that left no stack trace. Eventually I noticed the executable disappeared entirely. Anti-virus had deleted it! I ended up disabling anti-virus completely. I'm sure there's a more graceful solution, but since I use the Windows PC strictly for building my own Windows apps, I'm not concerned about viruses. I can turn anti-virus back on and run a scan manually. It doesn't need to run 24/7.

Steam Deck: I don't think anyone will be surprised to hear I had no trouble at all building a Steam Deck port.

Bash Scripts and Tools: Bash scripts helped me automate a lot of tedious tasks. In particular, coupled with ImageMagick, I had tools to help me build and manipulate sprite sheets, organize game data files, generate physical steam keys to give away at conventions, and more. Admittedly, I'm out of the loop with Windows PowerShell. Still, the terminal emulator proved to be a valuable tool.
