TW Warhammer 3: TAA woes - possible workaround

31. August 2024 - 00:54

Hi,

I don't want this to be lost to the aether:

Vanilla TWWH3 supports none, fxaa, taa, taa (high), but the game is designed with TAA in mind.

That means unless you use TAA you will get flickering (bushes/trees). And the games TAA implementation, as a bonus, is quite performance intensive (at least on my rig) and blurry[1].

It gets more blurry the less the resolution is AND (hint: motionvectors) the less fps you get.

So what to do:

  • lower res -> more fps -> but more blur

  • higher res -> less fps -> lag + more blur

[1] i.e. load Skrolk with TAA and look at his backback, load campaign - move cam and look at bushes

So on my quest to get rid of flickering and blur, only one thing worked: AstrayFX/Temporal_AA a reshade shader, that describes itself as:

TAA is a Epic Games implementation of Temporal AA that seems the only real way

of doing this in reshade with out motion vectors.

(emphasis mine)

And in my case 1440p@90% I finally get playable performance + ok AA + no blur (on the proton version of the game)

HOWTO:

  • download/clone reshade-shaders, put somewhere (i.e. ~/.local/share/reshade/), get astrafx shaders, merge into same dir.
  • create vkBasalt.conf similar to:

``` effects = taa
taa = "/home/[user]/.local/share/reshade/Shaders/Temporal_AA.fx" reshadeTexturePath = "/home/[user]/.local/share/reshade/Textures" reshadeIncludePath = "/home/[user]/.local/share/reshade/Shaders" ```
  • launch game something like this: ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 MANGOHUD=1 MESA_VK_WSI_PRESENT_MODE=relaxed %command%
  • profit (and comment if you thing its better or worse)
Are we (PC Gamers) just accepting bad distance textures?
30. August 2024 - 23:33
This isn't really a “technical” gaming post, but I'd be really interested in your opinion.
I recently switched from a 1080Ti to a 4080-S due to a new computer. That's probably why I'm paying so much attention to it.
I'm just surprised at how incredibly bad the textures in the distances are in some games. Here are a few screenshots:
Forza Horizon 5 stuttering/slowdown and memory leaks on Nobara
30. August 2024 - 22:57
Anybody else experienced this and managed to tweak the game so they get rid of of the constant memory leaks(after about an hour) and the slowdowns? It is really hard to play and it is giving me a hard time enjoying this new game. Tried messing with the settings, vsync, steam launch options, nothing helped. I have to restart every hour or so and pray i dont have many slow downs. submitted by /u/antonioro0007
30. August 2024 - 22:02
I am trying to find steam save game locations, and its driving me crazy, I have tried command line searching for the folder location of the steam ID and nothing comes up, trying to copy my windows save over to linux for F.E.A.R.
sudo find / 21090
Ive tried several locations like below and nothing.
/home/ST910/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/21090/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games
why doesn't search find it lol
I don't know if there are real benefits to having it enabled but at least it won't break systems now
Linux Shared Space for Steam Libraries.
30. August 2024 - 21:32
I run a cybercafe. We have 15 high end computers, and lots of regulars come in to play games.
We recently installed Pop!_OS on a section of the computers to see if it's for us.
When we pre-install games from Steam for them, they are only playable from the user owning the folder containing the Steam Library.
We have tried changing the owner to nobody, chmod 777, and making/adding users to a gamers group. It seems these permissions are ignored.
What do we do to share the files with other local users?
Will the save files still be located in .compatdata in home?
Thanks in advance.
Specifically we have tried:
Try 1
sudo su chown /gamedrive/games/steamgames/ nobody chmod -R /gamedrive/games/steamgames/ 7777
Try 2
sudo su addgroup gamers adduser gamer0001 gamers chown /gamedrive/games/steamgames/ gamers
Seekers of Skyveil works great, even in Alpha. LoL x Tarkov
30. August 2024 - 20:46
Elodie Games have their final closed alpha for Seekers right now (keys are still available through drops) and It's running beautifully on Proton - Im even using a 32:9 Monitor and it's coping like a champ.
I fully expect Linux support all through release given their website's headline is "We make games for people, not platforms" and they describe their mission statement as
"We’re Elodie, a new games studio dedicated to building better crossplay games. We believe gaming should never be compromised by the platform it’s played on"
If you miss League of legends or Tarkov then it might be a good game for you.
Is there a way to run Sober through the Roblox website as if it's a launcher?
30. August 2024 - 20:34
So as we all know Roblox is now playable through Sober, and I'll admit it's pretty smooth, the performance is similar or even better than running natively in windows. However, accessing the games are only possible through the application. Meanwhile I usually launch Roblox through websites as they provide extensions that just helps alot, and uses less performance (from my experience, cause opening sober's app just slows down everything)
gamescope window offset
30. August 2024 - 20:14
Hi guys,
whenever i start a steam game with "gamescope -f -h 3440 -w 1440 -r 175 --hdr-enabled %command%" launch parameters i still see a tiny part of taskbar at the bottom and the right. The windows looks like its offset a few pixels towards the top and the left altough in fullscreen mode.
Linux distros diversity appreciation post
30. August 2024 - 19:44
Not a distrohopper, I usually keep my installs for years and years. They're all so good and each has their strengths. I'm now triple-booting and I'm torn apart about which one to use and which one to retire. My thoughts about a few of them:
  • Fedora (my oldest install, started on 35 beta). Everything just works except for the occasional non-free repos kerfuffles (but usually it's just an annoyance and things get fixed by themselves).
  • openSUSE Tubleweed (installed about one year ago), Oh boy, you have to appreciate snapper and the bootable snapshots. Really, you can experiment everything and then boot in a previous snapshot and rollback.
  • Debian, had it installed for years (but not now). One has to love the stability. Follow "don't break Debian" and you're golden. The only gripe I had with it was nVidia drivers (had to make much more manual edits than in any other distro), but once they're setup you're golden
  • Bazzite and Nobara. They're both great. Having the gamescope session available out-of the-box is a bless. Gave up on Bazzite because reboot times on immutable distros are terrific but learnt so many new tricks because of the immutability restrictions (ex: never knew you can connect to Pulse Secure VPNs using Gnome network manager, so after Bazzite I learned I can remove the crappy Pulse software on all my distros. Never knew you can setup NextCloud and have the file system integrated in Nautilus, after that I could stop using S3 and fuse-fs). Nobara is just great. Only thing that scares me is that it's a one-man distro, a great man (u/GloriousEggroll) but still scary.
I had in the past used Slackware(20 years ago) and Ubuntu(5-10 tears ago). Linux was painful back then so I'm not going to comment.
TLDR: I would completely switch to Nobara if it would have snapper and bootable snapshots (I know it's not going to happen). I would switch to Fedora if they would have gamescope session, snapper and bootable snapshots (not going to happen because RedHat is too proud to use openSUSE software). I would switch to openSUSE in an instant if they would have gamescope session (and probably this is going to happen at one point). Meanwhile I just enjoy the ride and use all 3 of them :)
Would love to find out why you choose your current distro. What was the "selling point" for you.
Later edit: on desktop environments I'm a Gnome fanatic and never try anything else. Gnome just works for me, it's never in my way, like an invisible friend.
Issues with difrent GPU's options on laptop
30. August 2024 - 19:13
I just got a new laptop, allways had a desktop before. I noticed that UAD wouldn't launch properly unless i set the gpu setting to nvidia only (from On-demand mode). I have asus rog strix 17 with 4050.
with on-demand gpu option the game window just doesn't show, steam says the game is running but nothing is visible
does anyone have similar problems, is there any fix?
*UAD means Ultimate admiral dreadnoughts, game which works perfectly with proton without any tinkering on desktop.
Nvidia KDE Plasma Wayland Multiple Monitors, 60Hz, 144Hz, and 165Hz, problem with 60Hz monitor frame rate
30. August 2024 - 19:11
Hi everyone, I've been having an issue lately on KDE Plasma 6.1.4 on Wayland where my 60hz monitor will occasionally become laggy, like the render FPS is dropping to around 40-50 and the mouse movement becomes very laggy, my other 165hz (Primary) and 144hz monitors are unaffected by this and are still buttery smooth. If I run UFO test on the 60Hz monitor while the issue is happening the FPS is about 40-50. I've noticed this happens primarily with Firefox being open.
What's strange to me is I see a lot of reports of the opposite happening where the higher refresh rate monitor will slow down to 60hz but for me it's the 60hz monitor is having issues not my high refresh rate monitors.
On x11 this issue does not happen, this is only a Wayland issue. Has anyone else experienced this before? It's very hard to find any information on this and it's been like this since I switched to Wayland when the Nvidia driver got explicit sync support. I've tried the __GL_SYNC_DISPLAY_DEVICE=DP-1 environment variable but that changes nothing.
