Not a big deal, but I wonder why this happens with Steam

05. August 2025 - 02:24

Like a said this is not a big deal but I wonder if there's a way to stop it. Basically when I open the Steam Client (the native version), after a couple minutes it just closes and immediately opens again, it only happens the first time I open the client, and I can just minimize the window or just close it, but sometimes I start playing and the Steam Client pops up on top of my game and I need to take it away, which isn't that bad but it becomes a little annoying lol.

I just wonder if this happen to anyone else and if there's a way to make it stop, if there's not, that's ok I guess, I can live with it.

Steam Games immediately crashes

05. August 2025 - 02:16

I have tried to run three different games with those being civilisation 6 which crashed immediately kerbal space program which showed a black screen for some time and then crashed the only game I could launch successfully was hearts of iron 4. All of the above games I mentioned have native linux support. Weirdly when I set the compatibility to proton on kerbal space program It did launch but crashed just before reaching the main menu

I have checked and have already installed amdgpu drivers.

I’m thinking maybe I have to install other gpu drivers and not use those install by the os or there maybe something else that’s making it crashe Hardware:HUAWEI D15 Laptop CPU RYZEN 5500u I’m using integrated graphics Radeon vega 7 8gb ram Linux Distribution : Fedora 42

Update managed to launch kerbal space program through proton it’s working perfectly now
But I think the native version would run better if I could launch it

SDL error despite having SDL downloaded??

05. August 2025 - 01:32

I'm trying to get Brogue to run on my system, but anytime I try to run it, I get the error:

"./brogue: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

However I believe I already have SDL2 downloaded onto my system, so what gives?

Also, idk if this is useful, but the README that comes with the game says it needs `libsdl2-2.0-0 libsdl2-image-2.0-0`, which is different than the error message, but either way I downloaded both this and what the error message asked for and it downloaded fine.

My specifics are Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon 6.4.8

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Theory: Steam hardware survey numbers have a bigger impact on anti-cheat support than we might think.

05. August 2025 - 01:18

Let's say that the average Linux gamer plays multiplayer in a group size of 2.5
For games that bar Linux through anti-cheat, they are not simply losing your business, they are losing that of your friends too, as who wants to play games without their buddy?
Lets take that average of 2.5 down to 2 to account for friends that will still play when you aren't available - if we represent 3% of the steam user base, that's 6% of the steam user base that wont be playing an anti-cheat disabled game.

Of course the most important thing to consider is that money is more important than anything else to these devs. There will be a break point where the percentage of revenue lost from you and your friends not playing, is greater than the cost of either; developing a userspace anti-cheat that "works", or the reputational "cost" of just hitting the "sod it" button and permitting linux via EAC/whatever.

If we hit 5%, and the opportunity cost is now 10% playerbase to the devs, I'd imagine the justification for keeping us blocked to the shareholders starts to look pretty weak in the face of 10% more money every year.

Steam won't play recordings (but embedded videos are fine)

05. August 2025 - 01:00

Recordings will just appear as black rectangles. Can't play them, but hovering over the progress bar will show key frames. And exporting works fine.

I found a thread on Steam forums from 2024: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/5/4416424597681281587/

But there is no answer there. It feels like I may be missing some package/dependency. Any ideas?

Monster hunter rise locked at 60fps despite unlocking in-game

04. August 2025 - 22:57

Hello hello, i'm relatively new to linux only having used Nobara for about 2 months. Unfortunately, the game seems to be locked to 60fps despite the lock being set at 120/360 in game and tinkering any more with the settings does nothing, same with different proton versions. Appreciate it, thanks!

Cs2 freezes T side

04. August 2025 - 22:38

Since the animgraph update CS2 keeps freezing making it completely unplayable, but only when playing T side. Freezes last around 10 seconds, FPS drop to 0 and PC is unresponsive.

It often leads to the game and xdg portal crashing.

It's the only game giving me this issue.

At first I suspected the switch to Wayland but since they switched back I don't think it's the culprit.

Tried verifying game files but nothing changed.

PC specs are Ryzen 9600x, RX 7800 XT, 32gb ram. Arch Linux, drivers updated to the latest version, KDE plasma with Kwin.

Anyone experiencing the same? Can't be the only one, but I didn't find similar problems online.

The Witcher enhanced edition freezes after about a minute

04. August 2025 - 22:03

I've played the game for about 12 hours on a windows PC during the past week because I didn't have access to my laptop that runs mainly ZorinOS.

Now I'm back to Linux and wanted to try the game for the first time there and it doesn't want to work, for about a minute, everything is perfect, then if I click options, it just completely freezes until I force quit it.

I tried Proton GE 10-10 I believe was the version not 100% sure about the exact numbers tho but it should be the latest version or at most a couple weeks old.

Also tried proton experimental and hotfix. Copied some launch options from ProtonDB and tried GE and experimental again with the exact same result.

The unfortunate reality is that my laptop's GPU is Nvidia and I had to struggle to get the proper driver working last week so that might have something to do with the freezing, but I've been playing Minecraft for many hours with many mods and it's working just fine.

Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix this or at least what to try next. I really don't want to have to go back to windows just to play that game when everything else I do is on Linux.

FNV mod help, anyone there?

04. August 2025 - 21:54

Losing my mind Steam Deck [FNV]

Background info: Im using Vortex on a Steam Deck with Pikdum's Post Deploy. I followed Viva New Vegas, and everything worked perfectly, except for archive invalidation, I spent a whole ass day troubleshooting and finally manually generated the archive invalidation.txt, now my textures work, howver none of my other mods, like MCM, JAM, Western Skies are working. I did a fresh new install, following viva again, and making my ai.txt manually, same issue.

Which brings us to now, I am fucking losing my mind. UIO doesn't seem to be working, and neither does anything else besides textures. I can replace the main menu, and other shit like that, but no ui changes, I also can't add MCM, for some reason, I've done it through vortex, and manually, and it WILL NOT show up NO MATTER WHAT. Same with JAM, even without MCM, nothing shows up like dynamic crosshair, sprinting.

Ive tried fucking everything, this is my third clean install, Im using Proton GE 27, ive tried manually installing mods, ive tried following viva new vegas again, ive reinstalled uio, ive installed it manually.

This is the most fucking frustrating experience of my entire life and all I want in this world is for my stupid fucking mods to work. Please help.

And dont tell me to switch to MO2 unless that really is the solution. Im too far deep in the vortex.

Boycott Battlefield 6

04. August 2025 - 21:30

In case you haven't already heard, EA has decided to actively block Proton, Wine or SteamDeck from running their brand new shooter, as they have already done for other titles of the saga, such as BF1.

After the Windows 11 debacle and many users quitting Windows seemingly forever after being forced to buy new hardware to feed Bill Gates' already full pockets, it would be a step back for everyone in the Linux community and otherwise to simply roll over and take it up the ass when it comes to this new occurrence.

I've already heard people in other subreddits pushing users to dual-boot what is esentially spy- and ad-ware on their machines, because there will be no other way to play this game, not only because EA and DICE are incompetent enough to produce anticheat that support Proton (much like EasyAntiCheat has been able to do forever) but also because they outright don't give a fuck about us users.

I don't only refer to Linux users in the previous sentence, but to every single user of a PC anywhere in the world. What do EA care if you choose to play their brand spanking new game that costs 70 bucks on any hardware of your choosing? Why require SecureBoot to run the game? Are they that incompetent? Yes, but not only that, as I've already said! They simply don't give a fuck about consumers, and just want to make a quick buck out of you!

We must all rise to the occasion by boycotting this game to show this company that their extortion techniques will be met with nothing less than outright war.

Thank you very much for coming to my TED talk.

Help me find a working remote desktop app please.

04. August 2025 - 21:12

Hi all,

I've been using Linux (Manjaro) for a while for gaming and really, I'm so glad I switched from Windows.

I have a small problem though, I need my computer to be remotely controlled and I really can't find a way that works as good as Windows.

For now, I'm stuck using windows with chrome remote desktop because it works from login screen, has touch input working and it works from a web interface.

I use manjaro gnome, with Wayland. That Wayland part seems to be the problem.

NoMachine supports it, but not from login screen, so if I reboot the PC, I'm screwed. Also, touch does not work, or works very badly.

AnyDesk does not support Wayland.

Chrome Remote Desktop does not support Wayland, nor xorg because I could not make it work.

I tried to Gnome remote desktop, but it's laggy as hell and I could not make it work outside of my home network. Also does not work on the login screen.

So, what are my options? Do you guys know a good remote desktop app that works just like chrome's one, that can work from a tablet, that my PC can reboot and I don't lose access to it?

Thanks

Flatpak emulators (PPSSPP, RPCS3, etc..) loose their settings every few days

04. August 2025 - 20:52

Hello All, so I have PPSSPP and RPCS3 installed on my Linux Mint laptop. Every 2-3 days it kind of 'forgets' where everything is, like it looses access to ROMs folder (I need to point to the directory again) and then all my save data are gone, and my controller mappings reset, etc... I have the home directory encrypted if that may be the case? Do I need to install the system package (some of the emulators only have the flatpak and app image). Thanks!

Poor Cyberpunk performance on nixos

04. August 2025 - 20:26

Recently made the switch from arch to nix, already feels a lot more stable, but some games just run like crap. I'm pretty sure I got the drivers and everything ready to game, yet Cyberpunk runs quite poor for the hardware I have or at least that's how I feel like. I have an rx 7900xt sapphire nitro+, Ryzen 9 5950x, 32gb DDR4 4000MHZ RAM and Cyberpunk is on an older sata ssd. I have between 45 - 60 fps on ultra, but wven when I switch to the steam deck preset nothing changes and it still runs the same. Am I missing something?
