Copying local save files from Windows to Linux

31. Mai 2024 - 19:06

Hi!

I want to switch soon and I've already decided on the distro (Mint), used it for some time in a live session and I'm planning on formatting and a full switch.

I'm not the most tech literate guy so I still struggle with some things but at the same time I don't require much from an OS so I didn't really have to learn much.

The thing I wonder about is copying local game save files to Linux. Currently I use RPCS3 to emulate some games and it saves locally. I have no idea if these save files are Windows exclusive because I had obviously downloaded the Windows RPCS3 app (there was a Linux one to choose thus my dillema).

Can I just find and copy the save files through a USB stick? Does it even work that way on Linux? I've heard you can't really run or copy(?) files from Windows users. That's a pretty niche case I think so sorry if I didn't include only the important info.

New gpu graphical issues on low vram clock

31. Mai 2024 - 18:39

I recently purchased an RX 7800 XT, and while it runs smoothly on Windows with the VRAM clock speed at 2400 MHz, I'm encountering some issues on Linux. Specifically, I'm experiencing brief graphical flickering, such as lines across the screen or small purple blotches, whenever the GPU VRAM clock speed drops to between 25 and 1000 MHz. This only happens at these low clock speeds. When I force the GPU VRAM clock speed to around 2400 MHz on Linux, the problem disappears. Is it normal to experience such flickering at clock speeds below 250 MHz?

System info:

distro: gentoo
kernel: 6.9.2
gpu: RX 7800 XT

Edit1:
Seems to happen sometimes when the clock-speed changes on the vram and it happens on my other screen when im alt tabbed and not focused

Example:
if im focused on firefox then minecraft can sometimes have the white line across the screen for 0.2 seconds when changing vram clock

Xdefiant Hitching

31. Mai 2024 - 18:10

I've gotten Xdefiant working pretty painlessly with heroic launcher. I'm pulling 160+ fps but getting random hitching. It's happening enough to get me killed. Not sure what's causing it, anyone else experiencing this? Cpu - 5800x3d GPU - 6900xt

Pascal cards performance issues

31. Mai 2024 - 18:10

Yeah I know this isn’t new news, but I had no clue about it. I’m currently looking to upgrade my system sometime this year, still rocking an HDD and the likes.

I currently have a GTX 1080 which I’ve had since 2017. Has been a great card, but for some games it just runs slow.

LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT PASCAL CARDS BLOW FOR DX12 GAMES

Been using Linux since 2021 too so yeeeeeee

Feel like this info should be WAY more widespread, especially with a lot of people saying “I have no problems with NVIDIA, it’s great!” or some shiz. I know it’s not a problem for newer architecture cards, but for Linux also being good for old systems, this should be important to mention.

Luxtorpeda reset controls

31. Mai 2024 - 17:59

I used luxtorpeda to install GZDoom on the Steam Deck.

The controls worked great out-of-box, but I accidentally selected the "Reset to defaults" option in the settings and now the game does not respond to any buttons on the Steam Deck.

I understand that it is possible to rebind all the buttons, but is there an easier way to restore the controls to what they were out-of-box?

Using DualShock 4 controller with Alan Wake 2 through Heroic Games Launcher

31. Mai 2024 - 17:58

I have Alan Wake 2 running on Ubuntu through the Heroic Games Launcher using Proton Experimental. However, I can't get it to recognize my DualShock 4 controller. I can use the controller in Steam, and https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad is picking up the gamepad just fine.

I've tried running it through Steam, and through the Heroic Games Launcher directly. I've tried with Steam running and without it running at all (as some posts suggest Steam interferes with it).

But still, AW2 just doesn't seem to think a controller is attached.

I'm so close to making the switch to Linux but...

31. Mai 2024 - 17:55

Newbie user here. I may not fully understand things yet.

I'm getting close to ditch windows and use Linux. There's a couple of things holding me back.

The first thing is my sound card. I have distortion and strange noises every now and then. It can be while playing a game or a notification sound comes out of nowhere. It's running on pipewire.

The second issue is stuttering going on in Forza Horizon 5 and graphical glitches on the vulkan rendering mode on BeamNG Drive. I'm using X11 and disabled the compositor in KDE settings.

The specs of my system are: Distro: EndeavorOS (lastest available as of writing this) Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma System specs: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G Nvidia RTX 2060 12Gb 32Gb RAM Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus

If anyone knows how to solve these problems, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Released my yacht dice clone today! Developed with Godot on Linux

31. Mai 2024 - 17:44

Finally released the yacht dice clone I was working on in godot! All main development done in Linux (Debian w/kde).

Available for download or in browser on itch at https://ludoloonstudio.itch.io/yacht-dice

Linux binary available, but web and Windows both work flawless on Linux too lol.

Feels good to get back into gamedev, hoping to put out more stuff as time goes on.

Bottles gui isn't showing windows .exe files

31. Mai 2024 - 16:58

Bottles gui isn't showing windows .exe files when I go to "add shortcuts".

I'm running debian 12 unstable. I'm trying to get Bethesda games working with mods. I had them working a month ago, but I had somethings that weren't perfect about the set up so I decided to wipe the drive and start trying to get gaming debian working again but with a fresh start. That was a mistake because this process had been nothing but a headache after another headache.

I didn't click on any dependencies, I have no idea what to click on for settings, dependencies, or if I need to. I was able to get new vegas to run. I was able to do that not by "add shortcuts" or "run executable" through the bottles gui, but by right clicking the setup file in the FNV folder and then sending it to bottles.

Thanks for reading, answer at your liessure, I might be able to figure it out.

Error installing game "could not find steam.exe"

31. Mai 2024 - 16:08

I want to install the non steam version of Counter-Strike 1.6 on Mint. It's not that I haven't tried using Proton on steam, but it gives me the error message "could not find steam.exe to launch" after installation. Normally it does not require this file to run on windows.

Nvidia power draw on Linux and lower performance

31. Mai 2024 - 15:34

So I was testing my GPU's (Nvidia 1650S) behaviour under Linux in Helldivers 2 and noticed that it draws 15 to 20 less watts than in Windows (80-82 vs 98-100) despite having Maximum Performance set in nvidia settings and gamemode configured. Temps are fine too, under windows with 100W it only gets to 58C and that's a full stock behaviour.

In both systems it goes 100% GPU util.

Not to mention that nvidia-smi power shows that max draw is 120W, but nvidia-smi performance shows either idle or SW power cap active. I wonder if I can do something to make my gpu use *more* power under Linux so I can rely less on Windows?

My system is Linux Mint 21.3 and drivers are 555

Optimising an old laptop to play Minecraft (Java edition) and nothing else

31. Mai 2024 - 15:22

A friend of mine has an old laptop they want to optimise to run Minecraft Java edition (specs below). They don't have any experience with computers so they asked me to help. They have a different laptop they use for everyday things, so the old laptop can be dedicated to running Minecraft as best as it can and nothing else.

My guess is that Linux is the best option for this laptop, since Win10 won't be available for much longer and Win11 eats up so much RAM. Now, my question is, what should I pay attention to for Minecraft? I know the game is optimised weirdly (or not at all) compared to other games, but I don't know any details about it.

I also have to keep in mind that my friend has little computer experience. That means the Minecraft launcher should start with one click via a link on the desktop or taskbar like it does in Windows. Preferably, any maintenance like Java and driver updates should be handled either automatically or from a single additional shell script that can be run with one click from the desktop. It also needs to support wireless internet and playing on Minecraft servers online.

I myself have plenty of experience with programming and all kinds of Linux distros, but until now I've always used Windows 10 for gaming so this specific area is a bit new to me.

Are there any special distros or tools I should consider for this? I know Steam has something called Proton, do I need to start looking into that? And what kind of performance should I expect?

Laptop specs: Lenovo IdeaPad C340-15IML with an Intel Core i5-10210 (4 cores, 8 threads, base 1.8GHz up to 4.2GHz boosted) and 8GB memory. The laptop technically has a dedicated GPU, but it's a GeForce MX230 with 2GB memory. The built in keyboard is also broken, though I don't expect this to matter much.

Recommendations gaming PC?

31. Mai 2024 - 15:05

Hi, I'm looking to possibly replace my Shadow Blade Win10 cloud PC with a local Linux machine for gaming. I currently use Linux Mint on a Mini-PC for everything else, and would like to keep that OS if possible, and run games through Steam Proton.

Can someone give me a rough overview of what parts would be recommendable and what it would cost me? I'm not playing MMOs, so it doesn't have to be ultra high-end. These are the specs that have worked well for me in the past on a Windows PC, so comparable performance would be nice.

-Intel XEON2.5 3.1 GHz 8 vCores

-Quadro P5000

-12GB RAM

And it would be fantastic if it could fit in a rather small case, but that's optional.

Budget...I don't know, but let's say preferrably around 1000, or if necessary up to ca. 1500€.

Keyboard stops working in game (PopOS)

31. Mai 2024 - 14:40

Hey, I've just switched over from Windows and all is going great except this annoying little problem:

Whenever I tab out and back in of the game Football Manager (via steam), my keyboard just stops working in the game. It works fine outside the game, I can still tab out and do anything else outside the game, but it does nothing in the game.

Strangely, switching from full screen to windowed fixes it ... until I tab out again.

Anyone has some ideas?

Warthunder VR?

31. Mai 2024 - 14:33

I've recently switched to Linux (Zorin) and have been learning a lot with it - but admittedly i'm still pretty green.

I've looked for a solution to this for days, and maybe it's not possible, but has anyone had success playing Warthunder (steam or standalone) in VR? I've been able to get Assetto Corsa to work, Star Wars Squadrons, Elite Dangerous, and No Man's Sky...but for some reason, I just can't get Warthunder to run in VR. I've tried the native Linux version and i've tried forcing GE_Proton (steam version).

I'm just curious if anyone has had success or would like to try and troubleshoot it with me.

Thanks.
