Linux blockfor me.

26. November 2024 - 16:39

I admit I hate windows. I wanna swap to a KDE Linux platform. I love the customization and widgets available. But sadly a main thing i do is games like valorant with friends. And since I stream said games I feel a bit blocked. That and EMUVR doesn't work on linux from what I've seen. (Or anything with a deep anticheat) It's kind of disappointing. Feels like it keeps my chained to windows. I haven't found anything yet and hoping that maybe I somehow missed something. I don't want to dual boot as that requires then setting up two OBS instances and I use a lot of apps for stream.

How to improve my Overwatch 2 performance on EndeavourOS (KDE)?

26. November 2024 - 16:29

I switched to Linux a few months ago and finally tried to play Overwatch 2 over the last few weeks.
I'm using Steam (Runtime) and Proton Experimental (also tried Proton GE) and have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB as GPU and a Intel CoffeeLake-S GT2 [UHD Graphics 630] CPU. When starting the game, I always wait until the "Compiling shaders" notice disappears.

The Game is running with highest settings on Windows with 60fps and I can archive the same with EndeavourOS. My problem is, that after around 2-3 games I exprience a sudden decrease of FPS down to around 20-30 and it stays like that until I restart the game. Furthermore, on some occasions, sometimes also related to tabbing out of the game and back in, the sound slowly starts to stutter and FPS start t o decrease until my system becomes completely unresponsive and requires a restart.

Below I provided the Launch Options (found some of them on ProtonDB) that I use for Steam and some logs with some error data (although I have no idea if they are relevant). I hope someone can assist.

GPU Screen Recorder UI forcing games closed

26. November 2024 - 16:07

Hi! I just installed GPU Screen Recorder, as well as the UI for it, both of which are great. The UI has a problem though. Whenever I press Alt+Z to bring it up, it minimizes my game. I notice that the window GPU Screen Recorder UI pulls up has the typical cinnamon title bar, where it is labeled as "gsr-ui". On the youtube video showing it off, this doesn't seem to be the case.

Notably, while the games are minimized, they seem to still be focused somehow, weirdly enough. When I have Minecraft open full screen and I press Alt+Z to bring up the gsr+ui, Minecraft is minimized and the GPU screen recorder UI can't be clicked. When I Alt+Tab back into Minecraft, it turns out that Minecraft was still recognizing my mouse clicks, as I'm now in a different menu even though the game looked minimized. I also was unable to switch to Minecraft just by clicking on the taskbar

It seems that Cinnamon is treating gsr-ui as a typical window, instead of as an overlay. I suspect that there's some issue preventing gsr-ui from attaching itself to existing windows, although I don't have any idea what this would be.

I am on ArchLinux, using Cinnamon with Mutter (Muffin) WM. Using an RTX 3070 TI. Everything is up to date as of writing.

Lessons learnt building for Linux & Kindly test if game works now (Real-Time Strategy)

26. November 2024 - 15:59

Hey there, I am gamedev working on Linux, using Rust+SDL2. My game is on itch.io here: https://filmstars.itch.io/hypercoven
Give it a spin if you’re into Real-Time Strategy, and let me know if it worked for you or not.

I was for the longest time afflicted with a certain hubris concerning my Linux builds…
I couldn’t even set up the build process on Windows at all since that OS is so shit, eventually went with GNU/MingW instead to cross-compile for Windows and never had any problems with that. So my Linux builds must be pristine, right? Absolutely wrong. They have been unusable for most users for the longest time, it turned out.

So for any other devs who care, list of issues encountered:

  • libc incompatibility. It seems Rust makes some attempt to not link against too recent symbols in libc, but regardless, when compiling on a system with bleeding edge libc versions (btw i use arch), the odd symbol slips in and then the whole binary is broken on more conservative distros like Ubuntu. The solution here is to use steam’s excellent build containers (runtime sdks) together with the "cross" tool and podman, to cross-build on Linux... for Linux, but older glibc.
  • libssl/libcrypto incompatibility. The excellent steam runtimes all have libssl1.1 unfortunately, while some opinionated distros (like Ubuntu) nowadays ship ONLY libssl3. This is not a problem when running the game through steam, because steam ships the exact libraries that are in the build container. (That is the whole point.) But to un-brick the game for outside the steam environment, one solution is to configure the rust crates that link to libssl, to instead use rustls. (Via feature flags. It was the reqwest crate in my case that linked to openssl.) If you’re using C or C++, idk what to advise you. Maybe static link?
  • Executable format. I still didn’t get to the ground of this, but it seems that some desktop environments or file managers have their own idea of what an executable looks like, and will not just let you doubleclick any old ELF binary. I am shipping an .sh file now that calls my actual binary – it seems this is the most universally accepted way.
  • Concerning the browser version: Chrome on Linux wrongly reports WebGPU support. This leads the wgpu library to attempt initialising WebGPU instead of WebGL, and then failing, because Chrome on Linux does not actually let you initialise WebGPU. I added a very hacky condition on the user agent string to work around this… Meanwhile Firefox on Linux doesn’t support WebGPU at all. All good, neither does it claim otherwise. But how then to test WebGPU at all, if you are developing on Linux? The only anwer currently is Firefox Nightly.

Thinking of ditching windows in favor of Linux for a gaming laptol, which dirstro would be best for this laptop? Said laptop: MSI Bravo 15 C7VE

26. November 2024 - 15:53

Hey there!
So i'm thinking of "abandoning" windos in favor of linux however i only used the steam deck for a little more than half a year as my only machine, so that is all my linux experience. Which was suprisingly good even in desktop mode.

If i'm correft the cpu and gpu are the main factor:

AMD Ryzen™ 7 7735HS
NVIDIA® GeForce™ RTX 4050 6GB GDDR6

If not directly recommending a distro, which would be fine, how can i search which one has decent drivers for this setup?

First i'm thinking on installing it to an external ssd, to see if it works or not before switching.

Also sorry if it was already asked and answered before, truth to be told i haven't started "googling" things up yet, linking another post would work for me as well.
I've only searched on youtube and checked out a few videos regarding this.

Thanks in advance!

Lower performance after GPU upgrade than before.

26. November 2024 - 11:04

Hello,

Recently, I swapped my RTX 2080 for a Radeon 7900 XTX. On Fedora and Nobara, performance in Counter Strike 2 and Helldivers 2 was lower with the new AMD card than with the old Nvidia card. (Minecraft did see a substantial performance increase.) On Windows 10 and Pop!_OS on the other hand, the performance of CS2 and HD2 was as expected with the new card, so I suspect that the problem lies somewhere with Steam and/or Fedora based distros.

Fixes I have tried: • Updated mesa and vulkan • Switching from Wayland to Xorg • -vulkan as Steam Launch parameter • Power mode to "Performance" • Disabling Steam overlay • Turning on/off Shader pre-caching in steam

What else could I try?

Specs: GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 7900 XTX Vapor-X CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X Mobo: ROG Crosshair VIII Hero WiFi Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 4000MHz 2x16 GB PSU: bequiet! Straight Power 10 800W

I have used the latest packages and versions of as of 24. November

Thanks in advance!

Audio only works in cutscenes

26. November 2024 - 09:22

I've tested a bunch of games, on multiple linux distributions (trying nixos unstable rn but willing to switch to another if this can get fixed - on linux kernel 6.12 with mesa 24.2.6) but I get no in-game audio for most games. A notable exception to this is the binding of isaac rebirth. But everything from systemshock to palworld, to spyro reignited seem to not work. For whatever reason, they do (sometimes) play audio in the opening credits/cutscenes. I'm on a lenovo yoga 7i with an intel core ultra 155u if that helps with anything. Every distro I've tried uses pipewire. I'm at a loss because I can't find anyone else with this issue so I don't even know where to start with, I see a lot of people with the inverse issue (audio works in-game but not in cutscenes), but not this.

I'm currently using the native steam package but I did try flatpak when I was trying to get fedora to work with no luck. I've tried multiple proton versions including GE with no luck.

Here's a log from systemshock if it helps at all, thanks!

Error when launching non-steam game

26. November 2024 - 09:16

It worked on the first launch, but all subsequent launches have yielded this error:

[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; no appID found.

Either launch the game from Steam, or put the file steam_appid.txt containing the correct appID in your game folder.

pid 106552 != 106551, skipping destruction (fork without exec?)

Adding "steam_appid.txt" to the launch directory with a random, long number does not change this error.

Launching it from outside steam with wine does allow the window to open (albeit, it crashes after getting to the menu).

Non-Steam game SteamAPI_Init() failed; connect to global user failed.pid error

26. November 2024 - 08:43

I'm running a non-steam game, and it loaded perfectly fine on the first boot. However, when I tried loading it, again, I encountered an app id error, so I included a steam_appid.txt file in the root folder with the .exe and gave it the id 717968111102876582 to avoid conflicts. Afterwards, I encountered the error[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; connect to global user failed.pid 90404 != 90403, skipping destruction (fork without exec?). The failed.pid numbers change every time I try to load it.

After this point, the terminal shows a bunch of processes get removed for the game, and then nothing else occurs. Can someone help me out, here?

Edit: I have another non-steam game that still works, so the issue is specific to this game.

Edit 2: I relaunched steam again, and now adding the steam_appid.txt file is no longer working.
