I'm new to Linux and a bit confused

04. November 2024 - 15:35

Hi, I recently set up a virtual machine so I could get some experience with Linux mint, because I want to switch to Linux when I build my first PC. I downloaded proton and wine then I downloaded the war thunder launcher and I could not figure how to run the installer. Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Fallout 4 modding on Linux

04. November 2024 - 15:31

Hey all,

I am wanting to switch full time to Linux (Fedora KDE) since I don't need Windows for college anymore, and the only thing holding me back is Fallout 4 modding. The game is just SO much better with a bunch of fixes applied via Vortex. But, how would one do this on Linux?

Display Color Fringing fix on OLED (LG C3 in my case)

04. November 2024 - 14:49

Hey folks, I use Bazzite on my desktop PC for main gaming and general use purposes as I find it way more responsive.

But i'm having an issue with color fringing on desktop mode.

I do not have this issue in Game mode.

Anyone know of a way I can correct this?

One trick I know of that doesn't help me in this situation but does on my Steam Deck OLED... is to install the reshadeck decky plugin and use the 'DefringSamsungOLEDeck.fx' shader.

So I tried that out on game mode on my desktop and it gave me the exact fringing I get in desktop. Obviously not useful but information nonetheless

So with this info, is there a way to defringe desktop mode on my PC? Perhaps a global shader or id prefer a more permanent solution.

Thanks!

Can Windows (11) installations created with Rufus still break Linux systems on the same machine?

04. November 2024 - 13:54

I've created a bootable Windows drive using Rufus (sadly Rufus is only available for Windows; see the discontinued 'Windows To Go") and I plan re-installing to an internal drive -- I unfortunately need Windows for certain software and some PC games with specific anti-cheat.

Rufus can disable some hardware requirements of Windows 11, is able to create a local account and specifically has an option to "prevent Windows from accessing other drives" -- does this guarantee that I don't have to fix the GRUB after each Windows update (and the initial install)?

Gamescope still got blurry under XWayland with fractional scaling

04. November 2024 - 13:35

As its description, gamescope is a nested compositor under wayland to “catch” the window in XWayland and port them to Wayland. However, running gamescope on my ub22.04(gnome43.9) still got blurry with the apps under fractional scaling. Seems gamescope is still running under XWayland instead of native wayland.

However, neither gamescope and the app in it appears in xlsclients. This could indicate that it’s running under Wayland natively. But the app still seemed blurry.

Is there a solution for this, thanks a lot. I really confused by the fraction scaling under Wayland in GNOME.

Do you keep a windows partition on your gaming computer because of anticheat?

04. November 2024 - 13:11

Backstory:
I have a laptop that I use for my day to day usage.

However on my gaming desktop I've been running VFIO to always have Linux running in the background to not have a very powerful computer just go to waste by being turned off most of the time. The main game I'm playing however is PUBG and this has just not been playing nice with any of the settings I've found and about a year or more ago I think they more strictly started detecting VMs.

Then I started dual booting again and now I've just let it be windows only as it's too much of a hassle rebooting and not having Linux and certain services available while gaming.

So if it weren't for PUBG I would be running Linux 24/7 on my gaming rig.

Because of that I'm wondering if there are more people in my situation.
So: Do you keep a windows partition on your gaming computer because of anticheat?

Need advice on bash script deciphering

04. November 2024 - 12:51

Hey guys, I m trying to install open-source native Linux game. It has a bash script for installation. But I won't be glad if it breaks my system. I'm new in bash scripting, so I want to know:

1) What happens.

2) How to uninstall the app.

Here is the script:

#!/bin/sh IFS_BACK=$IFS IFS=' ' appname=`basename $0 | sed s,\.sh$,,` dirname=`dirname $0` tmp="${dirname#?}" if [ "${dirname%$tmp}" != "/" ]; then dirname="$PWD/$dirname" fi LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$dirname export LD_LIBRARY_PATH $dirname/$appname "$@" IFS=$IFS_BACK submitted by /u/Ok_Lengthiness_6591

Binding of Isaac:Rebirth Failure to launch

04. November 2024 - 12:41

Hello everyone,

So the log: https://pastebin.com/BqhsiJsK

I am on Debian 12. Drive has plenty of space. 64gb of Ram. Nvidia Card from hell, with their drivers installed. AMD 3600X processor. The log from this is using Proton Experimental.

Oh and more importantly this is from steam, loading as a steam game.

I do find this error interesting. 97178.286:0134:0138:err:wgl:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo couldn't initialize OpenGL, expect problems

But I am new to all this. I have attempted to use different versions of proton and they crap out as well.

Garry's Mod freezing and crashing

04. November 2024 - 12:00

Whenever I try to play gmod on arch the game would be running fine and then all of a sudden freeze. I tried using the x86-64 bit version with the GModCEFCodecFix and the game ran perfectly fine in singleplayer with no issues at all but when I tried to join my friend's game the game would just instantly close when I was about to load in. The steam overlay also doesn't work when using the 64bit version even though I have it enabled. I've tried switching between proton versions and such and nothing really seems to work. Im not sure what causes this and my laptop which runs linux mint runs the native version of gmod with no issues at all.

OVR Advanced Settings and Chaperone...

04. November 2024 - 11:21

Could anybody with a vive-like headset be so kind and confirm for me that if you save a chaperone profile in Windows, you can switch to Linux and open the same profile there? ... And it is all turned the right way inside the headset then?

This is the final thing that locks me to windows and I don't want to shuffle my whole file system again, only to try this specific thing and it doesn't work in the end. Reason being, for me and my Vive pro, the sound wasn't working properly (but there seem to be fixes for that) and the room setup craps out because of the compositor. But using OVR adv would be like a 2 click solution...

Linux Mint emulators will not recognize 8BitDo Ultimate Controller.

04. November 2024 - 09:07

Hi, everyone. So I followed the instructions in this topic to make my 8BitDo Controller recognized as an Xbox controller by my Linux Mint PC to use with emulators: https://gist.github.com/ammuench/0dcf14faf4e3b000020992612a2711e2

This had been working perfectly. Dolphin, mGBA and Rosalie's Mupen Gui had used my 8BitDo Controller just fine weeks ago. Now today, none of these emulators will even recognize the controller when it is bluetooth-connected to the PC. I cannot even map its buttons. According to the emulators, there is no controller.

Would someone please help me to reverse the changes that the Github page created in my system? I think I should work from scratch and reverse the changes to then try to get my controller working. T

And if you can provide any guidance on getting my 8BitDo Controller working again, I would be extremely appreciative. Weirdly enough, my Xbox Controller does not work with the emulators either. They refuse to recognize it to map buttons as well. Thank you in advance.

DualSense weird behavior

04. November 2024 - 09:04

So I updated Linux Mint to 22, booted up Dishonored and started getting this weird behavior that it's like my right stick is being pulled up time to time. I thought it might be the touchpad, I turned it off, the problem persisted, so I launched the second game, same story. I connected the gamepad to playstation, it's working fine, so clearly it's not the stick drift

Steam downloads 1GB+ updates every day for the same games

04. November 2024 - 08:25

Steam downloads updates in the range of 1.2 to 1.8 GB for Satisfactory, Deadlock, and FFXIV every time I start my machine. I'm guessing this is some kind of shader thing, but I'm not sure. They aren't required updates, as I'm able to pause or cancel them and still play each of those games.

I'm running EndeavourOS. I'm hoping this is a known issue with a straightforward fix, but if not I'm happy to provide detailed system info.

Looking for GPU Core Temperature

04. November 2024 - 08:11

As the title states...
I have a 7900XTX running on Bazzite.
I have absolutely zero issues with it, but I'm wondering if there is a way to see the GPU core temp.

I'm already using CoolerControl, and I have LACT. Everything is working, but there is only Edge, Junction, & Memory temps, unlike say HWInfo or Adrenalin which shows all of that plus core temp. Sensor-Detect doesn't show anything extra.

I don't exactly need it, but I'd like access to all my metrics if possible.
Is this just something missing from the driver?

Some strange issues with Heroic Launcher

04. November 2024 - 07:34

So I recently learned about Heroic Launcher on this very sub and when I tried it on an old test rig made of 2017 era hardware, it worked great. However, on my actual gaming rig, I seem to be having a strange problem.

My operating system (Mint 21.3) is on a separate drive from my games. The game drive is about half of a 4TB NVMe drive that is shared with Windows. I have it mounted on boot to ~/Games. It works fine in Steam. I added it as a Library and set it to default and games install there under the path ~/Games.

Not so Heroic Launcher. When I try to set the default install location and browse to ~/Games and select it, the path that actually appears is /run/user/1000/doc/ce1b91e7/Games and when I attempt to install a game to this location, it says the drive may not be writable.

Manually typing /home/<user>/Games/Heroic into the settings results in the game going....nowhere? And being unplayable and uninstallable. I had to uninstall Heroic and manually delete the ~/.var/ files associated to make the game finally appear not installed.

The games drive in my older test rig is a 2TB HDD dedicated entirely to the Linux install for games. It is not shared as the test rig is not dual booted as my main rig is and is also configured similarly to that in my main rig to mount on boot to ~/Games. I had considered the issue might have something to do with Heroic being a flatpak, but that's not the problem because flatpak is the only option available to install without downloading a .deb and it's a flatpak on the test rig as well and it works fine.

Does anyone know why I might be having a problem setting this drive as an install location in Heroic Launcher?

EDIT: So I have another, smaller SSD that I also have a few games on. It is also dedicated to the Linux install for games but it is only a 250GB SATA SSD, also mounted on boot to ~/GamesToo. This also works perfectly in Heroic Launcher, though I must add that browsing to it in the settings yields a similar path to the larger drive, so I guess that's not an issue. It is weird though that it defaults to the normal path ~/GamesToo and not the /run/user... path. Is the problem somehow that the drive is partitioned? That would be a strange problem indeed, as it has no adverse effect on anything else in the system. Does Heroic Launcher need to be given permission somehow to write to this NVMe drive?

EDIT #2: Lutris does not seem to have this problem with this drive. It seems to be specific to Heroic Launcher. I don't understand why this is happening and honestly, Heroic Launcher is easier to use and would rather be using that for my GoG games. Does anyone have any ideas?

I switched back to Windows and I'm disappointed in myself...

04. November 2024 - 06:41

As the title implies I switched back to Windows from Arch because I personally feel like I can't leave Apex (yet) or I'm not ready to...with more and more games dropping online multiplayer support I've increasingly felt the pressure... I used to play Fortnite too but I was willing to trade that for Apex at the very least..

In fact I would have never tried to daily Linux if it weren't for my access to Apex.

Using Linux (Debian and Arch) for the past two years, creating github repos and bash scripting so I can have a system up within half an hour completely ready to go with zero issues or bugs has made me fall in love with Linux.. I also grew extreamly accustomed to window managers.. I got to a spot I was so proud of as well.... I could continue to complain "there's no Linux support and the devs suck for it" but that's just leaving me bitter to be frank..

I really hope Linux continues to grow and I'll still be sticking around with my laptop and possibly duel booting arch to test things out.. But I'll just have to use this monopoly OS as my main gaming OS for the foreseeable.

I am a little concerned about privacy.. Used https://privacy.sexy to limit the amount of telemetry Microsoft may be harvesting from me.. I'm also using chocolatey for the majority of my installed software which is nice as a Linux user.. Using alacritty as usual..

Going to eventually figure out and customize GlazeWM and Zebar so I can have a somewhat i3 alike experience but I know it doesn't hold a candle to Sway, i3 or Hyperland..

Anyway I know this will be downvoted but I just wanted to share my addiction.. Thanks for reading this far if you did!

Samsung Odyssey G8 Monitor Not Giving 240Hz option in settings

04. November 2024 - 04:38

I have an Odyssey G8 (G80SD) monitor. It is 4k, HDR, and supports 240 Hz. I am using Display Port. And in Windows 11 (same cable, graphics card, etc.) I'm able to select my monitor in the Windows display options and set it to 3840x2160 and set the refresh rate to 240 hz.

In Linux (I've seen it happen in Linux Mint Cinammon and now Fedora KDE Plasma) I can select 3840x2160 but the only refresh rate options I have are 30Hz, 60Hz, and 120Hz. The edid data (via monitor-edid) would seem to indicate that a 240Hz should be supported (VertRefresh 48-240, pasted below) Do I have to do something special to make 240Hz and option in the "DisplayConfiguration" in KDE? I am using an AMD 7800XT card. And I'll just reiterate that when I boot this exact same system to Windows I do not have an issue with 240Hz.
