Trying to run wine games throught steam

02. Mai 2026 - 00:28

Hi! I am a Linux noob using Mint 22.2 for the first time, and I am having trouble with every .exe games I download.

I can start them throught their respective desktop shortcuts, but for some reason I can't start them throught the .exe files??? They just won't do anything.

Subsequently, whenever I try run those games to steam to get the optimization benefits people told me about, pressing start just does not do anything either. I have zero clue of what is happening, or of what I can do to fix it TwT I am really frustated since one of the games keeps crashing in random moments when I take the L and just play it without steam

Sorry if this is a confusing or informationless explanation

Gnome vs KDE on a Latittude 5590

02. Mai 2026 - 00:05

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell Lattittude 5590 with i7-8650U 16GB of memory and Nvidia MX 130 with 2GB of dedicated memory and I noticed that KDE performance for gaming is far superior than Gnome.

I tested GTAV using Steam on Debian 13 on both Gnome and KDE, on Gnome I can play just if I lower graphic settings, on KDE it just works, I think it has something to do with wayland implementation, maybe it is supperior on KDE than on Gnome.

I also tested on lates Ubuntu 26.04 Gnome and even enabled NTSYNC to no avail.

Does anyone have any tip on how I can match Gnome to KDE performance since I prefer Gnome?

Kind regards,

Carlos

Emulated RT vs "normal" RT, there's any real difference?

01. Mai 2026 - 23:31

I don't know if it's the right flair, but okay.

I'm just curious. Despite the massive fps drop when emulating Ray Tracing on amd gpu, is there any real graphical difference when compared to Ray tracing itself?

I don't have a RT capable GPU, and I was wondering if you lose too much quality with it

P.S : sorry for my bad English, it's not my first language :p

Can somebody help me with this

01. Mai 2026 - 23:25

This is the Sonic Racing Crossworlds I obtained for the free weekend. It doesn't wanna start, which I find strange because on ProtonDB it says that it can run it just fine.

I tried a lot of commands to get it working, all also from the ProtonDB website.
mangohud %command%

PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 game-performance %command%

gamemoderun %command% -d3d11

None of these worked. Did the others have any luck? Is there some dependancies I need to install? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

What should i do ?

01. Mai 2026 - 21:58

I switched to cachyos directly without thinking much for gaming, i was using windows 11 earlier and had used linux mint/xfce lil bit. Now I'm satisfied with os switch and normal use case but in a werid position for gaming( especially steam). Le me explain- i use my clg lan and they blocked steam and many other things (deep packet inspection) so vpn,Cloudflare etc anything won't work.(nor on windows or any os) . The only things working on windows was vpn named (Hotspot sheild) it's free and really good but there is no way i can use it on cachyos . Now options i have is use ,vg2ray or simila other alter . which need fast vps (i just need to download game only ) hence money 💰. And as a complete broke i can't afford. If anyone know what else i can do except vps method or have solution for vps then I'd appreciate your help.

Btw i don't regret my os switch , 100x better , on windows my laptop fans just always used to explode for no reason and now getting way better performance and latency.

And why is brave using so much Ram comparison to other like vivadi and firefox?

Rolling back to Windows- never

Rocket League works on CachyOS (Heroic Launcher, Epic games store), areweanticheatyet says it’s broken?

01. Mai 2026 - 21:44

Rocket League works on CachyOS with Heroic Launcher (v 2.21.0), Epic games.

Solution

Launch game in Heroic launcher with anti-cheat enabled (default) and wine version: proton-cachyos-slr. If it pop-out epic games in web to sign-in, confirm it.

What I did before it made it work?

And before that I run Easy Anti-level cheat setup .exe just with launch (if it impacts on anything, not necessary step). Unlocked new item as newcomer, played online (when I used default wine-10.0-20260407 (CachyOS) it was all locked, because of disabled easy anti-cheat (2v2, 3v3,…) and earned item. On areweanticheatyet.com it says it’s broken… Try it out, didn’t expect it to work, but it does work this way if you use Rocket League on Epic Games.

PS: Didn’t tried Steam version, but this way I didn’t experience lags or any problems. Feels normal, snappy and responsive. Must admit I enjoyed it playing, but I’m NOT Rocket League player, but I game alot and all kind of genres.

First issue I've had I'm completely stumped by, input (keyboard/mouse) issues whenever Steam is open.

01. Mai 2026 - 20:57

I've had this issue for a few days after an update.

System information

System: Kernel: 7.0.2-2-cachyos arch: x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: niri 26.04 (8ed0da4) Distro: CachyOS Graphics: Device-1: Intel Arrow Lake-S [Intel Graphics] driver: i915 v: kernel Device-2: NVIDIA GB203M / GN22-X9 [GeForce RTX 5080 Max-Q Mobile] driver: nvidia v: 595.71.05 Display: wayland server: X.org v: 1.21.1.22 with: Xwayland v: 24.1.11 Compositor: niri driver: N/A resolution: 2560x1600~240Hz

I have updated one more time since then, everything is up to date.

Description of the issue:

  • Open steam, not necessary to have a game launched.

  • Attempt to use the keyboard, or click. It appears as if it's freezing, but the system is fine, maybe every third keystroke doesn't register, and I have to press it multiple times. Release events are the same, as in, I press a key, release it, but it never sees the release so it's as if I'm still holding it down. If I run evtest while this is happening, I can see that it indeed does not see certain keystrokes and key releases.

For instanceeeeee re's me tryni to type while having steam open, as you can see somekys done regier and some get flooded.

  • Closing steam causes everything to go back to normal.

Interestingly, if I simply close the window itself, but leave steam running in the background, this also fixes it. I would be content doing that until some future update fixes things for me, but the problem is that if I launch a game, even with steam only open in the background, the issue manifests again, and in certain games I Alt-Tab a lot because I'm reading a wiki or looking up how to do X or Y, and it makes it pretty dang frustrating.

Another workaround is using the LTS kernel, the latest one I'm currently using being 6.18.25-2-cachyos-lts. There are no issues there.

My instinct, or more like the obvious thing here would be that there's some display server fuckery, steam being open leads to input being lost somewhere along the chain? I'm not really sure where to even start to diagnose this issue. Would really appreciate any help. I googled for a long time, and found a couple threads on the Linux Mint forums talking about what sounds like a very similar issue, but they weren't helpful, it seemed like no one really had any ideas.

Side note, the first thing I suspected was Niri, as it had updated for the first time since February right before this happened. I downgraded it to the previous version. That didn't fix it, so I don't think it's to blame. Aside from that, I haven't tried anything else, it's the first issue I've had where I don't even know what to try, to be honest.

Thanks a bunch.

GeoGuessr Steam Edition - Small scaling / UI problems on a 4k display

01. Mai 2026 - 20:47

I’m running into some UI scaling issues on a 4k display and wanted to share what I’ve tried so far in case anyone has ideas how to fix it.

So if i run the game without any arguments, the UI is tiny and it makes it difficult to play.

First workaround, launch at 1920x1080: gamescope -w 1920 -h 1080 -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%

Result: UI scaled properly, but the game is blurry.

Second workaround, set device scale factor to 2: --force-device-scale-factor=2

Result: works, UI scales properly and high resolution, but now the UI flickers (not while playing, only in menus) and some UI elements are not working properly, for example i can't see anything when i expand dropdown menus so i have to navigate them with the keyboard.

Not really huge issues and the game is still playable, but would appreciate if someone has any suggestions.

  • Proton: CachyOS Latest (tried experimental to no avail)
  • OS: CachyOS (Arch-based), Kernel 7.0.2-2-cachyos
  • DE/WM: KDE Plasma 6 (Wayland)

AMD Radeon RX 9070 huge coil whine only on Linux. Solutions?

01. Mai 2026 - 20:24

I have a Radeon RX 9070 on a dual boot machine:

  • Windows: Very mild coil whine. Even if I run FurMark 2 to max out the card!
  • Linux: Screaming, whistling, and buzzing like a bee. It is audible in the whole apartment. On Fedora with default open-source AMD driver. The screaming changes rapidly based on camera angle in the games.

Theories about why they differ:

  • Linux and Windows default GPU power limits and boost algorithms are different.
  • Windows uses DirectX while Linux has to translate to Vulkan which changes the GPU load.

I have tried:

  • Installed LACT and set lower Power Limit. Instead of 250 watts I went all the way down to the lowest 170 watts. It reduced some of the high pitched bee buzzing but didn't do anything about the coil screaming/whistling.
  • I use FPS cap of 60fps on both Windows and Linux.

I am at my wit's end. I can't get it replaced under warranty because the noise is acceptable on Windows, and the store sold it as a Windows machine.

I am out of ideas.

Plasma shell crashing after playing modded Minecraft for a short amount of time

01. Mai 2026 - 19:50

I'm on fedora KDE plasma 43 and ive been getting this very strange issue where if I play my modded Minecraft world plasma shell will crash and freeze the game (not to mention both monitors turning off, everything freezing for a little bit before it all comes back) and I have to alt-f4 the game to close it. I had my system monitor up while testing and there was no significant usage, obviously my GPU was being used to 100% but my RAM sat around 40% usage total (64gb ddr4) so I'm really not sure what's causing it. I can get a crash log if needed

[HELP] Running into Out of video memory in Black Myth Wukong

01. Mai 2026 - 19:50

As the title suggests, I’m trying to run Black Myth: Wukong, but it keeps crashing. The game starts and gets to the shader compilation screen, but then it crashes with an error afterward.

System (laptop)-
cachyos
Kernel: 7.0.2-2
CPU- i7-9750H
GTX 1660 Ti Mobile

I tried lowering the VKD3D_MEMORY_LIMIT, but it didn’t help—the game still crashes.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

what games can I play? (Core2Duo t6600)

01. Mai 2026 - 18:55

I finally finished “setting up” an old laptop (making it work) and I was wondering if I could play something on it, the easier it is to “set up” the game and play the better. Thanks. Specs: 4RAM ddr2, HDD.

Does the Valve Hardware survey only detects one GPU?

01. Mai 2026 - 18:47

Today the survey poped out on my laptop and I realized it only shows the integrated GPU but not the dedicated one. Made me curious why.
