Switch to Linux, good infographic for distros?

02. Januar 2026 - 16:00

I have a laptop and handheld PC using Bazzite. Laptop will change cause their dev mode sucks, waiting on LinuxMint, hated cachyOS didn't behave smoothly. Laptop hardware is newer.

Anyways not discussing that I'm here for help with my gaming desktop. My goal for the month of January is to switch to Linux.

AMD 5800X, 3070.

I pretty much just game, watch content, and play with excel on the desktop. I don't want to tinker with my OS it needs to be stable for gaming, I'll keep a Windows drive as insurance (hope to never use it again) pretty much all the games/apps I use work on Linux or I can find new ones. Is there a nice up to date info graphic that shows the pros/cons of the popular distros for gaming?

I was thinking of Bazzite since I know it, however with that 3070 I'm just not sure what the best choice would be. Will probably be the first and last time I buy nvidia.

Lag issues on steam games after playing for a couple minutes (it varies from game to game however)

02. Januar 2026 - 15:57

Hello, I am currently on Linux Mint 22.2 after switching from plain ol' Debian. My CPU is a 13th Gen Intel i7-13700K, and my GPU is an RX 6600 XT, and as the title says, I am having issues where Steam games encounter diabolical frame drops, most notably in the 2 games I play, which are Team Fortress 2 (running with native steam runtime) and Cyberpunk 2077 (proton experimental).

To be specific, in Cyberpunk 2077, the lag spikes occur after an hour of playtime, and in TF2, the lag spikes occur once there are too many things on screen (eg, players on fire or just plain ragdolls ragdolling and whatnot). Considering my specs, I don't think this is normal, and I have tried the traditional fixes of setting gamemoderun or LD_PRELOAD launch options to no avail (specifically in TF2 since it doesn't require me to sit for hours for the lag spikes to kick in).

I have been using different Linux distros for 11 years and have never seen this before, so any help is appreciated :D

Download speed through Steam on Linux about half what it is under Windows

02. Januar 2026 - 15:41

I ran a speedtest on Linux, I get around 2Gbps. But when I download through Steam, it always hovers around 100MB/s, even if I change to next nearest server. Sometimes it'll go even lower. I thought it was holiday throttling by Steam, but when I went into Windows to test, Steam is downloading around 200MB/s there.

Any ideas? I've tried some Google "fixes" (found some Steam console commands) but they didn't improve anything.

Can't seem to fix Expedition 33 audio stutter.

02. Januar 2026 - 14:19

So I started playing Expedition 33 and the audio constantly stutters during combat and cutscenes. I looked around online for a solution and found that setting the sampling rate to 44100 should fix this issue. But when I set the global sampling rate in pipewire config to 44100, pw-top shows that Expedition 33's sample rate is still 48000. I even tried forcing it with

pw-metadata -n settings 0 clock.force-rate 44100

It changed everywhere else except Expedition 33.

I also tried the launch option (with different values)

PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=50 %command%

and

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b"

I also looked around in Proton Tricks, but I didn't find an option to change the sample rate there.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I have ClairObscurFix installed for uncapping cutscene FPS, but the audio issue was there before.

I'm running Arch with Linux kernel and KDE Plasma (Wayland).

While playing Dota 2 audio stops working if I am focusing on another page and then go back to the game

02. Januar 2026 - 13:58

And the solution is to restart the game which is not really practical while playing a multiplayer game.

Is there a solution to this?

While playing dota 2 the steam windows randomly opens

02. Januar 2026 - 13:57

So I am not talking about the overlay of course but about steam windows taking the first position on screen. So it is like when a windows restart or reload and that appears in front.

How do I fix this?

Is it possible to play Star Wars: Tiny Death Star on Linux

02. Januar 2026 - 13:43

Hey guys, I don't know if any of you ever played Tiny Death Star, but I really liked it.
It has been some time since I played it, and I thought that I wanted to play it again.
I thought about installing an apk of the game, because the official version got taken down.
Sadly I couldn't get it to work on my android phone with Android 16 and I saw that there was also a Version for windows which maybe could run on Linux, or maybe I could run the apk somehow on Linux.
If you have any ideas, please let me know, it would make me really happy to play it again :D

Error message about radv regarding Vulkan

02. Januar 2026 - 13:28

Hello there,
Happy New Year 2026, everyone!

I've encountered this error message in a few games, which appears from time to time in the logs, and even though I've never noticed any consequences, I'm still intrigued.
I'm using an AMD RX 9070 XT GPU, running Fedora 43 KDE.

Is this message worth paying attention to? And if so, what steps can I take to try to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - stuttering

02. Januar 2026 - 11:55

I'm suffering from time-to-time stuttering in this game and I don't know why. E.g. in the vatican, if I enter a pathway, fps drops to <20fps for a moment, just to revert to > 60fps, even without moving.

Strange thing is, lowering settings and resolution, e.g. from QHD (native) to FHD didn't do much. Performance based instead of quality based upscaling doesn't do much too, so I think it's not my ingame settings (tried to reduce other settings too - raytracing is completely turned off)

I read about it on ProtonDB, and the main things there is to use the "AMD Pro"(?) driver. I'm not savvy enough to install multiple drivers side-by-side. And as a further interesting observation: When the game saves, it doesn't stutter (so it doesn't seem to be my ssd).

Could anyone give me a hint on how to improve this game's performance?

My specs:

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma/Wayland
Ryzen 7 3700X
AMD 9060XT 16GB (Mesa 25.3.1)
32GB RAM

Cyberpunk 2077 on Nvidia - the game seems crashing after few seconds

02. Januar 2026 - 11:18

Hi,

Looks like Cyberpunk 2077 now crashes on Nvidia - I'm on 580.95.05 drivers and tried a plethora of protons, from latest GE to Hotfix and Experimental, alas all crashing.

Any idea on how to possibly fix this?

Thanks!

GTA V Enhanced black screen on launch.

02. Januar 2026 - 09:03

GPU: RTX 3060 | Driver Version: 580.95.05

CPU: i5-10400f

RAM: 32Gb DDR4

Monitor: 2560x1440p 320Hz

Distro: Linux Mint 22.2 | 6.14.0-37-generic

Just recently, I went to play GTA V but when it launched it showed a black screen and would get stuck there forever until I force closed it. I just recently installed GTA IV and got enhancement mods and thats when I couldnt play gta 5. It used to work perfectly fine for months up until now.

Heres what I've tried so far:

  • Setting GTA V Enhanced launch options: -w 1280 -h 720 and -w 2560 -h 1440
  • Uninstalling GTA IV (Seeing if there was a file conflict)
  • Verifying GTA V file integrity
  • Using launch options: SteamDeck=1 %command%
  • Restarting PC and Steam

Sometimes it would launch but even then it would just have a screen ripple effect and my mouse would be laggy. When the game does rarely launch the resolution is correct. (2560x1440p 320Hz)
