i have the mediatek 7822 on this board, and i can not for the life of me figure out why it wont use my wifis 5ghz or 6ghz bands like on windows.

do i need a new card or a usb dongle? ethernet is not a option and its gonna be non starter if i get slower internet on linux.

The reason why people claim games are running better on Linux, and why sometimes it is true

15. November 2025 - 01:59

I've seen lot's of noise where people claim Linux can run games BETTER than on windows, not as well, but better.
As much as knew at the time, I thought it is scientifically impossible since proton has to make a conversion to run games on Linux where in Windows games run natively, videos like comparing Lenovo Legion Go S steamOS vs Windows, show the result but makes it feel like the process behind it is just "Proton Magic", and makes a ton of noise
I created a thread and many of the answers were great but still got some of that linux magic where people can't explain why is their experience better, the solution I came up with was too big for a answer so I'm creating a new post

Alright, after doing a lot of homework, reading the replies, and doing some research, I could understand what is going on
Just checking off, performance on AMD is way better than Nvidia in Linux, that's a common fact, it wasn't about that, but it's nice to remember

Are there unfair comparisons? yes but it's much deeper than I thought
Some people mentioned windows is bad because of bloatware. Yes, but if you are going to make an effort to install something like arch linux please at least open task manager to turn off auto initialization to make it fair, mentioning that boot times on windows takes 50 seconds, means that are some real problems in there

Starting from the biggest unfair comparisons, it actually comes from people doing on mobile hardware like Lenovo Legion Go S, and people spreading like it's an universal truth, it isn't
Proton on Linux has an amazing feature: instead of like Windows where the CPU needs to constantly be compiling shaders, steam has servers with those shaders pre-compiled, so you don't need to waste CPU power and it comes with the game download, it's from this that comes the 1% low, that many of you mentioned in the comments,

Why does this matter?
Mobile hardware tend to limit power supply to the CPU - GPU for battery management and simply not having a power supply
That creates a problem, now in Windows the CPU needs to compile shaders constantly in new areas, but the CPU doesn't have as much power as a dedicated machine, so a problem that would be little noticeable, only a casual stutter/1% low, becomes a GIGANTIC problem in Windows mobile machines

Coming back to dedicated machines
There are some other advantages, where games CAN run as well or sometimes a little bit better than windows, Vulkan DXVK, is an amazing thing, DirectX11 was created in 2009 with a focus on single core CPU, but even on recent games it still is being used, and many of the "Benchmark Games" like Witcher 3 uses DX11, Bethesda games uses it too, so as mentioned by some in the comments, modding can become a hard task, From software games like Dark Souls, and a great part of even Elden ring.

So why is Vukan DXVK amazing?
it converts this process so instead of using a single core, it uses multi-core, so the performance gains are HUGE, to be comparable even though you need to convert instructions from windows games to linux, where you lose performance

Windows updates are more than once mentioned, it shouldn't really be a problem, there are ways to circumvent this, and it's more annoying than anything else, constantly having to update arch linux for example is just as annoying, but it is more fun. Before I forget, as mentioned in the comments, linux distros focused on stability will have lower performance simply because it uses older solutions for stability.

TLDR:

Mobile hardware is way better on linux simply because of power limitations, it is not an universal truth

Steam compiled shaders cache, is an amazing solution and solves a lot of stutter/1%low

Proton loses some of the performance compared to windows since it needs to convert the instructions
5~15% worse than Windows

DX11 is converted by Vulkan from single core to multi-core, huge gains
10~20% better than Windows, so it can regain some of the perfomance lost

it's important to mention that these can vary, a game can have clear instructions and be easily be converted as mentioned in the comments by u/Oerthling , so it gains tons of performance, or a game can be really well tuned for single core cpu so it doesn't gain much from DXVK for example

Proton does have a translation overhead, it needs to convert Windows system calls and DirectX instructions into Linux equivalents (via Wine, DXVK (dx11), and vkd3d(dx12)).

Windows itself has a lot of API and driver overhead, especially with DirectX 11 and older titles. In many games, the inefficiency of Windows’ graphics pipeline is worse than Proton’s translation cost.

So even though Proton theoretically loses some performance, it often ends up matching Windows due to Linux’s lighter drivers, Vulkan backend, and massive shader pre-caching system.

I think that's pretty much the answer I was looking for, thank you all!

What's the simplest way to use Wine/Proton in a multi-exe use case?

15. November 2025 - 01:34

Hi, although I'm not new to Linux, I'm pretty new to Linux gaming. Recently getting started with Bazzite on PC and also Steam Deck.

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around game use cases that have more than one exe:

- Modded games where you use a launcher or mod manager (eg. Unity Mod Manager)

- Games that come with their own launcher. (eg. Trails in the Sky FC, GOG version.)

It doesn't help that there's also Lutris and Heroic that do their own custom things that aren't really clear.

Is there any direct and simple way I can do something like this? :

- Directly create a Proton/Wine environment for a game. (Prefix?)

- Install the game into the environment.

- Install or copy all the mod files, launchers, etc into the environment.

- Run any of the exe files in the environment, and have it all work together as expected like in Windows.

Is there any documentation out there that explains how Proton/Wine works at a deeper level? (For users, I mean. Not the nitty gritty of how the emulation works etc.)

Thanks!

ADB is crashing?

Fedora 42 KDE: Skyrim SE is running Terribly *(sub-30fps just on the main menu alone)*

15. November 2025 - 01:05

I am at a loss to my issue, and so I turn to the interwebs for a solution. Google has yielded nothing, and all my tinkering has left me with more questions than answers.

I decided to move my Skyrim SE setup to Linux to finally flip the bird to Microsoft. I am on Fedora 42 with KDE as my environment. Installation of everything looked go so far, but the moment I ran SkyrimSE, my framerate JUST IN THE MAIN MENU was an abysmal 20fps with frametimes at 40ms minimum. (These results brought to you in part by MangoHUD)

There is no way in Oblivion this could be a hardware issue, since I'm running a Ryzen 9 9950X *(Not X3D, if that helps)* a Radeon RX 7900XTX, 128GB of RAM (Yes, I know it's overkill, but I use Blender also, so...) and more than enough room on the NVMe SSD I'm installing on. I'm talking 2+TB of space. To further the fact that hardware isn't to blame, CPU AND GPU usage was operating at almost 0% I am fully aware that the 9950X has an iGPU built-in, but even *that* isn't being utilized, according to MangoHUD and Steam's overlay. I've tried switching Proton versions, disabling Vsync in the .ini files, and this is a purely vanilla experience, at least for starters before I push down the line to modding, so I am dealing with no ENBs, no SKSE, just Skyrim that is so vanilla it's not even squeezed out of the bean yet. Despite every proton command I tried and every trick I saw on the interwebs, I was still never reaching above 30fps.

Now here's the really fugged part: I've had the game long enough that I have Legendary Edition. Out of morbid curiosity, I installed that on the same drive and tinkered with nothing just to see what would happen. To my surprise and complete bewilderment, the framerate was right where it was supposed to be with frame times that actually made sense.

Being at a complete loss as to how to fix this, I am pleading for an answer from anyone who has greater Linux knowledge than myself.

Travamento aleatório em jogos com Nvidia 580

15. November 2025 - 00:24

Guys, in any game I test, this happens at some point: the game simply freezes, and I have to turn off the PC and turn it back on. There have been days when it didn't happen and I could play normally, but just when I thought the problem was gone, it happens again. Note: Vulkan games also have this problem.

I believe that after the 580 driver update, these random freezes started occurring. I was using Cachyos and then also Fedora 43, which is my current system, and I had this problem with both. I didn't make any modifications to these systems besides the recommended ones; on Fedora, I installed the driver from the store. I tested on Windows 11 to try to identify if the problem was with my hardware, but I didn't have any problems there.

What I've already tested:

- Disabling Steam's recording system

- Running games with Vulkan

Is anyone else having problems or knows anything I could try?

Sorry if I didn't explain it well, I'm still a Linux noob hahaha

Bye bye save data

14. November 2025 - 23:31

So, after reading some comments under my last post, it seems like keeping steam os is the better choice, but how can i restore my save data? Some games are pretty old or can be found for pretty cheap on code resellers, so the issue is definitely not getting back my games, I’ll just buy most of them. But how about my save data?

I’m coming from an Xbox, so the only way i could buy digital games is via the Microsoft store. Theoretically, if I: -install a secondary windows partition on the steam machine via external drive, -set up windows there with all my games -back up the save data with Xbox play anywhere -back up the locally downloaded save data on the Linux/steamOS partition -then steamOS should save my save files in the cloud. I will manage to successfully restore my save data.

This is all a Theory (A LINUX THEORY) but it should work… if any of you have a better idea on how to save my files, I would really appreciate it, thanks!

Entire system freezes

14. November 2025 - 23:26

- RTX 4070

- 5800x3D

- 32 GB Ram

I've tried several different distros, looked and tried different solutions such as disabling c-states and lowering my ram hz. It can happen 1 minute in, or two hours in. When opening dolphin or playing a video game. I want to give up so bad, but I want a HTPC so bad. I don't know what to do. I tried a year ago as well, making reddit posts and posting crash logs that were almost impossible to obtain as my system constantly froze to no help. I have absolutely ZERO issues in Windows 11.

Mouse wheel skips in Minecraft

14. November 2025 - 22:50

Hi! I’ve noticed that my mouse skips over the hotbar and other scrollable elements in Minecraft. It’s not a hardware issue — I tested multiple mice and the problem persists with all of them, and its ONLY in Minecraft all other apps are working correctly. When I boot into another Linux installation (which is also Fedora 43), the issue does not occur, so it seems specific to my main system.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks for any suggestions!

By the way, I’m using Prism Launcher for Minecraft.

Switching from Windows to Linux for Gaming

14. November 2025 - 22:24

Now that the Steam Machine is releasing it has gave me confidence it switching from Windows to Linux.

Before I do though I have some questions.

Is there a Distro good for gaming or will any do the same job?

Do I just have to leave the games I bought on Microsoft Store since they are UWP?

For games like GTA V that have Anti-cheat, Should I just dual-boot or use a VM?

Arc raiders mic not working - Mint

14. November 2025 - 22:07

Bought arc raiders last night and for the life of me can not get my mic to work. It works in every other game/software I use it on, it has permission, i have my mic selected in game, i tried open mic and ptt. Tried proton experimental, GE, 9, and 10. All same issue.

First raid we were getting hit by one of the rocket things and my teammate called an elevator. It arrived and i booked it inside not realizing that It had an auto leave countdown so I ended up abandoning both my teammates by accident. I listened to them both call me a douchebag for leaving and couldn't apologize lmao.

Anyway any help would be great.
