Lutris games FPS locked to half of monitor's Hz in Lutris games, but not on Steam games

02. April 2025 - 10:19

Hello, hello!

I've been trying to troubleshoot this one for a few days, but so far no luck.

The problem: my system seems very confused about how to work with the GPU on games launched via Lutris. I use Proton-GE (latest) usually.

I'll use 5 games to showcase the issue:

  • Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew
  • DOOM (2016)
  • Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed
  • Metro 2033 Redux
  • Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

Shadow Gambit works perfect as is. I get constant 100+FPS with or without Gamescope.

Both DOOM and Epic Mickey lock themselves at 37 FPS, which is half of my monitor's refresh rate (75Hz).

Here's where the headaches start.

DOOM runs at 37 FPS with around 25% GPU usage; except if I go into GNOME Overview, then I see the FPS jump to almost 200 (which is around what I should be getting with my rig), and GPU usage with it.

The behavior seems to happen in general when the window itself is not focused (e.g. when I use GNOME Screenshots and it goes back to DOOM's main window, it briefly jumpst to 160+ FPS). Gamescope does not help with the problem at all.

Epic Mickey runs locked at 37 FPS even in GNOME overview. But with Gamescope I can get it running at 60 FPS. Also, it has low GPU usage just like DOOM.

At first I thought it was my GPU (Intel Arc B580), which I am aware has incomplete support. But Metro 2033 Redux launched from Steam works perfectly, 130+FPS with everything maxed.

Age of Empires II (also from Steam) runs at constant 125 FPS.

There's an extra caveat. Epic Mickey was running at 75 FPS just fine last week.

System specs:

Vulkan support: YES
Esync support: YES
Fsync support: YES
Wine installed: YES
Gamescope: YES
Mangohud: YES
Gamemode: YES
Steam: YES
In Flatpak: NO
[System]
OS: Fedora Linux 42 Workstation Edition Prerelease
Arch: x86_64
Kernel: 6.14.0-63.fc42.x86_64
Lutris Version: 0.5.19
Desktop: GNOME
Display Server: wayland
[CPU]
Vendor: AuthenticAMD
Model: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D 8-Core Processor
Physical cores: 8
Logical cores: 16
[Memory]
RAM: 31.3 GB
Swap: 8.0 GB
[Graphics]
Vendor: Intel
OpenGL Renderer: Mesa Intel(R) Graphics (BMG G21)
OpenGL Version: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 25.0.2
OpenGL Core: 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 25.0.2
OpenGL ES: OpenGL ES 3.2 Mesa 25.0.2
Vulkan Version: 1.4.304
Vulkan Drivers: Intel(R) Graphics (BMG G21) (1.4.305)

Things I've tried:

  1. Lowering the graphical settings, just in case. But no, the 37 FPS lock stays in place even with a resolution of 1280x720.
  2. Different runners (The default WINE GE, Steam's own Proton version, Proton-umu).
  3. Added DOOM as a non-Steam game to Steam.
  4. Disabled VSync.
  5. Both OpenGL and Vulkan rendering.
  6. Made sure my system is in Performance mode, not in Power Saving mode.

Any ideas?

CachyOS, Bazzite or another one ?

02. April 2025 - 10:08

Hi everyone !

I'm currently doing some testing using dual boot with the objective to get rid of Windows completely.

So far I have tested Garuda Linux and CachyOS. I'm really happy with CachyOS but I have seen lot of people speaking about Bazzite.

Is there any big difference between the two ? Or would you recommend another distrib?

I use it equally for gaming and usual browsing/desktop usage.

Does the distro matter?

02. April 2025 - 07:29

Hi I want to switch from Windows to linux fully the only thing holding me back is gaming.

I already have fedora as dual boot and I am very unhappy with it because my Audio just doesn't work and I cam't figure it out.

Does the distro matter if I am comfrtable with the terminal?

Are there aome distros which are just better for gaming and or nvidia cards than others?

I wanted to try Arch with gnome but i am not sure for gaming.

Also i will need to redownload all my games in steam right?

SDR brightness slider and HDR gaming KDE

02. April 2025 - 06:25

Im playing Silent Hill 2 remake on Cachy os with an RX 7900xt on an LG 27GS95QE. Im using the launch command :

DXVK_HDR=1 gamescope game-performance -f -W 2560 -H 1440 --hdr-enabled --force-grab-cursor --hdr-debug-force-output -- %command%

This gives me what looks like proper HDR. What confuses me is that the sdr brightness slider that is sitting at 275 has an effect on my HDR content. It goes up to 600 nits but maxxing this out makes my HDR look really bright. Could be because this is within gamescope? Should i ignore?

Ubuntu server 24.04 ATM 10 Minecraft server error messages

02. April 2025 - 06:13

I recently set up a Minecraft server on Ubuntu 24.04 but am running into issues when loading chunks. Here’s what I did:

  1. Installed Ubuntu 24.04.
  2. Created a new directory and navigated into it.
  3. Downloaded the Server mod pack ATM 10 from Forge’s website.
  4. Ran startserver.sh.

Everything seems to start correctly, and I can join the world without any issues. However, when I fly around and start loading new chunks, I get the following error messages in the server console:

just after joining the server https://mclo.gs/z4JHMdJ

start up and what errors i get when i fly around the world log https://mclo.gs/JljgLdt

Did I miss any necessary setup steps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I'm getting this error only on Steam Deck, but not Windows. A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment

02. April 2025 - 04:53

While playing Modded Minecraft I've been experiencing crashes at certain points. It's only happening when I have a specific mod installed, but only on Steam Deck; it works fine in Windows. Because of this the author of the mod, thinks that my Graphics Drive is out of date. Here's a link to the issue discussion: https://github.com/Qendolin/better-clouds/issues/192

I updated my Steam Deck which is supposed to update the drivers, but it's still happening, so is Steam Deck not updating my graphics drivers and is there a way to tell?

I read in another thread in this subreddit that it's from using the wrong Java version. It's crashing while using Java 21.0.3 (I'm using Prism Launcher and the Minecraft version is 1.21.5). Here's the crash log: https://mclo.gs/yJov1FT

CS2 is running with very low FPS

02. April 2025 - 01:52

I have about 80 FPS on CS2 on linux, while having 250-300 on Windows. Here is what I have - Arch Linux with KDE Plasma running on Wayland.
- Ryzen 7 5800x3D - RX 7650xt

here is all the Launch options I tried

SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=x11 %command% +fps_max 0 -vulkan -nojoy -novid -high I am playing on a 144 Hz 1440p monitor, I also have a 60Hz 4k on the side.

I would want to ditch Windows entirely, but because of this issue, I have to keep the my dual boot setup.

CS2 DX11 vs Vulkan

02. April 2025 - 01:20

The reason I even did this is because I don't really see people talk about it much Or even do benchmarks too often So I'm doing this to bring back some light on the subject GPU: GTX 1650 4Gb CPU: Intel Core i5 10400f RAM: 16Gb DDR4 ///////////////////////////// My main PC runs Fedora 41 KDE and one of the reasons I switched is because I heard that CS2 has native support Littles did I know it was poorly optimized in terms of it's vulkan implementation which is a real shame since I really do enjoy it I took a few screenshots of how bad and annoyingly unoptimized it is And yes I took these on Win11 on My brother's PC (we share the same specs) But the Vulkan performance is basically the same on my PC last time I checked DX11 on High around 72~ FPS meanwhile on Low 180~ FPS Vulkan on High is around 40-60~ FPS Meanwhile on low it's about 60-80~ FPS There's a lot of graphical glitches and bugs Real shame that a game like CS is having this :(

Steam window (occasionally) interfering with mouse inputs when behind target window.

02. April 2025 - 01:10

Using KDE Plasma 6.3.3 on Arch Linux kernel 6.13.8-arch1-1.

For a while now I've had an issue where my mouse clicks do not register in a window if the steam window is open behind the window I'm trying to interact with. The inputs typically get passed through whatever window I'm trying to interact with and instead interact with the steam client. It does not happen consistently, does but happen regularly I'm trying to click something in a firefox window that is in front of the steam client.

Due to it being pretty sporadic, I've not had any luck trying to figure out what exactly causes it to happen, but it has happened for a long period of time now over many KDE and Steam updates and versions.
