RX 7800 XT in the context of my set

21. Mai 2025 - 18:02

Right now my setup looks like this: Ryzen 5 5600 (non-X) Asrock B450 Pro4 GTX 1660 Super 32GB RAM (4 x Patriot Viper 4 Steel 3200 MHz CL16) Monitor: DELL 2412M (24", 16:10, 1920 x 1200) Running KDE Neon, and I’m not really planning on switching to another distro.

I’m not looking to change the whole platform for now — maybe I’ll upgrade the CPU at some point, if it actually makes sense. I’d like to swap the GPU for an RX 7800 XT. I also finally want to switch to Wayland, but NVIDIA is a total mess with it.

I play quite a bit, but I’m not chasing super high frame rates or refresh rates. Usually I’m good with a stable 40–60fps, and recently I’ve even been playing at 30 without it feeling like a disaster. I don’t play online games, only single-player stuff.

I’m also thinking about getting a curved monitor, something around 34".

Based on all this — do you think buying the 7800 XT makes sense? And if not, what would you suggest instead?

Thanks in advance!

CS2 sound randomly goes out

21. Mai 2025 - 18:00

When I'm playing CS2 and another sound plays (like a Steam notification or Discord mute), my game audio cuts out! Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. When it does, my headset gets no game sound (not even showing in KDE settings), so I have to switch the audio output to speakers, then when i switch back it still gives no sound. To get the sound working again i have to restart the game.

I am using Arch Linux with pipewire i also have sdl_audiodriver=pipewire in launch settings in cs2 with gamemode. It also happens to my friend aswell using cachy os

Would appreciate advice on Nvidia with a dual monitor set up (one gsync and the other not)

21. Mai 2025 - 17:27

Hey all, I use an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 with an Nvidia RTX 3070. I have one gsync monitor which is 1440p 165hz and another monitor which is 1080p 60hz non gsync. I started with Mint, discovered there was an issue with X11 and gsync when operating two monitors but using gsync on one. This made me try Kubuntu and KDE Arch because KDE uses wayland and I thought this would allow me to play a game with gsync and then have discord on the other screen. I then discovered that because I use nvidia i can't use gsync at all if using two screens because this is something nvidia need to fix, but AMD has already sorted this out. So now i am basically back at square one. Is there an alternative set up that people use? I have read a lot of posts on forums and reddit about this but no one says what they end up doing in the end as the next best alternative. I know some people run some kind of script that disables the second monitor if gsync tries to enable itself but keen to hear what other people do.

Also, if i disregard the above issue I actually prefer cinnamon over KDE plasma. I have read that cinnamon is better for nvidia GPUs as it requires less resources but to me it feels a bit faster and looks a bit simpler. I appreciate that KDE is more modern and customisable but i find it really ugly sometimes. BUT cinnamon is older and is less likely to keep up to date compared to KDE. Am I at risk of missing out on anything worthwhile if I choose to stick with Cinnamon. If in the future i choose to get an AMD GPU i will probaby need to move to KDE. For now is it worth sticking to Cinnamon on an Nvidia GPU and saving system resources at the cost of not keeping up to date with features from KDE?

To summarise, two questions:

  1. What do people use as an alternative to Gsync on an Nvidia GPU? Do people just disable one monitor to take advantage of gsync on the primary monitor or not use gsync at all?
  2. Is it worth sticking to Cinnamon on an Nvidia GPU and saving system resources at the cost of not keeping up to date with features from KDE? If it is just personal choice I will likely stay with Cinnamon until i get an AMD GPU to take advantage of the VRR dual monitor set up.

A short clip of Into The Grid's upcoming demo update running on the Steam Deck :)

21. Mai 2025 - 17:26

From time to time I share updates of our game here, since we are working on native support for Linux and, by extension, the Steam Deck and we always received great support form you all.

I was trying a dev build this morning and felt like sharing this short clip because I love this animation :D

If you want to give the game a look check out the Steam page. This clip is NOT from the curent demo, but the one we will release in a couple weeks, so feel free to try the current one and see the difference afterwards or join us directly during Next Fest!

GTA4 Audio Problems

21. Mai 2025 - 17:13

I try to play this game, it runs, but audio is kinda squeaking/crackling a bit (it's like it has a subtle "interference" granular noisy sound during playback; I don't know how to explain it better).

I run the game in Steam with Proton Experimental and args: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" gamemoderun MANGOHUD=1 %command%.

FusionFix was installed.

I tried to tinker with pipewire-pulse and pipewire configs, but to no avail. I tried to run the game with args WINEALSACTL=1 and PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 but to no avail again.

The changes I made in pipewire-pulse:

nice.level = -20; rt.prio = 99;

pulse.min.req = 256/48000

pulse.default.req = 512/48000

pulse.min.quantum = 128/48000

In pipewire.conf per se:

default.clock.rate = 48000

default.clock.allowed-rates = [ 44100 48000 ]

default.clock.quantum = 512

default.clock.min-quantum = 128

default.clock.max-quantum = 2048

default.clock.quantum-limit = 4096

Please help, I don't know how to fix this.

21. Mai 2025 - 17:02

I've just installed Debian 12.1 on this new laptop, and tried to do some gaming on it, but every time I try to, this kind of thing happens in every game no matter what I do. Does anyone know what this is or how to fix it?

Nothing works?

21. Mai 2025 - 15:35

So, I am completely new to Linux, and installed Mint on this notebook to see if it could run some stuff better.

I installed Lutris and Steam to play some of the games I played from time to time. I used Lutris to play games from Epic Games Store, I run it, and it it verifies updates, and closes.

With Steam, I installed it from the Manager, then opened, and nothing happened. When executing it from the Terminal it just says that Steam is already running.

Any help?

Building a gaming PC, need help finding a motherboard with working Wifi on Linux

21. Mai 2025 - 14:41

I'm currently planning on building a new computer with Linux Mint to game on. I've chosen almost all parts, but I can't find a motherboard that fits. The problem is that I need the motherboard to have Wifi, since there is no ethernet where I live to connect to. I've looked at a few motherboards with Wifi but they don't work on Linux because of the chipset.

The hardware I have for the computer right now are:

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 7600
  • GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 7600 8GB
  • RAM: Corsair 32GB (2x16GB)
  • SSD: Kingston NV3 M.2 NVMe 2TB
  • PSU: Corsair RM650e ATX 3.1

Is this good for a Linux gaming PC? Or should I change some of the components?

I need the processor to have an AMD AM5 processor socket and a DDR5 internal memory type, to match with the processor.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a motherboard that would fit with this hardware? Or a tool/website where you can easily check which motherboards Wifi functions and what kernels they need

Thanks!

RX 480 or GTX 1060

21. Mai 2025 - 14:13

Hello people. I’m building a budget Linux gaming machine to play BeamNG.drive, Forza Horizon 5, studying and whatnot (the games run fine on my laptop with ubuntu and proton but since its got integrated graphics theyre meh), and Im considering either the RX 480 (£58/$77) with 8GB VRAM or the GTX 1060 (£60/$80) with 6GB VRAM

The RX 480 is basically an underclocked and cheaper RX 580 with a £15/$20 difference

The rest of the build is a Ryzen 5 3600, 32GB of RAM, and both NVMe and HDD storage. I’ll be dual-booting Windows and probably Ubuntu.

I’m leaning towards the RX 480, as I’m a bit worried the GTX 1060 might struggle with future games, especially considering that nvidia killed off CUDA for pascal gpus recently and their drivers are not the best. I’ve heard that AMD cards generally have better linux support.

Both cards are from reputable sources, but just wanted to ask if anyone’s had experience with either of these (or the RX 580) on Linux? Will I be fine with 6GB VRAM in the big 25?

Thanks in advance

P.S. I've been using linux on countless machines in the past few years and my current laptop is dualbooting windows 11 and ubuntu so I'm familiar with linux.

EDIT: i will be playing on either 1080p or 900p depending on if i can get my 1080p monitor working

Troubleshooting games

21. Mai 2025 - 13:17

Hi everyone, I switched to pop os since my windows is back asking for TMP2.0. I have a steam deck at first and was pretty amazed on how it can play games that are only for windows. They did an amazing job. I can play mostly any of my games but some, like Rainbow Six Extraction, are not working. I looked on protonDB and it's playable. Even on my steam deck it's playable. So I'm wondering, what is the most effective way to troubleshoot? I started steam in terminal and looked for errors but cannot find a solution. Some thing with X11 and maybe with the overlay (even if they are turned off). All packages are up to date. I can't find the solution to my problem.

Is there a way to make Nvidia GPUs work more properly on Linux?

21. Mai 2025 - 13:16

I understand that there's no official Nvidia driver support on Linux, thus there are graphical issues when gaming on this OS. But I do wonder if there are work around like using Wine, a virtual machine, or some application that helps make GPU work properly. In this way, I won't actually need to get an AMD GPU.

At the very least, I'd like to be able to make the Steam OS/big picture mode not have the sub/side menus glitch out when I'm using GPU-acceleration (disabling it would make the menu laggy).

Los santos red doable on linux?

21. Mai 2025 - 13:08

Like the title asks would it even be possible? A lot of the mods needed have their own apps thats needed to even get the hooks and api's installed correctly on windows and im just wondering if its remotely possible to get the entire thing done. If it is, what are the steps needed in order to get it done correctly, as i know modding on linux still has a long way of catchup to windows in terms of user friendliness for those who are extremely linux literate
