Dragon Age Inquisition Controller Working

22. Juni 2024 - 01:04

I was able to get the controller working using this MOD Standalone Linux Controller Mod.

I ran the game with Fedora 40, Nvida 3080TI, drivers 550, and installed the mod, launching the Steam game with the mod command WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm=n,b" %command%

I was actually surpised at how well it looks and plays. The sound is great too. I was able to play in 4k and the game lets you adjust the text to be larger. I linked my Steam to my EA account. The game fetched my 2014 game data from my Playstation play through on DA2.

The game is on sale right now at 90% off. This game is a steal at this price. AND it works very well with Linux.

Looking for a gaming distro recommendation, currently on Kubuntu

22. Juni 2024 - 00:19

Recently I have made some tech support posts and one of the common themes in the comments was that Kubuntu is not ideal for gaming. So I am looking for what you guys think is the "ideal" distro for gaming.

"Ideal" means that it is able to run as many games/platforms out of the box as possible with as few bugs as possible. An ideal build would require very little tinkering and futzing around, tracking down issues, etc. You get the picture. As much native compatibility as possible. Software and driver updates should be easy and should not require detailed research.

I have an AMD 7600x with a 4070ti video card. I use Steam, GoG, EA, Epic.

I have been a windows gamer for most of my life and I would describe my familiarity with Linux as "novice." i.e. things that might be obvious to an experienced linux user will not be obvious to me.

I have been on Kubuntu for about a month and I like KDE plasma. I have tried Mint and PopOS in the past and did not really care for them, I am not sure why. I like that KDE plasma has lots of features and is highly configurable, like windows.

Please let me know what you think the best distro might be for me and why ... if someone just comments "arch" and doesn't give an explanation, I will probably just ignore it. Thanks very much for your time!

Unable to play DX12 games in Lutris without running GE-Proton. But it becomes worse than a slideshow when they do run?!

22. Juni 2024 - 00:13

Hi all. Got a really strange problem at the moment with any DX12 game. The two I have installed at the moment are Avatar Frontiers of Pandora (through Lutris via Ubisoft Connect), and The Talos Principle 2 (on steam).

Talos Principle 2 will start on Steam, I've tried multiple Proton versions, but the game launches, but at like 0.005 FPS. It's worse than a slideshow. I'd say almost it;s about 5-8 second before I see a new frame on the screen!

In Lutris, I get straight up "Unsupported DirectX version. Please verify that you are not running in compatability mode or download and install the most recent DirectX End-User Runtime". If I change the runner options in Lutris from say, Wine-ge-8-26 to GE-Proton (Latest) or a Proton version I have installed to use with steam, then the game will run, but at ridiculously low fps. similar to how the talos principle 2 runs on steam currently.

I'm on Fedora 40 distro, everything updated, RX7800XT, and a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 64GB RAM.

I'm new to Linux so apologies if there is something extremely obvious that I've missed. I've also downloaded numerous versions of dxvk and vkd3d to try via protonup-qt and put them in the runner options of Avatar in Lutris to see if that would do anything, but unfortunately not. :(

Painfully slow load times in between starting the game (DRG), loading into the lobby and loading into a game with players on Linux

21. Juni 2024 - 22:46

Hey guys, I am not new to Ubuntu but am new to using Steam and Proton and just gaming in general on it. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue I am describing and from the videos accompanying this post. The game is running off of an NVMe drive and I have tried both my AM5 and 9th gen intel boards, both behave the same way. I also tried Proton 9.0-2 and Experimental and both do this. I didn't speed up the first video so you can see how bad it is. Once I am loaded into the lobby or an actual game, it plays just fine no issues or lag unless I mess with the volume (second video) and the game does THAT. Not sure if that is related to the problem but it sure is interesting. XD And I don't think this needs to be said but on Windows 10 the game would have loaded into the lobby in the first 10 seconds of the video.

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Steelseries Apex Pro Keyboard on Linux - Can I get all the features if I have another computer with Windows?

21. Juni 2024 - 22:02

I can install the software on my backup laptop (with windows 10) and make any necessary changes and then plug it in to my Linux PC. Will I get all the full features out of this keyboard by customizing it in windows first?

How can a game dev give back to the FOSS community game-wise?

21. Juni 2024 - 21:39

I said I'd make a weekly post for how our native linux game is doing.

The demo is right there, feel free to give us some feedback, join our nerdy discord server. It is the first time managing roles automatically and putting an on-board so... maybe feedback on that too?

Today on this penguin-friday we're talking about Bash being or not being a programming language, and about playing Bad Apple on the terminal. It makes sense in context (kind of)

But there is nothing new besides that. Welp... I guess that is it...

Oh actually, no, I can talk about things related to it too!

Open source is what allow us to make our game

In the discussion of open source tools, especially in gaming, we talk about how big companies develop them... how Valve invested in Proton and and KDE Plasma. How Canonical did take Debian and despite not being popular right now as a company for us penguin-folk in general, it is undeniable how they changed desktop platforms, so on...

But for us, small folk, we're doing it too.

The first time we put on a table how much it would cost to develop our game, it was around 3000 on tools alone, some were purchases, but 80% of it alone was the software I had a more formal education on, 3Ds Max.

To put on reference: We still haven't spent this much money, and we're currently scrapping for coins on some subscription services we might or not need.

Our game uses Blender from day one of using 3D, and just recently when it was being too slow for my workflow (I cannot state how much I hate uv mapping) we started using BlockBench and it is doing wonders.

To be clear, we're not against paying for services, much less buying one-time licenses, our engine is bought with (at the time) a one-time license, and we're making a product that we'll eventually sell and break even. Ideally if the game sells, we'd like to definitely make donations and even pay for features we'd like.

But we're two dudes with ADHD hoping we'll be able to eat and not worry about if we'll be able to pay rent one bright day. So we're wondering what we can give back to the community?

Would you be interested in me writing articles guiding what to use it, what not to use it, and so on? Or maybe just an AMA next week?

Proton VKD3D 2.13 Released

21. Juni 2024 - 19:09
Features
  • Implement Shader Model 6.8 min-spec
    • SV_StartInstanceLocation
    • SV_StartVertexLocation
    • WaveSize range
    • Implement Vulkan texturing catch-up features (esoteric comparison sampling functions)
  • Implement interop for OpenVR / OpenXR on Proton
  • Correctly support NULL index buffers with VK_KHR_maintenance6.
  • Implement VK_MESA_image_alignment_control. Reduces memory bloat on AMD cards in particular.
Fixes
  • Reimplement VK_NV_low_latency2 to fix some issues with heavy stuttering caused by non-monotonic frame IDs. Relies on a more recent dxvk-nvapi which can paper over API design issues in Reflex API. Requires a more recent NVIDIA driver which fixes some bugs exposed in this new code. On older NVIDIA drivers, it should run, but low-latency will not kick in as expected.
  • Explicitly disable variable-rate shading when depth-stencil is written in shader. Fixes glitched hair rendering in Hellblade 2.
  • Correctly expose MSAA features for depth-stencil. Fixes Arma Reforger.
  • Fix bugs in MSAA resolve implementation when dealing with custom resolve formats. Fixes Arma Reforger.
  • Fix validation error in internal query resolve shader.
  • Fix some bugs in wave-ops where helper lanes participated where they were not supposed to. Fixes some WaveMatch / WaveMultiPrefix use-cases in the wild.
  • Various dxil-spirv fixes to fix invalid control-flow as always.
Performance
  • Tweak how we opt-in to ReBAR for UPLOAD heaps. Now, only > 8 GB cards will get it. On 8 GB cards, we were regularly hitting the upper limits of what the GPU could hold in VRAM, and using ReBAR would be detrimental to performance since there was risk of more important memory being demoted to system memory. Works well together with VK_MESA_image_alignment_control to free up significant amounts of VRAM. Performance gains from ReBAR on 8 GB were also found to be minimal compared to the larger GPUs since we quickly exhausted the limited 512 MiB budget anyway.
  • Sub-allocate small image heaps. Avoids heavy stutter in Ghost of Tsushima on desktop. (Steam Deck code path does not seem to use small heaps to begin with).
  • Improve performance with ROV when used with more complicated shader code patterns.
Workarounds
  • Implement a crude workaround for depth-stencil sparse and MSAA sparse.
    • Just allocates a committed resource instead. Not correct, but good enough band-aid.
    • Allows SottR to run on RADV.
  • Disable NV_dgcc on Halo Infinite on NV drivers.
  • Workaround a missing barrier in AC: Mirage causing random corrupt geometry.
Misc
  • Split vkd3d-proton shader cache up by .exe name when using a unified directory with VKD3D_SHADER_CACHE_PATH.
  • Implement VK_EXT_device_address_binding_report.

Will soon be testing the impact of this at the https://www.youtube.com/@xtremelinux channel.

HELP ME LINUX GAMERS

21. Juni 2024 - 19:02

HI, I'm new at this whole thing of using a computer, and for my disgrace it is a Linux.

I don't know how to install nothing in this OS. How can I install games that were made for Windows? and also put language patch to those games? and also play for free those games (wink, wink)?

It was easy when it came to managing to get free games or get a language patch in Wisdows, but Linux is a mistery to me.

Am I asking too much?

I don't relly want fancy games or something like that, I'll settle just with rpg maker games.

Elden Ring won't launch

21. Juni 2024 - 18:51

I'm on Nobara 38 if that matters.

I know people are having problems with the game as of the latest update, but mine won't even launch.

When I launch it on Steam, I get the Anti Cheat pop up, and then it closes and the Close button underneath the logo turns back to the green Play button. I've tried different Proton versions, but they don't work. I've also heard that some people had the issue solved by having the DLC, but that also isn't working...

New vegas not launching after installing mod organizer 2 onto it

21. Juni 2024 - 18:30

Hello,

I have been much of a distro hopper since using linux, and I have been able to install new vegas modded with mod organizer 2 for linux patch from github. The nxm might have not worked always, but mo2 worked at all.

I use manjaro, but this is by no means limited to the distro. I have tried vanilla arch and it ended up in the same results. I prefer arch distros,

Is there a way to fix this? is there a fix anyone has found that worked, or is it something that is to be waited out?

StreamDeck+ Support for Linux?

21. Juni 2024 - 17:51

I want to start using my Elgato StreamDeck+ on Linux too, not just on Windows. Is there any software that allows me to do this?

I have tried StreamController and Boatswain, but enither of them have support for the StreamDeck+.

Streamdeck does mention that if you have a StreamDeck+, you should use Boatswain, but Boatswain has a 10-month old unresolved issue about adding support. Either of these two applications does not detect the StreamDeck+.

Anyone else got this device to work on Linux? What software did you end up using?

Simple distro for my gf laptop, nvidia + wayland OOTB?

21. Juni 2024 - 16:54

Hi everyone,

Please don’t turn this post into a distro war,

My gf is so tired and angry of microsoft licence and account problems every time she want to play some minecraft, she plays the java version so with prism launcher like I use would be enough.

The problem is I work already as a sysadmin so I don’t want to be solving his laptop issues all the time, Is there any distro that supports wayland over nvidia out of the box?

Just for simplicity sake, I’m no trying to attach to x or wayland team, as it’s a gaming laptop it’s all the time plugged in so I want to be sure only the dedicated GPU is running.

Just asking for which do you believe would be a nice not rolling release distro with good nvidia support capable of just being a good and solid desktop environment?

Gpu is a rtx 3070, it’s an msi leopard laptop

Keep in mind she never used a linux desktop before, so the less tweaking needed the better.

Thanks!

Using multiple hard drives for Steam?

21. Juni 2024 - 16:43

Basically I have two nvme drives, a 500gb with mint installed on it, and a 2tb I want to use for steam. I know linux is funny about permissions, as I had to mount an external ssd to my home/shared folder to allow it to be seen by Plex.

So I tried the same thing with my 2tb nvme, and while I can install steam games onto it no problem, only native linux games will run, anything that needs proton just immediately closes.

So, how do I get my 2tb drive to be able to launch those games? I don't want to be limited to my 500gb drive. Thanks!

How do I use the XIVLauncher without breaking Steam?

21. Juni 2024 - 15:53

When I boot the XIVLauncher, steam thinks I am booting the FInal Fantasy XIV free trial and sets that as my status, and it gets stuck there until I force close steam with the KILL command. Even when I close the XIV launcher, Steam can't stop showing that I am in the free trial, so I cannot boot another game afterwards because Steam can't close the process telling it that I am in FFXIV.

Is there anyway to stop this from happening?
