Non-Steam gaming on linux
I am currently transitioning to Linux Mint. I read that it is quite possible (and very easy) to set up and play Windows games outside of Steam via Bottles. Am I right in thinking I have to install both Wine AND Bottles, or just Bottles?

Going back to Windows…
Sharing my thoughts here on my Linux gaming experience. First, a little background:
I love Linux and I hate Windows. Over the past two years I have went all in on Linux and the open source movement to get away from large companies like Microsoft and Google dominating the market, collecting all of our data, and shoving ads into every pixel of the screen. Every computer I own, and my home server, all run Linux exclusively. Office work, browsing, video conferencing, etc I have dumped windows and use Linux for all of it. Except gaming.
I have been dual booting my gaming PC with Windows and Linux (settled on Mint as it is my go to distro) for over a year. My experience gaming on Linux has been mostly fantastic. Most games run on there with little to no tweaking and they run just as well as on windows. I kept windows to have a fallback because if I am jumping on to game with friends, I don’t exactly have time for them to wait for me to troubleshoot why my game won’t run. Having that dual boot set up has saved many nights of gaming.
Now I love tinkering and constantly have new projects on my server or a couple of test machines I try things out on like new server services or new distros. However, when I fire up my gaming PC I am usually looking to play games, not fight to get a game running. The Linux community and the various distros have really done all they can to get Linux gaming off the ground and they have done a great job! Unfortunately it is just out of all of our hands that many developers just have Linux players as an afterthought if they think about us at all. I want to be part of the market share playing on Linux to help push developers but with me only gaming like 4-6 hours a week I just need my games to work.
I don’t game that much anymore but one game I do play frequently when I get on is Marvel Rivals. I’ve got the game to run pretty good for the most part but still constantly fight crashes, and the new update this week just crashes the game every time I join a match. I am hoping with the steam deck and steam machine picking up market share this will push developers to make sure their games run on Linux. For now I’ve upgraded my windows 10 PC to windows 11 (worked around the required online account part) and will keep the dual boot around to check in on Linux gaming over the coming months with the steam machine on the horizon.
I am a big supporter of Linux and will still continue using it on all my other machines but for now will be reverting back to a windows gamer. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for listening to my thoughts and please feel free to share yours!

BeamNG.drive won't launch after trying to force wayland in Steam launch options. Works perfectly without SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland. Running the linux binary in Fedora 43.
In Steam, it says it's running, but there is no window. And when I hit stop it freezes and I have to force quit.
Launch options are:
gamemoderun SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland ./BinLinux/BeamNG.drive.x64 %command%Any ideas?

RX 580: Windows 11 vs Linux CachyOS – Big FPS Difference
3090 on linux
I tried switching over but the performance loss was huge… when can I realistically expect the nvidia drivers to be as good as the amd ones? Should I just sell it and get a 9070 xt instead? I’d rather not tbh. Thanks in advance!

Steam input works in overlay but not ingame
My ps4 controller connects to my pc wired and through bluetooth just fine and are recognized by the ingame overlay, big picture mode, and games that natively support ps4 controllers.
When I try to press any buttons in games that require steam input to be enabled, nothing works except for the button to open steam overlay.
It used to work in the past but I noticed it stopped working yesterday for some reason.

Free To Use Start Icons I Made!
While not necessarily a gaming Linux post, I always felt as if, doesn't matter what DE, Linux felt so strange to me, aesthetically anyway. So I decided to make a couple of Start Menu icons to maybe uplift that situation for me via this "Ultra Luxury" pack, if you will.
For stuff especially like KDE Plasma and Asus ProArt, they are trademarked designs and in no way do i want to take away from that, but rather show appreciation to those brands.
Requests and critique are always welcome. I made these icons for personal use so who knows, they might be faffy.

WoW Lost Window issue on CachyOS Gnome
Hi All,
I'm newer to Linux and have been trying to get gaming on it. I'm a big wow player and got WoW Running with Faugus pretty easily. However, after installing addons I ran into an issue where I'd launch the game, and could hear the music, but the actual game wouldn't show up on my screen. Alt tabbing would show that WoW was open, but I couldn't select it or navigate to it at all.
After a lot of tinkering, the best I could get was to open the game with the -windowed arguments and then in game convert it to windowed (fullscreen). This isn't really ideal though, and I'm trying to figure out what I can do to change it.
My research has shown a couple of options:
- Using Gamescope to create a fixed window for it.
- My concern here is I tried something that I think is similar where I forced it into a windowed screen that was the resolution of my screen in the Winecfg in Faugus, but it caused Battle.net to not launch at all. I think it was because the Wine change was applying to battle.net and not wow, and therefore caused Battle.net to crash.
- Using Proton-GE instead
- I'm kind of new here, but I think I'll try this but I'm not sure this will work.
- Use a different DE
- I'm using Gnome, and in the past I've had trouble with Gnome and Graphics card management. What I'm reading is that this lost window issue could be due to Gnome not using the nVidia 2080 I have and instead using the iGPU and it failing because of that.
I would really like to stay on Gnome if possible, but trying to see if what other options there might be and if there's any silver bullet that might help me here.
Thanks,

Mac mini clover pit
Hey guys, I’m incredibly new to Linux. I turned my 2013 Mac mini into a mint matte machine. I downloaded steam and clover pit but whenever I start the game, it doesn’t start and the game crashes before it starts. I’ve tried various proton versions but always the same result. Is it maybe a video card issue or am I missing something simple? The game even states that it runs natively on Linux.

Ghost recon wildlands does not boot on arch
EDIT: It was a issue with firejail. When i completely disabled firejail it booted
- Im on arch and running a AMD gpu & cpu
- I installed the hardened kernel (if that affects this)
- catting the version file for this game returns this "10.1000-200"
- I used ext4 for my partitions
- Im also running firejail and apparmor but the game does not boot with --noprofile so it should not affect this and also other games like marvel rivals work fine
Looking at other sites related to protonDB and ghost recond wildlands it apparently used to work but a recent patch broke this. Would this be correct?

Is BG3 single threaded? Low FPS issues.
5600x3d+3070ti - I have a single core pinned at 100%, but my overall CPU usage is 30% and my GPU is at 40%. Is this just the games design or a setting I might need to mess with?

My controller does not want to play!!
My controller is a Turtle beach REMATCH Core, TBC-2001-95. When i plugged it in to my Linux Mint PC, the controller vibrated, but the light above the XBox button will not light up. I tried plugging it into different USB ports, no luck. I tried all the steps in the following guide, but no progress at all:
https://www.siberoloji.com/how-to-set-up-gaming-controllers-with-cinnamon-desktop-on-linux-mint/
This is what I get when I run the utility mentioned in the guide:
The guide didn't mention having to reboot the PC. Any ideas?

NVIDIA on Linux?
I really want to move away from Windows and considered switching to AMD for an upgrade since it works well with Linux but did more research and seems like a 5070Ti/5080 is a far better purchase, especially since I use an LG C5 as my main monitor that only has HDMI 2.1.
Was curious how Nvidia performs on Linux and if the switch is still viable.

Is the Cyberpunk 2077 Mod Manager worth using? Does it work on Linux (I use Bazzite)?
https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/96 I want to download mods for Cyberpunk 2077 but want to have a mod manager for peace of mind (particularly with it helping automatically sort with a load order). From my understanding, generally, the best mod manager for games are their dedicated ones. Would this mod manager be good to use?
I'm also curious if this mod manager would work on Linux, as I use Bazzite (an offshoot of Fedora. It's akin to the Steam Deck's OS).

Help with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night on Proton!
Recently I got the urge to go back to this game, and I've had a heck of a time trying to get it working. At first I was getting an error about DX11 needing to be at level 10.0 to use the engine, then I figured out I could force proton 5.0 to get it to say "Fatal Error" instead. Finally, I can launch the game if I use `PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command` in launch options, but it looks like this no matter what Proton version I use. Anyone here had any luck with this game? My GPU is an AMD RX 6700 XT and I am running on Arch Linux.
