Looking to try Linux to resurrect 2016 Desktop

26. Februar 2026 - 15:27

Ive been scrolling threads and its hard to nail down a comment that suggests a distro that will be optimal for what Im looking for.

I have my old gaming rig, (i5 4690K stable OC, gigabyte OC 1070 Gpu, 32 GB RAM). its currently running Win10 but the update bloat is killing it. Id like to back to a few games I loved like SPTarkov/modded Fallout4/Skyrim/Doom Eternal/Witcher 3. I was going to just do a fresh install of Win10 to try and get some performance back but with SteamOS and the momentum behind Linux right now I was curious if I could squeeze better performance out of a linux distro or maybe the SteamOS option. Last time I tried Linux it was a Ubuntu version back in like 2014. I just want to mod F4 and finish the DLC of Witcher 3 i never got to for the most part. While i mostly did 90-100fps in F4 boston downtown destroyed that. Ive seen some posts saying they did better with Fallout 4 on Linux.

Facing Issues Modding Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout New Vegas on Linux

26. Februar 2026 - 15:03

I’ve been trying to try some new mods for Cyberpunk 2077 and FNV - as I previously held a small collection of mods (< 20 mods or so) - which was simple enough to manage manually. However, I’ve been wanting to try some of the collections from Nexus, and have hit a bit of a snug.

I’ve tried installing the following packages from AUR:

- nexusmods-app-bin

- vortex

Both can handle NXM URLs and collections thankfully - given their native installations being used. While Nexus Mods App was easier to download and install the mods with, it doesn’t support FNV and would not properly install all of the core dependencies from the collection (Welcome to Night City v2.31a), leaving the game a broken mess and launching in safe mode.

Vortex on the other hand is an utter mess. They killed Nexus Mods App and replaced it with Vortex (again) but made it so that it’s Linux only. The AUR package solves the issue, but it fails to recognize game folders and versions. I tried defining my Cyberpunk 2077 folder, which is under `~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Cyberpunk 2077/`but Vortex kept throwing "This directory doesn't appear to contain the game. Usually, you need to select the top-level game directory, containing the following files: bin/x64/Cyberpunk2077.exe"

Exiting the window still defined the game by the looks of it, but trying to add a collection throws an error regarding "version mismatch". Not to mention, when I tried installing some of the mods from the same collection on a fresh folder, Vortex would fail to properly unzip some of them (`7z’, `unzip` and `unarchiver` are installed) where I’d end up with filenames such as `bin\x64\plugins\cyber_engine_tweaks.asi` in my root Cyberpunk 2077 folder.

I did try installing Vortex to my Proton prefix using Protontricks - which worked well it started panicking about the hardlink etc. way of staging/installing mods, and handing NXM URLs - where because it’s running in Wine/Proton, Firefox/Zen would not redirect the download to it.

Does anyone have any recommendations or proper way of managing modding on Linux?

Copy game and files over from windows(11) to Linux(FedoraKDEPlasma)

26. Februar 2026 - 14:24

Does anyone have any advice on how to take my game and files(including mods, game saves, etc) from windows to linux? I used bottles to install the game that I would be running. Runs fine but I do not see that saved files.

Best Distro for Gaming?

26. Februar 2026 - 11:48

Summary: Which distro would be best for gaming with my specs (Rx 580 8gb + i5 6500 + 8gb ram). If I'm quite new to Linux. I'm considering Nobara, and maybe cachyOS, Linux mint, if I change my mind.

Details: I'm currently using Ghost spectre 11 Super lite (custom windows iso) as my daily driver on my main PC (rx580 8gb + 8gb ram + i5 6500). It runs my games fairly okay like cyberpunk, spider man 1 and ghost of Tsushima but the ram usage is a bit much and the CPU usage is also quite high (2.5 gb ram idle and like ~20% Cpu on idle).

I've been seeing Alot of news about Linux improvements and I want to switch to it. I've previously tried dual-booting pop!_OS around a year and a half ago. Didnt work, as grub couldn't detect my windows partition (same drive at the time).

I'm now considering completely switching over for a while and then I might stay if it works out. Currently I'm looking into Nobara, and cachyOS, Linux mint as alternatives.

I mostly play games like cyberpunk 2077, red dead redemption 2, ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man 1 and Mile Morales, sometimes Roblox and Minecraft. And other than games I watch anime and YouTube, maybe some Netflix on my browser. I don't care much about super recent titles or anti-cheat games (those kernal level anti cheats don't work with ghost spectre either).

I might use creative apps to learn some skills down the line. Although I'll figure something out for that later.

In your opinion which distro should I go for? Or should I stay on ghost spectre? From what I've heard and seen till now (YouTube benchmarks) it seems that Nobara might be a good option since cachyOS is a bit advanced. I've seen some benchmarks where Linux mint performed better than nobara. Although that was maybe only 1 video or something.

Would also appreciate a heads up towards potential issues I could encounter.

After a day Faugus refuses to start up on Bazzite

26. Februar 2026 - 09:43

Yesterday I have been using Faugus launching Epic games without a problem. This morning I started the computer (Bazzite OS) and after starting Faugus it is wants to start, the icon is showing up on the task bar and icon is jumping next to the mouse. However after 5 sec everything just disapears like I never wanted to start the flatpack.
I already checked the for updates and reinstalled Faugus which did not fix the issue.
Did anyone experience the same?

Genshin on Linux

26. Februar 2026 - 08:58

I've been playing Genshin on linux with minimal issue for the last 7 or so months. Unfortunately, it's suddenly completely stopped launching on my computer after 6.4 released. I was originally using the Heroic launcher, and tried a couple different versions of proton with no success. I read somewhere that I should try to use the Anime Game Launcher to get it working, however it has the same problem.

Is this related to my specific computer, or is this a known problem? It also happened when 6.3 released, however it had fixed itself by this point.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm using Fedora 43

Linux (cachyos) with nvidia RX5070 - works smooth, but with extra power draw.

26. Februar 2026 - 08:53

Comparing same game (wow) with same settings, I get weird power consumption in linux, approx 20W more than in windows. Could someone give me ideas what I can change?

I had too high power draw in idle mode (without games), it was cured by disabling adaptive sync in KDE. Still in games the problem persists.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion Streamrip file

26. Februar 2026 - 06:24

So I downloaded Marvel Cosmic via streamrip and I couldn’t for the life of me make it run on my steamdeck due to it having a game.exe and a launcher.exe. Does anyone know how I can resolve this?
