SSD being slow on linux
Hello everyone, for a little bit of context I must say I am using Pop-OS 22 with gnome DE and X server. I play some games that I used to play on the same computer but with windows, and the loading time has sky rocketed, although the gameplay itself is performance wise equivalent or even better.
My architecture is nvme holding on my / , ssd 3'5 1 for /home and ssd 3'5 2 for the games like steam etc...
But there is not only in games that it takes ages. I will list a bunch of things that are really slow to start: - Mozilla Firefox on the launch takes up to 5 minutes for the tabs to be loaded and accessible (I've tried the safe mode without extension and it's the same result, I also looked on etc/hosts but I don't know what to look for on this) - Steam games like DayZ takes ages to login into the game, and Guild Wars 2 launched either via lutris or steam is the same result for each loading screen, except the first one is the longest one - Steam application, installed in .deb has struggle with player profiles, I can't see them anymore and get a error code -100 instead. Aswell as the event or fest on steam, the frames where games should be presented are empty. I bilieve it is some kind of embedded frame and there is somehow a port thing issue ?
I cannot convince my friends to hop on linux with thoses issues of mine it's not selling it right.
Now that you have a bit of context I have already made some scan of my disks because on a linux gaming discord someone tried to investigate that way so here are the results, he said nothing was odd ``` [ 7.761473] ata6.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 7.761475] ata6.00: ATA-11: Samsung SSD 860 QVO 1TB, RVQ01B6Q, max UDMA/133 [ 7.761884] ata6.00: 1953525168 sectors, multi 1: LBA48 NCQ (depth 32), AA [ 7.765519] ata6.00: Features: Trust Dev-Sleep NCQ-sndrcv [ 7.765782] ata6.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 7.770058] ata6.00: configured for UDMA/133 [ 7.780124] ahci 0000:03:00.1: port does not support device sleep [ 7.780280] scsi 5:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA Samsung SSD 860 1B6Q PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 [ 7.780604] sd 5:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 [ 7.780621] ata6.00: Enabling discard_zeroes_data [ 7.780633] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] 1953525168 512-byte logical blocks: (1.00 TB/932 GiB) [ 7.780646] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off [ 7.780650] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [ 7.780664] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 7.780703] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] Preferred minimum I/O size 512 bytes [ 7.781036] ata6.00: Enabling discard_zeroes_data [ 7.788206] sdc: sdc1 [ 7.789125] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] supports TCG Opal [ 7.789128] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI disk [ 7.791631] r8169 0000:22:00.0 enp34s0: renamed from eth0 [ 7.791720] input: Kingston HyperX Alloy Core RGB as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:28:00.3/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.0/0003:0951:16DD.0001/input/input2 [ 7.842297] hid-generic 0003:0951:16DD.0001: input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.11 Keyboard [Kingston HyperX Alloy Core RGB] on usb-0000:28:00.3-1/input0 [ 7.842845] input: Kingston HyperX Alloy Core RGB Mouse as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:28:00.3/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.1/0003:0951:16DD.0002/input/input3 [ 7.842977] input: Kingston HyperX Alloy Core RGB System Control as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:28:00.3/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.1/0003:0951:16DD.0002/input/input4 [ 7.893488] input: Kingston HyperX Alloy Core RGB Consumer Control as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:28:00.3/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.1/0003:0951:16DD.0002/input/input5 [ 7.893554] input: Kingston HyperX Alloy Core RGB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:28:00.3/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.1/0003:0951:16DD.0002/input/input6 [ 7.893637] hid-generic 0003:0951:16DD.0002: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.11 Mouse [Kingston HyperX Alloy Core RGB] on usb-0000:28:00.3-1/input1 [ 7.893731] input: Corsair CORSAIR KATAR PRO XT Gaming Mouse as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.3/0000:03:00.0/usb1/1-1/1-1:1.0/0003:1B1C:1BAC.0003/input/input7

easiest way to bind left click onto your mouse wheel?
hello everybody, i just joined this sub and i've been playing with Linux Mint for about 7 months now.
i pretty much only play Path of Exile (+poe2) and i was wondering how to bind left click onto my cheap ass Logitech G305's scroll wheel?
on windows i've used x mouse button control or whatever and it works fine.
so wheel up = left click, wheel down = left click
bonus for adding a slight delay that the server wont kick me.
TY

Best Linux distro for a GTX 1070 that works out of the box?
Hello,
I got an old computer:
- i3-6100 - MSI B150M PRO VDH - GTX 1070
It is mainly for work, Unity 3D, visual studio, blender and photoshop.
I will install steam on it too, so it will be for making and playing games. So my question is:
what is the best linux distro to work with this GTX 1070 out of the box?
I read a few posts that said that the drivers are not supported anymore and that there are some problems due to the GPU itself no being correctly exploited, i wonder if there is something new that would save me, as it is my working machine i need a distro that recognize my hardware out of the box, so the switch takes me the minimum possible time.
Also, the distro needs to be the more "professional" possible so i can keep updating my softwares without problems.
Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Paradoks

Issues updating on arch
For some reason, whenever I go to update my system, it throws this error. I'm not 100% sure how/where to track these dependencies down though. Any suggestions?

Games I play in i5 10th, 16gb ram, igpu
Downloaded games from my previous reddit game suggestion recommendations for my specs. I really like this games (some running on low graphics but playable). Still looking for more recommendations that can be played in my specs (i5 10th gen, 15gb ram, intel UHD 620). Thanks!

Will Wayland eventually have better latency than X11 or it's design makes this not possible?
For the past months after switching from Windows to Linux (EndeavourOS), I began to do some gaming. At first, I immediately noticed that both in normal desktop usage and games, mouse input seemed off. Most noticeable in games, there was input lag.
Then after learning more about Linux, desktop environments, display servers and etc... I made a guide on everything I could gather about reducing latency on Linux but it all came down to one thing; Wayland.
Seeing various benchmarks, and latency tests, X11 always had the lowest latency and from most users, the experience was more responsive.
Upon learning more about Wayland, even with tweaks such as KDE's option to enable screen tearing, env variables and etc, there's somethings about it that are deeply integrated into it's design, like "muddy", "floaty" or more precisely, higher latency even on normal desktop usage because Wayland by design forces V-Sync on your mouse cursor for example.
For most people, this is such a non-issue. Even for gamers and more moderate ones, they maybe not even see the difference. But, this is coming from someone (me) who is very picky and also very competitive. This is one of the things keeping me off from daily driving Linux in gaming.
This post is more of a "has anyone had issues and found a way to fix it?" kind of post because like I said, this is actually a such non-issue and a very big nothing-burger for most people, but, I would LOVE to stay on Linux but this the ONLY thing that is bothering me (besides some games running worse or not running at all but this is a issue not related to Linux itself but the developers). And it bothers me because this may not ever be addressed or even "fixed".

Overwatch 2, it seems reliable in quick play, so this means I can play competitive
Sometimes the drivers crash catastrophically but lately none of that has happened. Am I in the clear? I tried journalctl but nothing came up. When it crashes, there's just like a garbled screen, like static from a old tv set but with random color dots all over the display. Should I be concerned about a hardware failure, or is this just a software bug?
Just to note, I did reinstall Linux anyway cuz I distro hopped to another desktop environment. No crashes yet. I'm on kde

Steam - Resource Usage
EDIT: THE PROBLEM - Waiting for downloads over slow internet.
I've got a little Debian server mostly hosting Minecraft servers (<8 players) and SMB for videos.
It's a HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini, i5 7500T, 8GB Ram (which I mean to upgrade to 16-32GB). It's supposed to be cheap.
I only have 50Mb internet.
I was thinking it'd be convenient to install Steam just to download game updates as soon as they release. Then the server allows transfers to my families computers, over ethernet, when they turn on (we aren't gaming / on PC all the time so the computers are off most of the time).
If I can't be signed in to Steam on the linux server and gaming PC at the same time I'll use a spare Steam Family Account to get the games with Family Sharing at least.
Is this a reasonable solution to waiting on long downloads after we arrive home from work / school and want to play ASAP?
Is running Steam in the background of this little Linux server likely to chew up too many resources?

Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, the end. Onto the next challenge!
Executable Running in Bottles Needs Permission to Create Folder
Starting with the tldr, I installed a game in a bottle, it runs fine. Trying to run an overlay (that runs the installed game) fails because it needs permission to make the logs folders.
I've checked read write and execute permissions and all of the folders are free to be read from and written to.
Now the full story. I play guild wars 2 and have finally (it's been months) figured out how to get it to run decently on linux. I've used both steam and lutris, and both work relatively fine. I however am not happy with things working fine (i'm running linux after all), so I need to get blishhud working on linux. if you aren't familiar with it, its an executable overlay that runs on top of the guild wars 2 executable, and is super useful. It also has several difficulties running on linux. I finally found a method (linked below) that should "just work". I installed bottles, made my bottles, installed gw2, made sure it ran, then added the version of blishhud. When I try to run it it stops after a couple of seconds. running in terminal gives this error.
thread 'main' panicked at src/logging.rs:14:35:
Failed to create logs directory: Os { code: 5, kind: PermissionDenied, message: "Access denied." }
I figured that I need to change read and write permissions for the folders, fixing that didn't fix the problem. If anyone knows what this issue is or how to fix it I would greatly appreciate the help.
here's the youtube tutorial I followed to set it all up.

Does vader 4 pro work on linux?
I want to buy a controller to play offline games and some fighting games, and vader 4 pro is exactly what I need, P/P.
But I don't know how good the controller is on linux, I searched for some posts, mostly it will work, but not like 100% working with all features.
I also saw steam deck's update for vader series to bind buttons C and Z, but is that it? Help me please, thank you!

Fallout: New Vegas not Working
So, on ubuntu, new to linux, don't really have any coding experience, and I have steam and proton, and I disabled shader precashing. When I run New Vegas, it opens, flashes the launcher, then closes itself. I've heard that people can play new vegas on linux, but I can't get it to work.

Basic question about adding game AND launcher EXE to same prefix
Hey all,
I'm currently using Linux as my daily driver and am trying to add WoW, currently on one of my Windows drives, to Steam on the Linux side.
I can easily just add the launcher exe and have it install inside of the prefix it makes, but I'm trying to just add the game that's already installed to save on duplicate installations for the time being.
Is there a way to add the game folder on the NTFS drive, along with the launcher and wow executables, to Steam without needing to re-install the game?
Sorry for the stupid question, but my googling hasn't come up with anything helpful.

Counter-Strike 2 freezes after Valve logo
The game launches natively without proton, but after the Valve logo it freezes and doesn't show any main menus, even though i can hear audio from what I assume would be the main menu. I tried making it windowed and no border in launch options, but it still had the same problem. I'm on Ubuntu Xfce

My Summer Car crashes at startup
Hi everyone! I've recently moved and am attempting to use my girlfriend's laptop running Ubuntu to play My Summer Car on Steam. The only issue is that I cannot get the game running. I have tried using the MSCLoader experimental Linux port on Steam which also makes the game run natively (to an extent) on Linux, though using this causes the game to crash without even opening. While using the Windows version of the game under proton crashes the game at the main menu. My display server is Wayland, though playing the game on Xorg has not solved this issue.
Any help is appreciated greatly! I will be happy to reply with any necessary information/logs that could help diagnose the problem.

SteamOS/Linux Support for 8Bitdo controllers
I bought an Ultimate 2.4G controller from 8Bitdo specifically because SteamOS is stated as supported on the product page. But other controllers I would like to get, such as the Arcade controllers or a newer Ultimate controller do not have SteamOS listed as supported.
Does anyone have non-Ultimate 2.4G controllers and have you tested them on Linux at all? Since they all seem to use a 2.4Ghz dongle, I would assume they would work just fine but I'd hate to spend money on a controller that doesn't work with SteamOS or Linxus in general as I'm hoping to finally ditch Windows for good.

Issue with uncontrollably snappy FFB with Logitech G920 on Linux
I’ve been having an issue with force feedback on my Logitech g920. The video demonstrates when I let go of my wheel while said issue happens. When driving, my wheel will lock to one side which means I have to force it the other way to stay in a straight line. For example, on a straight, if I move my wheel ever so slightly left, it will snap left, same for the right. When cornering, it also snaps to the direction of the corner, which is not how it should be.
After inevitably crashing after letting go, it stays locked with maximum force in the direction in which I let go, until I straighten it up again, and all force stops as I accelerate. The issue is consistent, and is happening when I play most driving games.
This issue has stayed over multiple distros (arch, mint, pop) and affects multiple driving games such as BeamNG, Forza Horizon 5, ETS2, etc, the only exception being Assetto Corsa with content manager, for some reason. This issue has only started since switching to Linux, and I haven’t had this on Windows.
Currently I am using Debian 13 (trixie) and I am hoping somebody on here can help me out! Thanks.
