Steam is looking for Nvidia drivers... when I have an AMD GPU??

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Aug 2025 - 1:49pm

i am beyond lost right now, but from what ive found after hours of debugging is that steam decided today that i have a nvidia gpu after a reboot, when my gpu is amd.

i have no idea why it did this, nor do i care, but id like to fix this as its kneecapped every single steam game i have.

i use ubuntu, and both the snap and flatpak versions of steam have this issue. this only happened today, steam has never had an issue like this before. the error message is listed below, and yes i am v e r y certain i have an amd gpu

pressure-vessel-wrap[6607]: W: Failed to load Vulkan ICD #0 from /var/lib/snapd/lib/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json: openat(/var/lib/snapd/lib/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json): No such file or directory

I got sick of game launchers, so I built my own

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Aug 2025 - 12:08pm

Hey!

Long-time lurker, first time poster. I hope this post doesn't break any rules...

I wrote my own cross-platform game launcher (I know, what a unique project /s).

Since I am a Linux user and according to Steam did 90% of my gaming in 2024 under Linux, I have naturally been developing this with Linux as a focus, and not only Windows. It is currently in what I would call a proof-of-concept state. There will some weird and broken behavior, but I hope you can find some value in it while it's being developed.

The video is a showcase of the launcher running what would be a fresh installation.

Some of the main selling points are:

  • Light weight: Low resource usage
  • Quick: Launches practically instantly compared to "competition"
  • Cross-platform: Compiles for Windows, MacOS and Linux. Currently only developing features for Windows and Linux.
  • Working on supporting games across multiple stores.
  • Open Source
  • Attempts to be privacy preserving and secure
  • Community driven: You can get your voice heard and let me know what you want to see more of in the future.

I'm going to keep this brief so that I don't bore anyone to sleep. I'm currently looking for help in developing this project. Anyone who is interested in contributing in any way, shape, or form is welcome to DM me.

What I specifically need the most help with is web development (I am not a web developer). The launcher is written with a Rust backend but a (partially vibe-coded) React UI using Tauri. But anyone who would like to help with docs, Rust, UI/UX, infrastructure, security, you name it... is of course welcome.

If you don't want to or know how to contribute you can simply use it if you want to and let me know what you think :)

Playing Android Multiplayer Games on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Aug 2025 - 9:04am

I was able to play Free Fire on Linux using Waydroid. The only problem was that the mouse cursor was leaking outside the game window on GNOME. To work around this, I hid the top panel using the Just Perfection extension and also turned off the hot corners. The game ran fine on Pop!_OS 24.04. There were no anti-cheat problems on Android, so I hope games like Call of Duty Mobile, Rainbow Six Mobile (coming soon), and PUBG can also be played in the future.

To play, you need an APK built for the x86 architecture; otherwise, the game will crash. I got the Free Fire x86 APK from APKMirror. x86 APKs are also used by the Google Play Games app for Windows.

Free Fire on the Google Play Games app for Windows has a built-in keymap for keyboard and mouse. Games that have been added to the Google Play Games app for Windows can also be played on Linux.

Mouse movement is horseshit on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Aug 2025 - 6:10am

The mouse movement in Linux feels like absolute horseshit diarrhea, even with acceleration profile set to "Flat" and sensitivity (or acceleration as Linux likes to call it?) set to minimum.
I have a Logitech Pro X Superlight 2 and I use it at 44000 DPI (yes... I know..), but it's totally usable in Windows with the sensitivity set to minimum. the minimum sensitivity in Linux is actually lower/slower than the minimum sensitivity in Windows, but in Linux it just feels super inaccurate, twitchy, I really don't know how to describe it.

First problem, dropdown boxes:

I click on a dropdown box and it closes immediately, does not remain open/dropped, I have confirmed that the mouse pointer visually does not move even by a single pixel between pressing the mouse button and releasing the mouse button.
Later I found out that dropdown boxes do remain open/dropped if I hold my mouse in the air before clicking on the dropdown box. This leads me to believe that despite the cursor not moving visually, it is in fact moving by less than a single pixel, which makes something assume that I've moved my mouse after clicking on the dropdown box, therefore closing it.
Some rare applications are immune to this stupid bug.

Second problem, movement:

It just feels like absolute horseshit diarrhea, there's no other way to describe it. I can move the cursor much more accurately in Windows despite having an overall higher/faster sensitivity than in Linux.
Sometimes I can't even double-click without moving the cursor in Linux.

Third problem, no way to change DPI on Superlight 2 (not really a Linux problem):

I have tried Solaar and piper, and neither of them can change DPI on the Superlight 2. But at least Solaar is able to show the battery level. If I ever boot into Linux with the wrong DPI settings, I have to boot back into Windows just to change it in "Onboard Memory Manager".

The dropdown boxes and mouse movement are driving me insane. How can I fix these stupid issues?
If it matters, I am currently on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS but I will be moving to Kubuntu 24.04.2 LTS in the next days due to Gnome being fucking horrendous.

Gamepad disconnects from game after a little while

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Aug 2025 - 5:10am

After a little while (on the order of 10-20 minutes) my controller (8bitdo m30 or xbox controller, same issue with both, wired or bluetooth) will disconnect from my game. The controller will still be registered as connected - the lights stay on, no disconnect noise, other programs are able to receive controller inputs - but my game will completely ignore the controller. This is not an issue native to one game, this has happened to me with TUNIC, Pizza Tower, and ZeroRanger (the only games I have tested this with, doubtless there are more).

I've looked this issue up and not been able to find anyone else having it. In reality I probably am just not searching for it correctly, but the result is the same - I'm left not knowing what to do.

When launching steam through the terminal, I noticed something that was logged at exactly the time that my controller disconnected - two extra lines for "Adding process [number] for gameID [game I'm playing]". The process IDs appeared to be just sequential - there were earlier instances of process IDs which were lower, and these were always sequential. When steam dropped input, an online gamepad tester did not drop input - even though it had been started before steam.

I am using Fedora 41 KDE. I recently switched from the flatpak version of steam to the rpm version, but that made no difference. Any ideas what could be the cause of or solution to this issue?

How to make my Linux gaming PC work "like a console"?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Aug 2025 - 4:24am

Basically, I'm running Nobara with some nice hardware and GPU and it works really well but it's still a PC and I spend all day working at a PC, so when I game I just want to sit on my couch or lay in my bed, pick up the controller and hit the power button and have it launch into Steam or something like that.

Is there a package or software I can install to mimic this behavior, so I don't have to get into my desktop first with the mouse/keyboard to launch my game? I just wanna plop my lazy ass down and fire up some games like it was a PS5.

Is there a way to get into mapping for extreme tux racer with blender or trenchbroom?

I'm wanting to get into tinkering with 3d software and games as a hobby and I thought tux racers maps were pretty simple to get started.

Minecraftpe launcher typing issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Aug 2025 - 3:10am

I use the Minecraft bedrock launcher (that uses mcpe) to play on my PC (ubuntu 24.04) and it works well (they even fixed the controller drift issue mojang has ignored for 7y now) but there is one pretty big problem.

Something weird happens while I'm typing that makes special characters (§) not get recognized, makes the backspace erase 2 characters instead of one and creates invisible spaces that cause syntax errors whenever I use commands making it unusable. I made sure my keyboard was set to US-en, did restarts and all, but it's a persistent issue that happens every time. Is there anyway to get this fixed?? Please, it's been months and I haven't manged to get anything fully functional on this money pit of a pc
