Best Linux Gaming Laptop with New AMD iGPUs (890M / Ryzen AI 300)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 17:09

Looking for a laptop primarily for Linux gaming, targeting models with the powerful new AMD Radeon 890M or the Ryzen AI 300 iGPUs (like the "AI 9 HX 370") for their great open-source driver potential.

My Needs:

  • Use Case: Linux Gaming
  • Target GPU: Radeon 890M or new Ryzen AI 300 series ).
  • Must-Have: Good Linux compatibility (Wi-Fi, sleep, etc.).
  • Form Factor: Traditional laptop, 14"-16". (Not a tablet like the Flow Z13).
  • Budget: ~$1500 USD

Questions:

  1. Any success running Linux (especially gaming) on laptops with these iGPUs? Which models?
  2. Heard reliable reports (good or bad) about specific models?
  3. Any recommendations based on my needs and budget?
  4. Known Linux compatibility issues to watch out for with these new platforms?

Appreciate any leads or experiences! Thanks!

Best AMD X870 MB for Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 16:01

Hi all, I'm building a new PC after 15 years. Always been an AMD user but this will be my first full time Linux build. I've used Linux periodically and built my son's computer with Ubuntu a few years back and he has done very well with it. He does mostly gaming but also programming and has been able to overcome all of his technical issues while early on I had to help him resist the urge to switch to Windows.

I'm mostly looking at Gigabyte, MSI and maybe ASUS. Traditionally ASUS was more expensive, I'm not sure if that is true these days. My current Gigabyte has been going strong for over 15 years so hats off to them..

I suppose my main concern is switching to Linux is driver support - do any of them have better or worse support for Linux drivers? Anything that I might just not know that I should be thinking about?

Need help to Install CachyOS.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 14:33

I can't get mouse move and lagging so much, I previously ever use Arch with KDE no issue about lag and switch back to Windows for a month. And I want to install CachyOS but it's so laggy that I can't install yet. What should I do?

Zink with Nvidia Proprietary drivers?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 13:22

Hi, I was just going through my screenshots when I noticed this one. This was taken about 10 months ago. I don't remember what distro I was using but I'm guessing it was something arch based. How is it possible to use Zink and Proprietary Nvidia drivers and is it still possible to do the same now?

https://preview.redd.it/3oztj0fyz5xe1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=b7c46797861c1897eab56e3408e95e56ab112a0e

I've tried using zink using Prism Launcher on Fedora 42 but it segfaults every time.

"fossilize_replay" using 100% of 2 cores constantly.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 13:21

From what i understand this is steam pre-caching shaders? Is this necessary/can i turn it off without negative side effects? Or is there maybe a way to fix it so it doesnt take forever?

For what it's worth im on Nvidia using the newest drivers via RPMfusion. Fedora KDE.

After 2 years I released my first game that works natively on Linux!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 12:33

Not so long ago, I was a comp sci student using primarily a Linux machine, so I know how hard it is to find a game working well on Linux... That's why I decided to make my game work natively on Linux! (even though Linux only accounts for 1% of my sales, hah). Thought you guys might enjoy it!

Proton settings for best boost

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 12:06

I'm trying to setup some proton variables for me and my friends. 1 has a NVIDIA, I have a AMD and my other friend has a intel (I don't know why, but it IS the new one). What are the best variables for all 3 brands of GPU And can use for max performance? (e.g. FSR, vkbasalt, gamemode, fsynce/esync, etc).

Wow Sunshine and Moonlight are fantastic!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 11:35

I've been streaming games from my gaming PC (host) to my HTPC (client )for a while. They both run Bazzite. They both use AMD cards. 9070XT on the host and integrated graphics on the client. I used the built in steam streaming thing, some games worked, quite a few didn't work at all. Euro Truck Sim 2 wouldn't even start, I managed to install that on the client directly and just run it on the integrated graphics. The last of us part 1 would crash steam entirely on the host and the display would never return from a black screen on the client necessitating a hard reset on the client. Anyways this is long winded way of saying the built in steam streaming thing was pretty crap and unreliable. Good effort but end result is lacking.

I set up sunshine on the host and moonlight on the client. Moonlight couldn't find sunshine initially. After I stopped the firewall on the host, moonlight did find the host. I paired them, which seems like it also gets sunshine to add firewall rules? Idk but when I started the firewall again it still worked so im assuming those rules weren't there before. Regardless holy shit it all works! All the games that worked directly on the host work the same on the client. No messing about. Just streaming the steam big picture (which was already added on Sunshine) seems to be the best way. I had to tell sunshine the correct display (easily done in the webui) and tell moonlight to not mute the hosts sound (easily done in moonlight settings) because initially I had no sound on the client. After that happy days! All working.

Anyways felt like sharing. I was close to wasting money on a cheap graphics card for the HTPC and just ending up basically maintaining 2 gaming PCs and ditching streaming entirely, which I don't want to do. Sunshine and moonlight man, all the people raving about it are absolutely on point! Fantastic software! I can now lie on the floor and game instead of having to sit at the PC :D

CS2 and a few other games doing the same download every day

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 10:35

Every day I start up my PC and open Steam, it just starts downloading a 2.5GB update for CS2 and a few other small ones for other games. This happens every day, not just sometimes and the size is always the same. If I pause it, it will start downloading again sooner or later and stopping will just make it happen again the next day I think. In the screenshot is the download that happens every day on boot.

No audio filter/modulation on Fallout: New Vegas TTW

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 10:12

Every other piece of audio works fine in the game, with the exception of power armor or intercom filters. It appears to be linux exclusive issue and has no bearing if mods are being used or not. I find it seldom mentioned anywhere online. Are there any known fixes? I know certain mods like istewie or JIP are supposed to fix this but that has yet to work. Thanks.

For research : SteamOS Anticheat Whitelist ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 09:58

Can anyone on SteamOS but not a Steam Deck test if Delta Force (free) can start?

On Protondb, the anticheat works only on Steam Decks, while on Bazzite or Cachy, it doesn’t pass the launcher, it's supposed to be whitelisted by the developper (but is it the hardware or the OS ?)

That would be the only advantage of SteamOS over any other distro for gaming (if any other devs do that kind of whitelist).

Thx in advance

How's AMD freesync on wayland?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 09:24

I'm running Cosmic alpha (the latest ubuntu-based system 76 distro). But i also have a Gnome session installed... So i have 2 options for Wayland on my distro: the cosmic compositor or Gnome's mutter.

Sometimes in wayland sessions (both Gnome & Cosmic), when i launch games from steam/proton, both my monitors will turn black. Audio still works and i can hear the game is still responsive, but i have to hard reset. This issue then gets stuck and repeats on every game launch until i log into a X11 session, then its resolved somehow. This issue is never present in my X11 session (but in X11 I suffer annoying screen tearing).

Yesterday i was having the issue a lot, so i tried turning off AMD freesync. To my surprise, that looks like it may have solved it... It has only been 1 day though... So i could have just been gettng lucky, as this issue previously would just randomly happen.

Mu question: Does anybody have wayland issues when using AMD freesync? Any issues with AMD freesync in general that i should be aware of?

AMD rx 9070 xt, running a ubuntu 24.04 based distro. Using the standard drivers and proton experimental.

How do I control where Steam places non-steam games? (Linux Mint)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. April 2025 - 08:37

I've got a fresh install of Linux Mint going on with multiple hard drives. The SSD is too small for me to want to load it up with games so I want Steam to install games on the 6TB HDD instead. I've added that under storage in steam's settings and told it to make that the default choice. But when I go to install battle.net it keeps installing to the SSD.

I've tried to just let that go and then copy it to my other hard drive and update the game properties to point at the new location and Steam won't (or can't?) launch it for me from the new location. I tried running that question through duckduckgo and qwen2.5 LLM and best suggestion I was able to pull out was maybe I needed to chown and chmod the copied folder. I guess you can "chown : " to make it owned by anyone and "chmod 777" to be read/write/execute by anyone, but going nuclear like that Steam still wouldn't run it unless I left it alone on the SSD where it keeps putting the files by default from the battle.net installation.

Anyone have wisdom for me to try next?
