I can't understand why my PC is always running out of memory
I have been trying to transition to Linux for the past 6 months and in more intensive games, such as No Man Sky and Marvel Rivals, my pc consistently runs out of memory and crashes after ~1hr even when no other programs are open and I've rebooted. I have a RTX 4060, a 11th gen i7, 1 SSD and 16gb of RAM. I can't understand how inefficient my gaming experiece has been (even with optimizations such as ProtonGE). What can I do to solve this issue?

Counter-Strike 2 Squished resolution and can't click anything
For whatever reason, the aspect ratio is super squished and I can't click anything on the menu whatsoever. -w, -h, -window, -windowed, -fullscreen none of these launch commands work at all.
Using KDE wayland, on Fedora

ea-app lutris guide
I believe there must be a better way, but I'm posting this because I'm currently having the most stable experience with this method.
Install the latest version of Lutris.
Once Lutris is installed, it will start updating and downloading necessary components. Wait for it to finish installing.
EA App Installation
Currently, running the app by connecting to the source doesn't work smoothly. Just open the link below and install the EA App as a regular application.
https://lutris.net/games/ea-app/
After the installation is complete, it will ask you to log in. Proceed with the login process. Once logged in, close the EA App using the menu button in the upper left corner.
Once closed, open the configuration window of the EA App in the Lutris game menu and disable esync in the Runner Options. Change the DPI option in the lower section if needed. Click the save button in the upper right corner and close the window, then restart the EA App.
Disabling esync makes several games (The Sims 4, Dragon Age II, etc.) including the EA App run more stably. It solves the lot loading CTD issue in The Sims 4.
Game Installation and Execution
Game installation and execution are done through the EA App, just like in Windows.
Caution:
Sometimes, when the EA App is launched, only a black screen appears and the app becomes unresponsive. Force-stopping it in Lutris and restarting it will solve the problem.
Sometimes, when a game is launched, a login window appears due to a DRM check failure. Close the window and restart the game.
If the EA App itself fails to update, reinstall the EA App following the above. You can safely delete the newly registered EA App from the Lutris game menu.
You can register games in the Lutris game menu separately, but it's useless because they are actually executed through the EA App.
Gamescope cannot be used.
If you want to clean reinstall the EA App for any reason, first move the contents of "$HOME/Games/ea-app/drive_c/Program Files/EA Games" to another location, delete $HOME/Games/ea-app, and then install it. Once the installation is complete, restore $HOME/Games/ea-app/drive_c/Program Files/EA Games to its original location to save the time it takes to download the games.

Building a new all-AMD PC for game dev, video editing, and VR gaming. Looking for feedback on my build and advice on switching from Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS to a better Linux distro. I've included my current PC quote in the post
I've been using Ubuntu with an NVIDIA GPU as my daily driver for about 6 years. Recently, I got back into VR after giving WiVRn and ALVR a try. Both worked perfectly for my needs, so much so that I upgraded to a Quest 3 and bought some QoL accessories.
Now, I'd like to upgrade my computer, and after so many years, I'm also interested in switching to a better OS. But honestly, I'm kind of lost, since Ubuntu has been my go-to for so long.
Also, I'm switching to everything AMD, since from what I keep reading, VR on Linux works better with AMD, and overall gaming and OS experience is smoother? Still doing my research on that.
Current PCThis is what I'm rocking at the moment:
- OS: Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS
- Firmware 2301
- GNOME 46
- X11
- CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 × 12
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB)
- Mobo: ROG STRIX B360-F GAMING (I know, very old)
- Storage: 1 TB Kingston KC600 2.5" and mSATA SSD
- Ram: 32 GB RAM
I’ve been able to play every game I throw at it. Cyberpunk 2077 works perfectly. Half-Life: Alyx via WiVRn has its quirks, but performance is great. VRChat works, though the framerate is questionable in some worlds.
wlx-overlay-s doesn’t open on my OS, though. Really want to get this working.
New System I’d Like to Buy. Will This Play Well With Linux? Here’s what I want to build:
- GPU: PowerColor Red Devil AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB GDDR6
- Mobo: ASRock AMD X870E Taichi Lite Ryzen Socket AM5 DDR5 DIMMs 8200 256 GB CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Core, 32-Thread
- RAM: CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 AMD EXPO Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer
- Storage: WD_BLACK 2TB SN7100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 7,250 MB/s - WDS200T4X0E
I'm not an expert at building computers, but this is the list I came up with. Again, going all-AMD because I keep hearing their hardware plays better with Linux overall.
Help Choosing a New OS, Or Should I Stay on Ubuntu?I considered Arch and willing to put in the hours/days to learn it, but have zero experience and afraid of upgrades breaking the system. Again, I'm inexperienced with Arch and maybe there's a way to enjoy a stable experience?
Also looking at Bazzite, but is it good for things beyond gaming? I do a lot of development, video editing, and some streaming. The one thing I don't like is it being immutable. I'm not saying that's bad, but I love tinkering and read it's a bit more difficult when the OS is immutable.
My Computer Uses Cases- Development
- Godot (for VR and Standard)
- C++, Rust, OpenGL, and Vulkan DEV environments
- Mainly want to focus on VR games and applications for Linux
- Gaming and VR are my main priorities. If a game doesn’t work on Linux, I skip it until it does. Not a dealbreaker, I’m not going back to Windows.
- Video Editing (I use Kden Live, love it)
- Blender
- Occasional Twitch Streaming using OG OBS.
Any hardware or OS suggestions are more than welcome. Sorry if this was too long, just wanted to include as many details as possible.

Military Multiplayer Shooter Squad is on Sale on Steam
Large map mulitplayer with different roles to play. Servers can be self hosted, some regions have poor server coverage.
Also the game will be updated to UE5 in the near future, so expect it will run like shit then.

Cleaned up some cabinets and found this. A piece of Linux gaming history.
Steam games not running on my Dedicated GPU, even though the driver is installed (i am on desktop)
so, my friend has installed the nvidia driver today, and the process went smoothlty. But after the reboot, steam doens't seem to launch games using my dedicated the gpu (even though it is set as default GPU). I can tell that because of low fps and low GPU usage. Here are some infos and specs (please, tell me if you guys need any more info):

Title: [SOLVED] StarCraft II on Lutris/Wine: Double-Tap Keybinds Stop Working After First Launch
Hello everyone,
I've been troubleshooting a very specific and frustrating issue with StarCraft II running through Lutris and Wine, and after a lot of trial and error, I found a solution that might help others.
The Problem
On my system, when I would launch StarCraft II for the first time after deleting the Variables.txt file, everything worked perfectly. However, after quitting the game and restarting, my keybinds for double-tapping a key (like double-tapping a control group number to jump the camera) would stop working. Deleting the file and restarting would temporarily fix it for one session, which was the key to finding the real problem.
The Cause
The issue is not with the system's keyboard repeat settings, Lutris, or the Wine runner itself. It's a specific, conflicting setting that StarCraft II writes to the Variables.txt file when the game closes. By starting with a clean slate, I found that the game works perfectly, but one or more of the many settings it auto-populates is what causes the conflict on subsequent launches.
The Solution: A Minimal, Read-Only Config File
The most reliable solution is to create a minimal configuration file with only the essential, known-good settings and then make it read-only so the game cannot overwrite it. This forces the game to always load a working configuration.
Step 1: Delete the Old Variables.txt File
First, navigate to your StarCraft II configuration folder and delete the existing Variables.txt file. The path is usually:
~/Games/battlenet/drive_c/users/your_username/Documents/StarCraft II/
Step 2: Create a New, Minimal Variables.txt
Create a new text file named Variables.txt in the same directory. Open it and paste only the following lines. These settings are sufficient to get the game working correctly in a borderless window, which fixed the display issue on my ultrawide monitor and also ensures the keyboard functionality remains intact.
height=1440
width=2560
displaymode=1
windowstate=3
Step 3: Make the File Read-Only
This is the most critical step. Open a terminal and run the following command to remove the write permission from the file. Replace the path with your actual user name.
Bash
chmod a-w ~/Games/battlenet/drive_c/users/your_username/Documents/StarCraft II/Variables.txt
Now, when you launch StarCraft II, it will read this minimal, working configuration but will be unable to write the conflicting settings. Your double-tap keybinds should now work permanently.
I hope this helps anyone else who has been struggling with this problem!

Steam updates the Proton prefix located in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/0 to all Proton versions I have installed, one by one, every launch. Is there a way to stop it?
Hey! Like stated in the title, Steam updates the Proton prefix located in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/0 to all Proton versions I have installed (including versions located in compatibilitytools.d/) everytime I launch Steam, which cause high CPU usage for over a minute and unnecessary wear on the disk.
It even does this in the wrong order, which makes it more ridiculous.
Proton versions I'm using with various games are GE-Proton 9-27, 10-1, 10-4, 10-9, and 10-10. Steam "updates" prefix 0 in this exact order: 9-27 -> 10-9 -> 10-4 -> 10-10 -> 10-1
The workaround I just found is to remove ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/0 and symlink it to /dev/null, so Steam cannot update it anymore. It's not causing any issues as far as I can tell, but it's not really a proper solution.
So... is there any other way to stop Steam from doing it?

Battlefield 4 stopped working after reboot
So I decided to go back and play bf4 with a friend after long time, worked great through lutris. The next day when I tried to join my friend I got error 1 and got stuck in joining server.
Not sure what could have caused the issue as I didn't change anything on system in the meantime. Tried reinstalling ea app, that didn't work. Might be something with ea app getting an update and breaking. Has anyone gotten similar problem with bf4 (or other ea games) in the past few days?
Thanks for any help.

CS2 has render issues after latest update
Hi,
it seems there is an issue with current version of CS2.
Issue: Current version, under in any circumstances doesn’t show player models.
Device: Playing on Legion GO S with Steam OS.
Only switching the game to beta version 1.40.8.8 works, even launching through proton works. But with proton I am unable to connect to official server due to Valve anticheat.
Tried workarounds:
Verify file integrity
Factory reset the device
Reinstall the game
Try to recalculate shaders (+ Deleted folder with current shaders)
Any idea what might be the cause? Please..

Constant unexplained stutters
I’m relatively new to Linux. Only been using it for a few months. Pop!_OS 24.04 and when playing MW3 (2011) I have random stutters where my mouse freezes and then flings in a random direction. I’ve got no idea how to fix this, I’ve tried installing updated razer drivers, NVIDIA drivers, and gamemode. Nothing has worked yet.

CS2 low GPU utilization because of Steam's new FPS monitor
I have come across a weird issue that I'd like to share.
CS2 is one of my main games, and for some time now I was getting terrible performance. Using nvtop I saw that my GPU was consistently at 50% usage and wouldn't go any higher.
No matter how high or how low I set the resolution, the shadows, the anti aliasing or whatever, the fps would always be the same and the GPU would always stay at 50% utilization. To me this was an indication of something very strange going on, because changing these settings should definitely impact the frame rate.
This was driving me insane. I knew for sure that it couldn't be my PC, because it is fairly high end and there aren't any obvious bottlenecks: Ryzen 7 5700X3D, RTX 4070 and 32 GB of 3200Hz RAM, CS2 installed on an nvme drive. But I also didn't know what was causing it. I tried every fix from OS scheduling policies to resizable bar to custom kernels and nothing fixed it.
It wasn't until I decided to try using steam's older FPS counter that suddenly my GPU returned to 100% usage. The difference was instantly noticeable. Here are some benchmarks:
On Dust 2:
Older FPS counter = 350-390 fps
Newer FPS counter = 185 - 200 fps
On Mirage:
Older FPS counter = 350-390 fps
Newer FPS counter = 200 - 220 fps
On Ancient:
Older FPS counter = 250-270 fps
Newer FPS counter = 130-150 fps
On Train:
Older FPS counter = 210-240 fps
Newer FPS counter = 115-140 fps
Even writing this I was shocked by how much this new counter impacted performance. If anyone is using it, try turning it off and see if you get a boost in fps

NVIDIA GPU's performance on Linux compared to Windows, and good linux distros for gaming
So I'm thinking about switching to Linux on my gaming pc and wanted to know if there is any difference in performance for NVIDIA GPU's on Linux compared to Windows? Since I imagine drivers are optimized for Windows OS first. Also wanted to get some opinions on what are some good distros would be good for a beginner Linux user? I've played around with Ubuntu for some cybersecurity stuff but nothing crazy.

ubisoft connect scaling on steam install
Hi, i recently bought and installed an ubisoft game on steam (trials fusion), which requires to login on a ubisoft account before starting. My issue is that i have an high dpi screen ( a small 14" with 2880x1800 px), so i need to use 2x scaling on all applications to be able to see anything.Steam ad the game itself are not a problem, but ubisofr connect do not scale properly, and after the installation being done through steam, and being open through steam, i have no idea where the application is, nor how to pass environment variable to it. Suggestions?
other info: I'm on fedora 42 xfce
