Execute 16-bit old games under Bottles

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2024 - 04:55

I am importing PlayOnLinux prefixes to Bottles but there is a obstacle. Those 16-bit old games cannot be executed (for example History of the World, 1997). They are fine under PlayOnLinux. Any advices?

Baldur's Gate 3 Freezing and Crashing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2024 - 01:01

Hi all,

I'm new to gaming on Linux. I'm having an issue trying to play Baldur's Gate 3 where it keeps freezing and crashing. Today it seems like I can't run it for more than a few minutes. The screen freezes, but the cursor still works, as does the audio. Usually my computer just stays on the frozen screen, but sometimes I get a DirectX11 error.

I have a Lenovo Legion Pro 5i with Intel Core i7 13th Gen Processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPU, driver version 550.67. I'm running Pop_OS 22.04 LTS.

I tried using gamemode and skipping the launcher.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Also, like I said I'm new, so any debugging tips would be great as well.

How to debug and improve DXVK and VKD3D

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2024 - 00:43

The Steam Deck got me to appreciate Linux and ended up installing Arch on my main computer. While I’ve encountered some desktop support issues, likely due to my ARC 770 GPU, I am eager to improve these issues in the DXVK and VKD3D translation layers, and maybe the ANV drivers. I'm looking for tools that can help capture traces and provide profiling insights. I'd appreciate any resources or tips on how to effectively analyze traces and logs (from PROTON_LOG=1) from captured game sessions. If anyone has experience with these or related tools, your advice would be helpful.

A few hardware vendor profilers I have heard of are:

  • Intel's GPA - Not sure if it can capture traces on Linux.
  • AMD's GPU Profiler

Some other trace capture software, not sure which one to use.

  • VKtracer
  • Tracey
  • gfxrecontruct

Potential security risks with dual booting?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2024 - 00:00

This is a topic I've seen many people comment on, mostly without proof.

With all the kernel-level anticheats coming along, the few games I played are gone from Linux. I had already given up multiple unsupported games when I made the switch about 5 years back. But now, none of the games I like are playable anymore. So, I'm considering dual booting.

One thing I'm not clear on is: Is there any security/privacy risk to dual booting Windows and an encrypted Linux install? Can a Windows kernel-level program potentially access the decryption keys for the Linux partition? I will be using Windows as a bootloader into games only, it won't contain any sensitive data by itself.

I wasn't really sure about the best place to post this question. Hopefully it's not too out of topic.

Installing/Running CnCNet on Steam version of Red Alert 2

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. April 2024 - 23:30

I've done some googling on this, but haven't gotten any solid answers yet.

The Command and Conquer collection was recently re-released on Steam without the stupid Origin launcher. However, these games run a lot better after being patched with CnCNet. I know based on a github issue that this might not work until CnCNet is fixed for the Steam Version. Still, I haven't found a good guide to "patching" games and/or adding accessory launchers within Proton. Is there a way for me to tell Steam that I want to run the CnCNet installer within the "bottle" (if that is the correct term) that Steam has made for Red Alert 2? Also, once I've done that, is it possible to add one of the .exes from that bottle to Steam as a separate game?

For those unfamiliar, CnCNet is a community launcher that patches the underlying game files. Typical installation involves installing the RA2 game files, then installing CnCNet and pointing at the RA2 install. This then provides a "CnCNet Yuri's Revenge" or "CnCNet Red Alert 2" launcher which can be used for online play despite the Westwood servers having been abandoned for many years.

Running into bnet issues again

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. April 2024 - 22:34

Hello there,

Battle.net seems to be struggling again on my side, it's been running well for a while with the last issue I ran into being this WINE_SIMULATE_WRITECOPY env variable that needed to be set to 1 back in december.

Now I'm getting the following when trying to run the Battle.net client.

From what I understand it looks like it corrupted itself trying to update, any attempt to install doesn't work and brings me an infamous error BLZBNTBTS0000005C.

I'm running it using Bottles with the `wine-ge-proton8-25` runner.

Even creating a new Bottle seem to lead to the same error.

Iirc there was a way that I could just prevent the update process by making the files immutable, but I guess with the update already applied the old files are probably gone now, I currently have `Battle.net.14542` and `Battle.net.14766` in Battle.net folder.

Any clue on what I could do to fix it?

Desolatium released (Linux native)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. April 2024 - 22:02

Desolatium is a new point'n'click adventure, with native binaries on the Steam store. The demo looks to be Windows-only however, but not a problem with Proton!

The blurb reads:

"DESOLATIUM is a first-person point & click Graphic Adventure based on Lovecraft Mythos. Live this horror story where you will have to visit mysterious locations, face lovecraftian creatures, find clues and combine objects to solve puzzles."

Wine controller config

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. April 2024 - 21:13

Hello, I have gotten my gc controller working in wine for a few games (namely Geometry Dash), and I was wondering if I could rebind it somehow. It doesn't seem possible to do it per game, and I was wondering if it is supported in wine

Proton failure

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. April 2024 - 21:11

I've been trying to play a variety of games that I used to be able to play. Many of them when I try to run then give me the error "An error occurred while launching this game: compatibility tool failed" I've tried Uninstalling and reinstalling everything: games, proton, runtime stuff. Unfortunately the games still do not work and I'm unsure how to fix this. I run void linux and I am fully updated.

Just realized Horizon Forbidden West has full haptics support for the Dualsense in Proton!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. April 2024 - 20:05

I was playing Horizon Forbidden West yesterday and decided on a whim to plug in my Dualsense controller via USB. I was completely shocked when I realized that I was getting HD haptics AND the neat little sound effects coming out of the small Dualsense speaker that you get when drawing your bow or activating your focus. Adaptive triggers work too. This game actually supports all the Dualsense features while running in Proton!

When did this happen? I wasn't even aware that Proton had reached this point yet. I tried other games that supposedly support the Dualsense haptics, like Death Stranding and Spiderman Miles Morales, but I am not getting haptics in those. I've made sure to disable Steam Input. Is Horizon Forbidden West an exception? Did Nixxes specifically target Linux support somehow or am I just configuring other games wrong?

Alan Wake 2 issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. April 2024 - 18:33

Hello everyone, recently the game became unplayable. I am using bazzite on the legion go. The game runs and loads the main menu just fine, but only loads to an empty area. Even if I start a new save file. The game works fine on windows, but I prefer to game on bazzite. I use heroic game launcher. I have also run it without it an nothing works. I made a fresh install of the game and the entire OS, and the same issue persists. Does anyone else have this issue? I tried googling and went though several forums and I have not seen this pop up.
